This just in! The NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles have signed several unlikely — and very angry — players: Rovio’s Angry Birds. Out of this we should expect a brand new, hard-hitting, Philadelphia Eagles branded Angry Birds game, merchandise, and a collaborative marketing push this Fall. In some ways the new partnership sounds similar to what we saw when Rovio and Fox partnered up to bring us Angry Birds Rio.
It also sounds like there will be a new character — or possibly a spin on an existing one — “The Mighty Philadelphia Eagle”. Details are sparse at the moment, but Andy Reid, Head Coach of the Eagle’s says in the video that, “The fifth bird is our secret weapon. The Mighty Philadelphia Eagle has been putting in a lot of hard work this off season, but wasn’t quite ready to make his debut.” I guess we will just have to wait and see.
The The Wall Street Journal is reporting that this partnership, “will include everything from social media initiatives to integration on local team television shows and even in-stadium displays.” For example, “according to the team, if defensive lineman Trent Cole sacks New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, the stadium’s video board will dump the traditional sack animation for a new one–an animation in which Angry Birds character “Big Brother Bird” Terence knocks Manning over.”
That’s it for now. As always, we will keep this post updated as more information becomes available.
Looks like it will be an interesting fall!!! :)
Not really an Eagles fan, but this should be fun!
Cool! Look intresting! Is this a new app or a web game?
Read the post above: merchandise, collaborative marketing, and new animation when the Philadelphia Eagles are for example, sacking Eli Manning.
@mariokart.cruz, it says: Out of this we should expect a brand new, hard-hitting, Philadelphia Eagles branded Angry Birds GAME, merchandise, and a collaborative marketing push this Fall.
Is this game a new app or a web game?
I’m terribly sorry. I forgot to read the title of the post. At the moment, we don’t know if it’s a new app or a web game. Only time will tell.
All odds are that it will be web based.
Announced so far in advance? I wouldn’t put all my eggs in the web basket.
I just think that the web will allow them to reach the most Philly (and NFL) fans.
Alternatively, it could be a way of selling more mobile apps.
My personal opinion (and it’s just that) is that they are focusing on web. It seems to be where all the activity is. Note all the slow updates to the mobile games.
Again, just my opinion.
As a few Rovio employees have said, mobile and web apps are completely separate wings. Let’s also say that it is far easier to release a web app (only needs to care about running in Flash) than mobile (which needs to run on iPhones, iPads, countless Android devices, a barrage of different PC configurations, and Mac).
There’s no question putting out new games on the web is easier. I’m sure you’re right and it’s much more time consuming to develop and QA the other apps across so many platforms.
Maybe it’s just that so many new web based AB games have come out recently, while only Space has been updated on the non web side.
Let’s hope Piglantis comes out soon to keep mobile interesting! :-)
In the The Wall Street Journal article, it mentions two other things, one of which I already aware about (Amazing Alex). The second is a new Angry Birds weekly animated series due out this fall. I can’t wait for this!
i read about the TV series…out this fall!
TV Show?! Cannot wait! :D
here is some info on it
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/appsblog/2012/apr/01/rovio-angry-birds-animated-series
From what I understand, it will be a 5 minute short once a week.
What did you hear, and where did you hear it? If Rovio hasn’t announced it, it’s speculation.
PocketGamer has an article about it, as do several others.
what channel is it on?
Not sure… Perhaps their On-Demand Channel?
so you have to have samsung?
I didn’t say anything definitive. My first three words were “Not sure… Perhaps”
I don’t think they would bring it there, but my guess is Nick, since they already released two 2-minute shorts there.
yes, or cartoon network
Cool, it would be really awsome if other teams were involved one way or another
It wouldbe cool, there are several bird based team names in the league (Falcons, Cardinals, Seahawks, Ravens, etc). I doubt it would happen though, the marketing appears to be Eagles specific rather than league wide.
Does not have to be bird specific, the pigs can wear hats or helmets of any team. But I guess Rovio just signed on with the Eagles and not the NFL so probably wont happen.
AWESOME! I love the way the birds talk, and this sounds like a pretty cool game! Can’t wait!
