It sounds like you’re on the right track, to me. On my way up to level 160, there were several periods of time where I wasn’t getting 80% of the total sparks (and I don’t recall EVER getting 100%; my high score at level 160 is around 277,000, IIRC).

Once you get up to level 160, you can “relax” a bit and focus more on targets than on finishing. I don’t think missing out on 100 or so sparks on a daily basis is going to make or break you anyway, ya know? At that rate, it would take almost a month for you to miss out on a single 5% promotion.

Personally, I was promoting the live event bonus bots when promotions were first introduced, but I switched to promoting my best Spark Run bots pretty quickly, and I’ve simply been mostly using those same bots in the live events. If an event allows a single bot, I’m generally using Ratchet (because he’s good against both Boss Pig and Unicron, in addition to generally being able to destroy all targets), and settling for the 140% bonus. If two bots are allowed, it’s Blaster and Ratchet (280%) for me. That’s generally been good enough for me to get enough tokens to win whatever new TF is being offered, or to overpower a single bot if there’s not a new one.

I should add that I DO spend gems on a daily basis. How many I spend depends on how close I am to certain token thresholds as I approach the end of the day, and also depends on whether or not I can snipe a better slot on the leaderboard for that day. I would say I almost always spend the 10 and 20 gems for 4 or 8 additional runs, and it’s 50/50 whether I spend another 40. It’s rare, but I’ve spent 60, 80, 100, even multiple 100s, when I’ve been in range of the 500 token and 750 token thresholds and/or 1st place.

My gem supply has remained between 3000 and 4000 for several months now. I do not buy gems with real money; they all come from the three mission nodes, the random chests that appear on the map, and from steel crates. I’d guess that I’m getting around 150 per day that way. (I haven’t been able to give or receive “thank you” gems/coins from facebook friends for a while.)

Finally, now that I have Blaster fully promoted (it just happened last week), I AM going to start saving up spark to promote live event bonus bots when appropriate. If I can spend enough sparks to make my second bot give me more than 140%, and if the prizes available in that event are worth it to me, then I’ll do it.
