Angry Birds Space Utopia Update Out Now!

A new Angry Birds update has finally arrived! The delectably sweet Angry Birds Space Utopia (v1.2.0) update has landed on iOS, PC, Mac, Playbook, and Android via the Android Market and Amazon Appstore (as v1.2.1), with other platforms coming soon. As Dr. Venkman said best, “Look at all the junk food”. Utopia is a “food” (okay, junk food) planet and is chock full of donuts, candies, popcorn, lollipops and more. Snozberry anyone?

Note for Android Market: Danger Zone and the Mighty Space Eagle have landed on Android Market (Google Play)! We have a separate post since this is such big news! Read more here.

Note for iOS: A bug fix has been released in v1.2.1 which adds support for new GameCenter leaderboards.

If you didn’t know, an Angry Birds fan named Hayyie actually came up with the name Utopia. Per Rovio’s blog post, “Our fan Hayyie came up with the name ‘Utopia’, securing an exclusive piece of Angry Birds Space art as a prize for winning our competition a couple of months ago. Having the privilege of naming the next episode was never meant to be part of the prize, but after seeing the name, concept art and Hayyie’s sheer enthusiasm: We decided to run with it!”

This update includes:

  • Utopia includes 10 new cavity-inducing levels!
  • Doesn’t look like there are any new Eggsteroids this time around.
  • No new achievements in Game Center, but the “Menu Popper” achievement bug has been fixed.
Update: On 11 June, a new achievement appeared called Popcorn Popper. It has been added to the achievements page.
  • Pro tip! Sparkling lollipops are worth 3,000 points.
  • Pro tip! Look for exploding popcorn kernels.

I think the “daily eagle” is somewhat fixed with this new update. It may be too soon to tell, and therefore I am not 100% sure, but it seems to me that the eagle arrives on a more precise 24 hour schedule now. Before the update, it constantly appeared 1 hour late every day. Say, if one day it came at 6 pm, next day it is 7 pm, then 8 pm, and so on. Now, it seems to arrive at the same hour every day, at least for the two days after the update.

By Dani

I really appreciate all the hard work AB Nest does; but I do have 1 small pet peeve with Rovio. 1st, please let me qualify this by saying I understand AB Nest are iOS users. 2nd, while Android has ad-supported free versions, they are extremely annoying and block an apportionate part of the screen/game. 3rd, all Android users have to pay if you have certain types of devices (e.g. Kindle, Nook, etc.). 4th, Rovio has consistantly favored Apple by providing them with earlier releases and updates, as well as games within the game (e.g. M/Sp Eagle, Danger Zone, etc.). To pay or not to pay is always a dilemma when considering any game. By remaining within legal confines and not piracy of gaming, Rovio does appear to discriminate against users other than iOS; that is not to say that Mac users sometimes end up on the short end of the stick too. Let’s face reality. While ABs is fun and addicting, it is not comparable to more sophisticated and/or action games.

Rank: Master Slinger with 7205 points
By TruckDriver (@truckdriver)

Let me try to knock this one out of the park, as it were. First, not all of us are iOS users, as I have AB on 5 separate devices. Second, as with the iOS Free/Lite versions, if you set your device to “Airplane Mode” before opening AB, you shouldn’t see any ads, as an internet connection is required to serve them to your device. Third, this is true, but hey, how much entertainment do you expect for a mere $0.99? A dollar doesn’t buy a great deal anymore, and truly, hasn’t in more than 20 years, but AB is still worth the price. Fourth, well Rovio started out as iOS developers, so a certain bias towards that platform is to be expected, but in reality, some specific platform has to be first. As to the ME/MD/SE, the issues are more tech related than you might think since android is open source both in hardware AND software, so the numerous amounts of differing configurations are indeed a programming challenges. Finally, about paying or not paying, such a decision is best left to the developer in question. Some create their apps for the art of doing so, and aren’t as financially motivated as others. After all, there is no rule requiring any developer on any platform to simply give away his or her intellectual property without some form of compensation, merely because another may do just that. This is a critical distinction that most smartphone users seem to have missed, as many seem to expect that apps for their devices be delivered for free in all cases.

