Were you one of those silly people who thought that Angry Birds Rio was extinct? For shame! But we are willing to forgive you, as Rio v1.5.0 is now available for iOS and Android via Google Play and the Amazon AppStore, with more platforms coming soon. This is the first update to the app in nearly nine months, but I’m certainly not one to complain about free levels!
Attention Android users: If you are unable to update via the Google Play app on your device, use a regular Internet browser go to Google Play’s website. Select “Internet” if prompted, sign in your account, and you should see an “Update” button under “My Android Apps”. (Thanks @PJng for this info.)

Not only is this release very surprising, but it adds a lot of new things to the app, for all platforms.
This Update Includes
- 18 new levels! These levels appear within each of the six sequential episodes, and are unlocked by earning stars. For example, Star Level #1 is unlocked by earning 30 stars in Smuggler’s Den, Star Level #2 by 50 stars, and Star Level #3 by 70 stars. (Thanks @josm.)
- 6 more levels! These also appear within each of the six sequential episodes, and are unlocked by earning 10 feathers within the episode. Note that, unlike the Sardine Can levels in Angry Birds Space, you earn 3-stars on these levels via classical gameplay.
- Power Ups! Two of them are familiar to anyone who has been around for the past couple of months, one has been seen before if you are playing the Winter Tournament on Facebook, and the last is completely new. See more below.
- Mighty Eagle for Google Play! Yes, our beloved feathery hero has been released for yet another Android app via Google Play. You can unlock his ability — unlimited uses, just like for iOS — for $0.99 USD. For those keeping track, the Mighty characters are now available for 4 out of 5 Android apps!
- Awards Room! While this isn’t new, it’s nice to see Rovio finally gave a name to the episode. Note that we called the episode “Trophy Room” back when there was no name, so hopefully you can navigate our walkthroughs without much difficulty.
- New achievements for iOS! One for collecting all mangoes, and one for 3-starring the Trophy Room!
- iPhone 5 optimization!
Power Ups
Yes, Power Ups have appeared in Angry Birds Rio. While certainly everyone is entitled to their opinion, we kindly ask that you do not vent any frustrations here. We have a forum thread specifically dedicated to the topic that Rovio is well-aware of.
OK, back to business. Power Ups are now available for iOS and we believe Android via Google Play. Here’s the low-down on these in-app purchases:
- Bundles are available and add quantities to all four power ups. These can be purchases as an 80-pack for $4.99 USD, 160-pack for $9.99, 360-pack for $19.99, or a 740-pack for $39.99.
- Specific purchases are available as well, where you can buy your favorite (or most needed) power up alone. Buy a 30-pack for $1.99, 80-pack for $4.99, 170-pack for $9.99, or 400-pack for $19.99.
- Super Seeds: We’ve seen this guy before and he’s a classic at this point. Using Super Seeds makes the bird in the slingshot larger and more destructive.
- Sling Scope: Also typical, Sling Scope adds a dotted line that shows you the trajectory your bird will take.
- TNT Drop: This power up was just released for Angry Birds: Friends on Facebook during the Winter Tournament. It places three TNT scattered around the level, resulting in extreme additional destruction if you manage to trigger them!
- Samba Burst: This power up is Rio-exclusive (at least for now, though with the super-specific name, I doubt we will see it elsewhere). Samba Burst places a fruit hat on the bird in the slingshot. When the bird hits a structure, it will dance the Samba. The tagline says that “Even building will sway to its rhythm”, making it a mix between Blu’s normal ability and the classic Birdquake power up.
- No distinction between scores. Still very disappointed in this. I know I’m supposed to be neutral and only present the facts, but we very strongly believe that such a system is beneficial to all players and must insist on expressing this concern.

I haven’t played Rio since June this year aven I never took daily challenge when it was level from Rio, but I DID like it once, great gameplay, music and such a lovely colorful designed levels. I will enjoy update as well.
And I am one of those “silly” who didn’t expect any updates in Rio, even if it is not new episode these bonus levels are nice update.

I’m confused! I have RIO & I have achieved 3 stars on every level, found all the fruit AND 3 stars in every level of the Trophy Room…where is my update!?
Obviously I’m missing something…i have gone to Google Play but RIO doesn’t give me the option to update only to Open or Uninstall…i play on an ASUS Transformer tablet (android) and i THINK it was included in the update??
This is the first time I’ve ever posted here so to be honest, im not even sure I’m doing THIS right! LOL!

