Mancala Parakin@mancala-parakinPigsyland and the new, also festive-themed Pig City pack, Porkland (from “Portland,” no doubt), are both called Свинляндия (from Финляндия “Finland”) in Russian. If you speak a language besides English, do newer chapters reuse names of earlier packs? I found it rather odd that the Russian AB2 would. Свининск (from свинина “pork”) would’ve sounded better for Porkland…but it is what it is.

CaptSternn@captsternnOuch. Completely not relevant to your comment, but I once knew a guy in the military that accepted a job as a translator. He was learning Russian, not only to speak it but also to read and write in Russian. He showed me one of his books. It was painful just to look at it. I was tested for linguistics and offered that job while I was in the military. When I saw what he was doing I was very happy that I didn’t try to take that on.
German, Spanish, maybe French if I had applied myself, but Russian was way, way over my head. I would never have had the patience nor discipline to conquer it. I am guessing the reverse would be at least as difficult, a person that is raised on Russian would have to be very intelligent and disciplined to learn English.
Side note, I was taking German in high school, but my dad figured it was a waste because I would never have need to speak German. I ended up being stationed in Germany. I knew some from my classes, but my Texas accent was so thick and my German so limited that when I tried using it the Germans asked me to just speak English. They probably thought I was trying to murder their language and torture their ears. :)
kelshe@kelsheSehr gut Herr Kapitan.
CaptSternn@captsternnIch verstehe dass, Kelshe. Danke.
We would also say, “Was ist los?” and “Nicht on the pommes frittes”.
That last one had nothing to do with french fries, just FYI. I won’t go to much into the details, but let us just say that there was some really good quality tetrahydrocannabinol substances in Germany. And when we couldn’t score, …
Ah, fond memories. I do hope to visit Germany again some day. But as a civilian.
Oh, what is the deal with mayonnaise on the fries? Never managed that one.
kelshe@kelsheMy wife puts mayonnaise on fries and she’s as southern as they get. She did live in Germany for 3 years, though. I don’t use catsup but do love my senf. We try to go to Germany/Austria yearly but didn’t make it this year. My German isn’t fluent but passable. They, Germans, tell me that my accent is Swabian, not southern. Those substances are available many places in the world like southeast Asia and south Florida. Or so I’ve heard. Auf Wiedersehen. Bis spater.
CaptSternn@captsternnTschüss, Kelshe. And those substances … well, had to drop that indulgence a few years ago because of my current job.
But I did love Germany. My first post was the same as Elvis. Small town, loved looking up at the local church. Just like the old Dracula movies. The skies. The clouds. Nothing like Texas. Old buildings, office spaces older than my state and nation. And other stuff. Second post, large city. Completely different. But stilled loved it. But nothing like home.
Chucky@chucky-2really good quality tetrahydrocannabinol substances in Germany
For some reason I feel the need to go to Germany, I just can’t put my
coneFinger on the reason why… :P
CaptSternn@captsternnI remember going through Sachsenhausen to get to … that place where I could score tetrahydrocannabinol substances, Chucky.
This is supposed to be a kid friendly place. I think that is … tmi. But fun to know and exchange information and memories. Get those pigs and save the eggs
