Were you one of those silly people who thought that Angry Birds Rio was extinct? For shame! But we are willing to forgive you, as Rio v1.5.0 is now available for iOS and Android via Google Play and the Amazon AppStore, with more platforms coming soon. This is the first update to the app in nearly nine months, but I’m certainly not one to complain about free levels!
Attention Android users: If you are unable to update via the Google Play app on your device, use a regular Internet browser go to Google Play’s website. Select “Internet” if prompted, sign in your account, and you should see an “Update” button under “My Android Apps”. (Thanks @PJng for this info.)
Note:Game icon maybe change to other page.”
Not only is this release very surprising, but it adds a lot of new things to the app, for all platforms.
This Update Includes
- 18 new levels! These levels appear within each of the six sequential episodes, and are unlocked by earning stars. For example, Star Level #1 is unlocked by earning 30 stars in Smuggler’s Den, Star Level #2 by 50 stars, and Star Level #3 by 70 stars. (Thanks @josm.)
- 6 more levels! These also appear within each of the six sequential episodes, and are unlocked by earning 10 feathers within the episode. Note that, unlike the Sardine Can levels in Angry Birds Space, you earn 3-stars on these levels via classical gameplay.
- Power Ups! Two of them are familiar to anyone who has been around for the past couple of months, one has been seen before if you are playing the Winter Tournament on Facebook, and the last is completely new. See more below.
- Mighty Eagle for Google Play! Yes, our beloved feathery hero has been released for yet another Android app via Google Play. You can unlock his ability — unlimited uses, just like for iOS — for $0.99 USD. For those keeping track, the Mighty characters are now available for 4 out of 5 Android apps!
- Awards Room! While this isn’t new, it’s nice to see Rovio finally gave a name to the episode. Note that we called the episode “Trophy Room” back when there was no name, so hopefully you can navigate our walkthroughs without much difficulty.
- New achievements for iOS! One for collecting all mangoes, and one for 3-starring the Trophy Room!
- iPhone 5 optimization!
Power Ups
Yes, Power Ups have appeared in Angry Birds Rio. While certainly everyone is entitled to their opinion, we kindly ask that you do not vent any frustrations here. We have a forum thread specifically dedicated to the topic that Rovio is well-aware of.
OK, back to business. Power Ups are now available for iOS and we believe Android via Google Play. Here’s the low-down on these in-app purchases:
- Bundles are available and add quantities to all four power ups. These can be purchases as an 80-pack for $4.99 USD, 160-pack for $9.99, 360-pack for $19.99, or a 740-pack for $39.99.
- Specific purchases are available as well, where you can buy your favorite (or most needed) power up alone. Buy a 30-pack for $1.99, 80-pack for $4.99, 170-pack for $9.99, or 400-pack for $19.99.
- Super Seeds: We’ve seen this guy before and he’s a classic at this point. Using Super Seeds makes the bird in the slingshot larger and more destructive.
- Sling Scope: Also typical, Sling Scope adds a dotted line that shows you the trajectory your bird will take.
- TNT Drop: This power up was just released for Angry Birds: Friends on Facebook during the Winter Tournament. It places three TNT scattered around the level, resulting in extreme additional destruction if you manage to trigger them!
- Samba Burst: This power up is Rio-exclusive (at least for now, though with the super-specific name, I doubt we will see it elsewhere). Samba Burst places a fruit hat on the bird in the slingshot. When the bird hits a structure, it will dance the Samba. The tagline says that “Even building will sway to its rhythm”, making it a mix between Blu’s normal ability and the classic Birdquake power up.
- No distinction between scores. Still very disappointed in this. I know I’m supposed to be neutral and only present the facts, but we very strongly believe that such a system is beneficial to all players and must insist on expressing this concern.
DISCLAIMER: PLEASE DO NOT ENTER SCORES WITH POWER UPS ON THE ANGRY BIRDS RIO LEADERBOARD

Can’t wait for the new RIO. Have checked several times now and still not available for me on android. Wonder if they are doing some sort of a staggered release based on time zone.
Sorry that I didn’t read your post above first sparty but I don’t believe so unless the server error I experienced trying to update it meant that they released it by mistake when it was not ready. I’m hoping that’s the cause but is there any android users who have been able to download it yet?
@thebirdbrain, I believe there have been a handful of andriod users that have been able to get it. Cosmo2503 said he got it. I checked the map forum and he is UTC +1. I am UTC -5. just assumed that they may do a staggered roll out based on time zones because of that, and figured there would be so many people trying to download it, it may overwhelm google’s servers.
