Almost two years after their successful partnership with Fox for Angry Birds Rio, Rovio is set to release a Free new game on March 14th based on the DreamWorks animated movie The Croods, which comes to theaters a week later on March 22nd. The game will launch globally on iOS and Android.
Set in the Croodeceous period, The Croods are a caveman family of hunter-gatherers. Based on the little information released so far, we know that it won’t be a “physics” game as usual. The gameplay looks sim-based, where you grow and nurture your world for survival. Check out the screenshots down below. We’ve also included some info from the press release.
If you happen to come across some new details or footage? Please share them via the comments. Thanks!

Gameplay like Farmville? Oh no I hate farmville…
Me too hate farmville
I also don’t like Farmville.
I’ve never played farmville but from what I’ve seen from others, it looks like a game where you have to go back to often to keep things moving along. Since there are IAP’s for both iOS and Android, I’m guessing it’s a safe bet that there will be some sort of IAP for this as well.
Guess this explains all the full screen vid commercials for the movie i got while playing AB Space.
We are guessing a little from the footage.
The proposed animation looks great and the game-playing strategy appears interesting from what can be deducted from the video, information and gallery above. My cousin has played Farmville for years and from what she has mentioned they keep adding new items, levels, tasks, etc., to keep the interest and extend the game playing.
I looked up IAP’s in Wikipedia and the best conclusion viewed is “In-app purchase”. Is that what IAP means @sparty83? Sorry I am not up on all the acronyms.
IAP= In App Purchase, yes
@wrw01, confirming what @josm stated earlier. IAP referrs to In App Purchase.
@Sal9 — You forgot to mention that the game is apparently free. I guess Rovio’s new game plan consists of free games with lots of IAPs. Ugh!
freemium. I bet Rovio is bummed that Apple fixed their IAP issue and now lets you turn it off.
Thanks @mvnla2 , the post was updated to reflect the press release. We don’t know at this point if there will be any IAP. I must say, they did not give us much about the game itself.
I could never find appeal in those kind of games and have no clue how to play them. For what I know is that they usually have tons of IAPs. I don’t think I’d play it but my girls might find it interesting.
I think I’ll pass on this one. Like others have said, these kinds of games usually have a ton of IAPs with them and they require you to check back constantly.
Exactly, the game gets control of you!
Will this game available for PC after iOS & Android release ?
We don’t have that information.
I LOVE these kinds of games (the ones where you actually tend to your animals or whatever) but I HATE IAPs!
Hmmm….. Will there be walkthroughs on site? Like… Oh wait. There couldn’t really be walkthroughs.
It really depends on how the game is designed. Walkthroughs are not uncommon for strategy games.
I love games like this!
Yes it looks like farmville :-) it would be interesting if ROVIO add it also on Facebook :-) what do you think about because i think that would be a Competition!?
The Croods film? Sorry-but it has already been done!

If this game worked like the original Legend of Zelda, where you earned diamonds and power ups by strategy and clues, it could be fun. If it has IAPs, I won’t play it. I’ve never played Farmville or any other game that has IAPs, and I don’t do IAPs in any of the Angry Birds games, except the one time purchase of Mighty Eagle. I do have the paid versions of Rovio’s games on the computer as well as on my phone, so I’m not just cheap, but I preferred the old way of earning power ups by skill. The one time purchase of Mighty eagle was different. It was like buying a new kind of gameplay. Buying power ups is just a waste of money.
The real relevant mash up would Be Angry Birds and The Walking Dead.
Red – Rick
Yellow – Daryl
Bomb – Merle
Terrance – T-Dog
Blues – Carl, Glenn, Maggie
Stella – Carol
Matilda – Michonne
Orange – Hershel
Boomerang – Shane
Pigs – Governor (king), all others
The Croods is live in Finland and Canada for now, on Google Play according to Twitter sources!

This game looks similar to the game Ice Age Village which was based off the movie ‘Ice Age: Continental Drift’. That game app was released before the movie which was a big hit. You don’t harvest any food but you can make your village larger by adding animals and making each have a family of 4. I love these types of games too. They are very addicting just like all the Angry Birds games. I cant wait for the Croods game to come out.
it’s not 14 march but the game is on android!! in: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rovio.croods
I just saw this
That´s weird.
Dos anyone know if it is available for iOS?
i found on google play , you can search in the appstore
Just downloaded the game and well…I don’t know. I had a weird problem, suddenly there was an error that said “game need internet connection” (even when there was a connection) and then it was syncing for few minutes. When the game finally loaded again, I had lost some of my progress and had to do tasks again. That happened several times and then I lost my nerves. I tested my internet connection but there was nothing wrong, so I’m not sure why the game noted me about that. Well, maybe I’ll try again a bit later, ’cause it seemed like a nice game, those animals are funny :)
Is this game going to be free? Most games like this are and then make their money off the IAPs.
@lostgreybird according to description on Google Play: “The Croods is completely free to play, but some in-game items can be purchased for real money. If you don’t want to use this feature, please disable in-app purchases.
Also, please note that a network connection is required to play.”
great, I don’t allow myself to pay for these games because I know they take up too much of my time & therefore I shouldn’t play them. But I do get love playing them so when they are free I like to check them out.
Game total waste of time. Keeps telling me I need an Internet connection when I’m connected to the Internet. Thought initially my router but re set it and game still same. So deleted app and then reloaded it. And again it says no internet..did a bit of looking on the web and it seems to be an issue across the board. So won’t be playing.
You can start tiny and steadily enjoy for more money.
Is there a way to play now?