I hope they keep this kind of speech in the TV shorts. They have so far on the animated Webisodes.
Never liked how they talk in full sentences, etc. in the comic strips.
So is it a new app? I sure do hope it is!!!
This deal may have taken a while to finalize, but the Eagles had the competition beat, IMO. A perfect partnership. Hope it is not web-based! Please, please, please…
iTA, @mvlna2. While I love the wide variety of games, I strongly prefer mobile apps.
For me, computer = work. I don’t like going to my PC for entertainment!
That’s twice in two days that I screwed up your name @mvnla2. Sorry about that. Darn autocorrect screws me up!
As a Philadelphia resident, I am confident that the signing of these birds will dramatically improve the performance of the Eagles, who haven’t been too mighty recently.
How Cool is this!!! I sure do hope it’s a new app…I don’t play on my PC, which is why I don’t play the Facebook levels. Thanks @birdleader for the great info and keeping us up to date as usual. You Rock ;-)
New game this fall!!!I’mmmm Reeeeadddddy!!!!
The 5th bird has to be the Mighty Philly Eagle since it showed the football being flung instead of the sardine can.
for some reason i dont think the might philly eagle is the 5th bird
The 5th bird acted like ME, and I think the idea of a football rather than a sardine can is right on.
cool, but i’m still not 100% sure what it really is
Looks like a start for sport association in US. See if basketball, baseball, hockey, etc., join in on the popularity of the AB games. Have to hand it to the Rovio marketing and management for cutting through all sectors of business for partnerships that assist in sharing developmental expenses. WTG!!!
Exactly @wrw01! I believe the integration of Angry Birds into American Football will solidify the Angry Birds franchise as a force to be reckoned with. I don’t follow football, personally. But if Rovio can make this a solid, football based app, I believe the possibilities for partnerships with other sports are endless. Maybe a little harder to tie in, but still. Imagine if the Eagles make it to the Super Bowl? Kudos to Rovio and the obvious choice for your new teammates!
I hate the eagles but I love Angry Birds. And the Mighty Philadelphia Eagle?!
its clever, very clever, but i also dont like the philly eagles
Any new game is a good game for an AB fanatic! Yay!
I am not a fan of philedelphia eagles, but i am giving it a try
It looks interesting.
Not a football fan, but have to admit, this will get me to pay attention.
But the original backstory of the Birds has them on an island in the Pacific.. so not sure how they are participating in the East Coast division..
If this is going to be an entirely new game, and if it is directed at NFL fans, it will be interesting to see how Rovio grabs the vast majority of potential players who they may have antagonized by picking a specific team, in this case the Philadelphia Eagles.
Never been really into football or the Eagles, but this seems like a good way to tie in with the NFL. If only we could see the Pigs as the Redskins.
Also, I found my new avatar!
PLEASE let this be an actual app for platforms and not a web based game!
I believe that the Mighty Philadelphia Eagle will be summoned with a football, as shown near the end of the video. This will probably be added to a new mini-game, and will be added to the list of the Mighties! (Again, this is what I think.)
Slim, do you think that this will be a new app or another web-based game?
My guess is that it will be a separate app, but that’s only a guess. I think the collaboration is big enough and early enough to justify a full-fledged app. But still, just my guess.
I also noticed that they release future updates or new games longer now. For ABS they told everyone about it two months before the game released. Now for this, they told everyone in June, but will probably be released somewhere during Fall seasons.
I bet it is a separate app and I bet they start cranking the teasers in August which is when the NFL preseason games get started, with a release date in early September to coincide with the official start to the season.
Hope its a new app, I don’t watch football anyways so it wont bother me
Didn’t know there was a team called Philadelphia Eagles ’till today; so I plan to enjoy the game without any pre-existing prejudice.
Awe, I’m a Dolphins fan!
Meh… I’m not a fan of the Eagles.
I’m so hoping this will not be a web game. If it’s an app, I’m not gonna hesitate in getting it. They should’ve made all web based Angry Birds games into apps.
Please if anyone from Rovio reads this take our advice and make it a seperate app! :) all the other web based games in one app would be amazing too! I hate playing on PC! They would make plenty of money off me! 8)
Looking forward to it :)
