Okay, here are some numbers- at least enough to give a high level picture.
I have Geraldine, a 5-star red bird. She was at level 26. It costs 100 gold to feed a bird to her. Feeding her a 2-star bird gives her 14% of a level.
To level her 5 times, to level 31 would take this:
(Around 7 2-star birds per level) x (5 levels) x (100 gold coins per bird) =
TOTAL: 3500 gold coins

I also had Margaret, a 3-star red bird at level 1. I fed her 1-star and 2-star red birds until she was level 20, evolved her, and fed her to Geraldine. This gave Geraldine 5 levels. It costs 40 gold coins to feed a bird to Margaret. I fed 16 red birds to Margaret to get her to level 20 (9 1-star birds, 7 2-stars). It cost 100 gold coins to feed Margaret to Geraldine, and 200 red evolution material to evolve Margaret. So…
((16 birds total) x (40 gold coins per bird)) + 100 =
TOTAL: 740 gold coins + 200 evolution material
***IMPORTANT NOTE: When Margaret was level 20, but not evolved, I dragged her up to the box to feed her to Geraldine but did not go through with it. Geraldine would have only gained 1 level! But with Margaret evolved, Geraldine gained 5!

I have also done the same process by feeding 3-star birds to 4-star birds. They level up even more quickly! They gain around 7 levels per evolved (level 20) 3-star bird instead of only 5.
Extra bonus, I had a 3-star black bird that was XP Shiny. I did the process on him and then fed him to a 4-star black bird that was somewhere in the late 20 levels – maybe 28ish and he leveled to 39.

BOTTOM LINE: Much more cost efficient to level up and evolve 3-star birds and feed them to 4&5-star birds than to feed the 4&5-star birds directly. But definitely evolve the 3-star birds first!
