I noticed that, at least on some levels in Ham’o’ween, I get bonus points just for hitting a big boulder with a bird. I get 3000 or mopre points for example, for hitting the boulder at the top of the structure in 1-6. I don’t have to break the boulder, just hit it. Never noticed this before in previous Seasons updates. Is this something new? What’s the point behind this bonus, if any?

Been that way for a while, in all apps. Think of them as super-dense balls of points.

I’ve noticed those too. It’s great to get the extra points but then it confuses me when I don’t get the points I should. An example would be on 1-2 (Ham’O’Ween) where I’m trying for extra points since I’ve finished all the levels. If I shoot the first of the black pumpkins with yellow, he takes off with the rocks and hits the other black pumpkin as well as the first of the wood structures. If I’m lucky I might get 5000 points. Any idea why it works that way?

Is it better tto have an empty score or enter a below average score?ty for help:)

Rank: Avian Overlord with 18070 points
By trishohara (@trishohara)

That depends for what you want to use the leaderboard. I like to enter all my scores and then see how much and how many are below average. And how’s total score is compared to score achievement.

Rank: Champion with 3295 points
By Laurence (@laurence)

If there were no scores entered below the average, the average would keep going higher and higher until there would be virtually no one entering scores, so IMO its better to enter them anyway, and then you can see what levels you can improve the most. Personally, I don’t usually enter my scores until I have 3 stars in all levels so that my average isn’t usually too far below, but there’s no punishment for entering a score 20k below average (I hope!) Anyway, hope this helps and best of luck with your scores :)

By Chipmunk

I do the same thing as Laurence. I figure it adds to my total score, and gives a more realistic average score for the level. I refuse to enter one- or two-star scores though – too embarrassing! :-)

Is this here the right place to ask about something at Gamecenter?
Right now I am improving my score in Halloween. I am above AngryBirdsNest-average in all levels. Total score at Gamecenter says rank 384.
But world 2 says 23021. How can that be? Do you have any idea?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points

Yeah, the World 2 counter does some strange things. We have never been able to figure out what is happening there. I wouldn’t worry about it. Stick with the full episodic leaderboards. :)

Rank: Slinger with 1045 points
By moonsabre (@moonsabre)

There was a bug in an earlier release that added all of the Halloween scores into World 2. This was only was affected by those that played a Halloween world 2 level during this short period before they had released the update. Sadly those scores are basically “stuck” as you can’t legitimately beat those scores.

Rank: Avian Overlord with 18070 points

Thanks for the explanation. I have been wondering a year now why the Trick or Treat World 2 scores had such impossibly high scores in Game Center. Never saw an explanation until now.

More generally, I think it is a real failing of Game Center that it apparently offers no way for a developer to fix/remove such false scores — or otherwise correct an error. Months ago, I contacted Rovio about this and they never replied. Oh well. Far from the biggest of problems in the larger scale of things.

I really like this site, there are great walkthroughs, tips from users on how to get high scores, tips on where the hidden fruit, golden eggs etc are and of course the leaderboards. I do my best to continually increase my scores based on “Off High” scores. But having just check a few, it’s really sad that some people feel the need to post ridiculous scores just have “High Score” show up on thier leader board. I’ll admit that I am not the greatest bird flinger out there, but when I have a score in the top 20 for a level and see that I am 30k to 40k away from the top score, it just pisses me off that someone is cheating and not even trying to hide it. I know some have posted screen shots, but as noted in the past, that’s easy to fudge. I don’t want to see this site go away or the leaderboards shut down, but I can see the admins saying “The hell with this” with all the cheating that seems to be going on lately.

Sorry for the rant, but it just burns my back side to see this crap by a few users.

Rank: Champion with 3295 points
By Laurence (@laurence)

Many times there is a genuine mistake such as mistaken box when entering scores.

Also, if a score is way off, it is generally noted and either removed or asked for confirmation. Slim, BL and co do a good job of that. If there’s a level that you think the top score is off on, post a comment here and it will be looked at by an admin.

There are also a few bugs around that mean you can get a higher score because of double bird counts.

Hope this helps, and enjoy the site :)

Rank: Sling God with 33610 points
By sparty83 (@sparty83)

The admins are great at weeding out bad scores, but they shouldn’t have to do this at all if everyone was honest. (I know, just a pipe dream). I didn’t want to call anybody out by name, but now that its out there, I did flag his score on Wreck the Halls 1-5 and Achre’s score. (and a couple of others from other people). I have flagged scores in the past and they have been taken care of. I do appreciate all the hard work that Slim, BL, et all do here.

