Angry Birds 2 – The Official Sequel to Angry Birds – Out Now Worldwide!

The Angry Birds are back in their first sequel! Bigger, Badder, Birdier! After being “Under Pigstruction” for a few months in select countries, Angry Birds 2 (Official Name) The Sequel has been launched worldwide on iOS and Android via Google Play.

“WHAT?” I hear you say, “haven’t there been loads of sequels already?” The short answer is NOPE! And certainly not like this one…

The game mixes elements for previous spin-offs with some very interesting novelties such as Spells and Multi Stage Levels.

Official Gameplay Trailer

Things We Know Now

  • Each Bird has a unique ability.
  • Birds can level up! Higher level birds cause more damage. See the forum topic here.
  • The power-ups have been replaced with spells
  • The Arena is unlocked after level 25. We put together a first look below and there is a great forum topic.
  • You receive a certain number of hearts that replenish over time. If you beat a level or restart before flinging a bird you DO NOT lose a heart.
  • Your bird line-up is determined randomly and the birds appear on “Cards”. You receive a certain number of cards to start each level, and more can be obtained by earning a certain number of points. If you exhaust all your cards you basically run out of birds. Occasionally, you’re able to watch a video ad to earn another card.
  • Most levels change when restarting. They’re usually similar, but the configuration can significantly impact your ability to 3 star or simply beat a level. There’s a forum topic about this here.

Arena First Look

First Look Under Pigstruction

Chose Your Bird

It’s the ultimate slingshot strategy – you get to choose which bird to fling next! “But that makes it easier” “WRONG!” You’ll need to master new spells and strategies if you’re going to stop those eggs getting scrambled. And with the new Destruct-O-Meter, the more blocks you destroy, the more extra throws you get!

Multi Stage Levels

You’ve never seen Piggy Island like this – jaw-droppingly stunning levels brimming with exotic plants, quirky details and plenty of peril. And because those naughty porkies are building their pigstructions right under your beak, many levels have multiple stages. Uh oh.

Spectacular Spells

Use blizzards, chilis, magic ducks and other outrageous spells to inflate the pigs for easier popping or to freeze their forts. And when you need some serious help, guess who’s at hand to make a pork-smashing cameo? That’s right, it’s the sardine loving Mighty Eagle. Oh yeah!

Challenge Other Players

Challenge players from across the world in the new leaderboards to see who’s the most hardcore bird flinger of them all.. Play new tournaments every day and earn more feathers to level up your birds to face the toughest competition on the planet. Seriously, it’s gonna be mega tough.

Defeat Boss Piggies

There’s some serious bad guys on Piggy Island, and your slingshot skills are needed to take them down. Foreman Pig, Chef Pig and – of course – the infamous King Pig make this the toughest challenge the birds have seen so far. Have you got what it takes to get the precious eggs back from these baddies?

It’s also important to note that Angry Birds 2 is optimized for iPhone 5, iPad 3, iPad mini and iPod Touch 5G or newer. You can try it on older devices, but we can’t guarantee a smooth bird flinging experience!

So a few things here. In the spirit of competition on our boards, is this even a game that we can put together leaderboards on? More to the point, can one obtain an unfair advantage through paying (for instance, ABSW2, Stella, etc.)?

Also, I hate this thing about “I don’t have enough lives to keep playing”. I was happy as a pig in slop paying a few bucks for the full version of other AB games where I had unlimited fast attempts. WHY ON EARTH IS THIS A THING NOW? Why can’t I just buy the “full” version of a game upfront and not have to wait up to 30 minutes to replenish my lives?

Why has God (Rovio) forsaken us? Again, I’d HAPPILY pay for the app. I’m sure it’d be more than $0.99 like the old days, but surely it couldn’t be more than $5 to keep their bottom line intact.

I’ll be downloading this later – but even before playing it, I’m already miffed.

The only AB game I continue to compete on the boards on is AB Seasons. No power-ups allowed on the boards, etc. One of the only “fair” AB games there is left.

