Angry Birds Friends Leagues Tournament Featured Image

In addition to the second part of the special Angry Birds Friends Halloween Tournament, this week also brings us the much anticipated release of Angry Birds Friends “League Tournament” update. This update has rolled out to Facebook, iOS and Android via Google Play and Amazon. Rovio sums this update up best:

It’s you vs. the world in the NEW LEAGUE TOURNAMENT! Now the weekly tournament is not limited to only your friends list. Compete against millions of bird slingers across the globe! Climb the league tiers and earn a spot at the top in the Diamond tier!

In addition to the update, as I mentioned above, part 2 of the Angry Birds Friends Halloween Tournament is also on now. Like last week, it features six new zombie-pig filled levels. To participate head on over to Facebook fire it up on your mobile or tablet.

Our walkthroughs are live and the leaderboard is ready for your scores! So what do you all think of this week’s special Halloween tournament?

@birdleader This update also added the useful fast-forward button to iOS and Android for ending a level more quickly after all pigs are popped.

I do not wish to be part of a league. Is there an opt out?

Rank: Sling God with 36990 points
By Bird Leader (@birdleader)

Not that I know of. @sal9 Did you see a way to opt out (other than simply not playing)?

Rank: Sling God with 26055 points
By sal9 (@sal9)

I don’t think there is an opt-out option.
If you are concerned about privacy, you are given the option to change your display name (which is good). Just pick a random name, like “Scooby-doo” , and ignore the leagues.

I guess I will stop playing then. It was fun playing with friends.

You still can play against friends. That functionality wasn’t removed.

I, too, don’t particularly want to compete with people using power-ups. I wonder how long one can continue playing without updating. I did notice a lot of problems loading the tournament and levels on the older version today.

I don’t use power ups playing Friends. So I don’t wanna be a part of the league!!

I have two questions:

1. It seems that I am in Glass League. What do I have to do to come to the Wood League? It sais “rating needed: 100”. What is rating 100?

2. When I click on the podium button, it says “not in a league. the leagues are here! complete any level in the weekly tournament to join a league”. Anybody else seeing this? I already finished every level of this week’s tournament. So what else do I have to do???

Rank: Fling King with 4080 points
By DonSleza4e (@donsleza4e)

i think – at the end of this week all players, who got 1st place, will get some rating increase. So if you will finish at 1st place – you will be in next league with others (probably )

all powerup users will have top ratings))

I don’t use power-ups at all

Not necessarily: I don’t use power-ups and am currently second in the glass level.

Is Leagues a 1 week thing, or a new addition into Friends for all eternity?

How do you access the league? I have updated it to the latest version but there is no League there? I’m using iOS.

Does we all can see same score on laegue?
Because i can’t belive it, i didn’t use any power up, but already in top 3.
1st score i see is xxxxx23 with 2 million score.

@Chriss, i also have same question, what is rating?

By Bethany011

Is a league just your individual score or are you inviting others to join you?
If you are more than 1 in a league how do you make that happen? I really don’t think the instructions were really clear single player or multi- player??
Help????

By Hotwheels_03

I would like to know this too !!!

Rank: Sling God with 26055 points

The leagues are automatically generated. As a player, you have only one thing to do: Play!
The better your score, the better your ranking = the greater rewards

Viewed a number of the videos and do like the game play. Wish they would make this into and mobile device app.

@wrw01 Angry Birds Friends is available as a mobile app.

Rank: Sling God with 28590 points

@wrw01 — What videos are you talking about? The ones above on this page are the normal AB Friends levels for this week. Haven’t downloaded the league, but I assume they are the same.
I do play AB Friends on my iPad, and the update is available.

I do not use power ups and do not like too. So does my score compete against people who do use power ups? Is there talk about making a non power up league?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

@rosepoly74 Leagues are global. They do not factor in whether a person uses Power Ups or not.

Rank: Out of this World with 2600 points
By stosh (@stosh)

eventually those who do not use power-ups will remain in the glass league until they get a top 3 score. Time will ultimately segregate the power-up users from non-power-up players.

By Sorkin

That’s completely incorrect. If you are at a position with a green right arrow (which is most of the ranks in glass league), you will progress to the next league at the end of the week. Even if you don’t get to such a position, you will get some league score anyway, and be that much closer to progressing in your league.

By Hotwheels_03

Can we add friends to our league ?

Rank: Sling God with 26055 points
By sal9 (@sal9)

It’s not possible. The leagues are global.

Rank: Sling God with 28590 points
By MVNLA2 (@mvnla2)

Gave in and installed the update. You still get to see your scores against you personal facebook friends. You can also see your league scores. Will be interesting to see how the leagues function. Right now they appear to work somewhat the same as your list of competitors in the Epic Events. In my league, the lowest, it shows 15 or so other people, and amazingly, I am near the top, #2 last time I looked. I say amazingly, because I do not use any power ups, including the special slings, and I stop after I have a gold crown and 3*. I am only playing against the 3 AB birds; have not invited any FB friends.

We seem to have lost the ability to easily gift our fbook friends ??? Ie. The lil gift box is no longer appearing next to my ‘usual’ fbook friends tournament peeps!

I was anti-PU for a very long time but I now use them on Friends from time to time. I’d accumulated about 25,000 coins, and that will keep in PUs for quite a while without having to spend real money. Come to the dark side!

