Angry Birds Seasons Now Available in the Mac App Store!

Less than a week after the PC release, Angry Birds Seasons has launched in the Mac App Store! A special thanks to JimGenious for being the first to spot it. Below is a very brief rundown of the Mac Version, which is basically the same as the other Mac versions.

For more granular details about what to expect in this update please check out the PC post here »

Update: Mac has received an update to v2.0.1, which fixes an issue with the app’s settings and highscores files. After updating, users should be able to transfer data from iOS to Mac using our process.

  • Where do I download it and how much does it cost?
  • To download Angry Birds, Rio, or Seasons on your Mac head over to the Mac App Store (links to the Seasons page). Unless a sale is running, each version is $4.99 to purchase.
  • Does the Mac version have every level?
  • Just about. The Mac/PC versions of apps have all levels except for the 3 Facebook/Twitter levels that some episodes have.

Update: It is possible that the Facebook/Twitter levels may be added in the future. See the correspondence in the forum.

  • How do the controls work?
  • Check out our Angry Birds control guide for the complete control schema.

Kind of interesting…You can’t transfer your progress from the iOs game to the Mac game because the lua files of the Mac game are not encrypted while those of the iOs game are.

No you can’t, Slim. :) I’ve transferred my progress between the Mac, iPad and iPhone versions of the game many times in the past. It didn’t work this time. When I inspected the lua files (highscores.lua and settings.lua), I found out why.

The Mac version of Seasons uses lua files that are not encrypted. Meaning: when you open them with a simple text editor, you can read the information that the game uses. When you open the lua files of the iOs versions of Seasons, you see unreadable stuff with tons of characters you would not ordinarily use. This is to prevent users from cheating by, for example, manually changing a high score for a certain level.

Interestingly the other Mac versions do use encrypted lua files. Hence, there are no problems transferring your progress to those versions. But you can’t at this point – without a lot of work – transfer your progress between your iPad and the Mac for Seasons. The obvious question is: why would Rovio do this? It seems to me that a Sync service would demand that the lua files are all encoded the same way.

Hrm, interesting. Thanks for the insight. Will direct this to BirdLeader and FujiToast to see if they can confirm. (Unfortunately, I’m stuck running Vista… no OSx for me.)

Yep, I can confirm, it’s most definitely not encrypted currently. Quite strange.
