@furfeather – the boost pads are those arrows in the middle of the road that give you a speed boost when you drive over them. Look out for them on Seedway and Rocky Road, they are very obvious square pads.
@Kathy – For challenge levels you must deliberately hit ice blocks or other types of blocks, or perform various driving tasks. There is little penalty to ramming the blocks if you hit them at a glancing angle, i.e., swerve before you hit or drive ‘sideways’ ala powersliding/drifting. If you ram the block with the back edge of the kart you take little damage and speed loss.
If the game keeps telling you “fail” it means you failed for the primary objective of the game mode. In Beat the Fuse you must try and hit the finish line before the bomb explodes and that means a kart with high top speed and acceleration. The former to reach the finish line ASAP, the latter to recover from impacts and loss of optimal driving line. Try to steer for the inside of every corner. You are of course distracted by all the blocks placed on the inside of the corners but you can still hug the wall or use Red’s special power to blast through the blocks without major speed loss.
However for your case, completion of the challenges actually does over-rule the requirement to actually, finish on time, because even if you fail the level but accomplish all the driving objectives, you are allowed to progress to the next Challenge stage like nothing happened. This will be crucial to remember once you get up to Challenge Level 5 or so, where there are some very peculiar objectives like “finish without your kart” which involves totaling the vehicle just before the finish and ejecting the bird/pig over the finish line. I don’t know of a way to more easily deliberately eject from the vehicle yet!
And @all this is what I’m talking about when I mention setup an optimal driving line through the course for maximum speed. Steering for the insides of the corner reduces the driving distance to the finish line. Also make use of the camber of the track.
I like a kart that has maximum top speed and minimal handling so I can drive with slip angle all the way down – so called ‘drifting’ does increase your score tremendously, useful for Facebook bragging rights. I don’t actually call this “drifting” because in this game you can’t control power application nor can one drive with ‘opposite lock’ in an actual drift machine. It’s more like vintage motorcycle speedway where riders slide their way around the track. Back in the day of bias-ply tyres it was considered optimal to have an “optimal blend of grip and slip!”. Hence, save Bird Coins, upgrade top speed and acceleration to save some coin in the early stages :)
Btw, if you don’t want the score to be posted on Facebook then simply disable Facebook sync in the main menu options. Easy peasy :)
A rather length draft of my gameguide is ready for posting but I want it to be vetted by @Birdleader first.