It seems that daily rewarded power ups are on 24 hours mode. I just got one for phone (I oppened game about this time yesterday) and still don’t have any new power up for iPad (I updated game last night about 15 hours earlier).
No ad free in-app purchase? Hmmm. That’s a sad omission.

I have a stupid question. The anger management DLC pack lands on ABT on Xbox 360 and ps3, but what is DLC?

If i look to the Leaderboards i don’t know what is right. Most levels i played intensively but i am Not nearly there by some scores :-(
@catsnbirds @wanda I have a smartphone, which is about 3.5″ x 2″ (inside dimensions). It is not like the Samsung with a larger screen. You can imagine how tiny the playing area becomes with power-ups.
Then, imagine all those resets when your first fling is not targeted where you wanted it. Reset, little lightening bolt to make power-ups disappear, fling bird, reset, lightening bolt, fling, reset, lightening bolt, you get the idea.
@birdlady I have been playing mainly on my kindle for that reason. Even with my glasses on, I was constantly hitting the lightning bolt!
@catsnbirds they bug me on my kindle, but at least I usually don’t hit them:). I wish they could be hidden.
Love the new levels for Rio all starred and feathered! This holiday season has seen a lot of Angry Birds updates…Tia the season! Not venting but could do without that menu popping out at the beginning of each level blocking my view, still Love the update!!

How is that any different than ABo? Or the free Space Eagle in AB:Space? They didn’t have to give anything!
In ABO they give you 3 PUs each day. Granted there is only one SE in ABSp. But still, they are getting more greedy with each introduction of PUs.

@superbrick — Like many ABN members, I am against power ups, because they make the competition dependent on one’s ability to shell out money for PUs. I have supported Rovio by buying all their games and have never complained about extra $ for unlimited use MEs or special levels (and I have them all). I don’t use the PUs in ABO, so I have quite a few, but I do intend to use the free SEs in ABSp, when I get enough.
Then just ignore PUs.

Well @mvnla2, how I invented it was I was signing up for an account service a long time ago. And I am a fan of LEGO company. (Notice the avatar) But “SuperBrick” was taken as a username, so I chose SouperBrick to dodge it. It has been my username for almost every account service since. If the account name is too long, I go for Myc, my nickname.
@amlimfordy Using Samba Burst doesn’t necessarily give the bird in the slingshot the power, rather it acts like Terence the Hunter, replacing the first bird (no matter the case) with a Festive Red Bird.

The PUps aren’t really so powerful. In some levels Most of them have no sense !!!
The ABN post and the above questions are very informative. Played a few levels for three stars and ME feathers. Appears to be just a tad more challenging and that a exact location hit (to a block by a bird) is required to provide any damage. Noticed that hitting a block at its corner provides no damage where as hitting the same block in the middle is the precise location to provide the maximum damage. It may just be me but will have to play more to be sure.
I agree. It gets a little bit more puzzling to get three stars as the levels progress. The power-ups are OK at this time but only if a power-up disabling button would come soon. Overall, a nice and challenging update.

Yet another reason not to pay attention to GameCenter; my Rio leaderboard score is too high by 142,800. Kinda blows the only reason I ever check gamecenter — to verify that I entered correct scores on this site. Grrrr.

on the subject of Rio, my sound is muted, even when it says its on. Rovio has it in their FAQ, and i done what it says, and it dosent work. Anyone know how to fix it?

@pighater2009 is every game is muted? Check the in game muting button. If its ok, then try repairing rio. Just click installation file and do repair. It should work. Backup your score first,just an extra caution. Let me know

On PC, there are three points to check if you have no game sounds:
1. Ensure the game app isn’t muting (no red circle on the control.)
2. Ensure that your soundcard device driver isn’t muting through Windows.
3. Ensure that the physical volume control on your PC speakers is turned up.
If necessary, you can download and install updated device drivers for your sound card.

That’s the little speaker icon in the system tray, which is on the left side of the Windows taskbar. This control should be adjustable to show different views, and should have a number of slider controls for speaker volume, balance, microphone volume, and others, depending on your sound card, and the drivers it came loaded with. The mute function is a checkbox, usually at the bottom left of the master volume control. This should be UNchecked. The presence of a check mark usually activates the muting of the audio output.

@pighater2009: Which version of Rio do you have on your PC? v1.5.0 is still pending 79.5+ hours after iOS/Ansdroid release. v1.4.4 is the current downloadable version.