Rank: Sling God with 55530 points
By Terribletom (@terribletom)

Well this looked like a great idea….only problem with the Leagues, is anyone with only a PC, are at a disadvantage from the start. So far, the last 2 weeks, all levels favored mobile platforms!!! Sorta puts the idea of a leagues way out, as nothing would be fair!! Only my simple opinion!!!

By Scorpio 68

If I will compete against players using REAL MONEY, it will be UNFAIR!!!

Rank: Sling God with 26055 points
By sal9 (@sal9)

What would be unfair, is to compete against players using fake money.

By Sorkin

With the exception of some special seasonal slingshots, I think you can earn bird coins to buy everything in the game that “real money” can buy as well. In other words, people who spend real money won’t get any advantage that you can’t earn for yourself.

By Piolin

I don’t seem to have the ability to use my own profile pic, how are people doing that?

I do use slings and power-ups, but I’ve never paid real money to use the app. To get the highest possible scores I’m guessing it will be necessary to use birdcoins faster than they naturally accumulate. Thus the higher leagues will probably only be available to people who spend money in the shop. Which is Rovio’s choice and I can’t blame them much, after all I expect to get psid for my work too. But things are going to be different on ABFriends now.

Rank: Sling God with 26055 points
By sal9 (@sal9)

1- You can set your profile pic in the avatar section of AB Friends

2- The Leagues are no different from the Tournaments we’ve played so far. It’s just another layer of competition that gives you a chance to win more rewards.

By Sarafan

Wish I could play this week’s game regardless of whether there are leagues or not! Game does not want to load on my iPad keeps saying there is a connection problem, tried going in thru Facebook but still won’t load. Anybody else having problems?

By russ

Why can’t i see my friends in the league table even though they have similar score to me

Rank: Avian Overlord with 16080 points
By crash (@tmax)

Dang, think of it as an added perk. You can still compete against your friends…. and maybe you can even advance as far as you can without power ups…. there is no downside to these leagues, and its nice having competetors in the same skill zone as yourself…. even if you dont use power ups you will be competing with others that dont…. or are just really bad…. thats the cool thing, it looks like no matter how good you are you will eventually be paired with good solid competition regardless of if you use power ups or not

Rank: Gold Flinger with 9830 points
By Chris (@chriss)

Why do you all think that there are people “of the same skill zone”? I think the other players are randomly chosen. How can the game know in advance how well you will play during the next week?

What league you are in depends rather on how long you play the game (i.e. how many times you participated in the tournament) than on your skills. All players started in the glass league, so there is no difference between good and not so good players. They are all in the same league.

By Sorkin

The leagues get more difficult to progress in (ie you have to have a higher rank at the end of the week) as you progress, so eventually you will be playing against people of roughly your own skill level.

Rank: Avian Overlord with 16080 points
By crash (@tmax)

No matter the platform or power up use or nonuse, you should end up in a 40 person league each week with people that will be close to your scores…. some people only have time to play a level five times, some play five hundred…. is that fair?

Rank: Gold Flinger with 9830 points
By Chris (@chriss)

If time matters, comprtitions are never fair.

By Sorkin

Isn’t that a bit like saying that if you play online chess against other people, and you only have 5 minutes to think of each move and the other player has an hour, that the whole game is unfair? Besides, in Angry Birds you have strongly diminishing returns after playing the level eg a dozen times.

By Harry

In my league I see a number one with a score that tells me (s)he is using power ups. A score that I will never reach becayse I am too much a miser…
I wonder what the world highest league score is at any moment, can anyone provide that information?

By Sorkin

Most likely it’s someone who has figured out a way to approach the level that you haven’t. Personally, I mostly see the biggest score differences from attacking a level in a more efficient way, and the powerups just give an incremental bonus to that.

Actually I started in Wood; was never in Glass which had/has me wondering how players are placed in Leagues. If I have a fifth place score in one level in Wood, maybe I would be first place in Glass. Does this mean we will keep getting advanced without ever having the coin benefit of a first place finish? I’m another player who REFUSES to use money so if I’m using power-ups they were hard earned by coming in first against friends (probably more than they enjoy.) This is also why I don’t have all the slings and was FURIOUS when I discovered the limited edition Halloween Sling does nothing more than look pretty with flying bats that are solely decorative. Having broken my arm this week and getting surgery later today, it will be interesting to see whether playing for significantly less time, and probably lower scores if I play can at all, will have an impact on league progression. I hope to find a page that simply says, Do X and you will progress to League Y. Good luck, all, and send healing positive thoughts in my direction so my surgery and recovery is successful and speedy!

By Sorkin

As far as I have figure out, I think that the green arrow pointing right in the league player list means that if you are that that rank or higher, you will progress to the next league at the end of the week.

Personally, I don’t spend much money on games (I love trying to “beat the system” ;) and have amassed thousands of bird coins in AB Friends just from playing, but in all honesty I don’t understand the attitude of never paying for anything. I’ve played Friends for more than a year now and it has provided me, like a few other games such as Hay Day, hours of fun/distraction. You don’t get that anywhere else for free, and for me, paying a few bucks here and there is totally worth it. I used to spend 100’s of dollars on PC and console games, many of which were good and many of which were just utter crap. Now I spend something like 10-20 buck a year and get a lot more for it :)

I connected to Facebook and now my league progress is gone. WHAT IS GOING ON!?!

I am in ( and seems like I will be forever) in the Silver league. Two weeks ago I had a negative score of -22. This week I was 23rd in the League, however did not progress at all. I am still at 428. I cannot find the rules for the Silver League to explain this. Help?

By DocNuceGuy