Hopefully, I’ve addressed all your concerns.

Rank: Well Traveled with 1855 points
By DocTonyNYC (@doctonynyc)

Wow! Very well said, TruckDriver.

On the issue of cost, I’m consistently amazed by the complaints people have relatively minor issues when, at most, players have paid a couple of bucks (and in many, many cases nothing at all) for AB games. You would think, based on the way some people go on about problems, that they were being robbed blind.

I can’t imagine getting more entertainment for such a small price. I probably need AB rehab, but I’ll admit that I’ve spent thousands of hours trying to master these games.

Rank: Master Slinger with 7205 points
By TruckDriver (@truckdriver)

Likewise. I mean, as to cost, well, I’ve dropped far larger sums in restaurants, casinos and grocery stores, to name just a few, than I’ve EVER paid for any version of AB on any of my devices. It’s all just a question of perspective, and you sound much like me. AB has delivered value to me far, far in excess of any cost to my bank account.

Granted, some of it has been teeth-gnashing, but it’s value just the same :-)

By Dani

I’ll keep this brief; then I do not intend to respond further. Most importantly, I was referring to a company (Rovio) who has retail merchandise, theme park(s), software, etc., and whom I am confident has a net profit in the millions of dollars. I was not referring to a specific individual or type of user. I even included a couple of compliments for both AB Nest and Mac users. Regardless of programming costs, open source or proprietary/intellectual rights, etc., a company’s philosophy and principles should be uniform and equitable. Rovio markets itself and its franchises as something for everyone, which is not necessarily true, depending on how you break it down. Without getting into neverending specifics and becoming overly technical, I was simply suggesting it would behoove Rovio to examine how, what, when and to whom they release their ABs games. Because AB Nest has some communication with Rovio, and in the interest of full disclosure, I have posted my statements here in addition to sending them to Rovio. In closing, to address TruckDriver and DocTonyNYC, I believe labeling Smartphone as having “missed” the distinction and that Android, or similar, users are having chronic “complaints” is without merit or justification; rather, it is a personal affront and attack. How you choose to spend your money is up to you; that’s why it’s America/USA. I can’t afford much nor do I have a Wii/Nintendo, Xbox, etc. Hence, how AB came to be for me. Lastly, please forgive any typos or lack of formatting. This time, I am utilizing a Smartphone, whereas the previous post was done with a different device. Needless to say, it is not an iPad, iPhone or the like/ similar.

By Laurence (@laurence)

I guess the other reason that M/Sp Eagle is yet to arrive on android (and PC, Nook, PSP, etc) is the issue regarding in-app purchasing, currently available on iOS devices, but not on the majority of (all?) android devices, which is currently proving to be a stumbling block for Rovio. I know a counter-argument would be that it could be added for free, but as that is not the case for iOS it would then be unfair to them if it became free for android. Rovio do seem to show bias towards iOS in many cases, but not all. There are examples of simultaneous releases, and even a couple of cases of Android obtaining an update before iOS. My final point would be that for most androids, you can get a free version that is regularly updated and in it’s entirety. The free version for iOS also contains adds, only has 3 episodes per world, and in the case of seasons and rio, hasn’t been updated for over a year. In conclusion, both platforms have pros and cons, so it’s not possible to say that one platform is really ‘better’ than another. :)

Rank: Master Slinger with 6945 points
By alfredhartojo (@alfredhartojo)

@laurence google play/android market already have in-app purchases, now what is holding rovio from releasing ME/SE is the payment system, they plan to use mobile payment/billing system to pay for ME/SE instead of credit cards and stuff. And it’s hard because they must get approval from every single mobile operator available now. That’s the problem it took so long for them to release the “Mighty Brothers”.