I have to say I haven’t been around in a long time, but I decided to give this a shot again. I am not a huge fan of the lives feature since this won’t let me binge play on an airplane ride or something. Great for a break here or there during the work day.

Also not sure what this will do to the leaderboards since the levels do change, also will be less likely to go for top scores this time around since I only have limited lives and a lot of our past high scores were built of dozens / hundreds of flings with minimal angle changes.

I, too, like to play Angry Birds while on an airplane. I fly from Los Angeles to Europe once a month, and look forward to a few guilt-free hours of flinging fowl once I settle in my seat.

But, now, I am limited by these artificial “lives” where I have to wait to continue playing. I hate that. My life is busy enough with minor details like EARNING A LIVING, and I can’t drop everything and play a round or two of Angry Birds all day. The enforced waits just tick me off.

Add me to the list of unhappy players. I am not a master player at all, just one that enjoys the game and has spent many many hours in my pursuit of three stars. I bet there are more players like me who just have fun. Now I have to deal with cards, gems, waiting for lives, and watching videos to get a chance to continue playing.

No more replaying a 2 star level 50 times to get the elusive third star and/or mighty feather. It’s another freemium game and I don’t like it. As DaBoid said, I would gladly pay for a version without all the junk where I could play when I want and as long as I wantI I would gladly pay for it. I know Rovio needs to make money and I have played over the years without spending anything but my time. I appreciate all the free update and hours of enjoyment and yes some frustration (but the nest helps me out with that)

I believe AB2 is going to drive away many less than hard core gamers like me and get many bad reviews. I will gladly pay $10 or even a bit more to go back to what works. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Go back to what made your company and AB games so successful.

@woo224 @bad-piggies-2 I gotta back up @mighty-red-1 on this actually. AB Stella Slingshot used to be in the Rovio icon too. Well they removed that and guess what? It got discontinued. “Since we have such a massive audience, there’s always going to be people who don’t think it’s the game for them. But we’re going to keep supporting all the Angry Birds classics for years to come, so if you prefer our other games you can keep playing them instead.”

And let me guess.
More ads that you can’t skip by spending about the same price as the original Angry Birds’ cost for an in-app purchase, just like AB Stella and a later version of Star Wars II.
I’m fine with using money to get currency in big numbers and such, but if there’s video advertisements that you are forced to watch (and after either watching or skipping it, click a tiny X on the screen while clicking anywhere else on accident instantly closes the app) then it’s an instant turn-off.

Cause I’m more interested in smashing pigs than being constantly interrupted to be convinced to play some stupid freenium game that’s even more desperate for money.

By Doug MacColl

Really not impressed with AB2!!! Having to wait for new “lives” is a terrible feature, and the fact that throughout gameplay you feel like Rovio is forcing you to buy gems or spells or something so they can get your money is ridiculous!!! They have ruined AB Transformers, they can’t stop cheaters in AB Friends, they rarely ever update Seasons, Original or Rio…I knew the day would come where I grew bored with these games, now Rovio is just speeding up this process! SMH!

Rank: Debriefed with 1320 points

I knew they’d be doing that stupid limited lives crud, all thanks to the massive success of Candy Crush Saga and the other “2” games (Where’s my Water 2 and Cut the Rope 2) all employing the same exact strategy.

I was skeptical about this game based on Birdleaders video some time back. I was not happy with what was shown during that vid back on 16 july. Most of what was shown is still true in the final release. The things that bother me the most are:

1) Only getting 5 lives to start. This basically forces one to complete a level or only play for about 2 minutes. With all the objections to this method in AB Space on FB (which dropped it) I was hoping it wouldn’t make it to the final version.

2) High Score, or lack of notification of it. There were was a lot of complaints when Stella came out that I hoped they would fix it in this game. No such luck. During the level, you have no clue how close you are to your high score. (And old people like me have a hard time remembering it). Because of this, one will have to manually keep track of their high scores.

