Ethics in game development!

  • This “bug” that Rovio applied to all high ranking players really destroys the arena, and the game for me. I hope you realize that you are penalizing the people who are buying diamonds and playing your game the most! I’ve seen card updates but for some reason, no fix for the problem? What kind of ethics do you operate under? Maybe you should prioritize fixing the issue so people actually get what they are paying for. How about responding to my email about cheaters? How about setting up a system where Rovio can send a consolation black diamonds to the people beat by cheaters? It’s frustrating playing a game I enjoy, and then changes being made that ruin the game for the people that enjoy it the most….the high ranking players. And then it’s frustrating to get ZERO customer service or product when I give feedback, point out cheaters, my game has crashed many times resulting in various rewards not being given, including black pearls one time. Meanwhile Rovio’s credit card system is working A.O.K. and you’re able to take money from people. People take your product seriously and enjoy it. I wish yall could get your ducks in a row so I could fully enjoy the game again like all the new players do….sure seems sketchy like Rovio is purposely doing this to get people who have already proven they’ll buy diamonds, to spend more on diamonds. Aloha, Tyler

    Angry Birds 2 doesn’t even come close to probably the best ranked mobile backgammon game in terms of ethics… I won’t name the company, but I’ve played nearly 10,000 games of backgammon, and each game saved play by play. After writing some serious Python code and doing some equally serious statistical analysis, I found out how they cheat.

    They try to guess the random number generator seed, which, once done, allows them to guess what’s coming in the dice. All it took was an observation that the game plays relatively reasonably the first X games then after a certain point the miracles begin. The first X games are when it tries to guess the seed. Once you know the seed it’s game over.

    Ethics is not relevant as long as enough people willing to pay the game maker buying in-game contents.

    I used to buy in app, but stopped when the overt manipulation became grossly apparent. It’s too stressful (and expensive) to stay on top, for a game that I inherently enjoy. I’ve let myself slide back several levels in the arena, and now usually just play once a day to collect the gems (which I won’t pay for, anymore). It will take a much longer time to upgrade birds, but I really don’t care anymore.

    Rovio could start by fixing the blatant offenses:

    – Terrence
    – Chili always going for the highest located pig
    – ducks
    – destructometer always ending game 95% full and slowing down for you at the end but accelerating towards end for your opponent
    – 3 or 4 M points from a single bird for your opponent only

    Most of the topics in this Forum, no matter the title, end up complaining about the the tweaks, manipulations, endless changes in the Game that make what used to fun (early players remember when) into something stressful and expensive if advancement is desired. So it must be clear that the Game developers are not acting ethically. Then is it not understandable that players who discover and exploit ‘advantages’ are doing so to level the playing field? I am not talking about Hackers who do what they do because they can … and enjoy creating chaos. I’m talking about players as we are who enjoy the Game and feel exploited finding ways to keep playing in a more level playing field. And yet we here condemn them in the same way we admonish the Game developers. ?????????????

    Surely it is clear by now that the continuous call for a fair Game is pointless! It is not going to happen. The most ethical developer, Bankler, is long gone and the new breed are in charge. We must get over it! I say develop a strategy. Find a way to play. Stop whining and complaining. Or … as some I played with have done, uninstall the Game and move on.

    I saw your PM before reading this, Kt. What about ethics? I have no answers on that question. I did what I could in hopes of helping the game be fair. That went down the drain.

    I guess I just don’t care any more. Yes, I remember when the game was fun, really fun. Days when I was obsessed with it. Back when I fought hard to place in the arena, to win. No more.

    But ethics, or being ethical? Companies are in business to make a profit. Nobody forces us to play. And nobody forces us to spend money. This isn’t the only game that pushes people to spend. I have read where people have spent $20,000 or so. Who is to blame for that? I say the game makers are pretty smart and the people spending so much on the game aren’t. I would compare it to gambling, only there are no monetary rewards here. Not even a chance.

    I agree with you, if it ain’t fun any more, delete the app and walk away. I have said it before, I just like knocking things down and AB2 is the best in the series.

    Yes, business exists to profit, but from my point of view to dismiss ethics as having no place in business is a deep a misunderstanding about the foundation of a decent society. And this problem has become widespread.

    That said, the Game Masters monitor this Forum and know that a small band of revolutionary players have found various ways to survive the manipulations of the Game and, I believe, write it off as the cost of doing business. Long time players as we are won’t stay with the Game without finding ways to level the playing field and not hemorrhage cash. I feel it is quite fair for we players to do so and the Game Masters have been well informed by you and other players what we have discovered about playing the ‘Game within the Game’. That is the ‘Game’. I am still having fun and am not conflicted about this. I continue to play and enjoy the Game and post daily with my friends. If the advantages I use are nullified, I will join those of my friends who left the Game. Till then, I’m about having fun with all this.

    I do not disagree at this point, KT. I replied to your PM and think I said as much.

    Now, you mention The Game, and you made me lose The Game for the first time in a very long time. And now you will be playing The Game …

    Rule 1: You are playing The Game.
    You, along with everyone else in the world, always is, always has been,
    and always will be playing The Game. Neither awareness nor consent is required to play.

    Rule 2: Every time you think about The Game, you lose.
    Loss is temporary; as soon as you forget about The Game you stop losing.
    The objective of The Game is to forget that it exists. Good luck.

    Rule 3: Loss of The Game must be announced.
    Every time you think about The Game, and hence lose, you must say so.
    This is the only rule that can be broken, but do you really need to cheat..?

    Welcome to The Game. :)

    @ktcain

    Are you playing there, Cap’n, at that link?

    My Game is to never lose awareness, and that is definitely the challenge. But I persevere. :0)

    CaptSternn
    @captsternn

    I just found the rules at that link. I knew about The Game many years ago. Used to play it with people on other sites, sites that no longer exist. That is why I forgot about it. Forgot until you reminded me, and then I lost.