But I can do in-app purchasing on my Xoom tablet at the Amazon appstore already. That’s also one of the issues the the “Ice Cream Sandwich,” or Android 4.0 update was supposed to have addressed. Now, I know roll-out of that update for current devices has been rather ragged, but it’s already supposed to be the pre-installed OS on all new Android devices.

I knew about Android, particularly Amazon, getting updates (Rio) first. That’s one of the things I rather liked about Amazon, although, one was better off seeking out any updates on one’s own initiative, rather than waiting for the app store to alert you, unlike iOS, which seems to be quite timely in their notifications of such things.

The wild differences in free versions for Android and iOS has long intrigued me. After all, since they are both ad-based, the biggest question is why is one the full verision, and why is one a cut down version? To this day, I don’t think I’ve uncovered a satisfactory answer to that question.

And I agree with you about platform differences. However, in my case, I’ve nursed a long-held grievance with Apple for 20+ years for their often proprietary products and sometimes predatory pricing. The only reason that I recently acquired my iPad was due to professional necessity. The really personally horrid part about the whole thing, from my perspective, is that I’ve really come to like and enjoy the iPad..

Good God, what’s an economic purist to do??? :-)

I can understand everyone’s point of view on this thread. I think one thing Rovio could do to make Android users happier is to explain exactly why ME and SP are not yet available to all Android users, and if there is a way for Android users to get it.

If ME is available in the T-Mobile versions, (and yes, I can still purchase it as a gift for other T-Mo users), then why is it not available to other carriers. If Rovio would tell us for sure that contacting other carriers about enabling the purchase of ME, then I expect a lot of AB users would contact their carriers, and we could all enjoy ME.

ME is already in all levels of ABO for Android, so there would be no extra work on Rovio’s part. I don’t know whether or not it is already in other versions of AB for Android or not.

Anyway, just my thoughts on how Rovio could make Android users much happier.

Dani,

I wans’t going to address this at all, but that “personal affront and attack” comment is like the itch you can’t scratch. Being an inveterate review reader, I’ve seen more than my share of smartphone user reviews that take just the attitude I described, so I based my comments upon my experience, but left out specific examples in this forum, considering them to be out of place here.

Also, as a veteran of 20 years of online political discussion groups, where personal attacks are often the expected norm, I can unequivocally state that my comments were nothing of the sort. I am aware that my prose style tends towards the stern or even the grim, so being the generally affable person that I am, I try to leaven it with jokes, and other light-heartedness as much as possible.

Since you have no personal knowledge and/or experience of or with me, I can only speculate as to why you chose to label my words as you did, only to follow with a haughty, plonking line about free choice in America.

Therefore, with regards to your comments, I must now ask that you please substantiate them, or withdraw them.

By Dani

TruckDriver,
Against my better judgement, I will only respond based upon your dispassionate request to substsantiate or remove my statements, which I will do neither.
Your prose style is open to interpretation-stern, blunt, dismissive, rude or whatever form of semantics you prefer use.
There is something called the US Constitution, part of the Bill of Rights, which contains a thing called the First Amendment. Please look it up if you are unfamiliar with it.
The statements I originally posted, as well as any clarification(s), were solely designed to aid Rovio with future marketing potential and demographic data. AB Nest can choose to pass them along to Rovio or not to do so, since I have openly stated I shared the same dialog with Rovio.
Finally, please cease and desist immediately addressing any further comments directly to me, including those about me!!!! Thank you.

Rank: Well Traveled with 1855 points
By DocTonyNYC (@doctonynyc)

Dani,

I wasn’t gong t reply either. My comment, which wasn’t to you in the first place. I was responding to Truck Driver and simply commented on an issue that has bugged me for a while. I never specifically applied them to you I any way.

Since you insist on pointing out American values, a couple of things. . .

This is website with an international readership. Please remember that not everyone here holds U.S. values as dearly as you. (I am a U.S. citizen, and I happen to think many–not all–U.S. values are great, but I would never insist on imposing them on an international readership.)