I can understand the honest mistake of entering a wrong score, fat fingering a score, or putting it in in the wrong place, but when a user posts a picture for a level that is 30k above the next highest score, that is not a simple mistake. When a user like Marc987 (among great shooters) isn’t even close, it makes one wonder. I looked at his pic, it looks legit to me but come on now, I’m sure I could do the same with a little time and photoshop.

Best I can muster is 70190. This is not even the average.

What gets me, is that the high score is 130,840? Are you kidding me? Is that real?

I must be missing something. I’ve tried the only one bird solution I can, and 70190 is the highest I can get.

Is there something I’m missing on this? I cannot see any other combinations getting nearly that high. And am struggling to get even the average. That’s the one bird shot with first shot going towards that little stick on top of the arch. A piece of debris flying off with the hen head, hitting the tnt box. And the debris knocks the tnt to the side, so it wipes out the train, etc….

Best I can do is the 70k.

What makes me wonder that I’m missing something is the average is so high and this shot is so difficult. I do feel like I’m missing something.

The leaderboard is open to all players from all platforms. Gamecenter is only open to apple devices.
In other words, you get a tougher competition here …

Rank: Master Slinger with 6425 points
By mfiman (@mfiman)

I agree that many of the best players hang out here. It is a select group.

But I would also suggest a more controversial additional explanation. Everyone who hangs out here (and I include myself in this group) is guilty of cheating. That is, the scores posted on the Leaderboard here would be significantly lower if the posters did not have the benefit of the walk-throughs and comments available on this site. Many of the scores on Apple’s GameCenter come from people who have probably never heard of this site; that’s one reason they are lower on average.

To be clear, if you use this site for your own education, that’s fine. But when you post your scores to the Leaderboard, you are competing with others. If this was a real competition, looking at the walk-throughs would be considered illegal. Can you imagine, for example, a crossword puzzle tournament where it was allowed to look up words in a dictionary or use Google to find an answer? No. Because that would be cheating. The walk-throughs here are no different.

[FWIW, I don’t look at any walk-throughs until I’ve spent a couple of days trying to get my best score on my own. That’s part of the fun for me. It’s rare that the walk-through pages improve my score. But it does happen on occasion.]

That said, I concede to one significant caveat. There are two parts to getting high scores in Angry Birds. The first is solving the puzzle of where and how to aim the birds. This is the part where the walk-throughs and comments amount to a cheat. The second is having the skill — and luck — to have the birds go exactly where they need to go to get the high score. This remains a matter of skill and luck (not cheating) even with the walk-throughs. That’s a key difference between Angry Birds walk-throughs and crossword puzzle hints/answers.

In fact, I suspect that Rovio may be adding a greater element of luck to recent episodes precisely to undermine the benefit of the sort of cheating we do here.

I know the word “cheating” carries negative connotations and looking at walk-throughs and associated comments is certainly far more ethical than hacking the GameCenter board or knowingly posting phony scores. And I truly admire this site and the people who frequent it. Still, when I am being honest with myself, I have to say that it is a form of cheating.

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

I have to disagree. I don’t think it’s cheating at all, especially considering the attitude of this site. This is an Angry Birds community. The walkthrough pages allow users to express different opinions and strategies, and to work together.

You compare this to a crossword puzzle tournament, which indeed is completely independent. But what about sports like golf? You can watch one player take a shot, and then decide if you want to try the same thing, or vary it slightly. You’re still competing for yourself, and you still need to make the shot, but you are basing your strategy on the outcomes of other players.

The same is true for most professional sports. NFL players and coaches spend hours every week watching the play of other teams, either as preventative (defense) or improvement (offense). It’s not cheating at all.

Also, Rovio is well-aware of our little site. They poke in here from time to time, and reference us on Twitter a bit too. They aren’t out to hurt us, or counter our efforts. Rather, I’m sure they get a bit tired of hearing “OMG that was so easy!” 12 hours after an update is release. This way, they get to chuckle as people struggle a bit.

Rank: Master Slinger with 6425 points
By mfiman (@mfiman)

Your golf metaphor is a good one. It has merit — although I would suggest Angry Birds requires far less physical skill than the sports you mention. :)

However, I see a further difference. Solving the puzzle is part of what Angry Birds is about. It’s a mystery when you first see a new level. “Do I aim here or there?” It can take hours or days (if ever) to discover the best way to sequence your shots to even have a chance at a high score.

