Angry Birds Rio Rocket Rumble Walkthrough Level #17

Our strategy for Rocket Rumble Level #17 is to fling the Red bird into the first detonating cord, through the tiny opening. Then do the same for the second cord. The score in the video below is 130,120.

Just like video. I was trying the method before coming here, but it’s one of those where you’re relying on a vertical piece of wood to fall a certain way.

True that, Galgaron! It’s bad enough that you have to do countless tries to have the plank fall right. (It must decapitate 1 of the 2 mushrooms in the opening.) What’s even worse is that you can eventually nail it with first two birds and still fall short of 3 star score (mine 128,410). It’s more obvious than ever that skill is losing importance to a pseudo-random number generator.

i don’t understand the comment(s) about needing the wood to fall a particular way?

it’s not the easiest shot (the 2nd one) but I don’t think you need the wood piece to fall any particular way, at least from what i’ve noticed. There is times when yes, the flight path is blocked, but that happens on all sorts of levels.

As far as the game becoming “more random and less skill” I wouldn’t say poached eggs 1-1 required anymore skill then this level.

I agree with you @tmax, the wooden plank is not a real problem, it only “disturbs” a good vision of the entrance of the cave, and particulary of the 2 mushrooms right below. Most of the time, you aim a wee millimeter too low and bounce back because of one of them. I you do a good launch, you can easily break the plank and reach the red cable.

I am playing on iPhone and unfortunately, i have no tip to add for help, would only say that a little impulse (instead of a “pure” soft arc) when launching the second bird, might be useful to reach the entrance of the cave properly.

Here are some tips that might help lining up the shots. I’m on a PC, so don’t know if this will help with mobile versions, but just in case…

First zoom all the way out. Before you begin, notice that there’s a fairly bright star a bit above the second red bird’s head. You’ll need this star to line up the second shot.

Aim the first bird straight ahead then move him up just a pixel or so. There’s a bit more leeway to get him in the tunnel than in the second shot.

For the second shot, pull back the sling shot and align the bottom of the wide part of the sling just barely above the star mentioned above. It might take a few tries to get this just right, but keep paying attention to where your sling is relative to the star, and then adjust your shot a little higher or lower as necessary.

In general, with shots that are tricky like this, I always try to find some sort of background reference for alignment, and experiment in relation to the reference point to zero in on just the right angle. Sometimes the reference point might be relative to the bird being fired, or the sling, or where you finger (or mouse) is pulled back — depends on what’s in the background.

Hope this helps!

I finally figured out that for the second

For all of those who are going/went insane trying to beat the average score for this level I’d just like to say you are/were not alone. My 137,900 (achieved on my iPad), is the only time I beat the average. Prior to that my best score was 134,760 which was also on the iPad. (My best score on the PC was 134,580.) At the time of posting, the average score was 134,984. I kept swapping back and forth from the PC to the iPad and found I got better 1st bird destruction (which is crucial), on the iPad. The 1st bird destruction on the PC was so miserable I was seriously thinking of emailing Rovio to ask what was wrong with this level. I personally still think there is something wrong with it as you should be able to get a lot more higher scores from the 1st bird than are given. The only thing that stopped me sending an email was seeing a couple of the higher scores were achieved on a PC – I think – unless the PC users all did what I have now done i.e. achieved the score on an iPad or some may have used their phones.

Anyhoo, like I said, it’s a shocker this level and I fully understand anyone giving up/walking away from it. I almost did and certainly won’t be going back.

@chicadee You’re definitely not imagining things. There are quite a few levels in Original, Rio and Space that are what I call PC-cursed. I found after extensive automated testing that PC has a lower max score than Android/iOS, and sometimes even a shot that simply can’t be done on PC. I sent all my data to Rovio, but I don’t expect any response. On the bright side, I found levels where PC kicks butt. I’m with you, though. It annoys the crap out of me. :)

I found that I needed a score somewhere between 58 – 60k on the first bird to get an above average score of 135 – 136k. I only got this when the first shot cleared all three mushrooms at the mouth of the lower tunnel (around 500 points for each) and when that vertical piece of wood just in front of the second tunnel was destroyed. If my first shot score was less than 58K I reset.

For the second shot I did what @philsey suggested and lined up the bird’s top feather with the tracer from shot 1 (it takes some adjustment to get it right). My best score was 136410, with another one of 135k, so I’m above the current average of 134858 and I will leave it at that and move on.

Just wanted to update @junkenmetel‘s PC aiming post. On my version, that star above Red’s head at full zoom out no longer exists. The way I hit the 2nd shot cave is to look at the mountain ranges in the background. The closer mtns are dark blue, and the distant ones are purple. Simply aim so Red’s belly touches that very narrow purple band, and you’ll hit the cave every time.

If you prefer to play zoomed in full, aim so Red’s bottom tail feather is barely touching the top of the purple mountain in the background. Works every time.

This Challenge is actually one of the more enjoyable for me because there is a decent chance of improving; I’ve had no improvement in 3 of the prior 4. Red Planet 5-30, Death Star 2 6-6, & Cherry Blossom 1-15 were all a bust; only Short Fuse 28-1 was a success.

For this one, regardless of your platform, as the others are saying, the key here is to take the time to figure out the sling poison for the 1st 2 shots so that they slide into the openings to ignite the fuses, after that, a lot is luck. My best is only 139170 & after the 1st shot I only has 61k. With 63k-64k on the 1st shot, I’ve ended up in the mid 130s, so I can’t figure it out : -(

What’s working for me on iPad is being zoomed all the way in (can’t see right opening). For the 1st shot I’m pulling the sling back & then positioning the sling bands so that they are together with no light in between & the whites of red bird’s eyes are barely visible. For shot #2, pull back almost the same, but slightly down so that the bands are barely separated with just a sliver of light between them; this time, all of the white of red bird’s right eye is visible. Simply adjust for your device, platform & the way you shoot.

@bernersenn Wish I had a better answer for you, my friend, but it’s entirely up to you. :) We know there are hundreds (maybe thousands) of these scores on these leaderboards. Some of them are likely high scores, but there’s no way to know. It’s not possible to forbid these scores, so IMO, each player has to decide for himself. There are a few ways a player can handle this:

1. Post the score. Since these boards are full of gift scores, posting yours isn’t an unfair advantage. It’s actually unfair to you not to post it. Since your score would put you around 85th place, I think it’d be fine if you posted it. I wouldn’t think any less of you :)

2. Post the score, but subtract the 3,000 points. Being anti-powerup, this is what I do. It seems fair to me. I’m not letting the gift affect my scores, but I’m also not abandoning an otherwise great score, just because it was corrupted by gift points. :)

3. Don’t post the score at all. Also a perfectly valid option.

IMO, to be fair, the only gift scores that should never be posted “as-is” are high scores, because on many levels, those extra 3k points could make the high score completely unbeatable by anyone else.

@justpast40 He’s talking about those little presents/gift boxes containing a free powerup (courtesy of some sponsor) that randomly appear in Rio. They drop in bulk for the first week or so after a new update, then taper off. Whenever there’s some new game or update Rovio wants to cross-market, they’ll make a few drop “Courtesy of Thing being Marketed”.
