Angry Birds World Traveler: Concept and Infographic

We all have been wondering what the future holds for Angry Birds. While we all would like to see the original app and Seasons continuing onward, it seems -– or it was at least the initial plan -– that Rio would end in November (-ish). So, if Rovio chooses to close out Rio by year’s end, what would happen after that?

Well, everyone has been talking about an “Angry Birds 2: Revenge of the Pigs” -– an app where the pigs retaliate against the birds. While I may be biased (I’m a fan of the birds, not the pigs) I think this app is rather limited. Basically, what special abilities can the pigs have?

Our idea is by no means unique, but I think it is a possibility when we look at the “Mooncake Festival” episode of Seasons. A new app called “Angry Birds: World Traveler” with seven episodes (not necessarily 45 levels each, but between 15 and 45 is fine). The pigs steal the eggs outside of Helsinki (Espoo to be precise) and start catching planes, trains, and automobiles (and boats, but I wanted the movie reference) around the world.

Episode 1 – Europe

The pigs begin, of course, in Finland. Over the course of the episode, they flee from the Scandinavian Peninsula, cross Germany and Poland, check out France, etc. etc. Of course, not every country in Europe can be represented (there are 50 of them), but if possible that would be cool as well. On one hand, it would be fun to see the sites. On the other, it would be educational for children. Kids and their parents could go through and see if they can name each country based on the background. The Parthenon in Greece, the Pope’s pad (aka St. Peter’s Basilica) in Vatican City, the Eiffel Tower in France, Big Ben in the UK, and many more. Either way, the birds and pigs would work their way east-to-west, eventually crossing the pond to…

Episode 2 – North America

Now, not just the good ol’ U.S. of A., but North America consists of 23 countries. We can go east-to-west to begin with, landing in New York and seeing some of the major cities in both the US and Canada (e.g., DC, Ottawa/Quebec/Montreal, Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles). The pigs then venture south of the border to Mexico City and Central America, Isthmus of Panama, and the Caribbean Islands. They continue their boat ride into…

Episode 3 – South America

South America only has 12 countries, so we can visit each a few times, but some of the sights there are amazing. My personal favorite is Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (you may recognize it from the splash page in the app “Rio”). We enjoy the mixture of mountains and jungles, stopping off in Venezuela, Chile, Ecuador, and Machu Picchu in Peru, working our way north-to-south. When we reach Buenos Aires, Argentina and boat our way to…

Episode 4 – Africa

We land in Cape Town, South Africa. After a quick stop in Madagascar, the pigs flee north to the temple at Yeha in Ethiopia in the east and the Tichitt Walata in Ghana in the west. After a long, tiring trek across the Sahara, the pigs arrive in Cairo, Egypt. Amidst the sea of sand, we see the pyramids and the Great Sphinx. (Which creature in the morning goes on four legs, at mid-day on two, and in the evening upon three, and the more legs it has, the weaker it be?) We arrive at the Suez Canal and cross into…

Episode 5 – Asia

The Suez will bring you from Egypt into Israel. Again, probably too many countries to hit them all (48 of ’em), but hitting the highlights is of course educational. We work our way west-to-east, seeing Mount Everest in Nepal, the Great Wall in China, Eastern Russia (Moscow and St. Petersburg are technically in Europe, so be weary), and ending at Mount Fuji in Japan. The pigs then boat to some of the Pacific Islands on their way to…

Episode 6 – Australia and Oceania

This is a subtle distinction, but you can do your own research and figure out the exact geographical qualifications for the area, but I think the idea is clear. The pigs will be island-hopping, hitting a few of the major cities is Australia (especially the Great Barrier Reef), checking out the Maori architecture of New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and many of the other beautiful islands. Oceania is rather small (only 14 independent countries), so there would be a deal of repetition involved here. Nonetheless, delve southward (pack your coat) and arrive in…

Episode 7 – Antarctica

Now, I will concede, there probably isn’t much to see in Antarctica. But here are some fun facts. Antarctica is the largest desert in the world, more than 2 million square-miles larger than the Sahara, though Antarctica receives twice the annual precipitation (8 inches) than the Sahara (3.9 inches). Temperatures can dip to -129°F (-89°C). To no surprise, there are no permanent residents, but at any given time, more than 2000 people will be on the continent. But nonetheless, Antarctica is awesome because it has penguins, and penguins = awesome. The pigs could bundle up in heavy coats, scarves, and penguin costumes. That sounds cool to me!

