Looks like Rovio is extending it’s partnership with Fox by offering up a bonus to those who are willing to go out and buy Rio on DVD or Blu-ray. There will be codes included in the DVD and Blu-ray releases that will allow users to download 15 new Angry Birds Rio levels. Details are vague at this point, but from what we understand these codes will work on all devices that currently run Angry Birds Rio. No word on if the same code will work on more than one device (say you own an iPhone and an iPad); however, they have stated that the codes will be the only way to access exclusive levels.
Updates:
- Rio is now out on DVD and Blu-ray and we’ve got instructions on how to access the new episode called the, Golden Beachball.
- We’ve got a sneak peek (videos) of two of the levels.
Great! However here in the UK we have to wait until November 14th for the DVD…sucks!
Bummer. Is there still such a thing as region encoding? I assume that is why you can’t order the US version on Amazon.
Actually, you can change the region, but no more than four times and after the fourth, it gets locked and can never get changed (to prevent cheating). On a computer, you can go to Device manager and click on the DVD drive. That’s where you can change the region
Yep, even on Blu-Ray. However, many movie studios no longer utilize it, preferring to release their movies region-free. Unfortunately, 20th Century Fox is one of the studios that does continue to use region-encoding. (Source: Wikipedia)
Intervideo-Win on computer lets you play any DVD from any region on your computer unlimited times.
I guess the real question is: Is that promotion worldwide or just US?? If its worldwide its ok, I dont mind waiting some time, but if its only US, well, that sucks.
My guess is it will be worldwide.
I hope so. And I think it would be a bad move for Rovio doing it only for US as long as Angry Birds has become a worldwide success. Anyway, I was buying the movie before knowing that, now I have one more reason to buy it :).
PS Off-Topic: Great work with that site. Congrats!!!
In new Zealand rio will be out on DVD looking at 15 of dec. :)
Look on the bright side, you get to live in New Zealand.
i know right!!!!
hello my ne is Elijah
When they say Angry Birds Rio will have 15 new levels, does that means it works on computers too? And where would the codes for devices be at after you found the codes from Rio DVD or Blu-Ray? Anyone? Please reply.
I hope that it won’t have registration issues again.
I think if anyone buy DVD or Blu-Ray Disc he or she give us password :)
Ha, we won’t allow passwords / codes to be shared here. Also, I’m sure Rovio and Fox know better and will limit the number of times individual codes can be used.
As long as I can use it at least twice. I have AB and AB:R on my Android and PC, so, yeah…
I hope I can save up the money to buy it. Just got an iPhone yesssssss!
Are the new levels going to be part of Carnival Upheaval or will they be in a special part of the existing AB Rio app? Maybe a separate app altogether. How will you enter the codes on IPhone? Just wondering. Should be fun however it’s done. The new Rio update should be out soon as well, no?
Yeah, the new update should be out relatively soon I imagine. Not sure how the new levels will be included.
Well, as long as when there’s a new update of any Angry Birds game they include a new feature, they probably add an special section in AB:R where you could introduce the code or something :)
So if the codes work more than once, I could just Netflix it, right?
Sure, if you don’t want the exclusive levels.
Im on my Evo and I got Rio as a free download from the Amazon store. Its the full version but was given out for free for that day. How would I enter the code??
If codes can be used multiple times, will you upload them here for everyone to use?
I doubt codes would be availabe to be used more than once, but if they were I don’t think we’d post them on ABN. After all, we do want Rovio keep the levels coming!
Exactly, we don’t condone cheating or piracy, so we definitely won’t allow it here.
I dont know if i want to pay $20 for more levels…
I hear ya. Good thing is, you don’t have to.
Of course, you would also be getting the movie along with any dvd extras they include, along with the unlock code, so only a complete cheapskate could call it a ripoff…
yeah but i know if i want the movie lol
No sign about the DVD\Blu-ray in Israel.. Boohoo!!!
I want extra levels so much!!!!!
P.S. From where do you know That the DVD\Blu-ray will come with the code (can you give me the link of your source)?
Here is the link to the site of USA Today which published the information about the DVD/Blu ray + codes.

Have any of you guys seen this?
Yeah, pretty cool.
are the 15 levels available on android??
Will be, I assume
@Bird Leader. Is the codes on a special paper or something like that
I’m honestly not sure how the codes will be included.
