WWWwwwHhhhhhiiiiiinnnnneeeee -
My English teacher is out for the year, and I found out that the long-term substitute is the one I hate the most. My least favorite class with my least favorite teacher, the next 2 months should be fun....
-
Aww @blahalb09 that's no fun; ( maybe you could learn to like the sub for the sake of learning?
Im surprised acactually that you don't like English. That was my favorite subject. .English is the most complex language to learn i found it interesting. I also took Latin which made it that much more interesting; ) chin up your a smart kid you'll do fine:) -
-
@Kathy -- Tues is my golf day, so I am gone most of the day. A little tired, but otherwise fine.
@blahalb09 -- I forget, what is your most favorite class? If your English class is mostly about reading and writing essays, well, reading is one of my most favorite hobbies, so being assigned to read a book, has always been like an assignment to take a vacation from homework. This included reading Russian stories in Russian when I was taking Russian.
Writing essays was never one of my favorite subjects, and I didn't do well in that in college. However, it is very important for whatever field you are interested in. For example, I'm a scientist, and writing persuasive papers and grant proposals is very important. When I was in high school, the thing I hated most was speaking in public, and rather stupidly, I thought a scientist didn't need to do that. WRONG! As a scientist, your most 3 important abilities are 1) value of your scientific work, 2) ability to write a proposal that wins money so you can work, 3) ability to speak publicly about your work in a clear and persuasive manner.
So, try to learn as much as you can in your English class. I also hope that using correct grammar is important, so learn it. -
@rat9 @burpie @stocktoad @mvnla2 @kathy All of you replied to my DZ-22 posts, so if any of you were interested, I finally finished my test. Full results posted on the walkthrough. Nutshell: Unless I'm missing something, the 1-bird shot isn't possible on PC v1.6.0. Even better: If I had tried to replicate @e-star 's video at the start, I could have learned that in ten minutes. :/
Oh yeah, one more thing. When you guys get @ notifications in this specific forum, are you seeing them in the notifications section of your profile, where the ones from the rest of the site go, the forum-specific menu accessed from clicking your username at the top of this forum page, or sent via email? Still trying to figure out where mine from this forum are hiding. -
@mvnla2 happy to hear all is well:) and your soo right about the importance of English and reading. I myself am an avid reader, or I WAS until AngryBirds was discovered; (
Russian huh? Im impressed; )
@Kelani I get my notifications in my email. .I uncheck them when i go to sleep so the dinging doesn't wake me.
I'll have to go check out your conclusions in DZ ;) thanks for the heads up! -
@mvnla2 I've read grant proposals that would make your eyes explode. Zero regard for accepted spelling, grammar or syntax. A few were even accepted! I'm afraid grammar is becoming a lost cause, but cheers to you for fighting the trend.
@Kathy OK, that makes sense. I think. I get a generic "so and so commented on your bookmarked discussion" email for every comment posted here, but not any specific notice in profile-notifications when someone uses @kelani like I get if you type that in the new forum or walkthrough pages. -
@kelani -- I have e-mail notifications on, so whenever someone @mentions me (mentions me by @MVnLA2) I get an e-mail. I think if you click on the star, and have e-mail notifications on, you get e-mail whenever someone makes a comment in this forum (which can be a huge number). Not sure if they appear in the notifications under your name. That number seems to be different if you are on the main site or in the old forum.
@Kathy -- I had to take one foreign language to get my BS, and pass a test 2 foreign languages to get my PhD. May not be required now. I can't speak either now. : ( -
@Kelani -- Interesting. : ( What field were these grant proposals in? Gaah! Spelling is not that difficult if you use spell-checker. I do so religiously, because I'm lousy at spelling. I've retired, so no longer fighting the trend, at least not in professional life.
-
Lol @mvnla2 I had to take at least one foreign language class for high school. .I tried French but couldn't rrrroll my tongue correctly. .Spanish mehh was boring so loving the English language i took latin which i aced because fortunately there wasn't much required speaking it was more the structure of the words. I can't remember much of it at all now:/
-
Im of to fling take care everyone ;)
OB a PigKiller to go please:)
BBFNIMCBLIDKBPW -
@mvnla2 Shto dyelyat? Spell check is fine if you have sum glue how two make shura it rely fixes your spelling. ;-) I can't tell you how many no longer have that clue.
PoKAH!
-
@mvnla2 I have the star clicked, but turned email notify off for now, since I can see the same info (and protect my inbox) by looking in the [Discussions, Inbox, Username] menu at the top of this forum. If I click my username, I have [Notifications Discussions Comments] tabs. Comments has an entry for every message posted here, but Notifications has the same thing; e.g. your 9:29 post to kathy and blahalb09 is there, even though I'm not mentioned. :) Hope that makes sense.
