Angry Birds Star Wars 2: The Lowdown on Telepods

Without question, Angry Birds Star Wars II is full of new and unique gameplay that makes it one of the best games of the year. It doesn’t stop there though, as you can now zap new characters right into the game using something called TELEPODs. This mean that if you don’t like your character lineup you’ve been given for a particular level, don’t worry, swap them out! With the TELEPODs technology and “Character Swaps”, you can now set your own attack lineup! This feature has actually been requested for years in the Angry Birds community, and it’s interesting to see how Rovio has included it.

What Are TELEPODs? How Do They Work?

In the most basic of terms, TELEPODs are small figurines or action figures. They are sold with a small clear stand that has a magnifying glass built in. On the bottom of the figurine is a unique QR-code.

When you want to use a TELEPOD, click the “T” button in the upper-left corner of the level screen. A pop-up will instruct you to place the figurine on the stand, and position the stand over the front-facing camera of your device. Then… BOOM! Like magic, that figurine will take the place of the existing character in the slingshot!

Also, a small “T” will appear in the corner of that character’s button in the Character Swap Bar. We will talk more about in-app character swaps below.

Angry Birds Star Wars 2 Telepods Icon in Player Selection

Rules and Restrictions

No good feature comes without rules.

Foremost, you cannot change your allegiance. That is, bird-side TELEPODs can only be used in bird-side levels, and likewise for the pork-side. Even though **spoiler alert** Anakin becomes evil, you can’t trade out his Pod Racer character with a much more powerful Sith Apprentice TELEPOD.

Next, you cannot use the same TELEPOD twice in a single attempt. So if you start with a level with three Qui-Gon Jinn in the lineup, you cannot use TELEPODs to use three Obi-Wan Kenobi. You may use multiple different TELEPODs to change the lineup, however. So instead of three Qui-Gon Jinn, you can use one Obi-Wan Kenobi, one Podracer, and one C-3PO for example.

Note: If using in-app character swaps (more below), this restriction is lifted: You can use the same character swap multiple times in a single level.

The final significant restriction is that TELEPOD data require an Internet connection. This makes sense to help prevent fraudulent use of this technology. If you are not connected to the Internet, you cannot “zap in” your TELEPOD. If you lose Internet after importing your TELEPOD character, you may use it (with the above restrictions) without needing to re-import until you close and re-open the game.

How Do I Get TELEPODs?

TELEPODs are made by Hasbro and available at most major retail stores, such as Walmart and Amazon. They come in packs of two or more, sometimes random and sometimes as part of specific sets. If you want to collect all 32, it takes quite a bit of time. But if you are hunting for specific characters, this list may help you. An asterisk (*) denotes that the specified character can only be found in that specific set. (Special thanks to @SnTrooper.)

  • Star Destroyer Set: Darth Vader(*), Droideka(*), Padme Amidala(*), Jedi Youngling(*), Captain Panaka(*), Zam Wesell(*), Darth Sidious, Stormtrooper, Anakin Skywalker Podracer, Luke Skywalker Jedi
  • Death Star Trench Run Set: TIE Fighter Pilot(*), Luke Skywalker Pilot
  • Endor Chase Set: Biker Scout(*), Luke Skywalker Endor
  • Battle of Geonosis Set: Battle Droid(*), Mace Windu
  • Bounty Hunters Set: Jango Fett(*), Obi-Wan Kenobi
  • Duel with Count Dooku Set: Count Dooku(*), Anakin Skywalker Padawan
  • Darth Vader Pig Carrying Case: Chewbacca(*)
  • Jedi vs. Sith Multi-Pack: Darth Maul(*), Qui-Gon Jinn(*), Darth Sidious, General Grievous, Yoda, Anakin Skywalker Padawan
  • Miscellaneous 2-Packs: Anakin Skywalker Sith Apprentice, Boba Fett, Jar Jar Binks, R2-D2, Princess Leia, Han Solo, C-3PO are only available in these randomly paired 2-packs.

What About In-App Character Swaps?

Angry Birds Star Wars 2 Wattos Shop All Characters Qui-Gon JinnCharacter Swaps are the only “Power Ups” in Angry Birds Star Wars II. In addition to physical TELEPODs, Character Swaps can be earned and/or purchased in-game.

By completing certain achievements in-game, you will earn Bird Credits or some number of Character Swaps. As we said above, in-game Character Swaps can be used without some of the restrictions of TELEPODs.

Bird Credits are your in-app currency. Credits are earned through normal gameplay, but can also be purchased from Watto’s Shop. Prices are 150 credits for $1.99, 400 for $4.99, 1000 for $9.99, 2250 for $19.99, 6000 for $49.99, and 15000 for $99.99. (Worried? Be sure to see our post about restricting In-App Purchases.)

