The latest update to the Angry Birds Rio (v1.3.0) is now available for iOS, Ovi, Nook and Android via the Amazon AppStore and Android Marketplace. We hope that the PC and Mac receive the latest update soon as well. As we predicted this update takes place at the Rio airport and is aptly named, “Airfield Chase”. The leaderboard is up and running and if you’re stuck our 3 star and apple walkthrough videos are ready.
Note: We’ve received quite a few reports from iOS users who have said that after updating to v1.3.0 Rio crashes. If this happens to you try turning on Airplane Mode. If you’re on a first-gen device that doesn’t have Airplane Mode turn off wi-fi. This has worked for many users. You may have to play like this until a bug fix is released.
This update includes:
- 15 new levels in Chapter 9Â (links to walkthroughs)Â with Chapter 10 labeled, “Coming Soon”
- New hidden fruits in the form of Apples (seven hidden throughout Chapter 9)
- Two new achievements to be unlocked (iOS only)
- Big Brother is now unlocked and his bulbous frame looks very angry!
- Pro tip! Try to hit the luggage. It’s worth 5,000 points!
Bug fixes:
- The achievements bug has been fixed so any achievements you earned Carnival Upheaval should now register in Game Center. Mine registered the first time I launched the new update.
- The 17/15 watermelon bug that was introduced with the Golden Beachball episode has been fixed.

Nope. Restarted the iPad and it still crashes as soon as I try to start level one. Boo. Help?

Try the wi-fi/airplane mode solution proposed in the second paragraph above. That has worked for most people.

I turned WiFi off as suggested in a post below and it worked! Bloody weird!
After installing the Rio 1.3.0 update, I wasn’t able to get Rio to load AT ALL until I turned on Airplane Mode. With airplane mode on, I am able to open the game and even play the first level. As soon as I beat the level, (right when my score would show up) the app crashes back to home screen. have rebooted many times and tried online mode but that makes it worse.
I noticed in the app store it said (iOS 4 tested). Does that mean that those of us with older devices are soon going to be left in the dust and unsupported?

For most people it seems that Airplane Mode or disabling wi-fi stopped the crashing, even on older devices. You didn’t re-enable it by chance did you?
Nope I just repeated all my troubleshooting steps. With airplane mode off, I can’t open the app at all. With it on, I can open the game and load the first airfield level but just before I would get my score, it crashes to home screen. I even failed the level on purpose and it crashes right when the “level failed” dialog would come up.
I tried playing levels from earlier chapters which I thought gave me issues after the patch as well. I beat a few of em real quick without issue then just as I’m typing this I crashed twice during beach volley levels. This airfield chase update is causing real problems with Rio (at least on my device it seems).
Later tonight when I dont need my phone, I’ll do a restore back to Aug 12th (last backup before updating). I know the trick to get the restore to put back Rio 1.2.2 instead of leaving the updated version on after restore.
Other than that, I am very curious if I really am the only one that airplane mode isn’t helping. Anyone else have an original iPhone with the Rio 1.3.0 patch working?
OK I kinda feel like I’m spamming the boards here but I DO hope this info will be useful to someone else as well.
I was able to successfully go back to Rio 1.2.2 (the version prior to latest airfield update). The game runs fine with no crashes and my scores are all intact.
HOW I DID THIS: First of all, I would not have been able to go back to my working version of Rio 1.2.2 had I not just read your guide on transferring Angry Birds game data between devices a few days ago.
(Step 1)I deleted AB Rio from my iPhone. Went into my mobile apps folder in the iTunes library and found a backup copy of Angry Birds Rio 1.2.2 (iTunes automatically deletes old versions after syncing new ones so I always save the older copies). (Step 2)I just double clicked on ABRio122.IPA and it opened iTunes which then prompted me if I wanted to replace the newer version in my library (Updated 1.3.0 copy). I of course said yes to replace it. (Step 3) I then drag n dropped Rio back to my iPhone. I now had Rio working again but the game essentially was reset.
Thanks to AB Nest I was able to restore my highscores.lua and settings.lua files using iPhone explorer (Step 4) and after rebooting my iPhone, I now have all my progress back.
My next steps are to do a full backup and then see if I can update to 1.3.0 and have it work this time around
The Rio 1.3.0 Update now works without any issues. This is on the oldest of the old school original iPhone with iOS 3.1.3.
Your mileage may vary but how I fixed it (after backing up of course!) was to save my ABRio folder using iPhone Explorer (guide on AB Nest main page). I then uninstalled Rio from my phone completely and rebooted it. I re-installed older Rio 1.2.2 from my mobile apps folder. I then updated to 1.3.0 from app store, rebooted, and the new update is working fine. Last step was to copy over my settings and highscores.LUA files with iPhone explorer again.
Darn I cant get it yet as at&t wont let me sideload off of Amazon and its not on the market yet. I also wonder if it messes with that hidden level?
AND…an at&t htc aria 2.2 is supposed to work now. It says go to settings/applications and then turn off dowloading from unknown sources. Well that option doesnt show up on mine. I have an approved device with the proper updates but think at&t lies. My Android device is supposed to work with appstore according to them. Worse still Amazon waived the fee for the add free version.
I love my device but dont even know if will ever get an update or not because I have a stupid carrier.
Very happy it fixed my older achievements. VERY happy. A full achievement list is a large part of the desire to keep playing and finishing out those at times hair pulling points addict achievements.
Now if only they’d do the same with Angry Birds Original and/or give us a counter to see how many blocks the game thinks we’ve destroyed.
List of Golden Apples in Chapter 9 of Airfield Chase:
1. 9-1: The bush right behind the slingshot is labeled. Fire Big Brother lightly backwards to get the apple.
2. 9-2: The bush right in front of the slingshot is labeled. Use any bird to get the apple.
3. 9-5: The apple is under the slingshot platform, next to some red delicious apples and TNT crates. Fire Big Brother off of the incline below to have him roll back and hit the TNT. (You can also cause the first cart to roll backwards into the TNT, whichever you find easier.)
4. 9-6: The second crate in front of the slingshot is labeled. Use any of the birds to bust it.
5. 9-9: The oil drum in front of the slingshot is labeled. Have a little fun and have the White Bird drop an egg on the gasoline can next to the drum.
6. 9-11: The luggage towards the right of the level is labeled (under the tail of the wooden plane). Use the Yellow Bird to hit the gasoline can just to the right of the luggage, and you will get your apple.
7. 9-14: The bush on the backside of the hill on the far right is labeled. Use a high-arcing shot with the Yellow Bird to reach it. Note: You can go through the wooden “tree” on the right, if that makes it easier.