One NSF proposal was from a chemist at Duke. Her team wanted to study some esoteric effects of long-term aldehyde & metalloid pollution on a local town. She wasn't stupid, rather, a victim of too much instant messaging. The proposal contained things like: irregardless, betwixt, residents of this backward community, and I kid you not, the salutation: "Hi!" in a cover letter. She also specifically requested all experts over age 60 be excluded as reviewers because "Frankly, we feel colleagues of advanced age will be too old-fashioned to appreciate our urgency in determining the extent of said enviromental (sic) impact."
It's Duke, so naturally it was funded, although they did tell her quite forcefully what she could do with that expert exclusion request. :)
I was always the go-to proofreader for everyone in the pre-spellcheck days. Just my luck, instead of having something useful like a superhuman math ability, I get the talent of being able to speed read, spell words and learn languages.
You said you're retired, if it's not too personal, what was your field? -
@ABcrazy -- OK, I'm tired so couldn't read all of your message. What is "Shto dyelyat" and "PoKAH"? Even the words that I can understand don't all pass my spellcheck.
@Kathy -- I also took Latin in HS, I think it gives you a really good basis for understanding other Romance languages, and English grammar. I wonder if it is still taught anywhere?
-
Lol @mvnla2 ..@ABCrazy explain please? Or is your forehead hitting your keyboard?
And [email protected] Latin is a very good base for the structure of English and hmm grammar I never really saw itv as a grammar lesson, but i suppose ..I'm thinking is not still taught in school today, maybe college?
I gotta say good night now. .to lazy to fetch an emoticon soo just plain old good night
Take care everyone.
*Places Flashlight in kimmiecv special safe for later inspection* don't worry Pahtnah it's not too banged up. .the flingin has been slow goin' ((((((hugs)))))
;) all is same old same old here .. hope your busy workdays are almost done. -
@Kelani -- Sent you a PM. I'm good at grammar, but not spelling. Also pretty good at writing persuasive text and good paragraphs, when I need to.
-
@AngryBirdsSpaceMaster -- Did your app launch today? Please remind me what it's called.
-
Sorry @mvnla2 @kathy "Shto dyelyat'' and 'PoKAH'! Were my attempt to phonetically spell out a couple of simple Russian greetings. Shto dyelyat is akin to 'How's it going? Or What's happening?
PoKAH is like 'Bye'!
If I was really on my game I would have figured out how to put it in Cyrillic.. But then my forehead really would be hitting the keyboard.
Nite all! :-) -
Wow, @Kelani. That was pretty dumb of her to actually use "Hi!" as her opening salutation! With the added grammar mistakes, you must've placed a huge REJECT stamp on that proposal! The nerve of her saying she didn't want anyone over 60 to be a reviewer. This brings back some vivid memories of the cover letters and resumes I've had to review in the past!
I receive the same notifications that you do, whenever there's a new comment here in the BP. It's automatically generated even though we're not @mentioned specifically, because we have the star at the top highlighted. Hope that makes sense.
@ABcrazy, I thought you were trying to pull an April Fool's prank on us! LOL
-
Just read @Kelani about you being the go-to proofreader. I did it professionally for many years, and like yourself should've concentrated more on my math skills than being able to correct grammar, spell, and write! So now, whenever my niece has a report to turn in for one of her college classes, she asks me to help. It feels good when she gets an A on those papers!
-
Goodmorning all!
@mvnla2, they still teach Latin here in Holland. At least the gymnasia do. Early on we were required to study six languages simultaneoulsy: Dutch, English, French, German, Latin and ancient Greek. 30 years later it still gives me the shivers when I think about it.
@Kelani, I can't remember answering any questions about DZ-22 but I added a comment in the walkthrough.
One word: Bluestacks.
Two words: More coffee!
BBFNIMCBLIDK -
Oh dRATs! I missed April fools day.
-
@mvlna2 No launch. Apple messed something up REALLY bad and it might not be out until tomorrow (the 3rd).
-
Good morning all happy HumpDay!! Lol @sweetp! !
Have a fantabulous flinging day everyone:) -
@SweetP All is well, thanks for asking. I hope you have a good time on your road trip!
@AngryBirdsSpaceMaster I understand your disappointment but this will not go down in history as one of Apple’s REALLY bad mistakes ;-)
@Rat9 The important thing is that you're here NOW on page 2014. Have some Spaceballs: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeZ9HhHU86o

Oh, and good morning Kathy! Sorry, I already had a comment window open when you posted! -
Just a question, was the announcement of Flappy Bird to be released again real or an April Fools Joke? (Not into Angry Flappy Birds! Of course, but STILL imagining...)
-
@SeasonsKing That was a joke.
-
@SweetP -- You're link to ABSM's app didn't work for me, and a tad late to be an April Fools joke. But we now know it's not out yet.