Still don’t have it at 11:40 am eastern.
@sparty83 I always thought that games are available at same time worldwide, now that’s strange. Rio was updated on my device in morning hours CET. Hope that you finally updated it.
BTW, I am woman :-)
My most sincere apologies in assuming you were a man.
I finally got it this morning. I stopped checking during the day yesterday. Just figured it would come when it comes.
What joy! A holiday present! I did not see a ABR update coming so out of the blue like this! Thanks ROVIO!! Also, the samba burst is hilarious!!
Surprise update! :D But still no distinction between power-up scores :(
Is anyone else having trouble finding the update for Rio via android on google play? This morning when I tried to d/l the update I got a server error. I decided to try later and now it shows Rio has no updates. When I go in manually it just keeps showing the latest version the last one that added the trophy room levels. Would anyone recommend backing up and re-installing Rio or is there another workaround to this issue?
I’ve not gotten the update notification yet either. I DO NOT recommend backing up & reinstalling. I think plain old fashioned patience is our best course of action at this time.
”These levels appear within each of the six sequential episodes, and are unlocked by 3-starring sets of levels (like the Antenna Egg levels in Angry Birds Space).”
Not really!, example the levels by smuglers den, first level by 30 stars, second by 50 stars, and third by 70 stars ;)
mighty level unlocks by feather 10 levels
this all is the same by all 6 chapters.
How do you know this?
because i installed the app in this morning on google play, android
OK thanks. I’ll tweak the post. I had all the levels already unlocked, so I guessed.
You’re welcome, upload some screenshots for confirmation, https://www.angrybirdsnest.com/members/josm/album/
@ AMslimfordy, will this update land on pc? i am really waiting for these new levels.
As far as we know, the update will land for all relevant devices. However, the Eagle levels will only be available for those platforms that actually have the Mighty Eagle.
@ayan, Rovio posted this about 2 hours ago (approx 9:30 am eastern).
To those who have been waiting for an Angry Birds Rio update, we have something for you! Update here: http://rov.io/RioUpdate
When I clicked on the link, it took me to a PC version for download. Not sure if this is how you got your’s originally or not.
Rovio’s auto-generated links detect which platform you have and redirect you accordingly.
I purchased the game from Rovio’s shop. But the “Download Demo” is still showing v1.4.4. Guess PC users like us will have to wait.
It would be nice if they made it for us PC users that we got the mighty eagle levels but they would be already unlocked
How is that fair to the iOS/Android users who have to earn 10 feathers in order to unlock them?
true but us PC users are always the last ones to get updates, have never had the mighty eagle, pay way more for the app, shoot we don’t even have amazing alex and its been 6 months. Maybe they will make it different for pc users to unlock them but it wouldn’t be fair if we just simply don’t get the levels
and we don’t even have the option for power ups in the app like iOS/Android users they have more features for their versions of the game vs PC
1) There are plenty of platforms that receive updates after PC — most notably Mac.
2) The cost for PC is more because of the high-quality graphics that come with a PC screen.
3) I think Amazing Alex support is likely to be discontinued in the near future.
4) The issue with Power Ups and the Mighty Eagle for PC is the lack of in-app purchasing system.
maybe pc users will have to send an angry bird impersonation video to unlock the eagle levels, let’s wait and see…wanna have ’em though to maintain my leaderboard position…;-)
Or you could get “Angry coins” (look like the Credits from angry birds star wars facebook, but have red birds face on them) for 3 starring levels, and you can use them to get the eagle, and powerups, or maybe even golden egg hints!
Oh WOW! I am soooooo excited. I love Rio and cant wait to play. I dont see the update on Google Play yet. I will go to Google Play online instead of the app bcz sometimes the update shows available there but not thru the app. Also, checking Amazon.
Thank you so much Rovio! You are the best!
What a surprise!! also it is now optimised for the retina display on the iPad
What PU again? I cannot see it on google play, it showing new version 1.4.4.
Someone ask on twitter about GP
http://twitter.com/AngryBirds/status/281196659449401344
Yes, thats me, the error is over now!
And with this update, Rovio has now completely disenfranchised iPod touch 2nd Gen users. :(((((
Of all the iOS versions, I played Rio exclusively on the 2nd Gen. I hope the settings backup and restore will work to get my iOS Rio scores on my 3rd Gen…
Good news, I was successful in transferring my scores to the 3rd Gen! DiskAid really rocks! :D
All the new levels that met the criteria were unlocked, too. :D
Sorry I may be stupid but still don’t get it how to unlock those “new” levels. Can someone please further explain to me or show me?? Thanks.
