1977 was of course the year of Rumours and the great Steely Dan album Aja. If we have nailed down 1971 and 1977 as truly great years of the 1970s (with nods to 1970, 1972 and 1978 as well), does anyone have a candidate for the best of the 1980s? Well aware we are into Fall territory here…

It turned out that John Lydon really did like Pink Floyd after all.

Warming to the theme.
1977’s album Animals by Pink Floyd is my favourite of theirs. Now in case you think they should have been swept away by punk, just listen to the lyrics. Roger Waters was far more angry than the ravings of the punks and he had hardly started (a mere hors d’oevres to the Wall and The Final Cut).

Probably contravened the BP’s rules with that version of Peaches @brianN. I heard it once on prime time Radio 1 back in the day. The DJ kept it going to the end, probably the best policy in the circumstances.

89132/2 Maybe the best score with 2 birds?

I agree, 1977 right up there and I think 1978 just as good, as both capture punk and the emergence of post punk before it all starts to go a bit electronic. Real Life by Magazine (1978) is an awesome album and this is one of the best punk singles ever.

Contractual obligation post about Angry Birds.
After 9 continuous days of running, 14-4 in version 1.6.3 did not deliver. I got 0-birders but not the scores. Bit stumped as to what version I was using in 2022. There’s a lot to choose from. Maybe 3.4.0. Sigh…
(I’m going to start the ellipsis appreciation society…)

Close but no cigar.
For 1972 you could have added Harvest by Neil Young. And the first Steely Dan album! Hey, I’m on board!

Finally, back to the group that made me buy my first ever single.
Also in 1971, The Yes Album, their best IMO. Lindisfarne Fog on the Tyne, a great listen throughout and Bryter Later by Nick Drake. Shifting back to 1970 and forward to 1972 it’s pretty good too but 1971 is crazily stellar. I do…[Read more]

The Doors as well – final track of final album before Jim Morrison’s demise.
I’ll do one more then let @hunnybunny put the case for 1972.
Or not, as the case may be.

May have to do a little trolling. Say something outrageous about Trump.
Oh…that’s impossible.

1971, Sticky Fingers, Rolling Stones. Again, right in the middle of their purple patch of albums. Bit of a dodgy song I’m afraid but great memories of college discos down in the beer cellar where the sweat used to drip off the low ceiling.
Our resident DJ always to finish with the Hawaii 5-0 theme music.

Led Zep IV – by broad agreement their best album, again 1971.
What more proof do you need?

Hunky Dory 1971! It just doesn’t stop. Bowie’s best? 1972 has a lot of catching up to do. There’s more to come yet.

4768 attempts on 14-4 and I have crawled up to 77th. How the hell did I ever manage 3rd place?

This 1971 album is one of the biggest sellers of all time, and another artist peak.

Deep Purple released Fireball in 1971. Again, at the peak of their (considerable) powers. They were the first group that weaned me off chart pop, much to my parent’s dismay I would imagine.

Squeaked my way through @hunnybunny with a couple of 6s. I got PARER wrong but nothing since so streak is over 750. At least one person is over 1000 though. I don’t play hard mode*, which helps. However, even in easy mode up to half the players were bombing out on CORER.
*In hard mode, once you get a letter correct you must stick with it thus…[Read more]

Anyway, happily chugging along by myself, feeling a bit like a DJ in the small hours. Back to 1971, who’s next. Who’s Next in fact. Townshend at the peak of his powers.
