We are proud to be the first to announce the next update to Angry Birds Space — called Pig Dipper — is coming soon. The details are very sparse, but there are definitely some things worth reporting, so without further ado.
Note: On December 7th, we received word that the episode name, as appears in Game Center, has been changed. The original name was “Water Galaxy”, a strong contributor to our speculations below. All references below reflect the updated name. This reminds us that we should never omit our favorite disclaimer: “These names are subject to change.”
- Since the original name we reported was, “Water Galaxy”, we’re going to go out on a limb and speculate that there might be traversible water in-game. Maybe we will see something similar to what what we saw in Angry Birds Seasons Piglantis. It had new physics that exploited both buoyancy and density. Again, this is pure speculation as of now.
- As you can see from the image above, it looks like Power Ups are indeed coming to Angry Birds Space. If you aren’t familiar with Power Ups, you might want to check out our classroom lesson or our ABo v2.2.0 release post.
- We do not know if these will be precisely the same Power Ups, but there is little doubt that Sling Scope is superfluous in Angry Birds Space.
- For those of you who may be upset about the introduction of Power Ups, I offer you a potential silver lining. Based on the image, we are willing to speculate that Power Up scores will be distinguished from the non Power Up scores. How? Well, that we don’t know. We could be wrong, but we like to look at things from a glass-half-full perspective.
We are definitely excited! Are you? (disclaimer, don’t just say, “Yes”)
While you are welcome to share your opinions about this update below, we kindly ask that those displeased with Power Ups express their opinions in a suitable forum thread. This is not the place to vent about said issue. That said, Rovio took our previous feedback very seriously, which is one of the reasons we believe we’ll see separate scores. Fingers crossed.
Lastly, another special thanks to @Nobelak555 for his ongoing assistance and sleuthing abilities.
New Image: On 8 January, Rovio released a teaser image on Facebook (caption: “Coming soon. (Quack!)”) and Twitter (caption: “Bathtime! #comingsoon”). Here, we include the image from Twitter as it shows a little bit more. We hope this means that Pig Dipper will launch within a matter of days!
New Pig Dipper Trailer
On January 9th, Rovio released a trailer for Pig Dipper (yes, the name is now confirmed!) The caption says the update will be available “*very* soon” and the video says “Now available”. So perhaps we could see the update land within a matter of hours! The water physics look similar to the Piglantis episode of Seasons; the video says 30 levels will be included; and the Power Ups look completely new!
Zero Gracity Water? I need the update.
It seems like Space is a long way from finishing :),btw interesting world.
Jeez, I’m still struggling thru Red Planet & I’ll be danged if I’m ever going to three star all of Star Wars. Then again, I don’t have as much time as I used to to play for hours on end. Christmas break from work coming up soon, tho!
If Sling Scope in the ABO distance is not too long, ABSp should have Sling Scope and it should be too long! Right?
Maybe the first update on 2013?
I hope not…
wow! underwater in space will be interesting, power-ups in space? YAHOO!!
Wow, this looks very interesting! Can’t wait to see how the water works!
Also, I’m relieved that power-up scores will be distinguished from “vanilla” scores. Solves previous problems that arose in ABO.
This sounds REALLY cool! Can’t wait to start dunking those space birdies!
Ice bird could be really interesting too!
I think ice bird should just bounce off the water when he hits it and create ice where he lands on the surface.
But I think he melt in water,or freeze the water into ice!!!
It looks like they added and separated powerup scores which means . . (I think) . . wait for it. . . our playable levels have just doubled! Woo Hoo!!
If they keep 2 different scores on our devices, i.e. showing both a power up score and a non-power up score, that would be pretty impressive. That might provide incentive to use power ups.
BUT ONLY IF THEY HAVE SOME SORT OF INDICATION!
If they keep the scores separate like we hope, I bet that they
role it out on ABO with the next update.
They’ve got more Bad Piggies 19-xx levels to release, so that would be an ideal time.
I like the way Rovio will be separating the two scores and I think that there will be some sort of indicator or something on the lines of that.
If the scores are separated like I think they will be, then I think RovIo has created another game within a game (like the feathers) which would, I assume, require new leaderboards here on ABN. Every episode would merit 2 leaderboards, the first without powerups, the second with powerups.
Hope the speculation of the PU and the separate scores become a reality. That would provide a whole new level of playing fun and as you mentioned another game within a game. It would also be the first step to erasing some of the negativity about PU. Have not used them much so it will provide an opportunity of leveling the playing field seeing what one can do with and without PU.
Actually, I kind of like that idea. Theoretically speaking, it shouldn’t be all that difficult to implement a separate PU score. If such were to work successfully, the concept could be pushed across the board to all the other apps.