Of course, this list is nowhere near complete. There are many other countries that I have not listed and I apologize if I left your country or city off the list. I’m a mathematician, not a geographer or historian; nor do I have the space to list out every country in the world. But, in my opinion, this could be an awesome app! As a bonus, after completing a level, there could be an “information card” option that explains the background. For example, “The Eiffel Tower (1889), Paris, France” or “Machu Picchu (15th c.), Urubamba Valley, Peru”.

Heres an idea for an episode. The birds chase the pigs through all the islands (through the jungle, through the city, through the beach) and the final level is a boss level. It is by a volcano. Heres what happening; when the birds finally reach the pigs, the pigs have built a egg cooker over the volcano. The birds might fight before the volcano erupts and everything is lost.

I think an “Angry Birds Movies” app would be awesome. Every update has a theme of a successful movie franchise. For example: The app could release with a Star Wars episode and an Indiana Jones episode. Since Angry Birds is a worldwide game, worldwide successful movies would have to be included in the updates. Future updates could have the theme of Avatar, Harry Potter, Transformers, Lord of the Rings, etc.

what advantage to pigs have?
um… fatness?

You misread. I did not ask what advantage they have.

Basically, what special abilities can the pigs have?

That is, the bird have the ability to triple (blue), drop bombs (white), speed boost (yellow), be a bomb itself (black), boomerang (boomerang), or be a pure wreckingball (Big Brother). The pigs are just chubby balls of bacon and pork.

Random comment brought to mind by “pork” — my daughter watched a physics documentary and in recounting it to me, kept talking about “porks.” I eventually realized she meant “quarks,” but until then I was picturing these “pork” particles as small, round, and green. With little ears. And little piggy snouts.

No, Rovio, don’t end AB Rio. That is one of my favorite. What I really like about Rio are the hidden fruit. The golden eggs I like too but I like finding the hidden fruit the best. Maybe Rovio will do the same thing in the new app. Any Angry Bird app is fine by me. I think these are the best apps ever. (Ya’ll are geniuses for designing these games. Who would have thought slinging birds to kill the pigs would such a big hit. The tv show NCIS: Los Angeles even mentioned it on an episode.)
I can’t wait for the newest update for any AB. I 3-starred every level on all 3 apps n I recently downloaded the 2 available for the PC to keep me occupied in the mean time.

As much as I feel how sad you are, I am a fan of Rio too. Angry Birds Rio has to have a ending story. I know its sad but look at the bright side, at less it has a happy ending (also, thank for playing) and your ‘A hero of Rio’.

I love this! Angry Birds does span the world, it would be great to see the epic battle move over the continents. The Infographic is fabulous – weapons training with the marmosets, Guinness record on Mount Everest, penguins (and how about kangaroos?), etc. The Nest adds so much fun to the game. My thanks to all of you again!

But why they want to end rio?? any idea guys?? and will the airfield chase episode be available for PC users also (i mean through update)???

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

When Rio was launched in March, there were six clearly listed episodes: Smugglers Den, Jungle Escape, May, July, October, November. I don’t think they really want to end the app, but the movie concept will be long past at that point.

Rio seems to update for Mac/PC at full-episodic updates. Right now, mobile devices only have half of Airfield Chase with the other half expected soon. So I think Mac/PC will see their update within a few weeks of the next Rio update for mobile.

I hope you are right when you said you don’t think they end the app like that. {for no more playing}

I love the idea of a world traveler edition of Angry Birds. There are so many countries, and so many features in most of them that the game could go on indefinitely.

If Rovio wants to make more money, they can have you purchase an upgrade each time they switch continents or something. If they made it clear from the beginning, then nobody would be too upset about having to purchase upgrades. After all, this isn’t an expensive game, and Rovio needs to make money in order to keep us all happy.

I am one of those who doesn’t like the boss levels. I like the gameplay of Angry birds, and the boss levels are like playing an entirely different game, so I hope they don’t do that. I also hope that they continue with golden eggs and have a level for each egg as they do in Angry Birds and Seasons. I like finding the fruit in Rio, but we don’t get any reward for that, so it’s kind of a letdown.

Rovio has made a name for themselves by making all of their updates free, which I think they will continue to do. Of course, I would understand and have no issue paying for each episode, but with their massive following, $1 per person makes them a lot of money (+$1 if they add the Mighty Eagle).

