Disney Shuts Down LucasArts - Just 154 days after acquiring LucasArts, as part of its $4B acquisition of LucasFilm, Disney has shut down LucasArts, laying off over 150 people and leaving in question the future of Star Wars: First Assault and Star Wars 1313. Disney will continue to use the LucasArts name to license games; however the studio is no more. LucasFilm said the following in a statement: “After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”

  • Luckily, ABSW is a Rovio game created initially with the partnership of LucasArts. I don't think we will see any significant side effects in the app. It's Rovio's biggest game at the moment, and they won't likely let Disney decisions get in their way.
  • As Disney have retained the Licensing for LucasArts - despite getting rid of the company - I don't see any problem with AB:SW as it is really just a "licensed by" product not a "created by" product.
