How to Backup and Sync Angry Birds Chrome Progress

There is no doubt that Angry Birds Chrome is awesome. There is one issue however, despite what most people think your progress is not stored in the cloud. Rather it’s stored locally in your browsers local storage directory. Below you’ll find the location of these directories and the requisite file you need to backup and/or transfer. Per our testing you can transfer your progress between the SAME browser back and forth between Mac, PC, and Linux. You CANNOT transfer from one browser to another though, so play in one browser and stick with it.

The location of the Local Storage directory depends on your platform (e.g. Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.), operating system, and the primary browser/version you’re playing Angry Birds Chrome in (yes, you can play AB Chrome in other HTML 5 compliant browsers, except those on mobile devices). This list is not exhaustive, but it should cover the most common browsers and operating systems. If there is something we’re missing feel free to leave a detailed comment below and we might be able to add it to the list.

If you like this, you may also be interested in our Angry Birds Chrome control guide.

Before you begin:

  1. If signed in, be sure to sign out of Angry Birds Chrome
  2. If open, close the browser you play Angry Chrome in. This will prevent the files from being locked.
  3. DON’T move the files listed below. Rather just COPY it to a backup directory — then if you’re wanting to transfer it to another computer — copy it to the respective directory on the other computer.

Chrome

Copy the “http_chrome.angrybirds.com_0.localstorage” file to a backup location or transfer it to another computer running Chrome in order to restore your progress. The “0” in the file name above may be different in your case. In most cases the location of this file is listed below:

Mac OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Local Storage/
Win XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Local Storage\
Win Vista or Win 7: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Local Storage\
Linux: ~/.config/google-chrome/Default/Local Storage/

Firefox 3.5+

I believe this should work in Firefox 3.5 and above (previous versions don’t fully support HTML 5, so Angry Birds Chrome won’t even run). Firefox stores all it’s local storage data in a single SQLite file called, “webappsstore.sqlite”. That means when you backup or transfer this file you’re also backing/transferring up anything else that might be stored in it, which you may or may not be okay with. In most cases the location of this file is listed below:

Mac OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/xxxxxxx.Default/
Win XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxx.Default\
Win Vista or Win 7: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxx.Default\

Safari

Safari handles local storage just like Chrome. Copy the “http_chrome.angrybirds.com_0.localstorage” file to a backup location or transfer it to another computer running Safari in order to restore your progress. The “0” in the file name above may be different in your case. In most cases the location of this file is listed below:

Mac OS X: ~/Library/Safari/LocalStorage/
Win XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\Safari\LocalStorage\
Win Vista or Win 7: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\Safari\LocalStorage\

Internet Explorer 9

IE 9 is a much different animal than the other browsers listed above. While I believe it is possible to backup your progress it’s not nearly as easy or straight forward. For that reason I highly recommend that you don’t use it unless you have to. IE 9 stores progress in an XML file inside the “DOMStore” directory. This directory is a hidden system directory, so even if you have “Show hidden files and folders” enabled it still will not be visible. For most people the only way to really find it is by searching one directory below for “angrybirds”. This search should bring up an XML file named something like, “chrome.angrybirds[1].xml” located in a randomly generated sub-directory. That is the file you want to copy, which you can do via the search pane or by right-clicking the file and selecting, “Open file location”.

To reiterate, I would navigate to the “Internet Explorer” directory listed below then search for, “angrybirds”. This should allow you to access the hidden file system and copy the XML file. Or you can make your life easier and use a different browser.

Mac OS X: N/A
Win XP: Don’t believe IE 9 is available for XP currently.
Win Vista or Win 7: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\LocalLow\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\DOMStore\[XXXXXXX]\

you can see it if you go to folder options and uncheck hide protected system folders

Yes, indeed you can, though I doubt most people have done this. Good tip though!

Why is Angry Birds Chrome awesome?

What about the Opera browser?

I wasn’t able to play Angry Birds Chrome in Opera 11.50, hence why I didn’t include instructions. Are you able to play in Opera?

XP does not have ie 9. Please update the post.

None of this seems to work in OS X Lion… I can’t find the Google/Chrome folders anywhere

Can you find the “Application Support” folder?

Sorry, I took so long to reply…
Yes and I found Applications Support. But there is no Google Chrome folder, there is Google and that just has random stuff in it.

In Mac OS X Lion 10.7.X the correct path is:
Macintosh HD/Users/User Name/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Local Storage/

Lion hides the ~/Library directory by default.

This above article will help you to access Library folder in Lion.

Many reports. Not sure what to tell you.

By juneapril

So you have to remember to back it up each time you play? I use Chrome.

If your browser is set to clear its cache on close, then yes. Otherwise, you can probably do like once a week or so.

