  • Thanks @fenikus :)
Ahh the conspiracy theory @kelani hmm yaa yep that's it !!
  • Dagnabit Princess !!!
  • @Kathy A lot of tricks like that were used by pinball designers. They found there's a certain ratio between difficulty/reward that will keep people playing longer and maximize profits. Too easy, people get bored. Too hard, people get mad. Almost every game maker uses their tricks, so I don't see why Rovio wouldn't also. :)
  • Hmm Makes pperfect sense @kelani but how actually do you think they could control that on a game you've downloaded to your device? I can see that in a casino or even a programmable pinball/video game but on your ccomputer /phone/tablet ? They wouldn't have a way to track ohow often you actually play the gamev so no way of knowing the level of satisfaction of the player?
  • And if true. Rovio should know I'm very dissatisfied atm and ready to quit so you think they throw me a bone to keep me interested:D
  • Night Pa ♡
  • Night Ma
  • @Kathy AB tracks all kinds of things, that's how people get iOS achievements. "played for 30 hours" "broken 10,000 blocks" "fired 5 birds backwards" etc.. The game doesn't care about your level of satisfaction because the 'pinball ratio' isn't personalized. It's a generic equation that applies to the majority of people.

In pinball, one way they used it was to figure out how long to make each ball last. Too long, and they lose profits. Too short, and people quit playing. Eventually, they figured out the sweet spot was like 42 seconds. So they designed games around that.

If AB used it based on amount of time played, all they'd need to track is hours played. They already do that. My guess is it'd be based on days of the week. So the game'd need to know the current date, and date of last improvement. It knows both. :)
  • I wish I could remember what that research is called. I thought it was Pinball theory or pinball metrics, but it's not.
  • @fenikus Or maybe he got too many devices plugged in there :) What is it with the flaky electricity over there? You still on DC?
  • No @TomPuss. We switched over to Tesla's electricity a few years ago. ha ha
  • @kelani Pinball psychometrics?? maybe. . I know what you mean, but can't find the term either.

@rat Hi dear, what made me wonder was someone saying "it looked like it was charging, but it wasn't". Bizarre - here, if there's an outage, everything just cuts off, no ambiguity.
Edit: Oh you mean like Tesla coils tee hee, how about candlepower :)
  • No @TomPuss. I mean Alternating Current, AC. We use AC just like you do. OK, not quite like yours. It's a different voltage and frequency. But if you cut it off, no ambiguity here either. lol
  • Hmmm yesterday warm and humid overhere - today rather old and wet, wet, wet.
    Good afternoon to you all
  • @bernersenn Old and wet? I know how you feel :)
  • @tompuss typo, had to be 'cold and wet'. Argh, the keyboard of the Ipad isn't my thing.
  • Did @y'all know that when J.P. Morgan (who was backing Edison) put the financial squeeze on Westinghouse during the "War of Currents", Tesla tore up all licensing contracts with Westinghouse guaranteeing him riches and thus allowed Westinghouse to continue building the Niagara Falls power plant? So we owe to this unbridled genius more than just for his inventions (even if electricity gets flaky sometimes in some hoodoo voodoo Bostonian houses).
  • @bernersenn, sorry about the bad weather, pal. On the bright side, more time to fling, no?
  • @fenikus we went out today, depite the weather. Now it's time for flinging. Came to game #5 in HH
  • @bernersenn Yeah, I guessed:) Ipad ruins my typing, off to Apple Store tomorrow to get wireless keyboard twinned to this pad - my second (smashed first one on tiled floor thanks to so-called 'smart' cover unhooking itself). Will be comfy typing on hols. Sorry about weather.
  • @tompuss sometimes at home I have my pc next to me, just for chatting. The pc isn't coming with us on holiday... :-) about the weather: we will manage this, tomorrow it will be better. Wednesday bad, etc
  • Did you guys notice that with one of the latest iOS updates, the iPad on-screen keyboard is now divided into left and right pieces? Makes it much easier to handle, but it's still not the real thing.
  • @TomPuss, my understanding is that DC current used to work just fine for household use, supposedly even better than AC. But Edison's problem was that he couldn't devise a way to transmit it long distance. He had to have an infrastructure of closely spaced "stations" to make it work. It would have worked in NYC but not in places like Texas.
  • @fenikus, @kelani Thanks for electrical enlightenment :) off to neighbors for drinkies, BBL
  • @fenikus DC was inferior in every way, and it killed a LOT of people. Also, it couldn't be converted to higher/lower voltage easily, so instead of one power cable, the power plants had to use separate power cables for outputting each voltage. Since those plants had to be within a mile of the customer, the telephone poles that needed 2-3 AC cables instead needed hundreds of cables. In NY there got to be so many people couldn't see the sky in places.
  • @Kelani, yep. Supposedly Edison was working on a better way but couldn't flesh it out. Don't get me wrong, I'm not on Edison's side. How could I be when NT was my brethren. He's an idol back home.
  • @fenikus I wondered if you were a closet Edison-lover! :P

