Yesterday i was thinking about the angry birds tournament on Facebook,i think it has failed according to my opinion.First of all what do we mean by a tournament,in simple words it is a competition among people but the angry birds tournament is just a competition among friends.It isn’t in true sense a tournament.Most of the ABN members have started competing on the ABN for those Facebook levels.I have been winning tournament for consecutive 3 weeks by only COMPLETING one level.I have around 160 friend on fb and around 35 of them have at least one level in the angry birds friends.
Actually there is very little difference between a tournament level and a normal level.a tournament level just offers some power ups on completing and the winner gets 6 all in one powerup(which i totally dont care about).for an abn member there is no difference we will be competing for a normal level as well as for a facebook level.

MY SUGGESTIONS TO IMPROVE THE TOURNAMENT
1.scrap the current system and make it global(ike gamecenter)
2.award the top 1000, top 500,top 100 and give them powerups according to that say a top 10 person gets around 200 all in power ups.here we are just fighting it out for 6 powerups.
3.i think they should allow limited no. of tries say 40 for each level
with whoever getting into top 10 getting some award.

what are your thoughts!

You won’t be able to stop cheaters on a system like that, like you can here. Otherwise, it’s a nice thought. I think Facebook and Rovio would have to come up with a lot more agreements, because the leaderboards would basically be going through Facebook, I think.

I think Rovio’s idea is to hook up together groups of friends and, hopefully, promote situations where they are beating each others scores all the time, which becomes highly addictive. It becomes so involving that you are even willing to pay for powerups. For some time it worked, but my friends got tired. Mentioning AB is as exciting as Farmville to them. That’s how I ended up here and adding a bunch of unknowns in FB. Besides the cheating part, wOrld Tournament would seem scary to most, leading to a narrower consumer base and less profits. It’s a business after all! But It’s true the model is getting tired. Check the number of players per episode and you’ll see what I mean. What remains is us, the hardcore fans

Dear @amslimfordy and @dollarbill,

After the events of the past couple of weeks, and given the emerging trust issues affecting the tournament (in terms of scores derived from questionable techniques and other improper behaviour), I would like to formally propose a risk management system to try to redress the situation and restore faith in the leaderboard.

The starting point is that there is no need to policy everybody. After being here for a while, I think most players are a bit wacko, but overall honest in the scores they post. On this basis, I think we could put in place a system where, starting on Tuesdays, anybody listed in the top-3 of the leaderboard shall (as in they MUST) be required to:

1. Provide a detailed explanation of how the score was obtained (beyond the music that was playing in the background…).

2. Provide proof of such the score by means of video or a picture. Said picture should be taken of the entire screen and be taken right after the score is attained.

3. Failure to provide proof and/or explanation, or provide an answer to the questions by an admin, shall lead to the permanent removal of the score from the board.

I am sure there are other reasonable and not burdensome conditions that can be attached, but it has become hard to look at the board without severe questions arising as to the means in which many of those scores were obtained, if at all.

@congo, I am totally agree with this. Until there’s not an anti-cheat system, top scorers must have detailed explanation of their scores. And may be screenshots.
This is the reason I almost lost interest to post my scores.

Thats why I think an anti-cheat system is best thing for leaderborads.

@pocko, yes. One gets a bit tired of competing in these situations. I think there are two types of questions:

1. Whether the score exists (as opposed to be the result of somebody’s imagination or a typo).

2. Whether that score was achieved respecting the rules of engament (as opposed to cheating and recurring to forbidden techniques).

One easy way of dealing with problem No. 1 is to require the top scorers to become a FB friend of an admin or somebody in charge of policing the results. This one should be a piece of cake to implement and it allows for a real, objective control of the existence of the score.

The most difficult problem is No. 2. I thought of the picture/video requirement, but it may be easy to circumvent it. Any other ideas?

@congo there is still one problem, as the game and leaderboard was there very time ago, it will not be possible for the users who already got their scores and entered them in the leaderboard, to submit their screenshot at the time of scoring. Most of the angry birds players already may played every levels and so it is not possible for them to make a screenshot. But the idea is good for tournament scores and new levels updating to the game.

