Angry Birds Space Now Available!!

At long last! At very long last! Angry Birds Space has landed for iOS, PC, Mac, NOOK Color, and Android via the Android Market and Amazon Appstore. We will definitely know more as we delve a bit deeper into Angry Birds Space, but here’s what we know so far. The initial launch of Angry Birds Space includes:

  • 60 gravity-defying levels: 30 from Pig Bang and 30 from Cold Cuts. The Angry Birds Space leaderboard is online and ready for your scores. Walkthrough pages are also up, so feel free to provide your strategies and help us track down those minimum 3 star scores.
  • 30 brain-teaser, extremely difficult levels in an episode called Danger Zone. Our video walkthroughs are available, but we warn you that they are very challenging. On iOS, Danger Zone is an in-app purchase, though level one is already unlocked, so you can try one level before you chose to buy the episode for $0.99. On PC, Danger Zone unlocks if you pass all 30 levels Pig Bang. It is available for free on Samsung Android devices. As for other devices, only time will tell.
  • A Golden Eggsteroids episode, which are the Angry Birds Space equivalent to Golden Eggs. This episode is locked by default. It unlocks once you’ve found your first Golden Eggsteroid. When found, Golden Eggsteroids unlock bonus levels, some levels pay homage to a few classic 1980’s video games. This is reportedly Rovio’s not-so-subtle nod to its video game predecessors.
  • For iOS there are new achievements via Game Center. For the first time we’ve actually created some video walkthroughs that can help with some of the hard achievements.
  • Poppable space suits (bubbles) on the home screen and throughout the game (i.e. check out the credits).
  • New animated bird help menus that help you understand the different powers.
  • The Space Eagle is making an appearance (see more below).
  • Quick tip #1! Frozen pigs will pop on their own.
  • Quick tip #2! To unlock the first level in an episode you need to hit the “Play” button and watch the first comic. Afterwards, you’ll be taken to the very first level.
  • Quick tip #3! If you hit an Eggsteroid, like the one on level 1-9, you’re automatically transported via a wormhole to that Eggsteroid level.
  • Quick tip #4! Lazer Bird isn’t affected by gravity when he’s targeting (after tap), but after impacting something gravity will exert force.

As you can tell, Angry Birds Space is launching on many platforms at once. Here’s a quick breakdown on the different flavors and their subsequent cost. Regardless of what version you chose, I’m sure the few dollars that it sets you back will be well worth it. In most cases it’s cheaper than a Happy Meal at McDonald’s.

  • iOS: There are two flavors.  The SD version costs $0.99 USD, which is identical to the other Angry Birds apps in the past. The HD version costs $2.99 USD, which includes retina support for the new iPad (colloquially, the iPad 3). At this time, it is unclear if there will be a free and/or trial version like the other three apps. Angry Birds Space for iOS will run on iPhone 3GS/4/4S, iPod Touch (3rd, 4th gen) and requires iOS 4.0 or later (iPad requires 4.2 or later).
  • Android via Amazon Marketplace: There is a free ad-supported version, a $0.99 ad-free version, and a $2.99 HD version for Kindle Fire (nice!).
  • Android via Android Market / Google Play: Just as above, there is a free ad-supported version, a $0.99 ad-free version called “Premium”, an a $2.99 HD version for tablets. Requires Android OS 1.6, just as before.
  • PC: $5.95, a dollar more than the other Angry Birds apps in the past (the extra dollar may be for Danger Zone being included). There is also a demo available which allows you to play levels 1-1 through 1-15 of Pig Bang.
  • Mac: $4.99 and requires OS X 10.6.6 or later.

Understanding The Mighty Space Eagle

The Mighty Space Eagle has arrived, although it’s not exactly what you’re used to! On iOS at least, we first see the option to use the Space Eagle on level 1-11 of Pig Bang. The Space Eagle pops out of the sardine can through a wormhole and quickly blasts the surrounding area before returning to Earth. There are a few important differences though.