If you want to purchase in-app Character Swaps, you have a few choices. There are always some characters “on sale” for heavily reduces prices. There are also a few cleverly named packs, created and compiled by Rovio. But most likely, you’ll be interested in purchasing an individual character.

Even here, you have options. Once you find the character you want, you may purchase 10, 30, 100, or unlimited usages. Note that the credit cost varies by character. Some are quite cheap, such as 10 Obi-Wan Kenobi for 300 credits. Some are costly, such as Darth Vader for 3500 credits (the Force is strong with him).

Interested? Here’s Some Jedi Training

So, we got your attention now, did we? Well, we’re going to give you some tricks and tips about using this technology.

First and foremost, every normal level can 3-starred without the use of Swaps. Our walkthroughs are living proof of that.

Next, not all levels will benefit from Swap technology. Indeed, some levels are set up with such a specific strategy in mind that the starting lineup is as good as any.

Now, let’s assume you have a level with a couple lowly Qui-Gon Jinn. Nothing against him, but he’s not particularly strong. At the least, you can swap out Qui-Gon for Jedi Luke, whose lightsaber is much stronger and lasts longer. If you are only attacking for brute force, Chewbacca has a lot of force! If you need to attack a high structure, Leia’s pulling and Padme’s pushing tractor beams will bring it tumbling down. And if the attack needs to go a long way through a lot of debris, Mace Windu’s boomerang lightsaber will slice through blocks like butter.

On the Pork Side, most characters are already quite strong. However, a few stand alone in terms of their powers. Darth Vader and Anakin Sith Apprentice are remarkably strong with the Force, able to throw nearby blocks great distances. If a lightsaber attack is needed, Darth Maul has two and General Grievous has four! And Darth Sidious’ lightning hands are extremely useful against metallic blocks and chains.

If you’re not planning to use swaps for high scores, remember that they have another use: Unlocking reward levels!

Without spending credits, it’s possible to unlock reward levels for the following characters, using the specific swaps given by achievements:

(For the birds, level B2-10 is a good option to maximize score. Use the power on the left helicopter, while throwing the bird into the lower pigs. This works for all three characters.)

Mace Windu: You’re given a bunch of these guys, so it should be easy to unlock his level.

Padme Amidala: You have less than Mace, but still more than enough to unlock the level.

Jedi Youngling: This is the first challenge, as you’re only given three, there’s no room for failure. I did this on B2-10, you will get enough points in three attempts as long as you don’t fail the level (split into the helicopter and lower pigs). It’s okay to use other birds to clean up if the younglings don’t pop all the pigs.

You’re also given Captain Panaka and Anakin Skywalker Jedi Padawan, but seemingly not enough to unlock their levels, as the score requirement is too high. (If you figure out how, please tell!)

For the Pork side:

Zam Wesell: I messed this one up! Like the younglings, you only have three chances, which is just enough. I did this on P1-3 (pull the magnet down). Unfortunately, one of my attempts didn’t do enough destruction, and I was unable to beat the rest of the birds with the other pigs. You may want to look for a more reliable level. (But if I had beaten the level, there would have been enough points here)

Darth Vader: Vader needs a lot of points (500k), but you also have a lot to use. I did this on P2-1, just throw straight ahead, activate, and watch stuff break. Clean up with Maul if needed.

TIE Fighter Pilot: You have lots of these guys, just shoot the wood holding the top magnet on P1-19 and you should have no problem even if you mess up a few times.

Anakin Episode III: You don’t unlock these guys until you have 20 stars for Pork reward, so you have do the others first. Same strategy as Darth Vader, but you have less to use.

These levels are just suggestions, please go ahead and let us know if you find better ones!

Oh and of course, you can spend your credits in the shop to buy swaps unlock more levels, but that’s up to you. I’m personally going to save them and maybe unlock permanent Darth Vader usage in the future.

I think B2-20 is a very good level to get good score on the unlock the reward levels.

Rank: Champion with 3100 points
By zlyeptitsy (@zlyeptitsy)

I’d adopted a similar strategy myself before seeing this post. P2-1 is ideal for the Porkside, but B2-10 isn’t actually great for the Bird-side, as it’s too easy to screw up and fail to clear the level (and thus lose all prospective points.) However, I have yet to find a more reliable high-point-value Bird-side level…

I understand your reluctance to spend your points, but some characters, particularly Captain Panaka, are just ridiculously cheap in the store (you can’t afford 100 credits for 10 lives?) so there’s no reason to hold off.