The Constitution, and specifically the First Amendment, protects citizens from government censorship. It does not apply to a privately owned website. Fors example, the moderators here can delete any comment they wish–without providing any justification. To their credit, they are pretty specific about what they will and will not allow (in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this thread disappear–justifiably!). Even if the first amendment did give you the right to say anything you wish, certainly anyone can also ask you to justify your comments. That doesn’t seem unreasonable.

Finally, it’s definitely worth pointing out that the website is not affiliated with Rovio. Perhaps you complaints and concerns are better addressed to Rovio directly, rather than on a fan site.

For my part, I am done with this conversation. I wasn’t rude to anyone, including you, and I won’t tolerate rudeness directed at me.

Rank: Master Slinger with 7205 points
By TruckDriver (@truckdriver)

Dani,

I see you’ve responded to my request with nothing more than a continuation of your self-justified sermonizing.

Having sworn an oath to protect and defend the Constitution, I know quite a bit about it, including the fact that the Bill of Rights, (the first 10 amendments),is part of the Constitution, not the reverse as you state above. Perhaps you should study it, having made a grievous error, rather than entreating me to do so, to the accompaniment of more rude sermonizing.

Now, marketing and demographic suggestions about Angry Birds is all well and good, but such comments are far better directed to Rovio, than through a third party fan site. In that vein, since you’ve stated that you’ve shared your views with Rovio, doesn’t it seem somewhat redundant to post them here, at ABN, where they are rather out of place?

In closing, and I will not be addressing this again, I have not made a personal attack on this site, whether against you, or anyone else. If, indeed, I had done so, the evidence of same would be clear and unambiguous, and would not have to have been cut out of whole cloth. If you think otherwise, then I invite you to re-read my comments again, in the context of their proper timeline, but this time, with the application of logic.

Dani,

I always try to stay neutral in an argument (I’ve learnt it’s safer on the Internet to do so) but I think TD and DocTony have a point – you can talk about US constitution if you like – I’m guessing there’s something about freedom of speech in it, but to use it to justify comments on an international website may be pushing it? Also remember, Rovio is not a US company – it’s Finnish – the US constitution has a much say there as I do about the UK government!

On the other hand, TD’s style of writing does sound, well, intimidating sometimes, but that’s just the way he is! TBH, I wouldn’t be surprised either if this whole thread magically disappears shortly, as I’m failing to seete relevance of this to ‘Utopia update now out’, which is what this thread should be about!

Perhaps is you and TD which to continue your conversation on the US Constitution, you can use the PM system, if you register for the site! (to clarify – that’s humour :p)

Finally, if I’ve offended anyone, it was unintentional, I’m just attempting to make my point as briefly as possible! I’ll now add my name to the least of people who are ‘not replying again’ :)

1st) “please let me qualify this by saying I understand AB Nest are iOS users” – I got my android “smartphone” in april of 2011. First thing I downloaded was Angry Birds, found this site in May of 2011 and promptly signed up.

2nd)”while Android has ad-supported free versions, they are extremely annoying and block an apportionate part of the screen/game” – As others have mentioned, putting your phone in Airplane mode will disable the ads. Also, I have found that if you hit the pause button and then back to play, the ads are gone. A very minor inconvience for a TOTALLY FREE game.

3rd)”all Android users have to pay if you have certain types of devices (e.g. Kindle, Nook, etc.)” Just like you should never say never, one should be careful when using all. I have downloaded every version available and have NOT paid one red cent.

4th) “Rovio has consistantly favored Apple by providing them with earlier releases and updates, as well as games within the game” – If you go to the updates page you will see how Android has, on occasion, recieved an update before or at the same time as IOS.

