Angry Birds Trilogy Flying to Xbox 360, PS3, and Nintendo 3DS

If you have been anxiously waiting for the Angry Birds to come flying through your 40-inch flatscreen HD television set — or even that 18-inch, 150-pound set with the rabbit ears on top — your wait may soon be over! Activision and Rovio have confirmed that they are teaming up to bring the Angry Birds Trilogy to gaming consoles! There is a lot that has been confirmed in a recent article by IGN.com, which even contains a nice video with a look at some of the imagery involved. (We took a couple screenshots and included them below, but be sure to check out IGN’s video as well.)

After reading the article and watching the video ourselves, we can confirm, speculate, and question nearly everything that you may want to know about this new game. So, let’s run down some of the highlights.

What we know:

  • The so-called “Angry Birds Trilogy” (herein called ABT) will be a single disc/cartridge that contains the first three mobile apps: Angry Birds, Seasons, and Rio.
  • ABT will be available for XBox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo 3DS. In addition to controller gameplay, gamers will be able to use Kinect, Move, and StreetPass, respectively, to fling birds at those evil pigs and marmosets. And for all our 3DS gamers, yes, you will be able to play in either 2D or 3D.
  • Update: On 12 July, Activision confirmed the pricing information. The discs will sell for $39.99 on Xbox 360 and PS3, and for $29.99 on 3DS.
  • Petri Järvilehto (Executive VP of Games, Rovio): “There are new cinematics, extras and other entertaining content.” We aren’t entirely sure what these extra and such will entail, but we do notice a mini-biography about Terence during the video, so it could include that.
  • Järvilehto: “The backgrounds have been animated, we’ve added lighting modes, reactive backgrounds, the list goes on and on.” Frankly, the images shown in the video look incredible. Even the Episode Selection Screen looks super slick!
  • Individual leaderboards for each level!

What we speculate:

Disclaimer: These speculations are based solely on images seen in the video. During the next few months, Rovio could very well change things, so any or all of these items could be nixed by the time the final product comes around.

  • About 18 secs into the video there they show an Episode Selection Screen of Angry Birds Seasons. Based on this it appears that the Mighty Eagle will be in the game! Notice the feather counter.
  • Also based on this image, it appears that the Facebook/Twitter levels will be unlocked or unlockable! Notice the feather/star counter is accurate for 18 levels.

What we don’t know:

  • When will it be released?
  • Will ABT receive updates? I believe this is what IGN means when they asked about the “free level packs iOS and Android players received”, but I’m just speculating about their author’s wording.
  • Will the aforementioned “individual level leaderboards” be inter-platform? That is, will XBox scores appear on the leaderboard of a PS3 user?

For Wii U it would be awesome because the touch pad on the controller can make it feel like the iOS version.

I quite agree, but I have to say this about a potential release date: I wouldn’t expect to see to see it in the stores for Christmas except as a “pre-order” for two reasons. First, this involves a major collaboration with Activision, Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. Secondly, this will involve a major programming and QA effort, since we’re talking about three separate systems, all with their own challenges.

I won’t even go into how the legal and marketing divisions of each company will have their own slice of this pie for licensing, royalties and other corporate necessities, since it’s not really germane here, except in the release timeframe.

Having said all that, I can’t help but admire Rovio for taking a HUGELY ambitious step with the AB franchise. I have little doubt that this will be a great success when the dust finally settles.

I am not familiar with the above platforms that ABT will be released on, but one reason that it may not be being released on the Wii is because of the Wii’s poor video resolution. It is only 480 and when connected to a 42″ or larger lcd or plasma, it isn’t as great as it could be. I am assuming that the platforms that it is being released on support at least 720 if not 1080 which would make the game look SOOOOOO much better.

Although I personally would think it would be cool to play AB on my 46″ plasma (even at 480)

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

I didn’t know that about Wii’s resolution. Interesting…

I think another major lacking in Wii is two-fold. First, it lacks a legitimate controller, most specifically a joystick on said controller. And second, its motion recognition isn’t half as good as Kinect or Move.

Rank: Gold Flinger with 7655 points
By Chicadee (@chicadee)

I’m a huge Wii fan but agree with @sparty83 in that the video resolution on a large screen TV is not good. My games look better on the portable TV. I’m awaiting the release of a new Mario Kart for the new Wii U. I’ve already enquired and there’s no sign of it yet and as much a I love AB, even if they do make it for the Wii U I won’t buy the new console until they release a new Mario Kart. I just googled the specs for the Wii U and the good news is the Video output resolution will be 1080p.

Rank: Master Slinger with 7205 points
By TruckDriver (@truckdriver)

See above, at @chicadee‘s comment about Wii’s poor resolution. 480p?? Phui!! I had better resolution with the monitor I bought with my Pentium II PC, back in the ’90’s!