@congo @amslimfordy The video requirement may be a little much, as most people don’t even have the software to capture screen video. Most of them are not even free. Even then, I don’t ALWAYS record myself when playing, unless I am actively seeking a high score technique to share with the nest. That’s about it. On the other hand, some of the scores posted by some users will cause unrest until a video of a similar score is posted, by anybody. I think the typos, and imaginary scores are much more rare than actual scores obtained by the cheat, for the simple fact that one can provide proof of a picture, and they think that should be good enough to stay on top of the leaderboard. I’m not sure how many times we have gone through this, but I bet it is a bunch.

I think between our extremists here (by that, I mean our extremely talented legit players), we have an understanding of what is possible and what isn’t. That said, a screenshot would still be pretty good, since (if my understanding is correct) users with the infinite-cheat always display 99 of each PU?

@amslimfordy, that is true. Unfortunately, if you obtain the score with the Firefox cheat, you can open the game in another browser, e.g. IE or Chrome. Since the cheat does not work with the other browsers, your REAL number of power ups will be displayed, but the score that you obtained using the cheat will still be there. That makes things really difficult.

You’re a smart man, Bill. Like we’ve said before, this is a very challenging issue, but so long as the cheat exists, we are kind of at the whim of honesty and the ability to delete malicious scores. I would love for Rovio to just patch the entire thing, but what can you do?

Dear @dollarbill2208 and @amslimfordy. In my country we have a saying: The perfect is the enemy of the good. I agree that we cannot erradicate the problem. But I disagree that doing nothing would help. The basic suggestions abovefor the top three scores (friend requirement with an admin OR picture + decent explanation) could get rid of the most egregious situations and go a long way in restablishing trust.

I am in complete agreement, I could not figure out how so many people get high scores until reading this post. I have spent hours upon hours on level 1 just getting the score of 131850, and here all this time others use a cheat program.

What a waste of effort and time to cheat on a fun game, just so they can tell lies to their family and friends and feel good about themselves.

@congo i too agree with you, there must be a sufficient system to check what are legit?, and whats not? To be friends with admins is ok, so that the admins can know whether the user entered real scores, but still they can not know how the scores are obtained? Whether they used cheat etc. The picture is ok but in my opinion the users who got a score than a particular extend (which could be decided according to each level’s maximum without power up or something like that) had to provide a screenshot at the time of scoring

While i agree with the overall topic of trying to filter out false/cheat scores etc.. And do not mind being FB friends with all admins, my only objection would be that they are all better at the game than me so i would never get into the top 3 for the weekly scores and miss out on some free power-ups.

I guess I was a little naive to think there wouldnt be a cheat for AB-FB. I never even thought of googling it. But since most FB games can or have been hacked/cheated, it’s no suprise that AB-FB was.

I am going to propose something no one is going to like, not even myself.

Shutdown the Facebook Leaderboards.

Since there is a cheat for the AB-FB, people are going to use it. (case in point, Game Center).

Providing a screen capture of your score, to me, is not a valid proof of non cheating. It will just show a valid screen capture of your cheated score.

Becoming FB friends with the admins will also not work. The admins will just be able to see your score in the friend list. Again, no proof that a cheat was not used.

As we all know, there are sometimes when playing a level, regardless of the platform, where the user will get a “luck factor” and get a lucky bounce or some lucky destruction resulting in a much higher score than they previously had. All a cheater needs to do is copy and paste one of the numerous strats, claim they got the Luck Factor and got thier high score. Again, no proof of not cheating.

There is also an argument against the 99 power ups of each kind. First, they are purchaseable, so the use could claim they bought them legit. Second, all the user would have to do is use a few of each, or just not cheat up to 99. Again no proof of not cheating. (and since they are cheating, they can always get more for free)

And as others mentioned, doing a vid of their high score is not practical. User experience, software purchace, etc, or as bill stated, he does not vid every time.

So, unless Rovio comes out with a patch/fix for cheating, and real fast, I don’t really think there is any real way of determining if someone cheated. Yes, the rediculous scores are obvious, but other than that, not sure.

The great thing about this site is that it’s based on the honor system, it’s just sad that there are a few idiots out there that feel like they need to cheat to ruin it for all of us.

Hmmm… I think that would be a little rash. The admins trust the honest guys enough to make a legitimate stand against the suspected cheaters. But then again, I do realize that this is coming from ME, the Facebook leader, so my point of view may be a little bit biased on the matter. I’d really hate to see all that hard work go right down the drain.