If, instead, you immediately go to AngryBirdsNest and read a few comments that tell you precisely how to get the best score (where to aim, how to angle the shots, etc. etc.), you’ve taken the mystery out the equation. All that’s left is good aim, persistence and luck. To me, that’s a form of cheating.

[As an aside, your comments about Rovio are interesting. I wonder if they ever find that people here have discovered ways to get a high score that they didn’t know exist. Or are they never surprised?]

Rank: Sling God with 45310 points
By Kathy (@kathy)

I have to agree with slim, I dont consider myself a cheater by listening and learning from others advice. If that were true , then my whole life is one big cheat. People learn from others since the time they are born, til the time they pass, its just a matter of whose advice you choose to learn from;)

Rank: Champion with 3295 points
By Laurence (@laurence)

I see the point you’re making, but it entirely up to each individual if they look at the walkthroughs or not. Personally, I normally spend a few hours on a level, hey three stars, and move on. If I then compare my score to the average here and I’m a long way off 10k or more, for example, I’ll look at a walkthrough. It’s not really ‘cheating’, as this site is open to anyone, and it’s not hard to find if you google for angry birds walkthroughs.

One of the reasons the average is so high I think is because you have to register first, so this tends to rule out the more casual players who pop in and out when they’re stick on a tricky level. This often just leaves more serious players, who are by their very nature, experts at the game, Marc, Manu, angryGRX, etc to name but a few. This creates a demographic that includes world top players, which naturally increases the average. And if you can get the average here, you know you’re doing well, as I think all averages are above even the score addict minimums!

So I’ve heard, came out 12/11/11 (their birthday) for the ios, I’ve seen the screenshots :)

if i were you, i’d watch my use of the word ‘everyone’ when you have no knowledge of that. i use the birds nest for one thing only, to find out what the average and high scores are for any level, something that is basically like having a large group of friends who you compare scores with.

for 10 days i was completing the daily level of ‘wreck the halls’ (i’ll go at it every day until i get 3-stars) and every day i went back to 1-4 to try to improve my 2-star score. i know walkthrough’s exist and it’s very tempting to watch, especially on a frustrating level like this one (at least it was for me). yesterday i finally figured it out and got that 3rd star (though how people beat some of my scores by 10-15k is still most times a mystery to me!), but even my piddlingly small 3-star score felt good knowing it was MY solution.

so you you want to consider yourself a cheater, fine with me, but please watch how you speak of others with blanket statements like yours.

By obflyer (@obflyer)

by the way, this is one reason i believe the scores here are of a high average… without knowing higher scores are possible, i would probably waste some of my time on levels where i’m already close to the high score. the advantage of joining the birds nest is to be able to use your playing time more efficiently.

Points noted. I amend my prior statement. I was referring to using the walk-through pages, not simply looking at the high score lists.

I find this a very interesting use of the word ‘cheating’. Whilst I generally detest arguments that involve semantics there are several different definitions of the word (ref: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cheat) and I still find this stretching the meaning somewhat beyond its bounds. The only way to make this stick would be to think of AB as either a purely solo venture (which clearly if you did you would never have use for a site like this and thus we would not be having this conversation) or you are applying a set of rules or principles to the game that henceforth define the parameters under which you believe the game should (emphasis on should here) be played. This is where you add a subjective character to the game, a character which not everyone will agree with and I would think the selection bias of this site would hamper with making such an argument (only people who use the site will see the post and in that you have the people that believe that the game is not a solo venture but a community undertaking, a principle in direction opposition to what I presuming is a value that you hold).

I think the site itself promotes a community around the game and spurs competition (albeit somewhat unhealthy at times when someone manages some absurd combination of shots that you just have to try and replicate). Each individual will use the site for different things. Some will never ever post and others will devote great chunks of time to developing the site (aka Slim) and the community around the game (too many shooters to name here but you know who you are).

In summary I believe the subjective ‘frame’ that you have constructed and under which you perceive how AB should be played has lead to your conclusion about the walkthroughs equating to cheating, this will (probably) not be shared by many that participate actively in this site. I can see the merit of your argument but I can’t say I agree with you. I would also like to say that if people don’t want to they don’t have to use the walkthroughs, that’s a choice each of us makes. I think you also have to consider the fact that someone has to figure it out first and write it up for everyone else. That is one of the best parts of the game imho. Figuring it out first and letting everyone know how you did it. Then people tweak it and give it back. To be honest that, for me at least, is much more than the game itself could ever offer on its own. So for me, AB would be pretty boring with the ABN community. But that’s just my opinion and as we live in a free country (at least down south in Australia :P) everyone is entitled to their own.