By bearcatim

How about this idea. The angry birds calender. A new level every day themed to seasons, world events, etc. How nice would it be to wake up every day and have a level waiting for you. This idea has wings. Petition Rovio.

I like this idea, and when they finish with Antarctica the birds and pigs can visit the other planets and moons in the solar system. I really enjoyed the space levels in Seasons and want more.

Oh, and like another poster said, please, no more boss levels. I just don’t like them.

yeah i hated the boss levels too! they just don´t belong to original idea of angry birds i think!

Hey, here’s another idea – how about angry birds through history? Angry birds with dinosaurs in the background, angry birds with the pyramids being built in the background, and so on. Of course, a lot of history isn’t so nice, so maybe it’s not such a great idea.

Dinosaur episode called ‘Jurassic Pork’ !!

He doesn’t, what I believe he’s saying is that would be cool if we could do that (as a sort of reward).

By AngryBirdsFan

Well I can see why the Penguins but NOT Sonic the Hedgehog.Im a fan but I still think NO WAY!

By Dvitali

Wish they can work in the game the availabity to choose your own birds to solve any level. The replay level on the original and rio would be double the score if you can solve a level with the blue birds than with the black bombs.

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

Where’s the fun in that? I can’t imagine using a bird other than Big Brother or the Black Bird.

By Dvitali

once you earn three star on any level there is no replay value to go back and try for a higher score. If we could choose our own birds Rovio can assign point value to the birds
Blue=40
red=30
white=20
black= 10
big brother=5
then everybody can replay both the original and rio every level again and try for even higher score.

Awesome idea, Slim! I’ve always loved geography so throwing it in with my favorite game would be the ultimate. Love it and would love to play it!

I think that a “DIY” episode for the original version of Angry Birds would be lots of fun! Of course the scores wouldn’t count, it would be a little bit like the already existent “Golden Eggs”. These levels would have all the tools to create your own level. All materials, pigs and birds would be able to be chosen at the will of the player. Size sliders and rotate sliders would all add to the experience. With such free placement and design at hand, Angry Birds would appeal to many more in the future, people who, in the past, have struggled with some levels, would be able to create their own and enjoy the game outside the usual, often tedious, limits of the current developers. All of this is just an idea, and will probably stay one. There is always a chance, and I personally think it would be hours of fun, creating your own levels, that you can then save to test friends and family.

Cheers,
Alex.

That’s a great idea. I’d probably suggest each chapter (levels of 15) should be based on a specific country. But I think you (Bird Leader) already said it.

If Rio 2 came out, they may create a sequel. It mifht be likely, as some animated movies do have sequels. It’ll be pretty exciting.

By Lamia

Any idea….anything….i just want to keep playing angry birds.
I have a feeling that, tomorrow rio airfield chase half chap will come. And dunno why, it feels like, after 2-3 days or on the same day,whole chap will be updated for pc too. I think rovio may change the update history for pc.
Just my intution.

By stopshootinme

Random. I think it would be cool if Rovio made an app or some kind of program online where the fan can create their own levels and entered in a sweepstakes/contest.
The levels can be uploaded and downloaded by other user to play.
Every week for sometime the top 5 people win. The top five people are invited to Rovio studios and get to design a new level to be introduced in a future Angry Birds update.
IDK just a thought or maybe just have Rovio do a USA tour and do some kinda of special event in the major city for a day or two.

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

Rovio has done a contest before and the level is in the original app (the “Ethan” level, though the number alludes me). I like the idea of level editors, but I think it will still be a little while until we see it — if ever.

By QueenPig

Basicly, pigs are efficeint builders, relating to Angry Pigs.

By G-Unit

Not bad. My idea for taking AB to the next level is a make your own levels generator. It’d be a PC or Mac download. You can pick the background, pick the birds, and design the pigs and bricks however you want. Then you could upload and share your levels at a central site, and download them to your iPhone/iPad/android device, etc

Rank: Well Traveled with 1565 points

Im tellin you mighty eagle should be changed to where you get a “golden feather level” for getting all the feathers in one world. Its alot of work for just the achievement The level would be specifically for Mighty eagle. A huge level with lots to destroy but can use mighty eagle twice!

By G-Unit

I agree with this idea – I don’t like that when you get all the feathers in Mighty Eagle that you don’t get anything out of it in return!

By Oobgular

Remember “angry birds magic” for nokia? It was all finland based. That could be the first journey thing of this world travaler thing
