That’s right! Samsung announced today at CES International that Angry Birds will be available in full HD on Samsung’s new Smart TVs. Actually, Tim Baxter, president, Samsung Electronics America, announced the agreement by having a conversation with the Red bird on the huge screen behind him, which you can see by skipping ahead to about eight minutes in the video above. As far as we know this may be the first time any of the birds have spoke a complete sentence. I’m just glad there was a translator there to translate his squawk-talk into something we humans could understand. The video is a bit bouncy, so I’ve transcribed it below.
The Angry Birds believe Samsung Smart TVs could be a powerful weapon for us. Larger screens, brighter colors, more power. The pigs should be truly afraid. Tim, please make this happen. That is all.
Let’s address some things that were announced:
- The Angry Birds game will be available through the TV alone — not through an external system like Roku.
- Samsung Smart TVs 2010 and newer will have access, likely as soon as this year.
- The app will be free and be available in full HD!
- Samsung Smart TVs will also have access to an “Angry Birds On-Demand” channel, which will screen never-before-seen Angry Birds animations.
While this is indeed awesome, there are some looming questions.
- One of the biggest questions I have is how will the controls work?
- How will apps be updated and how timely will these updates arrive? I assume there is a simple update mechanism built into the Smart TVs, but how difficult will be be to push these updates as other platforms receive will be the real test (IMHO).
- Which apps will be available? The images I’ve seen show Angry Birds original and Angry Birds Seasons, but not Rio. That makes sense though, as Rio would likely require a separate licensing agreement between Samsung and Fox.
As we find more information, we will keep you posted. Thanks to Austin for the heads-up.
Oh, and one more thing…
I know (Bird Leader here) that only the die-hard Angry Birds fans will read this far, so I wanted to see if anyone ever noticed something. Watch the video above closely and pause at the 09:45 mark. Now play it back a few times. If you look close you’ll see that is not a bird flying through the air. It’s a pig! Now squint and you’ll see a red bird sitting on top of the structure with a white egg just below him. I know, I know, the point here is that the pig in the video has created his own bizarro version of Angry Birds where he’s in control, but as is typical I can’t help but wonder if there isn’t more to this. On more than one occasion Rovio has teased a version where the pigs are in control, not the birds.
Thanks to “anonymous” for pointing out that this scene is this video (links to YouTube), which was shown last summer at ASM ’11.
I suggest video from here, but I haven’t see it entirely…
Greetings from Mexico.
Very Interesting video. Slim, you should add this video to the post if that’s okay.
There, more on the video: From 24:10 to 26:05… almost 2 minutes of info. A little hilarious, and… sweet :)
Thanks! I found a shaky one on YouTube that I’d rather use because it can be embedded and played back on mobile devices. I always appreciate the feedback though!
Hmm, Me & My Friends always waited for Angry Pigs!
The birds are now getting a taste of their medicine. lol
The last pic is from this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=us2d0gsotvw which was shown last summer at asm ’11
Cool, thanks
Cool. So I guess it’s not a new game, just an old promo to the start of an old Rovio conference of some sort.
I wish this was a plan game in the works (but you never know), I love the pigs more than the birds.
That was extremely funny and I laughed when it showed the troll pig! Sad that it isn’t some secret plan.
That’s cool, flying pigs lol.
There are some persistant rumors about apple tv ( not itv ) as well.
Which more ports of Angry Birds be made in 2012
Sweet, I have a Smart TV so this will be fun. Will be interesting to see how the controls work.
I’ll go out on a limb here and say that probably there will be a few extra buttons on the remote control to allow for its use as a wireless mouse to control the game.
Oh!!This make me more interesting to Samsung Smart TV rather my always-first-choice Sony Bravia…
There are animations for Rio in that clip though, such as at 09:25. There’s also the Tyrkisk Peber animation as well
when will it likely be released?
It says this year in the video
will you upload the new short films to the site ?
Depends on if they are publicly available through a site like YouTube.
I reckon someone will upload them at some point to YouTube, so even if Slim decides not to post them here (for legal reasons), they’ll be around somewhere!
that would be great
Can you actually play it? Awesome!
there’s a new update for angry birds for pc!
what is it?
Its to fix the golden egg #1 issue.
Fixes quite a few bugs, including the Golden Egg 1 bug, the “Level Skip” bug, and possibly the “Scores Ending in 9” bug.
Slim, what’s the “Level Skip” bug?
Laurence discovered a way to skip a level in PC. That method was fixed in today’s update.
cool
Very nice…
Will it come to other TVs?
No other info yet.
Are these TVs 3D?
Don’t think so: read more about it here
Does any one know how you play it?
Uhoh, it’s Friday the 13th. Rovio better not release an update today or else someone “could” go wrong. lol.
The video is called KAAL (Kill all audio & lights) the video can be found here {link removed}
From the post:
This post is outstanding and timely. I just purchased a Samsung Smart TV Series 8000 plasma last month.
We are still in the process of getting it set up in the basement family room.
I will have to check for the ABs application and set up.
I was unaware that Rovio and Samsung set up a partnership in this area. Thanks to ABN for this post.