I don’t think so, I usually write down the levels were I find fruits. So that i don’t look for the missing ones on those levels.
Well, on your list, I would put a ” ? ” next to 9-2. Go through the rest of the levels on this list. When all is said and done, if you have seven apples, you’re golden. Otherwise, we may have a problem…
I truly hate the Amazon appstore. I feel like I have to do a magic rain dance to get the update to show up for me to download.

Wait never mind, I figured it out. You press the 3 horizontal bars (I have an HTC Incredible 2), or whatever your ‘more settings’ button is, and then click my apps. Then go to Update Available. Hopes that helps some confused people like myself :)
taht still doesn’t work for me. i’m about to dump the amazon app store and start Rio over thru the market. a week’s wait is worth the aggravation of not being able to figure out why the app store doesn’t work.
i find level 9-11 (the level with the plane) pretty offensive, (its facing a building!) even if it is coinsidence… :(
It’s facing the control tower. The episode is called Airfield Chase. Airplanes are expected. It is coincidental, but I don’t think it’s anything to get upset about. If anything, it’s good to remember.

Woah man, settle down. For one, the developers (Rovio) are Finnish, not only do they have nothing to do with the conflict, but the are so far out of the American VS Al-Qaeda picture it’s not funny, they have nothing to do with the conflicts. Also, the title of the new episode is called ‘Airfield Chase.’ It’s obviously going to have a plane in it somewhere. There is no TNT in the level either, also, there is only one tower. If Rovio wanted to say something about that terrible day, they would’ve put two towers in the level, plus TNT in the plane. There is none of that. So stop being so sensitive and enjoy the game.

Do you honestly think that Rovio would be so crass as to do something like that? It’s a control tower, like AMslimfordy noted. Also, it is vital that we remember such events.

Well, you might have to until they fix the bug. This affected a prior Seasons update too. Not sure what is going on, but I hope they fix it once and for all soon.
Tried it with airplane mode on & it still crashes. It also works with wireless turned off instead of on airplane mode.

First, reboot. Now turn on Airplane Mode — or if you don’t have Airplane Mode turn off wireless — then launch Rio again. See if that works.

I’ve not had any problems with this update. I’m using an iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3.3. Nothing going wrong with mine but I’ll be sure to post if it does.

I’m not sure, try switching Airplane Mode off now that it works and give it a shot. If it works, you don’t always have to play it in Airplane Mode. If not, you’ll be flying everytime you play AB Rio :)

Yes. I was trying to see if I could turn the phone back on during game play (turning off airplane mode) and it still crashes. Weird that there hasn’t been a fix released.

There are 50 total achievements, 48 of which are on our achievements page. Two new achievements are not yet attainable, so your goal is 48

Mac and PC are always a little bit delayed, due to large amounts of additional programming. Rovio is making an active effort to decrease this delay, so hopefully it will land within a couple weeks. We will create a post when it lands.

Amazon Appstore for Android has an exclusivity contract for the Rio app. The exclusivity period has typically lasted about one week.

