    Enjoy ABE, but not a PVP fan. Level 41 and with about half set items (many weaker levels). Tried the PVP to see what it was like and lost the first three coin flips and battles. Done.
    I may see how long it takes to win a coin toss just for fun though.

    1. I have to agree with you. I am LvL 41 with 5 Class 10’s in my line up. I lost 3 of 5 coin tosses and twice had 2 characters knocked out before my turn.

    2. ABE Program Manager is out of his mind to think that someone will pay $=20LC for a second turn at 3 out of 5 bad coin tosses.

    3. Why play one on one? What is the gain or reward?

    4. As a LvL 41 with Class 10’s, if you don’t expand the game outside of the caves where I have use for MY HARD WORK and NOT weak friends, you we see that players will go elsewhere.

    The problem for me is mastery – I’m mastery 6-7, and I’m facing mastery 8+ at my level. No way I can ever catch them without paying $$$.

    I’m done with this event.

    Unfortunately, it looks like we will be getting a number of these pvp events.
    Hopefully they will alternate these with the other types of events where we play for mastery. And hopefully they have not used all of their resources on this and are still working on developing the main parts of game.

    @CalvinJJ2009 uh, how do you use skulkers and wizard at the same time?…

    Wow I’m an idiot. I was totally thinking something else… Too early in the morning for me to be posting comments. My bad.

    I appreciate ABE’s attempt to vary its content, but I’m going to agree with people’s assessments. PvP is lopsided and needs to either be corrected or PvP should be removed. I’m not a fan. I’m not interested in PvP. Battling 10+ master players with ones own 7 lvl Birds; virtually no to little chance. Good luck to Players that enjoy this PvP. I’m not one of them.

    You earn medals through winning battles and complete daily objectives for more. The first objective earns 1000 medals, the second one is 1500 and the third one is 3000 medals, which is also the hardest objective in the day, like “Win 3 arena battles without healing once”. When you win a arena battle, you can roll for loot. The prizes are:
    – 50 medals (Main Prize)
    – 25 medals
    – 15 medals
    – 15 Snoutlings

    There are three huge issues with this “event” (which I am sure is a long term feature).

    First, the game is not balanced for birds vs birds. Every aspect of game design up until this point has balanced birds vs pigs, with progression of pig strength to offer variety and challenge when using various combinations of birds. This update pits birds against each other, which they have not been even marginally balanced to do. Some of the rage abilities appear to have been nerfed for the arena, but some of the birds just don’t have enough hp to go toe to toe with other birds.

    Second, the coin flip is the most deterministic factor in the whole affair. Since this is not real time pvp, the coin flip is just plain stupid. There is no reason the active player should not go first 100% of the time. This leads me to believe that either 1)the arena was originally designed to be live pvp but had to be retrofitted by pitting a player against another player’s robo-birds or 2)there will eventually be live pvp. If 1), there should be no coin flip – player should go first. If 2), the coin flip is still a ruinous design choice that takes 99% of the “skill” out of the battle.

    Third, this update destroys any sense of free to play the game had. As with most pvp games, any pay features which offer genuine advantage over other players must be considered very carefully and delicately in order to maintain the perception of “skill” within the game. Since ABE was PVE this was not that big a deal. Thus, offering so many LC upgrades was no real skin off of the free player’s back. The push toward facebook was more tiresome for the non-FB player since one couldn’t enjoy the benefits of free LCs, free FE, and birds to borrow. But at the end of the day, the free, non-FB player could enjoy his ABE experience in his own little corner of the world without worrying too much about what other people may be doing. Now he is thrust into an arena with people who spent LCs, may have used the set item exploit, or may have even used an emulator to farm mastery (and snoutlings) like some of those on this forum to get a *huge* advantage over him.

    I don’t care if that’s how you like to play the game. I just don’t want to be forced to play against you. My concern is that the new, fresh content of the game may continue to revolve around this new PVP “feature” and possibly even future upgrades to the single player experience will be dependent upon performance in this incredibly imbalanced system.

    I am very sad about this update. I typically seek out non-pvp games and enjoyed ABE. However, my objection is not just that this is now a pvp game. My objection is that this pvp system is being poorly cobbled onto a game implementation that simply isn’t designed to support it.

    ugh.

    oh, and just to note my experience….on my android I won 5 battles (two of which going second, by the skin of my teeth) and lost 3 (went second). On my iOS device I lost all three (device is level 17 with all classes mastery 5 or 6, the other player’s birds just KOd me every turn).

    I got a set totem item on both devices on the first day.

    lightningbird
    @leminhtung03

    Over a day, I have a trio that won about 8 battles in a row with level 23 birds. The birds are:
    Paladin Red
    Lightning Bird Chuck
    Capt’n Bomb

    This trio is use to defeat Poseidon Pig. The strategy for the PvP is similar to how to defeat Poseidon Pig. There are two possible ways:

    1. If you starts:
    – Give Bomb’s “Whip Up” to Red for 60% more healing
    – Use Chuck’s “Lightning Fast” to Red for double healing. Try to use Red to target the banner.
    – Use Red and target at the banner.

