I remember watching this live in 1970. We didn’t have a TV set then so ended up watching it at the local National Children’s Home. Why we had to go to a nearby orphanage to watch the World Cup Final is a complicated story. It would have been like for most people at that time, in black and white.

This was the pinnacle of Brazil’s brilliance. It has been argued that the whole of football has gone downhill since then, it terms of corporate greed and cynical cheating players.  Maybe, maybe not. But has there ever been a better team than this?  Everyone was expecting England to be their opponents but of course Gordon Banks drank that “bad beer”before the quarter-finals…  The Italians were totally cooked by the time this goal was scored but even so, it is worthy of poetry IMO.