3)Level Completion Issue 1: When a level completes, you are show your score for that completion. It does not show your high score along with it as in other AB games.

4)Level Completion Issue 2: When you do complete a level and do beat your previous high score, there is no indication of this. On other AB games, if you get a new high score, you are informed of this.

5)Level Completion Issue 3: When you complete a level, you have no option to replay that level. Your only option is to Continue to the next level. To replay a level, you click continue, wait forever for the next level to open, click cancel (thankfully this does not waste a life), go back to the main level screen and re-select the level you just finished. This takes quite a long time. You can re-play a level by clicking the pause and quit, but that wastes a life.

6)And this may not be Rovio’s fault. On my 3+ yr old phone, I can only play a level or 2 before the game crashes. This appears to be a very graphic intensive game. Much more than the others. Since my phone is quite old, I am guessing that the constant crashing is my phone choking trying to play the game.

And this is just a personal preference, but I do not like the graphics. They are very similar to Stella and Rio 2. I really like the simplistic graphics of AB original and similar games. If I want graphic intensive games, I play on a PC and with a 24″ monitor and not a 4″ phone screen.

For me it is positive that the game clearly different from original AB and I do like the new visuals&mimics.

However IMNSHO the lives system as it is, is a complete disaster! Rovio should at least consider the change proposed by @dmsral below. Since it is unlikely that Rovio would remove the lives system, Rovio should also consider making it possible to earn additional lives by playing and of course remove the ridiculous limit of 5 lives.

And what is it with this hide&seek with the highscore?! At the very least Rovio should offer an option in settings to show it like their older games.

I hadn’t played Under Pigstruction and my Angry Birds obsession has dropped over the past year. But I’m still around and decided to give this game a try.

Here’s my take.

I LIKE it. I like a lot of things about it. I like the general gameplay, the “cards” deal, even the spells are creative. But there’s a lot I dislike.

(1) Like most, I hate limited lives. I know most freemium apps do this, but what about a buyout option? $2 for permanent unlimited lives? I’d pay that.

(2) I dislike the randomness of most levels. When I restart a level, I should be restarting the same level. I don’t mind if the “dealt cards” change — I’m ok thinking of it as shuffling a deck — but keep the level the same.

(3) Restarting a completed level is nearly impossible. Ok I’m exaggerating but it’s irritatingly difficult and time consuming. Add the circular arrow that exists in literally every other AB game.

(4) No “High Score” display? This has also been an AB staple for nearly 6 years. Let’s stop trying to reinvent the wheel by making it square. Squares don’t roll.

Rank: Pig Leader with 12210 points
By Bad piggies (@bad-piggies-2)

@amslimfordy Totally agree, the design is nice, the gameplay is fun, the music is good but the lives system and the randomness of the levels doesn’t make it as fun. There are also to many levels in the game and the level don’t feel unique like they did in the previous game where you easily recognized the levels once you saw them again.

Rank: Sling God with 21565 points
By dmsral (@dmsral)

Expanding on @amslimfordy‘s limited lives statement, the ability to permanently extra lives or buy out of it is a great idea. I paid $9.99 for Jenga mode in Transformers, which at the time, was a good deal. I’d pay that for unlimited lives.

As an alternative, leave the life limits for uncompleted levels, but eliminate it for completed levels. We could then chase points on completed levels while we waited for our lives to recharge.

I LOVE the fast forward button and all games should have it, but would be even better if the life clock also moved at fast forward speed too.

I am loving this game so far. Honestly, I can live with the pseudo-random level designs – they have similar layouts, so to me that’s not too big of a problem.

My biggest issue with the game is the lives. In the Epic arena and in Fight the lives mechanic makes sense (without them, players with an insane amount of time would be able to leap to the top of the leaderboards a lot faster). But in this game (and in AB Pop as well), there seems to be no purpose for the lives mechanic. Otherwise, I love this game.