It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.
I agree. I love the games that have the Mighty Eagle, Mighty Space Eagle and the Mighty Falcon. It’s another way of beating the levels once I have 3-starred them. I have an Android so the Mighty Eagle isn’t an option for me in Seasons and Rio (I dont remember if Rio has the M.E. for iphones/ipads).
I love the idea and hope that the power-up option will be available for non-ios devices.
And if separated 2 score, that mean can’t transfer score to platform that don have power up.
Not true @pjng. The game will pick up the information it needs and skip the extra data.
Oh wow this looks awesome a watery planet dat sounds really interesting can’t wait till it comes out AB games get better and better
Hmm…. Water Galaxy seems pretty interesting but a reasonable question I see fit asking is this: will the Pink Bird make an appearance??
I would assume this would depend solely on level design. Bubbles aren’t going to affect much of anything in 0 gravity. And with the levels we’ve seen so far in Space.. there’s very little time or room to use her bubbles on structures.
@trainman2012: She’d have a tractor beam/GFD like ABSW, if they do.
Maybe laser beams coming from the eye would be the better power.
Or maybe your guess a tractor beam/GFD.
I am also wondering what if Matilda (White Bird) and Toucan (Boomerang Bird) will look like when in Space.
Rovio never runs out of ideas!! Not that it’s a bad thing, can’t wait!!
@souperbrick – you are so right. Rovio always amazes me. With all the games and levels, I dont know how they never run out of ideas. Keep ’em coming Rovio. I love your games and cant get enough. I have all the games on my laptop, my cell phone and my old cell phone. I just kept my old cell phone so my daughter can play games on it. She loves Angry Birds, too….she’s only 6. Every time I tell her that there was an update, she gets excited. I always make sure that my Angry Bird games are all up to date.
Maybe the white / pink bird will appear and have their star wars abilities.
Yes,and the green bird, too. The space and star wars.
well, I’d like the White Bird to lay jetpack egg bombs. I saw this idea on an ABN forum and I really liked it!
Fingers crossed for the white or green bird to join the birds in this update!
There already IS a green bird in this game.
@chriss I have never seen green bird (i.e. Boomeerang) in Space. Terrence (i.e. big Brother) is green colored but I think that @souperbrick meant Boomerang Bird from original game.
Oh. Sorry I did not mean Terrence. I meant the boomerang bird or the white bird.
This sounds like it’s gonna be nuts! Even now.. Space is still the only one I have not completely three starred aside from the new AB:SW.
We’ve seen how good they are at mimicking gravity wells in space.. can’t wait to see what they have in store if they plan on using fluidic properties in 0 gravity.
I think the powerups will be used in the same…. what’s that word I’m looking for……. well, like the space eagle. It will have a different scoring method or just a separate score. Maybe there will be special power up levels. Also I know a good power for green bird in this game: you tap somewhere on screen and green bird goes around that spot in a loop.
Ooh, bubble pigs….. UNDERWATER!!!!!!
The space eagle is already basically a power-up, so I’m not too displeased about that.
One thing, water freezes in space, right? So it’s probably safe to say the whole thing won’t be in water. Pigs unfreeze if they are in a gravity field, so maybe it will be the same with water. Maybe you will be able to splash it out and freeze outside stuff like the Ice bird?
I think that @lostgraybird would be excited. As far as I remember he wrote about water activities often, water in space should be awesome.
Space is my favorite game of all AB games, I am ready for new game fun.
I meant @lostgreybird, I misspeled his screen name.
reminds me to neptune
I think this is a great idea! Hope we can do the different leaderboards-thingy with angry birds too.
Rovio, make separate scores in ABO first!
I doubt it would be possible to make difference between scores that are obtained with power ups from their first introduction to now. What was done is done and hardly that remedy exists. But luckily they will separate scores in Space. I guess that topscore obtained with power ups will show lightening sign and will be shown below or up the score obtained without powerups.
@cosmo2503 The scores are stored separately in ABo already. Just not displayed separately.
@amslimfordy sorry for bothering (I know asking same questions over and over is annoying), but where are they stored separately? I wish they would be shown separately on device that when you open level it shows scores with power ups and without power ups. As far as I know there isn’t enough place for new achievements and leaderbroads in GC for ABO so I guess that leaderbroads woldn’t be separated (as it is shown on the article’s photo for Pig Bang Power ups.
Let me start by clarifying. The fact that AB:Space is going to have separate GameCenter Leaderboards for with/sans Power Ups is interesting, but not of big consequence. While it will be nice to know where you stand in the competition among non-PU users, it’s not nearly as important as the data files.