One more thing, I never like “power ups”!!!!
Earn 30 stars on an episode to unlock the first “Star” level in that episode. 50 stars gets the second, 70 the third.
@AMslimfordy, I have 90/90 stars. Does that mean when I get this update the levels will already be unlocked(sans the Eagle levels)on my PC version?
If you have >70 stars on each episode, then all “Star” bonus levels will be unlocked.
Thank you, can’t wait for the Walkthroughs to come.
Thanks slim. I actually got 3 stars on all ABR episodes. Those “new” bonus levels appear at the bottom of the screen, right? I see 3 new levels on each episode page plus one special level that needs 10 feathers to unlock.
My final question is that are those new levels brand new ones (ie. never appeared or played before as some seem very similar to those levels I played before in Rio)? I could be wrong.
Thanks
I’ve never seen them before. And I have a good eye for these things ;)
Noted and thanks. Will go for it. Though i never played with the Eagle before so i guess i’d need some time to obtain the 10 feathers to unlock the last level on each esisode.
Excellent update for those with Android or iOS. However still waiting for PC. however I am still disappointed with Rovio for all these platform-exclusive levels, really wanted the Eagle level for PC.
I don’t think it is fair to criticize Eagle-exclusive levels.
Sorry. Actually,I am not criticizing but just sad about not being able to play get these levels(not to mention the Space Eagle bonus levels in Space)
@AMslimfordy, HI, I was wondering what the reasoning is with Rovio’s choice to not include the Mighty Eagle for PC format versions, I ask this because I remember that when I used to play AB on Google’s Browser, I paid $3.99 for exclusive unlimited use of the Mighty Eagle, and yet, it’s not transferable to my PC, even though I had it while using Google AB on the same PC.
I don’t think your comparison holds any water. Your comparing apples to helicopters here.
@AMslimfordy, I wasn’t making any comparisons, I was asking you the reasoning why Rovio hasn’t included the ME for PC’s?
@werewolf69, in general terms, the reasons you ask for fall into the areas of technicality, or legality. There may be others, but those I mentioned are the two biggest ones.
Thank you @TruckDriver for a reply that makes sense…so tell me, are these your regular playing hours, what time is it where you are? About 10PM?
@werewolf69, just what are “regular playing hours?” I play whenever I can, when I’m not driving or sleeping, or performing other minor functions. Whereever I am, and tonight it’s Nephi, UT, it’s always Pacific Time, since my home terminal is Fontana, CA, and FMCSA regulations require drivers to log by their terminal time zone.
So, right now, for me it’s just past 10, while for the locals, it’s just past 11.
@TruckDriver, since I’m semi-retired my playing hours are all day and all night, I’m sorry if my question flustered you, I was just making conversation… with that said, I won’t bother you any more.
@werewolf69, I wasn’t flustered, merely bemused, and the term implies far more regimentation then I’ve been able to muster for the last 30 years…. :-)
Wow!!!
Thank you very much @TruckDriver, that’s all I wanted, a straightforward answer…BTW, were you a Programmer or Systems Analyst in your previous Vocation? You certainly seem to have the qualifications and knowledge.
@werewolf69, you’re welcome. And yes, I was a programmer, but I walked away from it the last time I got downsized, as I was a burnout, amd I didn’t want to deal with those conditions brough on and/or aggravated by hypertension and stress. My interest now is more personal than professional, as I still relish the intellectual challenge of a good technical problem.
You made a very specific comparison: “when I used to play AB on Google’s Browser, I paid $3.99 for exclusive unlimited use of the Mighty Eagle, and yet, it’s not transferable to my PC, even though I had it while using Google AB on the same PC”
The PC system and the Chrome Store system have absolutely nothing to do with each other. The reason why IAPs is possible in the Chrome Store is because they have a payment system in place, along with a Cloud account which was necessary in order to play the game. There is nothing like this for the standalone, downloadable PC version: No IAP system, no sign-in system, no Cloud.
Okay, let’s try this one more time.
@AMslimfordy, HI, I was wondering what the reasoning is with Rovio’s choice to not include the Mighty Eagle for PC format versions?
@werewolf69, Slim’s got it right, no such system for PC has been implemented, which is why there is no ME for PC users.
From a strictly technological standpoint a PC based IAP system isn’t really necessary, as both PC architecture and the software logic structure support the use of add-on modules for a specific application. These can thus be sold, and downloaded seperately. As to why it hasn’t been done, in my opinion, this reflects an iOS-based bias on Rovio’s part that still lingers.