I have, in the past, complained about not getting an update but I know it’s “coming soon” and with a little patience, I will have it. (an added bonus of having to wait is that all the walkthroughs are done, average scores are higher and tips on completing the levels have been posted)

Would I like the Mighty Eagles? Not really sure. There is no Game Center equivelant for the Android so the only person who would know if I got all the feathers would be me. There are lots of achievements in Game Center that I feel I have accomplished but without the equivalant for Android, there is no proof, and I can live with that. Besides, from some of the posts I have read HERE, there are plenty of problems with hacking of Game Center. Thats what I like about this site. It’s well run and has a system of checks and balances for verifying scores.

Rovio can discriminate how ever they want for the release of THEIR games. They don’t even have to do Android versions if they don’t want to. Based on the fragmentation of the Andriod platform, sometimes I am suprised anyone does Android apps. I’m guessing it’s tougher to write in code to allow ads than it is to leave it out. (A little sarcasm in that last line, of course its easier to leave it out)

With the success of the Angry Birds franchise, I am completely suprised that the game is only $.99 .

In closing, Thanks Rovio for hours and hours of FREE entertainment, and Thanks to Angry Birds Nest for all the fine work they do here. (and allowing us to rant like we do at times)

By Dani

Sparty83,
1. I was not referring to Android users specifically nor member users of AB Nest.
2. You assume incorrectlyI utilize a Smartphone with Airplane mode capability.
3. I qualified “all” with the disclaimer/caveat of “if.”
4. Extremely few instances exist of Android, Blackberry or Symbian OSs obtaining releases/updates prior to iOS.
Regarding the Game center, I don’t care about it per sey; however, when a release or update has only 10 levels, the ME, etc., would provide added enjoyment and (from personal experience with MD), as well as a time killer while awaiting new games.
As I have previously stated numerous times, I applaud AB Nest’s efforts.
If Android is so fragmented, it is surprising it has an enormous market share on numerous types of devices.
Of course Rovio can develop and release its games on platforms of their choosing. One would think, the more-the merrier.
The game is Not only .99, depending upon your OS.
I hope this clarifies things, and I would like to close this portion of the discussion thread as it relates to me.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

You’re right, of course. I apologize for the little detour into geekdom here, but it is a coincidence that I am writing an article on the concept of utopia in science fiction (I’m an English professor). Utopic literature is about idealized worlds (dystopic is about nightmare worlds), and it’s a common theme running through SF literature (and film, or course). Not wanting to think to deeply about this (it is just a game!), but it begs the question is this utopia for the birds or the pigs (or both?).

Nevertheless, I’m still laughing that the ideal world is filled with popcorn, waffles, lollipops, and donuts.

Danger Zone was part of the original app release on 22 Mar for some platforms (iOS as in IAP, PC as cost-included, and Galaxy Android devices). As for the future releases and availability, we do not know at this time.

when utopia come out for PC.(if not tomorrow i will get my revenge.)P.S.it probably won’t won’t happen.

We don’t know. And before you try to get your revenge, maybe you should try converting code from iOS to PC to realize how difficult it is.

By PigFlinger1234 (@pigflinger)

Haha, i know it’s possible, but it’s kinda hard and complicated. Should only be done w/ a professional and experienced programmers (I’m not one of them!:D)

By TruckDriver (@truckdriver)

“Complicated” is a bit of an understatement. Rovio seems to be always on the lookout for C++/Lua programmers. I don’t know a great deal about Lua code, other than it’s a scripting language embeddable within C++. And C++ has a compiler for just about every platform out there. So, QA is probably Rovio’s biggest challenge.

i don’t have revenge & what is an IOS to PC code?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

I’m saying that it is difficult to transfer the coding for the app from mobile devices to computers. PC’s update will land soon.

Did anyone notice that the Cold cuts planets look less blue in the cutscenes after the Utopia update? Or is that just me?

Why do I have the feeling that this update will come to android after the 3 months samsung galaxy exclusivity if “Danger Zone”,anybody think the same?coz’ the exclusivity ends about 2/3 weeks from now.