Rank: Out of this World with 2605 points
By mariokart.cruz (@mariokart-cruz)

The highest resolution that the Wii can go up to with the Official Wii Component Video Cable is 576p.

Rank: Master Slinger with 7205 points
By TruckDriver (@truckdriver)

Ok, but even 576p ain’t all that much of an improvement. Or for that matter, even impressive. I’ve seen the Wii hooked up to a fairly large CRT type TV, and it looks OK. Doubtless the imprecise nature of that technology, combined with tricks like interpolation and anti-aliasing, to name but two help out a lot.

I wonder if it would look any better in S-video, provided one could rig a reliable conversion.

“Please don’t read the comments in the IGN article if you are sensitive to ‘Fowl’ language.” Is there really bad words, or is this some kind of Fowl/Bird joke?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

Bad language. Makes me like ABN even more, but I’m a little biased.

Rank: Master Slinger with 7205 points
By TruckDriver (@truckdriver)

It isn’t THAT bad. I’ve had far worse bombs tossed at me in boot camp, and survived. What the IGN comments truly illustrate is the general lack of civility, and perhaps intelligence, displayed by a group of lowbrows, doubtlessly ensconsced in the basement of their parent’s house, and desperately not wanting anyone to know about it.

Most definitely a far lower class of people than those here at ABN.

Rank: Gold Flinger with 7655 points
By Chicadee (@chicadee)

I haven’t clicked on the link yet but Slim has given a warning in the article above under the “What we don’t know” section re the language so no it’s not a joke – people get a bit agro sometimes and resort to this behaviour.

Re people getting agro over not being told prices, I can’t believe that at one of my local stores, people are preordering the Wii U without even knowing how much it will cost. You have to pay a deposit of 20 dollars. If you change your mind you can use the deposit on something else but that’s crazy – there’ll be massive competition between stores when it comes out and this store is not particularly well known for its ‘cheap’ prices!

DS/Lite: You can only play DS cartridges.
DSi/DSi XL: Playable cartridges are DS and DSi cartridges.
3DS (and eventually a 3DS XL): You can play DS, DSi, and 3DS cartridges.
With each new DS handheld system is released in stores, it looks like they added new specs. DSi is able to take pictures and have a DSi shop while the 3DS also has its own shop, takes pictures as well, record videos and play in 2D/3D

Also, the release date appears to be October 16.

I’ve played ABO on my niece’s PSP and it feels weird using its analog stick compared to when playing the game on the touchscreen devices (such as my iPod Touch or the several Android devices my family owns). You scroll through the buttons to figure out which would control which and end up still be confused. Yes, you can aim consistently on a PSP, but if you’re not careful, you can still be millimeters off your target.

I expect that those playing ABT on the Xbox 360 and PS3 with controllers would feel this same way.

Rank: Master Slinger with 7205 points
By TruckDriver (@truckdriver)

I don’t know, but isn’t it somewhat analogous to playing AB on PC, where you’re controlling everything with your mouse?

Rank: Master Slinger with 6700 points
By wanda (@wanda)

@truckdriver, it isn’t quite like the PC version. My son has a PSP and I have played on it, but it does take a bit of time to learn how each button functions. The PC. game is much simpler to play, in my opinion.

Rank: Master Slinger with 7205 points
By TruckDriver (@truckdriver)

That makes sense. I figured there would be some differences in terms of control, while delivering a roughly similar user experience. I have the apps on PC as well, and can testify to the intuitive ease of use.

Rank: Explosive with 2300 points
By AngryBirdsFanGuy438 (@angrybirdsfanguy438)

I play AB on PC and PSP and I prefer them to touchscreen devices. I feel that you can make more accurate shots, as with touchscreens, one little accidental tap and you have to restart the level.

Rank: Debriefed with 1320 points
By Superjustinbros (@superjustinbros)

When I first heard about this, I thought in the Rio levels they were going to replace the Caged Birds and Marmosets with the Pigs and their X-15 levels would be modified as well due to possible licensing issues with Fox and such, thus forcing Rovio to create two new birds based on Blu and Blu+Jewel.

Another thing I thought is Rovio could re-skin and release the levels they created from licensed properties (Chrome, Volcano and Pistachio, for example) so Triolgy would get pretty much every normal Angry Birds level in existence up to this point (yes, from Poached Eggs to Piglantis).

And hey, maybe they’ll bump up the strengths of the White Bird’s egg bomb so it’s evened out with the Black Bird, though I’m not crossing my fingers on it, especially since it’d break leader boards.

By danimario9

Wait, wait, WAIT! This can’t be real but it’s! I’ll get it in a few seconds when it’ll be in the stores.