Rovio could use their own website to function in that manner, but for some reason, haven’t done so. They already have the resources, and such a system could be designed and implemented in a relatively short time-frame. Use of the website could even be cosmetically designed as the so-called “Bad Piggy Bank” concept that they announced last year.
There you have it, succinctly encapsulated. Any more detailed or pointed inquires are more properly put to Rovio directly, rather than anyone here at ABN. Truthfully, I’d like to see those modules available myself, for my PC versions.
Is there a law that Mighty Eagle must cost? Can Rovio not offer ME for free for PC users?
While it may be a nice gesture to offer the ME to PC users for free (I assume you mean the one-time unlimited purchase for $0.99), it does not solve the problem. Take, for example, the Space Eagle and Mighty Falcon. These are not one-time unlimited purchases, and some mobile users may have spent upwards of $20 on them. To then offer them to PC users for free would be a major slap to the largest and most profitable sector of Rovio’s business: iOS and Android.
I’ll just push a little on what @TruckDriver said, certainly not to contradict him in any way (since he’s more knowledgeable than I am in terms of this sort of stuff) but to stress what I think Rovio is looking at.
While I agree that Rovio could simply sell IAPs from their own website with codes and such, I think the primary issue would be usability. I believe TruckDriver is suggesting a one-time use code that you could enter (like the activation key) on the front Play screen of the app. While I agree that this is one solution, and it would at least introduce these IAPs to the app, I don’t think it is ideal, and I think Rovio believes similarly — otherwise we probably would have seen them by now.
I think what Rovio wants to do is associate these purchases to a particular account, especially “unlimited” purchases such as the Mighty Eagle in ABo/S/R. This way, if the user wipes their computer, or changes computers, or you-name-it, they can take this purchase with them. Perhaps the best comparison I can make is like one’s iTunes account: All your purchases are kept on your account, you can only authorize so many computers, but your material can be available on all of those computers.
I think that’s all I really wanted to stress. To me, at least, I think this is a reasonable explanation of the lack of Mighty Eagle in PC versions of the apps. It’s all speculative of course, but I’d like to think that after this much time in the field, I have a decent understanding of Rovio’s madness.
Thank you @AMslimfordy for your timely reply, but, I’d have no problem in paying for the ME though, when I used to play AB on Facebook I blew over $350.00 on Power-ups in 2 months and that’s one of my reasons for disliking Power-ups now, aside from others I’ve already mentioned in the Forum.
Again, thank you for taking the time to explain the intricacies of no ME on PC’s.
@AMslimfordy, I was thinking more along the lines of something like 3rd-party add-ons for Photoshop, or even browser plugins.
I don’t think usability is a serious issue in the PC’s case (although I could be wrong – it’s happened before!), since what I referred to was basically an outgrowth of the Plug ‘n’ Play concept developed for Windows 95.
The data collection method you refer to is actually a good idea for PC disaster recovery, but I think it can be easily accomplished in how Rovio would set up an online IAP store.
There may be other related side issues we don’t know about, but half the fun in speculation is trying to come up with a justification of one’s guesses.
OK, I think we’ve thoroughly beat this issue into the ground, so I’ll shut up now! :-)
When I use Samba Burst on bird other than red bird, It actually turns into red bird!
Yep. I don’t know why they couldn’t create new sprites to avoid the counter-productiveness AMslimfordy mentioned in the video.
Since the Samba Burst power up is counterproductive to the function of other birds, I believe that the sprite swap is a bit of a coding cheat. This accomplishes two specific goals:
1. It avoids any need for “function switching” of any specific bird, only to have to restore that function for the next bird in the sequence, or at the end of a level.
2. Keeps the app size down and cycle time low.
Since little red doesn’t have a tappable extra power, it’s the most logical choice, as the Samba Burst can then be accomplished by jumping to a subroutine, which can be reinitialized after the bird is used and the corpse sprite disappears from the screen. This means the coding for the Power Up only has to appear in one location in the program code. An added benefit is avoiding any programming conflicts or creating any bugs within the program that could lead to destabilization and crashing.
I’m being somewhat speculative, of course, but if I were programming this feature, that’s what I would do.
Anybody else having issues getting the new version on Google Play?
@bpfsox23 – I’m not showing an update available on Google Play either. I don’t see how some android users received the update but other didn’t.
I can’t download it from Google Play (HELP!)
