Rovio has been revealing Angry Birds Star Wars gameplay through a series of short videos that start out with a fun animation that gives you an up close look at the new characters. They’re careful not to reveal too much too soon, but we can definitely extract a few interesting nuggets:
- As expected, the Red bird (aka, Angry Luke) carries a light saber and can use it to cut through blocks.
- Leia is the Pink bird and her power is a tractor beam. As shown in the video she uses it to pull down an AT-AT Walker. That is one strong tractor beam!
- The pigs on Tatooine will be dressed like the wretched Tusken Raiders (aka, “Sand People”).
- Some of levels will fight back! Notice how the AT-AT Walker shoots laser beams. These are sure to get in the way!
- As we posted about last week, the button that usually spawns the Mighty Eagle has been replaced by what looks to be a Millennium Falcon icon. Will we be able to summon a Mighty Millennium Falcon?
- Per the animation, Angry Luke is trying to impress Leia with his light saber skillz. Obviously, the poor bird doesn’t yet know Leia is his sister.
Since we like to toot our own horns, we were the first site to uncover a glimpse of the gameplay, which we posted about here. Again, amazing super sleuthing by the ABN community!
R2-D2 and C-3PO Gameplay
Rovio’s second gameplay teaser features the beloved robotic duo of R2-D2 and C-3PO. Again, Rovio is releasing as little information as possible, but enough for us to wet our whistles.
- R2-D2 is being played by the infamous Egg. His (its?) ability seems to be an electric zapping that targets nearby pigs and dislodges structures in its proximity.
- C-3PO is a golden version of the White bird. The ability here is an explosion that sends metallic debris around the entire level. This will be exceptionally useful in levels with scattered TNT blocks, like the one shown in the video.
- There will be physics just like in Angry Birds Space, featuring zero-gravity and circular gravitational fields.
- Tie Fighters don’t just have pig-like bodies because it’s clever. They are worth 5,000 points! We are guessing that you will be required to break them in order to pass the level.
Han Solo and Chewie Gameplay
In this third Angry Birds Star Wars trailer we’re introduced to best friends Han Solo and his hairy sidekick, Chewbacca (who looks absolutely awesome!). A few more nuggets have been revealed:
- The Yellow Bird takes on the roll of the dashing Han Solo. However, instead of a speed burst, Han’s power-up is his trusty blaster, which fires laser beams.
- Terence (aka, Big Brother) makes for an awesomely awesome Chewbacca. He’s big, hairy and won’t put up with any mischief. His power-up is the same = pure brute force!
- This video gives us the first glimpse of the bomb bird, but we don’t see exactly what he does.
Obi Wan & Darth Vader Gameplay
The fourth Angry Birds Star Wars trailer features the Jedi Master: Obi Wan and his old apprentice Darth Vader. Rovio is very careful not to reveal too much too soon, but we can definitely extract a few interesting nuggets:
- The force is with Obi Wan Kenobi, the Bomb Bird. Instead of the usual bomb explosion, he uses the Force to push objects away.
- Darth Vader, the master “King Pig”, won’t sit around doing nothing. He uses the Dark Side of the Force to place blocks and objects on the birds path. Notice the red glow.
- This video also gives us a glimpse of the Blue Birds, but we don’t see exactly what they do.

looks like the Millennium Falcon will be the Mighty Eagle!
Looks like the Millennium Falcon will not be unlimited
There’s a number on the millennium falcon icon. It’s 14. So it’s not unlimited. Anyway, the gameplay screen are huge, I wonder what device they’re using
It’s probably a Mac.
I guess the Millenium Falcon payment system maybe like Angry Birds Space
That, we do not know.
We are not very sure as to how it is going to play either.
reb bird(luke) finally gets a power!! can’t wait much longer!!
Per the animation, Angry Luke is trying to impress Leia with his light saber skillz. Obviously, the poor bird doesn’t yet know Leia is his sister.
Yes, but it looked like he tried to slash her…what’s up with that?
Awesome, even more excited now
Leia power seems similar to her bubble, aim the laser & AT-AT leg lifted.
It seems quite a bit more destructive though.
I really like the pigs on Tatooine.
I noticed that the button that will be the MMF (Mighty Millenium Falcon) has a counter attached to it, so I expect it to be priced and sold like the Space Eagle in AB:Space. How it works within the game remains to be seen, but I’d like to see it before I purchase it.
I think it will be introduced just like SE in ABS. Probably players will get 3 or 10 free MMF for getting three stars on each level and have to buy packages for more. It would be cool to get free one daily. Finally I hope it would be only one IAP in this game and there wouldn’t be any super powers, super waepons and whatever of that sort.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Did they NOT learn anything from the Space Eagle fiasco?
@Heathen, are you sure that Space Eagle was fiasco for Rovio? Although I prefer unlimited use for ME, I did purchase SE packages and make sure to open game each day to get free one daily.