  1. You must have at least one unfired bird in the slingshot to use the sardine can.
  2. Most notably, the Space Eagle isn’t buy once, unlimited use. Rather, it’s treated more like a power-up. On iOS you receive three trials and then are prompted to purchase more. You can buy 20 cans for $0.99, 80 for $2.99, 280 for $7.99, or 980 for $19.99. We should also mention that you can earn Space Eagles via gameplay, though probably not enough to make significant progress in feather collecting.
  3. Using the Space Eagle does NOT automatically pop all pigs and clear the level, like it does in the other versions of Angry Birds. You must keep flinging.
  4. We’ve heard reports that the number of birds you use actually affects your destruction percentage. In the past the birds could help you, but didn’t directly affect your percentage. This is unconfirmed.

Let’s Find those Golden Eggsteroids! Clues Abound

Update! We’ve found all five Eggsteroids and our Complete Angry Birds Space Golden Eggsteroids Guide is ready and waiting if you need it. The Golden Eggsteroids leaderboard is up as well, so head on over and enter your scores.

If you want to track them down the Golden Eggsteroids yourself, we’ve outlined the clues we’re aware of below. If you aren’t interested in sleuthing for clues, our Complete Golden Eggsteroids Guide is available as a shortcut. Okay, on to the clues we know exist so far:

  1. One hint is available by participating in MTV’s “A THIN LINE” campaign, which we wrote about a few days ago.
  2. Several hints will available via Walmart, both by their Facebook page and by physical Angry Birds Space merchandise. Supposedly their Facebook Page will be updated with a clue today. But that’s not all. Per this USA Today article, “three more clues will be hidden in a new line of limited-edition plush toys, T-shirts and candy that the retailer will begin selling on Sunday. The 5- and 8-inch plush birds ($9.97 and $14.97, respectively), $6.97 T-shirt and Space Fruit Snacks ($2.18) could have clues on the price tag, in the packaging or within the shirts.”
  3. Furthermore, T-Mobile stores within Walmart will offer a free level to those who buy an Android smartphone. We’re not sure at this time if this is an exclusive level or some type of unlock.

Lastly, I should also add that all Samsung users have access to a bonus Golden Eggsteroid. Since it’s not available for everyone it’s not included on our leaderboard.

Yeahhh…..good work rovio…very nice gameplay…..i actually tried not too get three stars, but tried to circulate the bricks around the planetary bodies..so much fun..

although the space eagle is very costly…well, you can get too many good things in the world…
I’ll probably ended up buying the space eagle too..lol

On second thought (A recommendation, not in gameplay),

I really appreciate if when a tin of space eagle is used, it is for one feather, not one try…
And once a level is feathered, the use of space eagle for that level is not counted…
It can be more satisfying for both fan and rovio….
Juz my 10cent…

I emphatically agree… It appeared after starring level 1-10, as it wasn’t meant to appear until level 1-11, I clicked on it like a dummy, wasting a sardine can. Went back to level 1 and tried again (all I want is the feather achievement) and wasted the other two… And *no* feather!!!

I hope I can earn more, I’d hate to oat for the ME when I only use it for achievements,

So far lazer bird is very good. I like its new technique.
I wonder about the red bird tho. When I press anywhere after I fire it, the red bird produces “red sonic” around it. It doesn’t seem like the sonic has any effect tho…

Rank: Champion with 3070 points
By bigbrotherbird97 (@bigbrotherbird97)

The red sonic you are refering too is the sound of the bird i guess. Just like in the other games, when you touch the screen when the red bird is flying, it makes a noise too

Rank: Champion with 3070 points
By bigbrotherbird97 (@bigbrotherbird97)

I know why the green bird is not in this game. You can shoot lazer bird anywhere, and when you tap the screen, it will go in the direction on where you tapped. So if you shot the bird too far, you can tap it back to the sturcture and and it will go back!

Rank: DaBomb with 260 points
By bluegie (@bluegie)

Yeah, the lazer bird is like superman :P. There are places that I need to shoot the bird randomly, let it fly around, then tap the target at the right moment. It guess it has both yellow bird and boomerang, and even better.

I hope they’ll still include all the birds in the future, probly giving boomerang another unique ability.