As a kid, I lost all respect for Edison when I learned how he reneged on his deal with Tesla ($50,000 I think). Then after reading about his secret funding of a half-working electric chair, and seeing the videos of his animal electrocution/scare tactics, he earned a top 10 spot on my Terrible Human Beings list.
  • Anyone know if Xbox and PS3 scores allowed on the boards? One platform wasn't. I think it was Chrome.
  • @fenikus what do tou mean with divided into left and right pieces on the Ipad keyboard? Didn't notice any difference
  • @fenikus Am on version 6.0, you can do keyboard split there already.
  • Oh thanks so much @kel - what a Pussy riot. .

BTW, I assume you're already familiar with THE anagram of Spiro Agnew :)
  • Hey peeps
Not stopping tonight but me and hubby were just talking about The Wire and I remembered that @kelani (I think) mentioned Idris Elba? If you can, please check out Luther,it's just fantastic. He plays a detective in a BBC crime drama. Obviously the acting is sublime but the stories are utterly gripping. I highly recommend it for everyone!
    Ok that's my IMDB moment!
    Toodles X
  • Great anagrams BTW!
@tompuss a pussy riot indeed! Lmao!!
  • @Tompuss I can't recall the one you're...probably referring to, but he's got thousands, many unprintable. Is it one of these?

    Rowing Apes
    Raw Pigeons
    Pigeon Wars
    Ignore Wasp
    Power Gains
    Swing Opera
    Swain Grope
    Grape Winos
    Organ Swipe
    Pawing Eros
    Wage Prison
    Wigan Poser
  • @JLZ Holy crap, that's Oprah!

edit: I'll check that out. I like Idris. He's like a UK Denzel
  • None of the above, dear @kelani, and certainly NSFBP. . . (Hint - 3 words)

@JLZ666 me Wire fan too! Hadn't heard of Luther, tx for tip!
  • Seriously, hand on heart, I just laughed out so loud that hubby gave me his " WTH is going on now?" glower! Oprah @kelani?..........back to the drawing board!
  • @fenikus your shot in HH #5 was a perfect shot, any details to it? This game shows exactly what I meant when I said that scores are random.
  • @bernersenn, there must be an iPad setting to have the split keyboard and I somehow unwittingly turned it on. @TomPuss, do you know?

Edit: Oh duh, it's not that hard to find: Settings/General/Keyboard/Split Keyboard.
  • @kelani I'm never using that thing again! Need to find one that doesn't make me look like a cross between Oprah and Veruca Salt! Btw, hubby's 2 fave cop shows are The Wire and The Shield. Shield didn't make it as big across here but he did his best to tell everyone who would listen about it.
Turning in for an early night so gonna love and leave.
    Nighty night @all
  • @bernersenn, I have no top secret tips for HH 5, except to tell you that I played that level a lot by my standards (when I hear @Kelani talk about how many times he played certain levels, I'm usually not even close to those numbers). I experimented with a lot of angles of YB and timing of release. My high score was when I let the helicopter go almost to the middle of left platform so definitely later than video and posts. One tip I can give you is to more focus on watching the TNT barrel than the helicopter carrying it.

Edit: This tip is for maximizing the chances of downing the helicopter the right way. From then on, it's up to luck what score you'll get.
  • @kelani I didn't like the Shield, simply because there wasn't one single character I could get fond of. In Wire, there were many. So - agree to differ on that one? :) This has been a fun evening! Thanks @kel, @fenikus, @bernersenn, @JLZ666,
    Nighty night, @all
    xoxo

  • I agree @tompuss,Omar.......what can I say? ;)
    Sweet dreams x
  • Hello everyone. ..I'm happy that my tablet problems generated all the chit chat on electricity hee hee I've learned some things i did not know:)
Anyway you were right @fenikus And @kelani it was just my charger.. the one that sold me yesterday didn't work for some reason but today I made Sure I tried a kid at my work who has the same tablet charger and it worked fine. So i went back to the store and got the 5v 2A wall port and a new cable.A friend of mine had also said the same thing so all is well now. Phone port is still loose so battery running low..
    Gonna go flinging. .
OB drinks for all and I'll have a Double Marmoset Killer please
