A Second Teaser of Angry Birds Cloud Sync (Now Removed)

Rovio Account Sign in to Save Scores Screenshot
About a month ago, we announced that a “Cloud Sync System” was making its way into the Angry Birds world. (If you don’t remember, click here for our post.) Angry Birds v3.1.2 was released yesterday and it seems that Rovio might have accidentally included the Cloud system in the package (or maybe it just wasn’t disabled quickly enough, or maybe we’re just too fast!). We had originally reported that Cloud Sync was now available, but alas the icon and service have since been disabled so we will have to wait just a bit longer.

That said, if you are unfamiliar with Cloud Sync, check out our first look at the system in this post. We have more details about what might be to come there.

As soon as Sync is officially released you will be the first to know. Speaking of being the first to know. If you want to know as soon as this — or any — update lands on your platform then be sure to opt-in to our new update notification system via your profile. It’s easy. If you’re logged in just hover or tap your username in the yellow navigation bar (top right), then select “Notifications”. Once there just scroll down and tick yes next to, “Platform Update” and save. You’ll now be notified as soon as this update lands on your primary platform. Woot!

Update 7 May:

Rovio Accounts is now live (permanently) for ABo for iOS devices in Finland and Poland! More geographic areas will be rolled out gradually. For more information, see Rovio’s official release.

I was sitting on my iPad last night around 11 pm, when it popped up. I updated it and used it. It still has my old data. What I mean is, when they were updating toons, it showed up, so I logged in. My iPad had died so I lost all my progress, but had stored with I explorer. I didn’t put the data in yet at the time, so it synced data with nothing completed. Now if I want to use it, I have to restart. I reported this to rovio on march 16, the same day, when they said “cloud sync is not avalable yet on angry birds original, and I’m not sure what you mean by not having the right data on your iPad.”

I’m not sure what you mean either by not having the right data.

By Bob

My iPad had died, but luckily I had the data backed up in iExplorer, using your video. I didn’t put it in yet at the time s it backed it up to rovio account with nothing. Then I replaced the highscores.lua and settings.lua but my rovio account wouldn’t put in the new data, instead, each time I log in, it restarts.

You would need to play (probably defeat) a level in order to copy the data to your device.

By Bob

Well, yes, but its only 1 star in my rovio account, when it releases (again) ill show you a screenshot of it, and my iPad the the new files

I’ve had no issues transferring progress, even when the Rovio Account was live. Maybe it would be a good idea to load that data onto your device before logging in.

Other than that, I don’t know how to help you. Sorry. It sounds to me that the system was operating properly.

By Bob

That’s the problem, I didn’t upload the data first, so it synced the wrong data, and I can’t change it.

Nothing should be synced anymore. The system was revoked, along with all data uploaded.

@AMSlimfordy — Were we supposed to get e-mail notification of this update if we play on IOS? I registered for updates and didn’t get one.

We tried to send it last night but it never went. Trying to find the bug locally now. Hopefully BL will squash it.

I think I’m sitting here waiting with bated breath for this. But I’m not that sure what bated breath actually is.

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

@78RPM “Bated” is a shortening of “abated”, which means to become smaller. If we read the phrase as “Waiting with abated breath”, it would mean that your breathing is shortened or subdued based on emotion.

@78RPM To add to AMslimfordy’s facts:

This is the etymology

bate (1)
“to reduce, to lessen in intensity,” c.1300, aphetic of abate (q.v.). Now only in phrase bated breath, which was first used by Shakespeare in “The Merchant of Venice” (1596)

“with bated breath – in a state of suspenseful anticipation.”

Wikipedia says:
The phrase bated breath, used in a sentence such as “I am waiting for your answer with bated breath”, refers to a state in which the speaker nearly stops breathing through fear, anxiety, awe, anticipation, or suspense. In this sense, “bated” is a contraction of the word “abated”. However, some people misspell the phrase as “baited breath”. The words “bated” and “baited” are homonyms.

(Baited is INCORRECT!–so don’t use it, unless you put a worm in your mouth and happen to be fishing.)

All these definitions…it just refers to a state of excitement…when you rush in to something and are so excited that you hold your breath while you hover in anticipation of the answer. It’s certainly fewer words to say “bated breath” than it is to write it out. Perhaps
we should all write Shakespeare a thank you note for coming up with it.

In a bondsman’s key, With bated breath and whispering humbleness.

I don’t know if this was supposed to happen, but you can sign in to a Rovio Account on The Croods (on Android as far as I know).

Yes, The Croods has Rovio Accounts already.

I have AB Space free installed on my Android from GP and recently the frequent ads have been becoming a nuisance. I opt to remove them via in-game ad remove option but the app description in GP reads:
“NOTE: If you upgrade from Angry Birds Space to Angry Birds Space Premium, your progress will not be transferred.”
So, Is AB Space Premium the ad-free version or is it just another special version with visual improvement like HD version? Does this “upgrade” points out to just removing ads?

Rank: Fling King with 4540 points
By Hidayat1999 (@hidayat1999)

AB Space Premium is an ad-free version of AB Space, no visual improvements. HD version seems to be an ad-free version + visual improvements.

By Golldd

Thanks, then I guess I won’t upgrade as I have all stars and feathers collected and they won’t be transferred to the premium version, so ad-version is fine for me.

@AMslimfordy, do you know what was included in the update? Is it just bug fixes? I’m always a little nervous about updating, so haven’t done so yet.

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

@bonneypattycat I’m not aware of the details, but it was just miscellaneous bug fixes. If you are nervous (I would say the risk is quite minimal; as minimal as any update; over 99% safety) you can always manually backup.

Thanks @AMslimfordy. I checked out your backup methods, but I don’t see a way to backup my iPad, my only Apple product, to my PC, unless I missed something. I might have to borrow my sister’s MacBook… or get my own!

@amslimfordy Great news! So will there be an update rolled out? Any idea why they are releasing it geographically?

I don’t have any such information.

I asked Rovio if merging scores from one device to another would preserve high scores from each device, or just overwrite one with the other and here is their response:

Q: If I merge progress from one device to another using Rovio Account, will it automatically take the higher of the two scores, or will it replace one with the other?

A: Rovio Support Team, May 08 04:12 (EDT):
Hello,

and thanks for contacting us.

The merge will automatically compare the scores on each level and select the higher score for each level to be saved into the Rovio Account.

Kind regards,

Jenni

So…good news for those of us with high scores scattered across multiple devices!!

@Burbman Indeed! I saw that on their FAQ page about it. Talk about a fantastic system.

But that is not good if you sign in with your rovio account to a device that has power-up scores that are better then the scores from the account that you signed in with.

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

@bad-piggies PU scores are logged separately (in most if not all apps), even if there is no visual distinction at this time.

Not sure where to post this, but an interesting article to read and reasonable to think this could work really well with Angry Birds.