@Burpie -- Learning 6 languages at once would be more than enough to guarantee that I couldn't speak or write any one of them. There was one year when we had 3 languages in succession, I think probably Latin, French, and Spanish. I keep thinking that now that I'm retired (and living in southern CA), I really should learn Spanish. The languages I took the most were Russian (several years) and German (1 year), but the emphasis was on reading and writing, not speaking, especially since I had to pass written tests on technical articles written in those languages. Can't speak either, and I'm back to reading Russian letter by letter, with difficulty. If I can get all the letters, so I know what the word sort of sounds like, I might be able to guess the meaning, but more likely not.
I can sometimes bulldoze my way through museum placards using a general knowledge of foreign languages, but do much better if they are translated. : D -
@mvnla2 My grades were lousy. Later I transferred to a regular high school where they didn’t offer classical languages and I could quickly ditch German. I wanted to keep French but they didn’t offer it in combination with physics, so I ended up with just Dutch and English in my final year.
Maths, physics, chemistry, etc were more my thing… pick up a text book any day before the final exam and get a passing grade. That lazy mentality also got me though college.
I had the opportunity to travel in Russia a few years ago. I learned the Cyrillic alphabet to decipher signs. D-O-S-T... ooh look, it’s a statue of Dostoyevsky! (My pride was immediately replaced by embarrassment; I needed a sign to tell me who it was!) By now I’ve forgotten half of the alphabet. Half of the Greek alphabet, too. And yet, I do remember song lyrics, addresses, phone numbers and other trivia from that era.
One of my long term goals is to read A la recherche du temps perdu in the original. I hope I still can ;-) -
@burpie -- Are you sure? I meant this link
http://www.thereporter.com.au/news/flappy-birds-re-release-confirmed-dong-nguyen/2214886/
It looks too soon to be an April Fools Joke. :P
I also watched a disturbing video about Peanut Butter and Jelly. O.O -
@Burpie -- When I was taking Russian in college, they would assign reading short stories by Dostoyevsky, etc. as homework. One of my favorite assignments, same as being told to take an hour break from studying. My all-time favorite was the assignment, equivalent to a lab class, to visit the art museum every Fri! Can't believe some people passed up that golden opportunity.
@Kelani -- Never been a professional proof-reader / editor, but certainly learned a lot from them over the years. My great triumph was winning an argument with a technical editor who claimed that it was never proper to use the phrase "due to." Turns out their is a proper use of it per the Oxford English dictionary, and I had used it correctly (probably the only time I did). I frequently use it improperly, at least according to the grammar rules of 20 years ago. -
@SeasonsKing , I don't see any mention of Rovio in that article. Thank goodness!
@Mvnla2, I'm a big fan of Dostoyevsky's work. And Gontsjarov, Gogol, etc. Somehow not Tolsoy though. Oh, Nabokov's early stuff was in Russian. Solzhenitsyn. What a joy it must be to read those authors in their original form!
What is translation? On a platter
A poet’s pale and glaring head,
A parrot’s speech, a monkey’s chatter,
And profanation of the dead.
Nabokov.
@Kelani You learned Portuguese from 8 exchange students? Forget about Angry Birds and write the script for Adam Sandler's next movie :-) -
Our app will be launching in the next four hours. As long as Apple doesn't mess something ELSE up.
Read more about the technical difficulties here:
http://unspokennews.com/reasons-comics-experiences-technical-difficulties-delays-release/ -
@burpie Hmm. If I edit the 8 male exchange students to female, and replace learning Portuguese with...*cough* something else. I'd have a movie, all right, but probably not one Adam Sandler would appear in. :)
Yeah, the guys were supposed to speak only English while here, but that made them start forgetting Portuguese. So I extorted a pretty sweet deal out of that. I'd help them circumvent the rule by teaching me their language, in exchange, they'd let me tag along when they went out with a pack of cute high school girls. At 13, that was like winning the lottery. -
@AngryBirdsSpaceMaster -- Your link to UnspokenNews times out.
Please let us know when your app is out. -
@mvnla2 Yeah grammar rules are relaxing quite a bit, and I'm glad--to a point. 25 years ago, a teacher screamed at me for starting a sentence with 'And', so I vowed never to do it again. At some point, that rule died, but I still cringe when I see or do it. Darn teachers damaged my brain. Isn't it fun when you beat a pretentious jackass as his own game? I've never heard anything about 'due to' being wrong, unless he meant to start a sentence, which is clunky, but still OK. Maybe he was thinking of using 'on account of' to mean because.
-
@AngryBirdsSpaceMaster -- So who's the editor of UnspokenNews? Sounds like it might be you??? Are you sure the website is accessible to the general public?
-
@Kelani You can't start a sentence with "And"?
And God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. -
Hey everyone:) OB I'll have a PigKiller please ;)
@Kelani @Burpie you can't start a sentence with And:/unless it comes after a previous statement and is an addition to the subject. .Unless of course your God then you can do whatever you want. Heehee
@AngryBirdsSpaceMaster your link above must have technical difficulties cuz i can't get it to work:(