Thats curious to me too. I tried it’s ‘boom’ around Pigs but it had no effect

I want to buy it for PC. Is it new that you can pay only with credit card? I bought the other games in December (the 99 cent offer) and I could swear that I paid with Paypal! The problem is that I haven’t a credit card :(

Rank: Master Slinger with 6700 points

If you have your paypal debit card, that will work. I used my debit card to pay for the games when I first got them. If you just don’t like credit cards-can’t blame you there:)- you could buy one of those prepaid cards at Walgreens and use that, I think. It should work, since it would have the credit card logo etc.. Hope that will help you and happy flinging!!

Actually, I haven’t seen the second one. I’ve played up to 1-11 on Android so far + Danger Zone 1 on iOS. That’ll be interesting since I’ve playing Mario up to Super Mario World in the past. For the moment, I have Super Mario Bros. X in my laptop, but I haven’t played it for a while.

That’ll be an interesting Egg-steroid level when I encounter it.

I’ve downloaded on both my iPod Touch (3rd Generation) and my father’s Lenovo A160 (an Android phone). Rovio has been really generous this month, especially this week alone.

Does anybody know if there is ANY difference between the paid version from Amazon & the free version from Google Play? (For Android, btw). Besides ads, of course. If the paid version has more to it, then I will happily drive a mile up the road to the local bar for the wi-fi connection that Amazon seems to think it needs now. But if there isn’t a difference then I’m just as happy to not go up to that place & have to order a drink & hang out for at least half an hour while it downloads. Ugh. Living in the boonies. :/

Rank: Master Slinger with 6700 points

I have played both versions, with earlier games, and haven’t noticed any difference. Sometimes Amazon get the updates first and sometimes Google Play does, but other than that, they are the same. Eventually both versions get the same updates. If the ads bother you, just restart the game or play in airplane mode :)-works great on my phone.

By Matt

Sad day. I was looking forward to AB:S, but to see Rovio hit by corporate greed… Guess the $1 purchase of the app and $1 purchase of the eagle wasn’t enough. Now I can buy eagle uses?

I’m sure you’ll still make tremendous profits Rovio; I’m positive there are suckers out there willing to go along with it to make up for the loss of me as a customer, but it truly saddens me to see you break from tradition so horribly.

ABN.com staff/volunteers, thanks for a great website, I’ve really enjoyed it and your walkthroughs have certainly helped me through some difficult levels, but with all Angry Bird apps removed off my iOS devices, I doubt I’ll have reason to visit again.

By Karyna

You are totally right Matt!!!! They want to get rich so fast…they saw that the game was so expected …and people are crazy. To play it! For unlock the “danger zone” i must pay it…ok i understand that…but for mighty eagle 980* = 19.99$ it seem to be weird…because old time for buy mighty eagle was 0,79€ and we could use it any time! Anyway i love this game…but i can play it without use the ME…that’s it! Maybe Rovio will see that’s wrong what they are doing! Have a nice day!

Rank: Sling God with 33680 points
By sparty83 (@sparty83)

No one says you have to buy additional Eagle uses. As an andriod player, I don’t even have the Mighty Eagle. I don’t even have the option to buy it. I do play AB on facebook and that was the first experience with the Eagle. There you also have the options to buy the Eagle and other powerups, but I simply just don’t.

By Matt

I’m sorry to hear Droid users get the poor end of the deal with no Eagle, but for me it added a lot of replay value to the game.

Probably the biggest reason I use to tell my friends to get this game if they had an iOS device was because of the amazing value you got for your $2.

$1 buys you the game, hundreds of levels, tons of hours of entertainment, especially as you hunt down 3 stars and all the achievements. For just one more dollar you unlock a new way to play the game and you get to go through every single level again trying to get the Eagle Feather.

Space will not be as fun without the Eagle Feather, I won’t support Rovio’s new found corporate greed so I won’t support any future Rovio products until they give me a permanent eagle unlock that can be purchased for a dollar like all the previous Angry Birds editions.

Rank: Sling God with 28590 points
By MVNLA2 (@mvnla2)

Maybe not $1, but certainly unlimited uses! I thought the greed displayed for ME on facebook was facebook, but must be Rovio as well. They have rejected the market plan that made them so much money.

