Andrew Stalbow of Rovio announced at Adobe MAX today that a Flash version of Angry Birds is in the works. Rovio has built a brand new Angry Birds engine on top of Flash Player 11 that will allow them to harness some really cool effects. As you will see in the video below there is just a lot more detail, including lighting, smoke, and “5x more particles in explosions and special effects”. The sounds effects are also much different. I don’t know about you, but this looks awesome. Oh, and lastly, I’m not sure if the Jack-o’-lantern’s in the video are hinting at something, but one can hope!
Some interesting tidbits from the presentation:
- 400,000,000 total downloads across all platforms
- People spend 300,000,000 minutes EVERY DAY playing Angry Birds games
- Focusing more on short-form animations as well as their movie.
- Rovio plans on bringing the “full game experience to Flash in the next few months”.
- 5x more particles in explosions and special effects
Ugh… Flash? That software is a hunk of junk.
Yeah, why not HTML5?
probably because flash has requirements that are a lot lower than javascript (what’s behind html5) my parents computer can barely play the html5 version of angry birds, but yet have no problem playing flash games. Also flash has a lot wider support than html5, no browser restrictions on computers and a decent number of mobile devices support it to.
Because HTML5 version already exists.
But i cant acess HTML5! How do i get to HTML5?
Most desktop browsers are HTML5 compatible now.
KOOOOOOOOL….
Now I am not the most technical person out there, but what are the implications for this new “AB Flash” platform for those of us who use iPad and the Apple OS as our gaming platform? The iPad/Apple OS doesn’t support Flash, right? So would this limit the access to this new version of AB to those of us using Apple?
I think this is more of a means of expanding, not weeding out. Apple is (one of, if not the) largest portion of Rovio’s community. I think Flash will allow the app to extend more smoothly to other platforms — such as BlackBerry’s Playbook. I don’t foresee Rovio cutting out Apple.
Apple doesn’t allow the use of flash on it’s devices, however, it does allow flash to be built in to apps. Hopefully iOS will get the benefits of this software too.
PC supports Flash also, right? I’m with drmac77, not all that much a tech person. I just downloaded v1.6.3 for PC this morning and I’m STILL waiting for Seasons for PC. Would be really cool if PC got an AB game first for a change, instead of waiting for 6 months after everyone else has it!! However it comes down, I’ll be waiting to click “Download that baby, now!”
LOOKS AWESOME!!! 2 bad i never use a computer
Speaking of jack-o-lanterns, I wonder what the chance is that Rovio does another Halloween release? I mean unless they start repeating holidays and seasons like Christmas and Halloween I’m not sure what they’ll do.Or they could do other countries holidays like Moon Festival…
Rovio has said they will do a mix of old and new, but I’m interested to see what comes next :)
The bird flies like a torpedo
300 million minutes a day? Wow. Wonder if that number has been inflated by us poor souls still trying to get the 1-16 feather… :-)
LOLS! great observation!
They should fix first the level 1-16 Christmas Greetings which is impossible!!!!
I almost got it !!! %99!!!!
It’s possible (we have video) but Rovio has said they will lower the threshold in the next update.
I think the next theme will be pirates
Maybe that might be a bonus episode when you purchase Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on DVD or Blu-ray XD
watch the flash player 11 demos, you will understand that html5 is crap, canvas is really really slow,i just saw how on flash i was able to get unreal3 like graphics on my pc and 100%, I even tryed another pc using integrated graphics, 8400gs to be exact, it was mindblowing to see tht it actually was smooth
The graphics are definitely impressive. Flash has a bit of a head start, so give HTML5 sometime to catch up and then we can really declare a winner.
Yes, it seems that HTML5 can be crap depending on the browser. AB Volcano runs great on Chrome, but runs like crap on IE9. And I have an ATI Radeon HD 6770 1 GB video card in my PC, which is well capable of running the Frostbite 2 graphics engine in games like Battlefield 3, so it seems as if the game is poorly optimized for IE9.
Do people really still use IE? ;)
I was reading this article on another site and this Angry Birds Flash version is expected to be release in a few months.
Can we have a link to this article? Hope I am not to late!
The HTML5 game gets slow for me, but only after the game has run for a while.
Then I have to exit out of the browser and restart to get rid of the stuff HTML5 leaves stacked up. I hope they get the HTML5 version running good for everyone. But until they do, I am hoping for a fast turn around for the Flash version. IT is much faster at this time.
I forgot to say, that is is faster and lasts longer in Firefox than the Iron version of Chrome. IT is just not playable in the chromium, browsers for me.
In fact, the Google Chrome version of Angry Birds gets slow and unresponsive in the chromium’s.
Besides, I just wish that Rovio would start getting the rest of RIO ( and the Seasons version) implemented for the PC and stop the development of all of these freaking ‘side track’ projects for a while.
I understand the frustration, but Rio is running on-time and should likely be out for Mac/PC in a week or two. Seasons should be out soon too, though I haven’t heard much on the matter recently besides the accidental release.
You mean we cant get Airfield chase on PC and Mac?:(
That’s not what that says… It’s just not out yet.
What is up with the new level thing in the demo? Has anybody else noticed this? It looks like pirates?
hey i heard a rumor that in the angry birds movie, king pig is red bird’s father! is this a possible hint to angry birds star wars?
hey slim how much longer until they release the Angry Birds Flash version?
Things may have changed a bit. Since this was announced Adobe killed Flash on mobile, which ultimately means Flash will become an afterthought. I’m not saying it won’t come out, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
It’s not out yet?
We believe the whole thing was scrapped and replaced with AB:Facebook.