By Bill

Be aware! Chrome(and Iron), and Firefox all use the cache as part of the game storage. So if you are going to backup the files listed, you also need to find and backup the cache files and folders. You cannot depend on just the files listed above for complete backups of your progress. Trust me, I know! I just lost all progress in Firefox because of a clearance setting I forgot to UNCHECK.

Odd. I haven’t had any issues.

By Zita

Might be a silly question but as a way to back the file up, can I email it to myself as an attachment?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

I mean, I guess, but it still involves you saving the original file somewhere.

Not sure where to put this, so as I’ve just backed my Chrome up, I’ll put it here:

This may be a stupid question, but what files do I need to copy to back up my PC progress (in case of accidental deletion or something!) I’ve found the Rovio files on my harddrive, but I’m not sure which ones are the important ones to copy. I’m using Windows 7

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

Settings and Highscores .lua files. We have the location described in most of the PC update posts. For example, Airfield Chase PC post

I hear my husband on the phone with Dell, and that word system restore. Am I going to be depressed that my progress in chrome is gone? Will it wipe out my progress in g+?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

A system restore may or may not delete your Chrome progress. If you have not restored yet, you can still go and backup your Chrome progress and save the file externally (for example, either to a flash drive or email it to yourself).

G+ progress is stored in the cloud, so that should remain untouched.

I can’t find my app data folder for chrome on my win 7.

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points

It is a hidden folder. Either enable the viewing of hidden folders, or manually enter it in the address bar.

I have Google Chrome. How do I copy the “http_chrome.angrybirds.com_0.localstorage” file to a backup location on my computer?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

The location is explained above, based on your OS.

By Jason Goldman

Thank you Amslimfordy – I see that. How do I open to the path to:

C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Local Storage\

on my PC? I have Windows XP.

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

Start by going to “My Computer” and opening folders from there. Some of the folders may be hidden, in which case you will need to manually type the next step in the address bar.

Okay, the files i have are these, but first i am running windows 7 and use mozilla firefox, i’m not sure where to look in and how do i back it up, just save it to a file in notepad? i also have php if that’s any better?

conduit common
extensions
add ons
cert8
chromeappstore
content prefs
cookies
cookies sqlite shm
cookies sqlite wal
places sqlite wal
places sqlite shm

and this will only save the game, right?? i don’t want all things on the net being saved on my computer, too much space it takes up.

Chrome succeeded in giving me another reason to hate them!!

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points

Depends on which browser you are using, but typically it is http_chrome.angrybirds.com_0.localstorage

I mentioned firefox, so i would go to…..http_firefox.angrybirds.com_0 localstorage??

is this going to save all activity or just angry birds, i don’t like un necessary stuff on my computer, that’s why i’m aksing and very lost and with what i just typed, i copy and search that, right?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points

That file should ONLY save your “Angry Birds Chrome” data. No other useless junk that I’m aware of.

not sure if this helps answering my question.

under mozilla-firefox-profiles, i have these two things listed, they are:

from there, i don’t know where to go, help?

ugh, they both have webbappstore, but not with sqlite at the end :/

It will save any data you have in the Chrome Web App Store, which is most likely just Angry Birds.

Rank: Champion with 3295 points

The file size is likely to be in kb (mine is) so that doesn’t really take up that much space compared to a hard drive. That should in theory save your progress so you don’t have to restart every time! :)

Rank: Deputized with 180 points

it was pretty small, i saved the bigger file :) hopefully correctly.

well, not sure how to save it, so i did it with notepad and told it save to desktop, will that work??

Rank: Champion with 3295 points

I’d just copy and past it from it’s current location into another location, that way, you can just copy the whole file back as it is :)

Rank: Deputized with 180 points
By maryspitfire (@maryspitfire)

it won’t give me that option, i wonder if i can then drag it to the desktop??

ooppss, sorry, now for my next question on this, you save the file, i shut down computer for the night, go back in and log in, how do i get it to read what i saved, i import it from the desktop??

Rank: Deputized with 180 points
By maryspitfire (@maryspitfire)

okay, now i have a question relating to this, now that i saved it in a notepad file, i kept playing the game, logged out of chrome ab, got out of the browser, went to look for the file, thinking it would be there, and it’s not, not anything even close now…*sigh*

will the one on my desktop keep updating then?? if not, i quit chrome ab

Rank: Deputized with 180 points
By maryspitfire (@maryspitfire)

Well, i have to use a different browser now for this because as i said before, this did something and won’t save anything under this:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxx.Default\

i deleted what i saved on the desktop, tried again, thinking that would work, but it hasn’t, what happened here?? someone please respond.

i’ve asked all my questions here on what to do once a file is saved, I REALLY need help here