By matma

I hate how they nickel-and-dime you to death. If you want more money CHARGE more money UP FRONT. But sell me the whole game, don’t rent me pieces of it. Rovio seems to have become the greedy pigs we’ve been throwing birds at all this time.

Rank: Master Slinger with 7095 points
By HKG (@hkg)

When I first played it, I thought “Oh, it’s so easy!” But as I moved through the levels, I sometimes find it difficult to achieve 3 stars! In some cases, there are quite a number of permutations, making it a real challenge to determine the optimal move. It’s such a great game!

Rank: Hardened with 730 points
By ladycrumb (@ladycrumb)

Enjoying the game, but not so much having to buy the eagle for each use. I don’t mind buying the Danger Zone so much since I can play it as often as I want, but paying for each eagle is too much. I wouldn’t mind so much if it were per level but this is just a greedy money grab IMO. Oh well, the danger zone looks to be challenging enough that I won’t need the eagles to keep me busy.

Rank: Hardened with 730 points
By ladycrumb (@ladycrumb)

I remember when the ME was introduced in the original game. Rovio didn’t explain how it would work too well at first and there was a lot of confusion and bad feelings because people thought they were going to have to buy the eagle for each use. Finally Rovio said something to the effect that they were angry, not evil and ME was a one-time buy. Guess things have changed now….

On PC, all past apps were $4.95, not $5.95. Also, the title says “Angry Birds Spaces” when it should be “Space”.

Rank: Master Slinger with 6700 points
By wanda (@wanda)

I thought it seemed higher, but it was early, hadn’t had my coffee yet:). I play on PC and android and don’t have the mighty eagle, but it seems from reading some of the comments that the price for that also increased. Then again, space travel ain’t cheap! However, $19.99 does seem pretty steep to me. Makes me glad I don’t play on the iOS platform, because it would be hard to pass up that cool looking eagle.

By Nanami Kamimura

I play on both iOS and Android, and when I can never have the Mighty Eagle in this case, I decided not to care less of having it. I only have the Eagle at Seasons decidedly because the levels there are frustratingly hard. But I do see that price for multiple uses of the Space Eagle will be a very big issue, unless, as somebody already said here, Rovio should explain about this. I’ve already tweeted about this a little bit earlier.(http://www.twitlonger.com/show/giesu6).

Also, with or without the Eagle, I have fun playing it so far.

I am enjoying learning all the new strategies in this game, but I was really surprised about the $5.95 rather than $4.95

I wonder if I paid more for the Amazon Android app. I just clicked the buy button and didn’t pay attention to whether or not the price had gone up. I bought it rather than playing the free version because I want to support Rovio.

About the ME, I definitely wouldn’t buy it the way they are doing it now, even if it was available to me.

Rovio has always been super generous with their updates. I’ve thought for a long time that they should charge another .99 for a new update after every three 45 level updates or something like that. I don’t think anyone would mind paying that. Also, if unlimited ME was available for .99 on every platform, and you had to pay for it again for unlimited use on new updates, I doubt too many people would feel ripped off.

I don’t think that updates should be $5.95 on the PC though. The updates should be .99 on there as well, once you have purchased the game.

That would ensure that Rovio would keep making money, and their customers wouldn’t get too upset with them. Paying every time you want to use ME sux.

Rovio….are you KIDDING ME here with what you are wanting to charge for the Mighty Eagle in this game? Don’t get me wrong, I understand that you should be rewarded for your efforts into game play, but $20, and even then you still might have to use need more…? The game itself is $.99…and that is just RIDICULOUS beyond reproach that you would elect to go that route with the Mighty Eagle with this game…Charge me something fair, $4.99 for instance for unlimited use, but not this crap where you get charged on a per use basis…and going by past experiences, you need multiple uses just to clear a single board, you could easily eat up 10-15 uses per level…. I have lost a TON of respect for you guys with the bad move and I for one will NOT be purchasing the Mighty Eagle as a result, unless you change your strategy in a BIG way.