Why don,t you make a new angry birds game I have think for a new angry birds game you can make. It is called Angry Birds Hot Wheels Battle force 5. You can name the episodes each episode has 11 levels. In the first episode the king pig build a flying machine to take the angry birds eggs. in the last level you have to have a boss fight with the king pigs flying machine then after that the king pig rebuild he,s machine took the angry birds eggs again then it is on to the next episode. Then the king pig drop his book of a machine on how to build the machine that can fly and role there are 6 pieces in the third episode the,re will just be 4 pieces that can shoot and fly I will tell you where the pieces are there are also games on the pieces if you get them all the time if yo get a piece there will be a video but if you do not get a piece you will have to stay in that level first piece in episode 3-2 the next one is in episode 3-4 the next one is in episode 3-6 next one is in episode 3-10 next one is the wheel in episode 4-11 that is a very hard level it is very hard to get the piece beacause it is shooting lazers it is a good thing that there are 21 birds to get it you have to kill all the pigs kill the king pig and broke he,s snapper machine then the king pig is nice then in episode 5 yo have to fight monsters to get that piece last piece is in episode 5-9 the mighty is now red bird and saber together you tap the 5 on the top left it is next to the pause button on the right when you shot red bird and saber together and when yo tap saber will turn arond thank you.

it would make a lovely mini web game but don’t get your hopes high. and what @Kartflyer says:(below)”We are just a fan site, we have no control over what Rovio does.”

Just got the update (to version 1.2.1 for some reason) for my Android phone! I also got a free Space Eagle when I started up the game.

Got a notice that I earned a space eagle when I opened AB Space, but then program closes/shuts down. Can’t access any of Space now to play. AGHHHH. Help?

What device are you using? May want to try restarting your device.

Android. Samsung Galaxy phone. Will try.

Rank: Master Slinger with 5615 points

Nope, didn’t work. Still closes/shuts down immediately after notifying me of space eagle.

Samsung Galaxy S II 4G – TMobile SGH-T989

Please report this to Rovio. Seems to be an issue with SGSII compatibility, looking at some of the reviews on GPlay.

Rank: Master Slinger with 5615 points
By ABinTX (@abintx)

Working now. Don’t know why it wouldn’t for first hour or so other than just to aggravate me…lol. Too bad I have to actually do work today or I could play, play, play :)

Now I have to learn what the Space Eagle is and does.

Rank: Master Slinger with 5615 points
By ABinTX (@abintx)

Spoke to soon,…went back to look at game some more and it closed down on me again. Retried, closed. Retried, closed. Retried, opened and stayed open. Obviously there is some problem/bug with this. Who/how do I report??

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

Probably support [at] rovio [dot] com would be your best bet. And Twitter if you have that.

Rank: Master Slinger with 5615 points
By ABinTX (@abintx)

Did that. Hopefully they fix soon.
Guess nothing to do but wait ?
AGH. No fair. I want to play! :(

I played the first level and now it won’t let me back on at all. Just crashes every time I try to open up again.

Rank: Master Slinger with 5615 points
By ABinTX (@abintx)

It still crashes when I try to open. I emailed Rovio but no solution yet. I can’t even get in to Space to play ANY of the games…the whole program just crashes and shuts down within seconds of loading. Am I the only one with this problem??

A bit strange that Google Play did not advertise Space Eagle and DZ in their description. ( unless I missed it )
Those are two major additions for the platform.

No kidding. But if they advertised everything, we may be out of a job ;)

I was only able to post the D-1 in DZ. To get all 30 levels you have to buy for $.99. I dont mind that. I’m updating AB Space now so I can play all levels.

Hey Jeseib, can you provide us with some information about Danger Zone? Can you play Level 1 for free, then are prompted to purchase when going to Level 2? Can you say how much? Thanks!

I just bought it after playing one level. That’s Awesome!

Rank: Out of this World with 2535 points

You get level one for free then have to purchase the rest for .99. Sorry, when I made the original post I just saw that I had DZ and didn’t play it yet. I was just so excited that I got it.