Bill, (@dollarbill2208), you’re the reason I propose closing it down, your scores are so high, and all done legit, there is no way I will ever come close to them. Just kidding around with you bill. You’re scores are incredible and with all the walkthrough explanations and vids, I have no doubt that they are truely legit. It’s the other idiots out there that have to ruin the fun for all.

I would think that of all the people here, you would be one of the most upset with the cheats that are happening. You work hard to get your scores and to have some punk just invalidate your work by cheating, that has to be frustrating.

Yes, I also would hate to see all my hard work go down the drain, but unless some sort of fix can be done to prevent the cheaters from cheating, not sure really what can be done. And yes, most of us are honest but it’s apparent that to some, that doesn’t matter.

Whether the AB-FB boards are taken down or not, I will continue to play it. It’s still a fun game with fun levels.

I have come to embrace the cheat, and even use it myself. Even Slim has seen the work that I have done with it, in one of my rogue videos I had briefly posted. The thing I don’t like is when people post their cheat scores HERE, when it is plainly obvious that cheat scores are not accepted here. When your score is 20 to 30k above second place, don’t you think that’s just a little strange that nobody else but you has gotten scores this high, and that just maybe scores obtained with the cheat are not accepted here on the Nest?

I would prefer the leader board stays. It is helpful for coming up with the average score on a level. Some of us more average players find that the number to try and beat. Without some sort of benchmark, it’s hard to tell how you are doing. Having a leader board available for comparing has helped improve my game.

Since the beginning of this week, I get this message every time I quit a level in AB Friends: http://i.imgur.com/tExyJ.jpg
If I click on it, it says that I need to give my credit card or PayPal information, and they will not charge me at all, they just need it for verification purposes. And: “that is a completely free offer from Facebook”.

Do you know anything about it? It sounds very shady.

I’ve seen this ad millions of times on the sidebar. I do’t get why they need your credit card information to give you free stuff. Also, AB isn’t the only game that is being tortured by these ads. There are other games that have a similar offer.

My thoughts are the same as yours. The weirdest part is that it’s not just an ad on the sidebar, but it is built into the game/application. It even uses the same design elements. So Rovio has to know about it.

I saw that ad pop up in the same place. It does look like it may be a legit ad to encourage people to get some free powerups since it’s coming from within the game and not a secondary link (i.e. the sidebar). The reason they may be asking for your credit card without charging it would to make it easier in the future to purchase more power ups by having your card on file. If you do decide to take them up on their offer, you may want to monitor your credit card very closely, just in case.

You are exactly right. You alone had two top scores this week, out of several hundred players. 183k seems to be a little high for level 4 as well, Slim. I’m not going to flag the scores any more for this week, and I can’t say that the scores are indeed impossible, but I know they are pushing it. cc @amslimfordy.

My scores were true, and I got 181K in level 4 not 183K and 181K was 2nd top score.
Why didn’t you delete the 183K score?

Also, don’t forget that when top scorer does not give an explanation to their scores (and you had two last week), it raises eyebrows as to whether the score was obtained with the cheat. We really have no doubt that your 183k and 181k scores were obtained, but the “how” part was in question. You really do have to look it from our point of view. I always give my strategy. always, always, always.

Hey guys, I have been following your issues regarding power up cheats for a while, and though I do not have a facebook account myself, and cannot play, I think I have the beginnings of an idea that would at least be able to identify suspect scores. We need to petition Rovio to modify the scoring slightly, so that one point is added to the score each time a power up is used. This would provide a quick and easy method of identifying how many power ups were used on a particular level (unless the player used a multiple of ten), and would not make any significant difference to the score obtained on the level. What do you think?

It might work, IF it doesn’t tally up the power up score until the very end of the level. That way the user would not be able to manipulate it, because certainly they aren’t going to count every single click, are they?

Oh wait, there actually is a huge problem with that I just thought of. You see, a lot of the cheaters have this thing called an “autoclicker” which can click up to 100 times per second. Let’s say that it actually takes several minutes for the pigs to die, but eventually do. This is going to lead to another 30k bonus, and the scores could go infinite. So unless the power up counter could only go up to 10 and repeat, as in 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 and so on.