Thank ypu sorry about getting upset. My phone is an att phonee thatt is supposed to allow sideloadin. Unfortunately I upgraded tp 2.2 before att pushed the firmware update. This means I will probably have do a hard reboot loosing my data. Im pretty angry wiith att for not allowing sideloading. Roviio removed the paid versions from the Market so I expect all will go to amazon.
Its been a week already. I dont think anything else will be on the Market from Rovio since it only affects some att Android that dont matter because Verison has that market and I have not seen a single thing on Rovios site that lets me know that it will be on the Market. I emailed them without response.
I don’t understand what your saying. The paid version of AB apps will not be on Android Market until the Bad Piggy Bank is completed. All updates will indeed land on Android Market because Amazon is only available in the US and there is no way Rovio cuts out this world market share.
Airfield Chase landed on iOS and Amazon on Friday. The exclusivity period usually has lasted one week. It has been 2 days (the weekend no less, when AppStores are not open). Please be patient. Rovio made it clear when launching Rio that there would be this exclusivity period. All other apps update on Market before on Amazon.
What I was saying is there no info except from you that Rovio intends to put anything else on the Market in a week or 20 years. Why should they? It only affects a tiny number of att Android users. Any else can go to Amazon.
There used to be paid add free versions on the Market that are gone now.

Ok you are right the upgrade came out the 17th which was WED.
Android Market is by no means a small percentage. So long as the Amazon AppStore is US-exclusive, Android Market will comprise of the majority of Android users. Not to mention that Rovio makes about the same amount of money on the ad-based game as they do on the ad-free.
I don’t recall Android having the paid version in quite some time. And I believe we are both off: The ABN post says Airfield was Thursday.
All updates will still be supported by Android Market until further notice. You won’t find anything on Rovio’s website about it because, well, it’s a given. Android Market is probably 75% of Rovio’s non-US market share. It would be foolish of them to throw that away. You also won’t see anything about continuing iOS coverage either.
Ok so it is given. Amazons AppStore is not worlwide yet. If you can sideload, Amazon says an app a day for free. So no adds and no cost. As everyone knows you can turn off the ads anyhow with an Android. I guess I will wait because I think my phone will sideload but I have to do a hard reset which will make me have to beat everything a third time.
Its easier to root your phone. Id pay not to have but cant. Dont get me wrong I like my Android but Apple looks better in many ways. Now at least that goes for att.

Some context for those who are not familiar with “sideloading”. Sideloading basically allows you to download applications for “Unknown Sources”, which is really just code for 3rd party app stores. In other words, when your device and carrier allows sideloading you can download apps from sources other than just approved marketplaces.

I have the update available through Amazon, but everytime it asks for $0.99 cents USD. If I originally received the Rio App through Amazon through a free Promo, and the Android Market updates my game for free, why does Amazon always want to charge? My version is Ad-Free which is the version Amazon wants to update on my phone. Will I be charged or will it wave the fee if I proceed with the update?
I usually wait for Android Market to update so I don’t get charged. I would like to play. Any suggestions? Does anyone have the same problem? Thanks in advance!
You probably confused the system by choosing (at some point after “purchasing” through Amazon) to update via Android Market. The system probably detects that you are running the Market app, and is asking you to purchase the Amazon app for $.99. If you are using the same phone and account that you initially used to “purchase” the app from Amazon, then re-download. If you get charged a second time, immediately contact Amazon about the duplicate charge.
That said, to avoid this happening in the future, you should only update your apps via the store where they are purchased from.
Thank you for your prompt reply. I did infact update one time through Android Market because I saw the charge on Amazon. When I went to Android market, the game said “Free”. Not “Installed”. It was for the Beach (Original, not Golden) update. So instead of risking getting charged, I installed the Android Market version. The update was clean and didn’t effect my progress. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t have chosen the Android Market if Amazon didn’t have the $0.99 cent charge to begin with. Thanks again. I should have come here first but hadn’t come across your site until recently. I may just wait a week for the Market to update to avoid any more confusion.
I only used Amazon to get Rio free during the promo. Don’t use it for anything else.

You also have the option of contacting Amazon in advance, asking why it is saying it will charge you. You should have your “receipt” and order number handy (I would imagine it was emailed to you, or logged in your account, even though it was a $0 purchase). Likewise, if your app is still ad-free, you’re kinda set already.
I have considered that option as well. I do have my receipt from back in March. Thank god for electronic storage! :P

After talking with Amazon, they claim that I won’t get charged but will probably have the permissions be reviewed by the app and then I can click install. I shouldn’t get charged because it is listed in the Update tab which means it is recognized as being purchased. Now my concern is all the problems people are posting about. Does anyone have a HTC 4G Evo (Not 3D) that has installed the update and can give some feedback? Or is everyone having problems? Just some worse than others.
I ask because if the problem is so bad I can’t play my game, waiting for Android to approve the update for the Market may be a better idea. :D

i have lost all my previous scores with the other fruits with this update. However I cannot go back and redo them as they are still done according to the level! Help! How do I get my hard work back?
If you have synced to iTunes recently, you can restore your most recent backup. Read more in this post.