These comments show just how worldwide this site is! Bird Leader/FujiToast – have you ever considered doing something where we could get a sense of who else is on the site? Location/age/sex/what brought us to the site in the first place are just some of the things you could survey. Not only would it be interesting to us, it might be useful for your advertisers. Just a thought…
Yeah, great idea. I’d love to build out the profiles a bit more or hook in Facebook. Thanks for the comment and suggestion.
So the real quiestion… Will these 15 levels be their own app? Will they be an addon to the Rio app?
And most importantly of all… Will we have new achievements to hunt down?
I like my achievement list being 100% (except for Angry Birds normal which has crappy achievement detection and robs me of 2 achievements, one of which I’ve surely earned and the other which I’d wager I’ve earned).
Fact is, my holiday and rio achievement list are as perfect as they can be right now… If they get new achievements I may be forced to buy the dvd and then return it for store credit or something.
Yes, that’s evil, no, I’m not ashamed.
You’re Rio achievements should not be complete. There are 2 unattainable achievements. And the Smash Maniac achievement is a LOT more blocks than most people realize.
My guess is that it will be contained within the existing Rio app.
Will the 15 levels be part of the unfinished 15 levels in carnival uphveal
No, these will be separate levels for those who purchase the DVD or Blu-ray.
Apologies for not remembering where I read this, but a press release recently put out explained some more of the logistics of how the codes will work… also answering some of the previous posters’ questions in the process.
Announcement No. 1: The same code will work on more than one device (eg. you can use the same code from your purchased DVD to activate the bonus levels on your iPod, iPhone, and iPad).
Announcement No. 2: The codes will be redeemable through iTunes (go to iTunes store, scroll to the bottom, click “redeem codes” and enter the code). No mention was made of how the codes will be redeemed on other platforms but I assume you just substitute the equivalent of iTunes “redeem” functionality to whatever redeem/promo code entry system your platform uses.
–NOTE: Announcement No. 2, above, implies that one code will be attached to one iTunes account, which seems to support Announcement No. 1, above.
Announcement No. 3: Families will be able to share the same code.
Speculation on my part: I am guessing a system of tying the same code to 5 itunes accounts, similar to the way Netflix or HBO GO work, will be implemented since it really does not make sense to buy 5 copies of the same movie… a family movie at that… for you, your wife, two kids, and mother-in-law.
Also, since the codes will be redeemable via iTunes, this essentially makes the bonus levels the same thing as an in-app purchase. I can’t envision a scenario where the bonus levels can be unlocked via iTunes redeem button without them being the equivalent of an in-app purchase.
Hope this helps.
Finally, you didn’t ask… but I have to give kudos to Fox. Not only did they figure out a bullet-proof way to prevent someone (someone not like me) from pirating the movie, they also found a way to sell the movie to someone who has no intention of ever watching it (someone like me). Whoever at fox had this idea deserves a raise because it is genius.
Thanks so much for this response. It’s extremely informative and I’ll probably add some of this info to the post above. I am concerned about other platforms though, as most don’t have a seamless way to redeem codes like iTunes. I guess we’ll see. Thanks again — very helpful.
On another note, do you receive these press releases via email or did you read it online? If you can remember it would be really useful to know how you came about this info. Thanks.
Okay, I bought the dvd yesterday, downloaded the free Rio Angry Birds and went to redeem code. I was able to type the code in to spot where it said to enter “key” but nothing after that, the cursor just kept blinking after the final letter and I was not able to “register key” in the next step. I tried entering it several times with dashes, without dashes, after reloading and even through the upgraded which did the exact same thing. I went to the Itunes Store and searched for the redeem codes button only to find ‘redeem’ and it did not like that code, it wanted a credit card or gift card number. I tried through the Itunes Store front page and also through the apps store. I tried to redeem on my Ipad but that did not work either. I went to the correct level and tried to click on the spot, nothing. I got a bird to roll over the spot, nothing.
Can anyone help?
We have the directions for obtaining the Beachball levels on this page. Note that the directions are different for mobile and for computer. I hope this answers your question.
Finally got it to work. How tedious! Had to uninstall AB Rio, reinstall and then it worked. On the iPad, had to update apps.
Was this only for a limited amount of time? I’m new to Angry Birds and I brought the DVD about a month ago and there was nothing inside the case (except the disk obviously). Sort of annoyed… :(
You had to buy a copy of the DVD/Blu-Ray that had the promotion on the cover.
FWIW, They’re doing the same thing on the Rio 2 DVD/Blu-Ray coming out on July 15th. It has 15 Rio levels. I posted details here.