By Flint

P2-8 is perfect for Wesell. Just pull the big block with chain attached. The floating platform will destroy left tower, ~45k points. Destroy right tower with Maul, repeat.

Why 4 times? 1x permanent is permanent right?

Rank: DaBomb with 335 points

So…it appears to be impossible to just end up with one of each telepod, what with certain figures only available in special packages. My question is this, if I happened to have two telepods for the same character, is it possible to import one of them into a level, then import the other for the next shot, or is a telepod a telepod? I guess what I am asking is if the QR code on the bottom is unique to each individual figure, or if it is the same across all copies of the same character?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points

When you load a TELEPOD, you have unlimited uses of that character, subject to a few restrictions. These include using them no more than once per try, and that the unlimited use is time-sensitive before you have to physically “load” the TELEPOD again.

The character reload is really annoying. It actually makes me want to ditch the game. I mean, you should only have to load a character once and be done. My tablet has a terrible camera and has a hard time finding the QR code

By Alex Porges

Understood, but once you enter in that unique code, it should be permanent. Like I said, my tablet’s camera is not that great and it takes some manipulation for the code to be read. Its a really cool idea whose implementation sucks.

Honestly, they should make this game $10 and make it so you can use all the characters through some unlocking action. I believe someone said the correct thing in a previous post that this is a $.99 that turns into a $60 venture quickly.

@amslimfordy,
Being an Android user it appears we have to be quite lucky to have a phone/device that supports telepods. Out of curiousity as to how they worked, I went out an purchased a 2 pack of telepods. My phone was NOT listed on Hasbro’s site as being supported. If I counted correctly there are only 25 currently supported. There are probably hundreds of android based devices.
But being curious, just had to try and no the telepods didn’t work.

You (or any one at the Nest) wouldn’t have any insight as to when/if support for other devices will come. And yes, I have sent Rovio an email asking about this.

If telepods don’t work in SW2, the i’m guessing they won’t be supported in AB Go either.

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

@sparty83 I actually think Hasbro might be a better contact for this question than Rovio. As you suspected, no, we don’t have any insider info as to future support for TELEPODs.

I agree that there are dozens of Android devices and only a small handful are supported according to Hasbro. Why this is, I haven’t the foggiest. I confess that I’m not very knowledgeable about the distinctions between Android devices that would render reading a QR-code as impossible.

And yes, I would agree with your speculation: Lack of support for SW2 would suggest lack of support for Go.

Rank: Sling God with 33610 points
By sparty83 (@sparty83)

slim,
I guess i figured the ability to read the codes from the cam would be a function of the app and not of the telepod.

My phone does have a front facing cam (along with the main one on the back). I have a qr code reader app and it works with both cams. I tested this prior to contacting Rovio. Based on your suggestion, I have contacted Hasbro on this.

I am not holding out much hope in either case. But on the positive side, I do have some AB:SW2 telepods that are NIB, who knows, maybe someday they may be a collector item.

Rank: Out of this World with 2840 points
By TNM (@razorblood)

Seems strange. The best thing I could think of would be not a good enough quality, but because the QR render app works with both then it can’t be. If it wasn’t listed as supported then I suppose that’s why.

Rank: Sling God with 33610 points
By sparty83 (@sparty83)

@razorblood, I knew going in that my phone did not support telepods. Since there are so many android devices, I guess I was sort of hoping that the list was incomplete and that somehow my phone would work. I’m a little bummed that I can’t use them but I’m also optimistic that in the future I may (key word MAY) be able to use them.

Major update:
My phone DOES work with telepods.
Last night when I was trying it, I was in my rec-room. I was using no natural sunlight, just incandesent light bulbs. I know that lighting has an effect on reading the codes with the phone. I thought the room was lit up enough since I could read the codes with my qr reader app.
This morning, I tried again with plenty of natural sunlight streaming into the family room. And BINGO! my phone was able to read the codes.
Looks like things are looking up for me. Just won’t be able to use telepods at night (or I will have to put in higher watt light bulbs)

Hi @sparty83, my device isn’t listed either, but they work. I have a Razr Maxx, but the only Razr Maxx Hasbro lists is the Razr Maxx HD, which came out just about a year ago. I’ve had mine about 16 months & believe it came out 4-5 months prior.

While I’m not familiar with any of the other supported Android devices, I recognize a few names & wonder if just like with my a Razr Maxx, maybe only the most recent were tested & are therefore listed.