Returning to ABo. ABo is now out of space for Leaderboards, but how those Leaderboards sum their totals can always be changed (for example, they could be changed to only pull non-PU scores, though I don’t know if this will have any adverse affects). But again, what is more important is that with/sans PU scores have been stored separately within the data files since the introduction of PUs in the app.
The following is my point of view and not to be seen as the view of AngryBirdsNest. I have no huge objection to the existence of PUs within the app. It does create some issues in terms of the leaderboards on this site and the “purity” of gameplay that many veterans seek, but it’s not the worst thing in the world. However, my strongest objection to this point has been the lack of distinction between scores obtained with/sans PUs. For more information about how I would approach the situation, see my post in the forum.
Space Eagle is also like a power-up and it has a seperate score, which is a good thing. So I’m happy that the further power-ups will also have a seperate leaderboard, even if I don’t need power-up. They should also do this for ABO. But power-ups will only be fun if they are free or at least unlimited for 0.99 $.
I agree about the price, the same for SE. A 20 dollar IAP on a game that costs a dollar is ridiculous.
If you are dissatisfied with the price, the easiest solution is to not purchase.
I suppose, but I really wouldn’t consider that a solution.
I agree with you 100% AngryBirdsFanGuy438. I actually don’t mind paying a little more for the SE, but $20.00 is totally insane and very greedy on Rovio’s part.
Oh.. look up the price for the Mighty Eagle plush! I can’t remember the last time I paid $120.00 for a stuffed animal.
But as stated.. if ya don’t want it, don’t buy it.
Hmmm, with this it sounds like a Naboo update for SW is also likely.
I am in 2 minds as to separating powerup scores though – yes it will create more levels to play/replay – BUT I already get it in the neck about how much time I spend playing AB – I haveall of Original to re-complete as I lost my scores ages ago, most of Seasons is complete, but below average, I still havesome of Rio to complete and bring the rest above average and I haven’t started red planet yet. Also I haven’t properly started BP or AA yet either.
Slow down Rovio, give us time to breathe.
I agree! I still haven’t 3-starred Bad Piggies ABO, and I’m way behind on Seasons and space! I guess it’s good though…
But why Naboo? It seems like Bispen and Endor would be first. If they make levels off the new movies, I wonder if they’ll change all the birds?
I would assume they would finish Hoth before another planet.
My expectations come true! Water in space – it will be revolution!
Can’t wait for it but please no Power Ups :-(
Hey, if scores are distinguished, I see no more hate for powerups. Hopefully Rovio will do the same to ABo, then maybe add powerups to Seasons too.
Space Eagle is already basically a power-up. I wouldn’t mind them adding more, though it is kind of annoying.
That is not true, SE is not power up. It doesn’t get you any points just help you to clear level or to collect feathers which is cosidered as game in game.
SE is like a power-up. It helps you to pass a level if it is too difficult for you. That’s exactly what power-ups do as well.
Yes i have the same opinion like @cosmo2503. No extra points!! The Eagles have Sense. It’s a further feature for reaching Archievements!!! And some Levels a really hard work to feather Total Destruction. So in my eyes the Mighty Eagle is no Power Up!!!
You don’t get the point, @cc-jolly. We think that since SE does not give extra points, the power ups should not give extra points either. There should be a seperate score for power-up, as it is for SE. That’s why we compare SE to power-ups. We all know that it is different at the moment, but we think it should be analogical.
I hope rovio will make partical scores, that you can see scores without power ups and a score with power ups for each level
@jos yes that would be the perfect solution!!!
@chris i know. I understand you very good but for me personally it is no fun!! Sorry my opinion!
@jj-jolly: For me it’s not fun either. But with separate scores and unlimited and free use of power-ups it might be fun.
I hate powerups, but this is a an acceptable alternative. Two games for the price of one, not counting the price of powerups, which I won’t buy.
Woo! Water in Space, and Powerups in Space! This is one update I can’t wait for!
Hope pink birds powers in angry birds space is a tornado to suck pigs in and make her appearance to the water planet her power would be different maybe her bubbles will lift pigs up to die and she will be in space because she was on angry birds star wars the game
There is no part of the post that mentions Pink Bird coming to Space…
Now we can be optimistic about power-ups! Whoopee! Of course, I think there will be completely new ones.
KIng Sling seems like it would make gameplay difficult IMO.
Birdquake I think would only apply to one planet of the player’s choice, either by tap or by some launchable object.
Sling Scope is obsolete.
Super Seeds actually are a possibility.
I think this update will be tomorrow because:
1. They updated Seasons for bug fixes on a Wednesday so that they wouldn’t have two updates on a Thursday
2. Next Thursday is the 12th (ABo’s 3rd birdday) so they would want to update ABo then.
So the Space update must be tomorrow.
I hope so.
dont think so