I would consider fan backlash (in the form of forum postings here, and tons of negative feedbacks in iTunes that far outstrip the normal out of negatives that they have, although some of the original because the game kept crashing), calls for boycots of all angry birds merchandise (I personally haven’t bought any t-shirts or items since as a result), attempts to pacify users with a “bonus” amount on an update plus a free daily, and having to issue a company-wide marketing non-answer statement that really doesn’t address customer’s complaints to the issue as backlash.
Zynga is already feeling the financial pinch of attempting to attach a permanent vacuum to everyone’s wallet. Over time, people are going to backlash by opting not to even buy into their games.
I think iTunes bears this out quite nicely. As of right now, Angry Birds Space is ranked number 11 of top paid games. Angry Birds Seasons is ranked number 13, just two spots behind it. However, Seasons has been out MUCH longer than Angry Birds Space and is still selling within earshot of Angry Birds Space, whereas Angry Birds Space should basically be riding on the coat tails of those preceding it and thus have a larger potential and captivated audience. I think this shows that some of those captivated ones were turned off into un-captivated ones and opted not to purchase Space after reading things such as Internet postings and feedback.
Perhaps. I say that as I don’t know for certain about the specifics of any possible backlash. The collaboration between Rovio and LucasFilm is definitely an indicator that any such backlash, if it exists, will be delayed, or at least deferred with the upcoming new game release. The sheer number of Angry Birds and Star Wars fans worldwide will make, in my opinion will lengthen any such deferral, but we’ll see.
Obviously, you are still rankled by the Space Eagle pricing and use scenario. I can say for myself, that I’m not so put out about it yet. But then, I’ve been concentrating on getting caught up, so to speak, with the other three AB versions, after having switched devices, so I’m only now getting into AB:space. Will my opinion change over time? Again, perhaps. But I did use an IAP to purchase a 100 Space Eagles soon after installing Space to my iPad, so if I were to make a prediction about my feelings towards the SE, I’d have to say, in all honesty, probably not.
I don’t put as much stock into internet postings about the issue, as most are from hardcore fans, and not the general public at large, who in having other more pressing concerns, and a diminished emotive attachment to the game, are more likely to question what the brouhaha is all about.
Just my $0.02.
You are correct in that I am still rankled by the Space Eagle pricing (as well as the Power Ups). I think that it does a great disservice to the users and insults their intelligence to boot. While I agree that most postings are from hardcore users of fan sites, there still is the impact of feedback. I know that I have read feedback on certain games and it has affected my decision to purchase or not. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a bird flinger at heart and will play the mobile app games quite often. I haven’t bought any Space Eagles or Power Ups, and as my way of “boycotting” I also refuse ancillary merchandise as well. That way, they get money from me for development of the game, but nothing in the areas that I feel destroy the integrity of the game.
It might take a while, but eventually people will be turned off by such constant nickel & diming to enjoy game play. If you don’t believe me, just ask Zynga.
That is, of course, your choice to boycott Rovio over the SE issue, but in the end, perhaps it is better to consider the effectiveness of such a course, rather than seething privately. Of the 60 boycotts over the past 20 years less than half have been successful, and then, only because they put a stop to evils such as the slaughter of inoffensive creatures to no purpose, averted widespread environmental disaster, or put a stop to a gross injustice.
As to Zynga, while they may have been stung, they are still around and doing business, so even that boycott, in the end, can only be considered as a failure. The weakness of a boycott over such issues as the SE, is that they generally fizzle out primarily because life goes on, and there are other concerns.
Like I said, it’s your choice to be angry, but in closing I ask you to consider whether or not it’s worth the expenditure of energy.
Just sayin’…
Two firsts:
1) The red bird has special abilities.
2) The pigs can fight back.
By the look of this, the game is going to be amazing!!!! I cant wait for it to be released!!!
This is going to be awesome, can’t wait for it to come out.Red bid finally has a power.10 day left.
I think, Darth Vader could be blue bird, casue DV is Luke Skywalker father, and in first 3 parts, who would be Anakin?
The Blues are Hoth Rebels.
One of the pigs in the video has on a Darth Vader helmet on. I doubt one of the birds will be a bad guy.
That’s an AT-AT Commander helmet.
Judging by the looks of the gameplay, this may catapault Rovio to another record and a lot more sucess. It’s even more awesome than I imagined. Good work as always Rovio!!
Whoa this look awesome very different than ABS I love it can’t wait 2 get it I luv Princess Leia as link bird lol
I really thought Rovio maybe using the ABS engine for this game. Im so excited for this game. I wonder what the hidden item will be? It would be cool if it was those little tiny four wheel droids. Nov 8th can’t come fast enough for me.
Yessss only 11 days left :-)
Love Red’s ability with the lightsaber! Do you think that Bomb will have this power as well (since he’s a Jedi master)?
I’ll doubt it. He’ll explode, just like in the other apps.
Sad they recycled most of the Angry Birds Space mechanics…
But finally Red has his own special move!
Very cool Video. Also nice to see Pink Birdie in Star Wars :-)
Thanks for the clip – I’ve always liked the Cantina music. Game play looks awesome.
Same here. I wonder what the music will be like in the game!