@burbman but listen to this. What if you have a system in place that counts the power ups that you used, but it stops at 3, and can’t go any higher? That way, the max score you can get will be xxx,xx3. This would work, and 3 would identify the score as one that has been cheated. 0, 1, and 2 are legit, and would explain the actual number of power ups that were used.

@dollarbill2208 This would work, but only if Rovio deems this to be a problem worth addressing, as it would require an allocation of resources that they may already have plans for. I of course still would like to be able to see the score obtained both with, and without power ups on each level, at least on ABO.

The best for Rovio’s interest would be to STOP the cheat completely! They are losing thousands of dollars, or more, with AB fanatics who could/would be buying the powerups. But why bother paying if they can get them for free AND without Rovio’s two-per game limitations? Perhaps the problem for us is that they are making too much money from other sources.

Another proposal, this time serious.
The best thing for protecting the leaderbord from cheaters is anti-cheat system, but we have not one. So what we can do?
First thing is stop posting high scores videos and strategies in the first days of tournament. Bill and Sheikhoo will continue to capture their videos but post the links lets say friday or thursday and keep their high scores in secret until then. Non power up videos are good.
Second thing is some of the admins or well trusted players to install that cheat and to experiment with it until we know what is possible and what is not.
After this we can know better who is cheating. Well, this will be not 100% accurate method, but is something we could do. Description of top scorer’s strategies to be required. And no pics. They are NOT proofs. I could always double my scores with Photoshop.

Is anyone else besides me growing weary of these tournament levels? Week in and week out, I have to play these silly things just to keep up with my top leaderboard position. Not to mention the homework of making new videos for new levels, because it seems the community has grown to somewhat expect them. I think it is time they scrapped the temporary weekly concept, and come up with something different. If the tournament levels would ever become permanent, then great, but this has run it’s course. I really don’t know how much longer I can keep this up.

We are up to 80 levels on the Tournament leaderboard, perhaps 50 of which are unique, and we can only play 4 of them right now. I don’t like it.

Yes, but it is probably making them a ton of money with the powerups. it has changed to the point where you can now also buy them in the Android (and I assume IOS) versions! The worst part is that I have less time than before. Perhaps I should focus on Green Day instead…

Did you have a problem with the Tournament scoreboard last week? I entered my scores but when I came on to enter this weeks, last weeks have disappeared!!

I didn’t make a note of them, as I believed once they were entered it would still be showing. Not much point entering them if they are going to be wiped out.

I didn’t know there was a ‘cheat’ for Facebook! But I do think people who use it shouldn’t post their scores on the leaderboards! I’ve also noticed some posting top scores and admitting they have used ‘Power Ups’….Totally bad form to my mind. Leaderboards should be ‘cheat & Power Up’ free. I’m also ‘rather suspicious’ of this weeks leader ‘d’. Nuff said…….

I post my non-PU scores on the leaderboard, but use PUs for my Tourney score against my friends. BTW, does using the “free” 6 birds in the Halloween challenge count as PUs? Some pretty high scores for PU-free players if that counts as a PU… Haven’t been even close to getting over 120 on challenge #3 w/o “help”. I’ll keep pluggng away but 160+ seems unreachable.

On Challenge #3, there are 6 piggies + 6 zombies (12 total x 5000 = 60K), and 4 birds (worth 10K each at best). That makes 100K w/o damage. There is not 60K+ damage to do.

@kelvarda, all high scores here are done with the aid of power ups. The Facebook version of Angry Birds was the original setting for power ups, as they came much much later on the mobile devices. With this said, power ups are a part of the game, and scores obtained with them are allowed on the Facebook leaderboards. But they AREN’T allowed on any of the other boards. It’s personal preference I guess, but most likely you will never come anywhere even close to a high score here, unless you use them. I’m just putting it out there, that it is not a sin to use your power ups and post your scores.

@amslimfordy it appears that a certain individual has taken over the leaderboards, and I think I remember us having the same problem with him before. I know that several of the scores, especially in the Golden Egg series have been maxed out, Total Destruction, by several users, but this user has posted scores several hundred points beyond the threshold.

Yes, this is a known glitch. Level 0 seems to have a few different choices. Luckily (for us) the score is not logged anywhere in your total.