Just a note, on meeting the star threshold for opening the bonus levels. Stars obtained on the bonus levels do not count toward obtaining enough stars to open subsequent bonus levels within that episode. Found that on my wife’s iPad where the second page of Smuggler’s Plane has yet to be completed. Counter remained at 45/50 and 45/70 even after three starring the first bonus level. I hope I explained this well enough to make sense.
Love the new update! However, when I bought the $20.00 pack I thought it would give me 360 of each, but it gave me 90 of each. I then found out it divided up the 360 power-ups in the bundle evenly between the 4.
If Rovio planning to do Fruit Market in next update, i would be really happy if they make the song ”party” of blu and jewel dancing in fruit market scene, the background music of the episode. That song is awesome!

I contacted Amazon, and I found that they are slow to never in updating free versions. I paid for the ad-free versions of AB Rio, ABo, ABSp and ABS. They only did ABS for the WW update. Amazon never did update AB Space free version only HD.
It seems as though Amazon is pushing users to the HD versions with the release of the Kindle Tablet and HD devices. Amazon says to contact Rovio, as it’s not their problem. I will do that, but thanks so much for the customer support and helpfulness in the inerim, Amazon.
Sorry but part of what you said is untrue. Amazons Space “Free” version is completely up-to-date.
In fact, it looks to me that most-if-not-all editions are at equal versions across Amazon’s Free, Ad-Free and HD apps.
@slimfordy I should have clarified, my bad. Amazon does have much for Android OS. Merry Christmas Eve.
When you enter the Kindle world, it is a whole new environment of OS systems. It is generically Android based, open source coding, but Amazon has tight control over what is available or compatible with Kindle, especially prior to HD and Tablet.
Unless you want to root your device, not recommended for the faint of heart and if you ever want support from Amazon again in the future for Kindle device.
Hence, a lot of what is released for Android via Google or Amazon is not available for Kindle, which is particulary true for 1st and 2nd gen Kindles (e.g. ABSW free not available for Kindle).
@birdlady I’ve found that Amazon usually has the updates within 10 days of Google Play, not sure why there is such a delay. We did get Rio first :).
@birdlady, just checking to see if you got the amazon update. If so, does your icon show the pc version? I saw a strange icon on my kindle and checked for the update. It downloaded fine, but the icon was different for a few days. It if finally back to normal..
@wanda Sorry for the delay. Have not been to the Nest in a while. No different looking icons on Kindle yet, but updates still very slow to be available.
However, icons on Android are different with recent updates. They all have Rovio logo in the upper, rignt-hand corner.
Since this update all fruit points (e.g. bananas, melons, apples) are reset to zero! It says 0/15. Has anyone the same problem? Is there a solution?
What device are you playing on? It sounds like your settings file may have been corrupted during the update. Have you tried re-obtaining the fruit? It may be the only solution, unfortunately.

I can re-obtain the fruit. So if I am in the right mood I will do all the fruit jobs aigain :-)
It’s better to make a backup of your progress, in case something else goes wrong again. There is a great guide on this site for that. :)
If you are looking for a good backup app, try angry backup by Whitney Champion. They are on Google play. They work great, except you lose your space eagles if you have to restore your progress. All of my Rio fruit and scores were intact.

Sorry for barging in the thread like this but I am afraid you are right. All people thought that the primary focus was the update with these levels but with Rovio it was just the opposite. They gave PUPs the primary focus and if that is true then I’m afraid PC flingers like us won’t get this update.(Maybe they would include these levels along with Fruit Market)
I have a question hopefuly someone could help .i jus recently….well today purchast the unlimited Mighty Eagle and also the 80 bundle package for $4.99..and then a while later I stupidly cleard my data for angry birds..and now everything I just purchast is gone, is there anyway I could get it back or do I have to purchase it again…i have an android..i purchast these from google play
“Re-purchasing” the Mighty Eagle should be free. A one-time purchase such as the ME is stored and recoverable.
Power Ups, however, are a different matter. These are called “consumable” in-app purchases. If the purchase was so recent, maybe contacting Google Play is the best course of action, but I offer no promises. In general, consumable IAPs are lost.
Hi, ever since I updated, I get these push notifications on my iPad. It’s really annoying! Can you help?
When I go to the iPad settings, all notifications are turned off. When I go to angry birds rio in main settings it only tells me the version number but no option to turn notifications of!
Please help. If these daily push notifications don’t stop, I have to uninstall the game.

Joe I hated the exact same thing. Make sure you go to Ipad settings> notifications > select the little ABRio icon and on that screen turn off ALL the following: notification center, badge app icon, sounds, and view in lock screen. That should take care of it.

Looks like Amazon is receiving the update (downloading as I’m typing), but there’s no icon for the app, weird. It says that it requires new permissions (don’t know what that means). It is v1.5.0.