    When losing health, keep on going, repeat.
    When losing Chuck, try to knock out the opponent’s birds.
    When Chili Pepper is ready, give it to Bomb to knock out birds and banner in the same time

    2. If the opponent starts:
    – Similar to the first situation, if Red has enough health for that, by diving Red’s maximum health by 10. Round up if the decimal place is 5 or more. Or else, use “Lightning Fast” to heal Red and use “Whip Up”.

    If one or two of opponent’s birds revived, use Red’s Devolution at the banner to protect the damage. It’s good when the flag has the ability to use bird for banner protection, like “If Bomb is available, there is 50% chance of dealing no damage to banner” (that’s what I remember, not quite exactly for that).

    Hope you can try it, because two of the daily objectives of 19/11/2014 is win 2 arena battles with Red and win 5 arena battles with Red’s Paladin class. The total medals you can earn in this day is 4000 medals

    @filthycasual
    That pretty much sums it up – I completely agree with each of your 3 points.

    Regarding the third point – for those participating – you do get the choice to not enter combat with an opponent. You can just leave the arena and wait until you get an opponent that you feel you have a chance to defeat. However, losing the coin toss is still the most important factor in determining the outcome.

    I was worried that this new event might affect the main game, but I think they have designed it to be to separate.

    If you look at the instructions by tapping Terences’s head, this is Season 1 and it is Week 1 of 12. So this is likely to go on for 12 weeks, although I think the competitions will be once every 2 weeks (since there are 6 levels). And the awards at the end all relate to this event. There is no mention of LC’s, mastery, snoutlings or stamina drinks. The rewards appear to relate to the banner.

    The other concern is whether this event will affect the development of the main parts of the game. A lot of time would have been spent (and probably still is) devoted to developing this PvP event. I hope that this is not holding back the release of new cave levels or other new levels in the game.

    I am quite happy to ignore this event if I have something else to continue on with.

    I realize Rovio has accepted there was/is going to be resistance in regards to PvP. And, I’m certain they realized there would be bugs. But, I don’t think they could have ever guessed that this Update would fail , horribly, in such a short of time.

    I REALLY hope Rovio is paying attention to everyone’s input into this new format. ABE was one of my favorite Apps. Money could be spent , but it had little impact on other players in regards to someone spending cash in order to advance. Now, thanks to this PvP format, cash is king in ABE Land.

    @henjovr

    As said before: the thing most wrong with thenPvP arena is then coin toss.

    I can consistently knockout 1-3 birds if I go first, depending on opponent gear.
    Well geared opponents can usually knockout 1 of my birds I’d they go first.

    Too luck based for me.. And no easy solutions since Epic wasn’t built for this.

    Angry Johnny
    @angryjohnny

    One thing to have in mind is that the Arena is completely optional, all the rewards you get from it are (mostly) used inside the Arena and does not have any impact on your main game. With that said there seems to be a reward for the Mighty Eagle on the League Wheel that might have some impact on your mastery but I am unsure about that.

    KerrAvon
    @kerravon

    @angryjohnny is correct in saying that this event optional.

    Despite our issues with this event, I still think there are a lot of players participating and maybe even enjoying themselves. I assume Rovio will look into the participation rate at some point and determine whether the event is a pass or fail.

    But it would be good if that “Coming Soon!” sign would either load properly or go away (problem on iOS systems I believe).

    DuncTK421
    @dunctk421

    Tried it again this morning. Managed to win a couple battle but still lost two. My lvl 41 birds are getting wrecked unless I win the coin toss. Even then I’ll have birds knocked out in one hit. Def not enjoying this.

    filthycasual
    @filthycasual

    I have the infinite loading icon on my android as well.

    Also, with my iOS device I have had a much easier time winning battles. I don’t know if this is because of the randomly chosen field I am playing against or because my device is level 17 with 5 or 6 mastery birds.

    I’m sure tons of people will play it. I have no idea how profitable it is, but it will probably generate more whales than the rest of the game did because people like spending money to be competitive.

    My point is that the game wasn’t designed well for pvp which makes it an ill fit. PVP phone games probably generate more money than PvE games, but I’m not that familiar with the industry. I wouldn’t have ever played the game if I thought the point would be PVP, but I recognize that there’s a big market for that. I just feel the implementation is still sorely lacking, and the development path of the game thus far has not been compatible with a PVP focus.