I’m guessing Rovio’s going to do more trailer videos like how they did with ABSp, can’t wait! :D
Yes hopefully we See more soon :-)
Have you noticed the piggies during the Hoth scene? They act like they did in Angry Birds Space, complete with scared faces when in danger.
I see that they’ll do this for major future games.
The gameplay looks awesome, but there are four Lukes and three Leias in the same level! I mean, it doesn’t make much sense.
I think they go back to the slingshot after they disappear.
but then the gameplay would go on forever and there would be no challenge
@amslimfordy I can’t watch the video. I really want to. Is there any place i can download it? Can u try to make it downloadable to me? By any link
Watch it through youtube (if you’re on mobile, watch it through YouTube app)
@theog YouTube is blocked in my country since 17th september
I pity you.
It’s not our video, so no we can’t. We pretty much exclusively use YouTube. Unfortunately, there’s nothing we can do.
Well, there’s a website that can download videos from YouTube, but I forgot about that (note, you need java to download it). On android, there are many YouTube video downloader
We aren’t going to scrape Rovio’s video, if that’s what you are suggesting.
Sorry if my suggestion was forbidden, I don’t know about that
@amslimfordy no! I didnt mean scraping. I meant what helped me get that vid. All i wanted is a way to download youtube vid without going there. I thought, you many people here would be able to help me. That’s why i asked
@amslimfordy Calm down guys!! I already watched and downloaded them. I found solution. And @lolwutburger There is nothing to be pity about. Its blocked and nothing can undo it unless youtube remove the conflicting video.
I’m quite calm. Though you have complained about not being able to view YouTube several times now, and we have said that we can’t do anything about it.
Yup i know. It’s unbelievably awkward living without youtube u know.
Even more better graphic features.
Anti gravity laser beams. AWESOME!
The AT-AT has a pig snout and eyes. Honestly, I think Rovio is changing stuff too much. Seriously, the rebel symbol for the MMF has a slingshot at the top. I still can’t wait though!
Of course they have to change things, to keep in touch with the birds and pigs theme.
Aha! By the help of proxy, i was able to download and watch it. I’m really eager to play it
I’m pretty sure the only character bird they haven’t revealed is the orange bird. Yet at the same time, they haven’t revealed Yoda yet. Could the orange bird be Yoda? (Makes sense, its small size would.)
What about the green bird? (Although I’m certain that Rovio won’t put him in anyways.)
Why not?
They haven’t put him in AB Space or most of the comics or animations. Seems like Rovio is trying not to include the green bird much. :(
ab star wars is coming out on my b-day!!!!!
I agree with you on the fact the the orange bird would be Yoda though.
not sure ifthis has been reported, but on ABSp near red panet, the pigs star is floating able to click on it
Where?!
looks like it’s only on the W8 version
Do you have a picture of it?
i don’t ATM, but i will as soon as possible
Nice video ABN!! This game looks way cool…can’t hardly wait!! The graphics look really great as well. It’s gonna be awesome!
So, since Lucasfilm is selling to Disney, this means that Rovio is now technically in partnership with Disney.. The prospects of that are staggering..
And, since it looks like we will have Star Wars 7 in 2015 now, it looks like there is plenty of material to keep the AB Star Wars app running for a long time..
I don’t know why, but I’m not sure that Rovio and Disney partnering together is a good thing. Disney likes to take over projects, and I don’t know if Rovio would like that too much.
Agreed! I made a similar comment a few weeks ago that was pointed out to be false. I guess my ESP was kicking into overdrive! LOL!
I wonder how involved (if at all) Disney was in the development of the game. Pretty safe to say that the negotiations must have been going on simultaneously since none of this happened overnight.
Oooh, interesting topic – I’m glad you started it Dr. Omega. I was thinking the same thing @burbman. (Re negotiations going on simultaneously…) I agree, you’d think Rovio would have known there was a sale pending – especially if there’s to be further levels/updates for the AB Star Wars games. I’ve no idea how these things are worked out but I bet it’s complicated. I’m guessing Lucas would have negotiated to receive a percentage of profits from the AB game but that revenue will now go to Disney. I know “business is business” but this must have irked Rovio considering they want to be bigger than Disney.
Re whether Disney was involved in the development of the game, I doubt that and think that all of the development would have been done by Rovio alone with Lucas only approving the end product. Let’s hope Disney doesn’t want of meddle with the AB games. We could be waiting a long time for updates if they do. I’m still waiting for the rest of the Muppets DVDs to be released – it’s taking them far too long to release the remaining episodes.
Are we guessing if Disney has made an offer to buy Rovio – that’s of course if they have any money left? It must be nice to have 4.05 billion dollars to spend!
This could be a great development for the game, but, if the NY Times is correct, and they start cranking out Stars Wars films on a 2-3 year assembly line, the movie franchise will probably suffer, which would be a bad thing. Hopefully, it doesn’t devolve into a situation where Disney kills the goose laying the Golden Eggs, (pun intended), but we’ll have to see.
The video above looks great. Excited about the game coming out and to view the ABs adaptation of the SWs characters and major aspects in each SW release. This new game should be interesting and fun.