Very well spoken nature, I could not have said it better, the comradarie of ABN, is really what makes the game exciting for me at least.

Rank: Slinger with 1155 points
By natureswrath (@natureswrath)

That should read pretty boring without the ABN community… Kathy you are one of those shooters. I don’t want to seem as though I am devaluing the ideas or contribution of the individual that started this comment but I just can’t agree with the sentiment conveyed in the post.

I knew you meant “without” ,and yes, i am one of those players, I will use all the tools available to improve my shooting, and am happy to help others when I can. I dont consider that cheating.

By Chris

Cheating sounds illegal, so it’s not cheating at all if you watch the walkthroughs. Walkthroughs should help if you are not able to finish a level in a video game. It exists for almost all video games.

But I don’t understand people who ask for walkthroughs 1 hour after new levels came out. The challenge is to find your own solution.

I personally only watch the walkthroughs in order to improve my scores when I want to get a score addict achievement.

Is seasons for tablet different than seasons for phones? I just recently redownloaded this to my xoom and the first level is way easier with a way lower score than on my nexus one.

How about this to add to this site, Tournament. You could enter a section (each section holding 300 people) and there would be 6 of them. Then you would enter a score and with a added gimick or no gimick at all you can decide. Then after 24 hours the top 100 on each section would move up to the next level with a diffrent gimick or no gimick at all. Then the top 50 out of two sections. Then the top ten of all the three and split them into two groups. Then 1st place out of the two sections. The winner would get a trophy badge detacating that you won a tournament.

P.S. You have 24 hours to enter each score

P.S.S. Admins can start a tournament any time after ones end

P.S.S.S. It would be for ABO, ABS, and ABR.

We’ve actually recently discussed some sort of tournament or “mini-game” between updates. But we would need more time to sort things out. We also have some larger issues at hand right now. But we do appreciate the ideas.

Seasons greedings 1-24 looks like its a typo or fake. Its a little bit to much higher than second place.

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

It’s been there for a while but we can’t really justify removing it. Sure it’s a little high, but that was one of the old “Santa’s Hat” levels — it is plausible that the score is legitimate.

Rank: Explosive with 2105 points
By nascarboy (@nascarboy)

How far apart should first place and second place be for it to be considered as removing so I know when to flag?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

No real guideline. But Seasons Greedings is tougher to moderate. That “Santa’s Hat” makes policing rather difficult.

Rank: Champion with 3295 points
By Laurence (@laurence)

As slim said, no real guideline, and it depends from level to level. On one level, 3k might be a big difference, on another, it might mean nothing. And of course there are the Santa’s hat levels that cause trouble. As a rough guide I use about 10% as my guideline, but as I say, it varies. Reputation is also a key factor, as I wouldn’t flag Manu, rocklands, etc, as they’re just so well respected. If you’re unsure about a level, either post here, or ask on the level walkthrough page, and of the scores valid normally an explanation and/or screenshot appears. If not, the score will probably be deleted. Hope this helps, and good luck! :)

Another good idea is to check that user’s personal leaderboard (just click their name). If it’s the only score they have and it’s a top score, then that’s a big flag. On the other extreme, if they have scores entered for every level, all are above average, and they rank in the top 10 on our boards, then it’s safe to assume they are completely legit.

Wreck the Halls 20, 21 ans 22 are giving me fits trying to get more than the average. I managed to get 1K above on 22 but that’s taken ALL day and I’ve only managed it a handful of times. I’m hoping for a nice easy level tomorrow!! lol

again, my main reason for stopping by here is to check the average scores. knowing those scores are not just a freak occurrence, it often convinces me try a completely different strategy. so far WTH level 3 has been my nemesis. still 3k from the average and it’s driving me crazy, but eventually i’ll figure it out. hang in there, i’m sure you’ll get there, too.

two days and only 50k from WTH score addict. i think i just might have a chance to pass it this evening. woo-hoo!!

Before I take my first ever shot at new level, I look it over and project, right? So it seems my FIRST attempt is my best. I used two birds and got it all, but a low score. Further attempts seem to mess up the whole idea. I finally got 3* and now I’ve accomplished 82,000. WB into the tnt, then clean up. Still not even average, which is in reality what I strive for, (isn’t that what our parents taught us? Strive to be average! but I think that it should be worth extra point for the even 82. Big sigh. Back to the throwing board! Good luck flingers!

By Georgerxtx

The frustrating bit is my parents said be above average and comparing to the dedicated users on this board is very hard to be above average.
