It is a personal decision. I only recently made the choice to move up to a level 4 hatchling and end up 10-15 apples short every 48 hours. This essentially forces me to consider 1400 apples for $99.99 as a resource to sustain the hatchling . But such is the price to pay for power. Our clan has members at level 5 and 6 and beyond. You do not necessarily have to have a Facebook account to sync across multiple devices. Resource data appears to be, at least in part, handled by Rovio directly. Save your current progress via the cloud save icon before restarting AB2 across all of your devices. Resources should be synchronized properly at that point.

No doubt the removal of continuation is an idea being tested in the wild by Rovio. I gather they will examine the expenditure of gems for these types of events versus the norm and make a decision on how to proceed in the future once a reasonable data set can be established.