I’m glad you discovered that more light was all that was needed to get them to work for you. It seems they take an incredible amount of bright light. While testing mine, I had the lampshade off, the Telepod properly mounted & situated, while holding the phone beneath a 150w bulb & it DID NOT WORK! When I moved the phone above the lamp so that light shone up onto the QR from beneath, it teleported : – ).

I also tried aiming the light beam from my old HTC Droid Incredible’s built-in flashlight app, up into the QR code, once again from below the Telepod base & it worked perfectly. This is a very bright light & actually the best Android flashlight app I’ve ever seen, it too bad it’s proprietary.

I wonder just how many people think their Telepods aren’t working when the actual problem is insufficient light or assume that because their device isn’t listed they won’t work.

You guys rock! My boys wanted these SW2 pods sooo bad, and when they weren’t working on an OLD Galaxy S phone they use for games…they were crushed. Tried under a lamp and just like you said, the additional light did the trick. Hopefully more people will find this! Thanks!

I am have the telepods, and it is working fine on my iPhone. The T icon does not appear on my iPad game, and I cannot figure out what to do so I can use the telepods on it. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Amber, I’m not sure I can be of any help, but I’ll try.

1. As you know, for Telepods to work, the device must have a front facing camera. I presume with no front facing camera that the “T” doesn’t appear, but I’m not 100% sure. Is there any chance you have the 1st Gen iPad with no cameras? I play on an Android phone, but have last year’s iPad & it has the required camera.

2. Is your IOS software up to date? Mine updated to IOS 7.0.2 recently.

3. Have you restarted your device?

4. I don’t know if this is possible without losing data, but what about reinstalling the app?

I’ve noticed that even when I’m not connected to the internet my “T” for telepod importing still appears on my Android phone although the import function won’t work & I get a ” not connected to network” message.

Please let us know if you figure out both the problem & the solution so we may be able to help others in the future.

The Telepod Icon doesn’t show up on my IPad2, which has a camera. I installed the new IOS software, restarted the device, and no telepod icon. I think there’s a bug.

DARN IT! Apparently, you can’t use Telepods on Samsung Galaxy Tab 1, according to Hasbro’s site. So why is there still a Telepod button in the top left if we can’t even use them?

If the TELEPOD button appears, maybe it is compatible. We’ve had reports of compatibility extending beyond Hasbro’s list.

@amslimfordy Really? Maybe there still is hope for Christmas! Thanks!

Are there any Reward Chapter levels whose characters can only be obtained with a Telepod? Thanks.

@laurafj Yes, we mark them on the Characters guide

Thanks, Slim, but now I am confused. I have completed the Reward Chapter level for all of the characters which are marked ‘Telepod’ only and I don’t have any Telepods. I merely bought the characters in the store and played each one enough to accumulate the points necessary for the Reward Chapter. All leftover (i.e. not needed to open the Reward level) characters I have are all playable in the regular levels.

But are you aware of any characters who may have a Reward level but aren’t in the store for purchase with coins so can only be accessed with the Telepods. Although as I am writing this question I think it is pretty unlikely that a character would have a Reward Level but not be in the store. Thanks.

@laurafj The ‘telepod’ marked characters are those that don’t appear in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, and thus they’ll most probably never be available in any regular level. All of them can be purchased in the shop for coins as well, and all have their reward levels.

Sorry maybe we should specify:

Every “TELEPOD-only” character is available from Watto’s Shop. Every character is, I believe.

My son just bought the Heroes vs. Villains Pack. All of the regular figures work but the 4 exclusive figures available only in this pack give us the “character doesn’t seem to work” reply. Clicking the ? only takes us to a Hasbro site with no help. All of his other telepods are importing fine. Since he is 5 and therefore light years ahead of me in understanding how this stuff works, I thought I would appeal to the experts. Suggestions before I head back to return the items?

Hi CP,

I would recommend updating your Angry Birds Star Wars II app to v1.1.x. Those four characters were added in that version, and I would imagine there are issues with those TELEPODs if you are running an earlier version.

If you continue to have issues, please let us know and we can try to help more. :) Happy flinging.

will the telepod work with an amazon kindle fire?
ie does it matter what type of tablet you have to use this?
thanks!

Kindle Fire HD appears on Hasbro’s list of supported devices.

My son has an android tablet and it shows the T symbol but when we put the telepod on the camera nothing happens. It just keeps saying put your telepod on the camera. The camera is right in the corner. It may be incompatible but i have a Samsung galaxy s3 phone and the same thing happens.

You may have to adjust the position or angle of the TELEPOD stand. The cameras can be very picky.

How do telepods work on kindle fire HD if it doesn’t have a camera? I can’t find anything, anywhere to help me with this!

TELEPODs only work on select devices, not all.