    I hope I can ignore the PVP anyway, but I have my doubts.

    ps how do I get a new opponent? when I back out of the battle and return I still have the same opponent.

    seggy
    @seggy

    Well, I just got leapfrogged because my 3000 point objective is “Win 5 battles with Thunderbird!” Yeahhh great, I don’t even own Thunderbird yet. :-/

    I don’t mind this whole PvP thing, it’s a little diversion while there are no new events or caves and the rest of my play consists of grinding away on auto-play to level up my birds. Especially since it doesn’t affect the main game at all, because I haven’t spent a dime on the game yet, and definitely won’t be spending any of my scarce LC for the arena.

    @filthycasual
    I don’t know how exactly long it takes to reset your opponents, or if shutting down the game and re-opening will do it, but just now I backed out of a highly unfavorable matchup, did some SRC auto-play grinding for 30 or 40 minutes (pretty sure it was under an hour, at least), and had a new opponent waiting for me in the arena.

    I found this Pvp very difficult when you don’t spend gold coin$$$$ on golden chili & and arena upgrades !!!

    But Most annoying is a bug on the advertisment before some battle that can’t be skipped and oblige you to close the game & reload…

    2nd time today I lost a battle in the Arena because of the Netflix advertisment that can’t be skipped or quit ????? WTF !!!

    day 2 results.

    iOS device has not lost a battle. Checked off the three daily quests…played 5 or 6 more before deciding the trophies from the wheel weren’t worth the time.

    Android device won the first two battles (won the coin flip) and lost the second two (lost the coin flip). The field of competition is *so much* easier on my iOS device. The android’s competitors are much higher level, usually wearing matched sets.

    I believe the field may be selected based on your own birds. I thought it might be nerfing my opponents because of my level, but they don’t have matched sets either so I think it’s just who they are.

    Of course, I might’ve just gotten an easy bracket on the ios.

    JeffersonMcM
    @jeffersonmcm

    Things I’ve noticed so far:

    -Leaderboards seem limited to only other players of the same level. I’m at level 41 and so are all the other players on my leaderboard. I expect that the leaderboards will become even more balanced over the next few weeks as high-end players move up to the higher leagues.
    -Random opponents are not limited to only your leaderboard but are also chosen based on level and maybe even mastery ranks. My birds are mostly rank 7 and the opponents I’ve seen range from 6 to 10. Of course it is possible that this is just the ranks you get to when you’ve played long enough to be max level. [Not sure if matched set items factor into this or not. My opponents have been about 50/50 on completed sets or unmatched items]
    -Only 2 days in, but I have been staying at the top of my leaderboard mostly by completing the daily challenges. My challenges have been easy though; win with [bird] or win with [class]. Most difficult was winning 3 times knocking out the opposing banner with rage ability. Trophy points seem slow to accumulate just by winning battles, especially since 3 stars all but requires a clear rank advantage over your opponent and winning the coin toss.
    -I can only assume that the coin toss odds are actually 50/50, but I haven’t been seeing it. I’ve lost the toss about 75-80%. It wouldn’t surprise me if the odds were weighted in that direction to counter-balance the lack of strategy from the computer AI.
    -The computer AI does not even come close to making the best use of birds on the opponents teams. If you like to cherry-pick your opponents by looking at their teams, look for classes like Lightning Bird who are way more useful for their abilities than their attacks because the AI will not use abilities hardly at all.
    -Before you start a battle, if you run up against a team you know you will lose to, close the game completely and re-open it (i.e. on iOS, swipe the program closed from the home screen). When you come back, you will have a new opponent. It may take a minute or so to do this, but you don’t have to put it down and just come back later. You WILL take a loss if you close the game or crash in the middle of a battle.

    burbman
    @burbman

    Day 2 results – Three really easy daily goals
    win 2 with Blue – 1,000
    Win 5 with Chuck – 1,500
    Win 5 with Skulkers – 3,000

    I am noticing that battles are getting more difficult as opponent banners are picking up set items. I have been unlucky on my spins so far, but am still hoping for some luck soon.

    Playing for offensive power, I have won all battles so far regardless of coin flip, but have been touch and go on a couple where I lost the toss. I know many ideas have been tossed around as to how to offset this advantage, and I am standing by with my own proposal to apply the buff ability of all coin toss loser birds.

    Also, since the update, the game crashes an awful lot. Yesterday two of my three losses came as a result of a game crash.

    filthycasual
    @filthycasual

    @burbman

    How will the buffs benefit you if your birds are knocked out on the first turn when losing the flip?

    My experience has been that when I lose the toss the opponent focuses all attacks on my lowest hp bird. Thus, I lose white blue or yellow every time. If the opponent happens to be running AoE, there is a good chance a second bird will be close to death as well.

    I’m not sure how having a buff would offset this….Maybe a samurai shield to keep the one bird alive, making sam an auto-include for every arena battle?

    Won’t this make non buff birds severely weaker in arena?
    How would the single-target buffs choose targets? Randomly?