@bpfsox23 and @ljose, as Alton Brown says, “Patience is a virture”. It may be that google is having server issues. (sorry, nothing to back this up with, just speculation). I have been checking every 15 minutes or so and still don’t see it for my google play account either.
And it’s only tuesday, not thursday like usual for new updates.
oops, my bad, that’s what my mom used to say. Alton says “You’re patience will be rewarded”
a Rio update finally.
I have been waiting for this update.
No distinction between scores? Rovio, you won’t see a single cent from me.
Sorry if this has been mentioned before; have to run so no time to read all posts.
1) Scores on bonus levels don’t seem to add to total score, increase total stars, or add to feathers. Am I missing something?
2) Bonus-7 TD — Really weird: missed shot and bounced can off one of the first inner tubes; bounced high in the air, and before I restarted ME swooped down and produced TD. Hope this isn’t how it’s supposed to be done.
Yes, strange. You can get 3 stars and a feather in the new levels, but these stars and feathers don’t count towards the total on the main screen. I hope this will be fixed.
I plan to ask Rovio if (1) was intentional or not. However, for now we will operate on the assumption that it was intentional.
I don’t see the update on Google Play yet. :/
I think there is something wrone with google play, tomorrow i downloaded the 1.5.0 version, and now the page shows 1.4.4. but still have the 1.5.0 running ;)
I dont see the update either. I have 2 Android phns that I need to update. Google Play still shows v 1.4.4.
2 possibilities:
1. there is something wrong with google play
or
2. there is a big fault or bug (what i didnt see yet) that they decided to go back to 1.4.4 for now..
Finally got the update! Time to earn those feathers! LOL ;)
One thing not mentioned above is that this update includes full iPhone 5 support.
Any Pink Bird sightings in Rio?
No, not that i know
@AMslimfordy By some of the TNT drops, they have a parachute! , dont know if you mentioned it, but only saying.
On outdoors levels they are dropped with a parachute.
On indoors levels, they randomly spawn.
what is the difference between indoor and outdoor levels?
My bad, it seems that a small parachute shows up when the tnt starts falling. Not linked to the type of level.
This is to stop it from immediately detonating.
Actually, the TNT is encased in metal. Once it is idle, the metal comes off, and that allows it to explode.
I had an level, and 2 TNT boxes came up, and one came down with a parachute
I used up my Power Ups playing around. Now I won’t have to worry about them anymore because I will never buy them – especially not for RIO.
Every day you get a free power Up ;)
IF I open the app.
I updated Rio on my iPhone, but when I go to the Rio game, there’s nothing new there. The episodes have new ‘doors’ (Smuggler’s Den, etc.), but I have three-starred all of them long ago, and I can’t find the purported “24 new levels”. I do have the special-power options, but don’t see the new levels, or any way to access them.
Go within one of the episodes.
They are embedded in each of the episodes — just open each of them to to see. Each has 4 new levels/games (6 times 4 = 24 new ones). If like me you 3 stared/feathered all a long time ago, all these levels will be active for you. Good luck.
THANKS! Nothing happened for me, so I just played Smuggler’s Den again, and after I racked up 30 stars, all of the new levels showed up. Appreciate the help, as always. This site is a sanity-saver!!!
For the benefit of those still trying to figure them out:
They are the beach balls at the bottom of each episode’s level select screen: Three Star levels plus the ME level. If you need stars or feathers to unlock them, the total you have/number you need are superimposed on the ball (same font as Bad Piggies Skulls find. :) )
Finally, been waiting for this ever since the last update said “more coming soon” I really only thought they would update the graphics for the iPad 3/4 and iPhone 5. But of course they couldn’t add just that after such a long wait. Surprised about these new bonus levels and power ups. By the way does anybody know out of all rovio’s iPad games that are not optimized for the Ipad 3/4 display?
I wish they could make it so the power-ups bar doesn’t open automatically. It’s very annoying. Also, I have an idea for distinguishing scores (in all games): When Power-Ups are turned off, that would show you your highscore obtained before using power-ups.
if we were given an option to turn off the power-up bar my biggest issue with it would be sorted :)
YAY Rio update!
BOO forced to see power-ups! :(
I found a secret: if you win a level and have a Samba Bird left, the “1000” sign show a normal Samba Bird.
@amslimfordy the 20 free PU that is given at first, are they 20 of each PU or 4×5 equals 20?
5 per.
New levels now available for AB Trilogy.
Specifically: Birdday Party and Seasons 2012.

Thanks for the info!
