How to Restore Your iPhone and Your Angry Birds Progress

A few users have left comments stating that due to the loading bug in Angry Birds v1.6.0 they lost all their Angry Birds progress, thus have to start over (note, I think this is only true for those who took drastic action and decided to delete the AB from their device. DON’T DO THIS!). You might be able to get your progress back by restoring your iOS device via iTunes. This will bring your device back to the state of your last sync.

Let me get this out of the way first: DO NOT UNINSTALL ANGRY BIRDS. If you did and your progress is gone, DO NOT SYNC WITH ITUNES UNTIL AFTER YOU’VE RESTORED AN OLDER BACKUP. If you do you’re last backup won’t contain your Angry Birds data. Also, any progress you made between your last sync and your restore will have to be redone, so make sure this is right for you.

Update: We now have a complete backup guide for most platforms, including iOS. We greatly encourage all gamers to check this out: Angry Birds Ultimate Backup Tutorial for all Platforms.

Update: Thanks to mupo for pointing out that you don’t actually have to do a complete restore like shown in the video below. First, try the following:

  1. Connect your device to your computer and open iTunes (if it doesn’t open automatically)
  2. Right click on your device in the left hand menu and choose, “Restore from Backup”
  3. At this point, if you have more than one backup you will have the option to choose what backup you want to restore from the dropdown list.
  4. If you don’t see the dropdown then you’ll have to restore from the most recent backup. Hopefully this has your Angry Birds data intact. If it doesn’t, anyone here provide a possible alternative to restore an older backup?

For those of you loyal AB players who have lost everything and can’t get their progress back even after a restore all is not lost. Contact us and we may be able to provide you with a highscore.lua and a settings.lua file (we will handle this on a case-by-case basis). Using iPhoneExplorer or PhoneView you can place these onto your device. This will give you three stars on all levels and all the Golden Eggs; however, your scores will now obviously match those of the person who provided you the files (us!), so you’d lose your ranking on the leaderboards. That said, I think that’s a small price to pay for not having to redo every single level.

There is already a bug fix that addresses the loading issue (v.1.6.1), so be sure to update Angry Birds before loading again.

I’m having the same issue with exactly the same level…

I’m unable to open the link above though, all I get is…

“You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.”

Anyone?

Regards

Sorry, that was a busted link. I have updated it. Check out the 8-5 walkthrough page and it has the bug listed.

Hi there. I was in level 11-10, and after finishing with what I think was worth three stars, the screen went black. Afters restarting the game all my scores were gone. Strangely enough all the levels were accesible, but with no score at all. Unfortunately I hoped to restore this by synching in Itunes…
What to do next? I found the mobilesync map, but all it shows is meaningless numbers. The only other reent update dates from four months ago, about the time I started trying to get three stars in all levels.
What now? And how come I lost everything?
Thanks for your answer

Unfortunately, there isn’t much we can do besides offer our sympathies. If restoring from an iTunes backup won’t work, then your scores are gone. Sorry.

I got a new phone and with my initial restore all game data was lost – all apps out of order – lost pictures – disaster. I just did a restore and backup from the same original restore date and presto – all back to normal!!(except for about the last 6 days of pics and texts) but I got my data back. Thank you so much!!!! I am also calling APPLE – they all gave me run arounds all week by google I found this!

This is an informative post on how to restore your progress. I have had to perform this action when changing devices.
For a future reference, this post will be printed and placed in the ABN file.

All data is completely gone for me. Angry Birds, Angry Birds Rio, and Angry Birds Seasons.
Space is Fine! I even lost my most valuable find! the GOLDEN BEACHBALL!

We have had a post about the Golden Beachball levels for a bit.
Did you do something strange to wipe three apps worth if data? That’s not typical…

Hi guys, my iPhone was damaged and I had to get a replacement. Had the phone backed-up but when I went to do a restore the back-up was corrupted. Apparantley reading the forums there’s nothing to do in this situation so I’ve now lost my Angry Birds data. I had all stars for RIO, Space, Original & Seasons.

I had problems last year and was able to get some game data so I didn’t have to do them all again – where do I get that now? Don’t mind doing the last few months as I was up to there anyway, but won’t bother doing them all again.

Ideas?

I have google chrome on my laptop and have played Angry Birds quite often. About one week ago when I went to play Angry Birds, all of my scores were gone. Since then, every time I enter the site my scores are gone and have to start all over again. Why aren’t my scores being retained anymore?

We have a separate post about backing up for Google Chrome.

I turned my android tablet off last night and when turning on this morning to play angry birds star wars, all my data and stars were lost. Is there any way to restore it? I loaded the software by wifi so there’s no synching. I had all levels done and was working on 3 stars! Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried replaying a few levels? It sometimes unlocks your progress.

By craig

Sal9, thanks for the suggestion. I tried 12 levels but still no recovered data. Any other suggestions welcome.

I was nearly finished with Angry Birds:Star Wars when my phone died. I booted back up on a charger and it shows that I need to start over…all progress lost. HTC Vivid. Any help?

Once progress is lost, there’s not really anything that can be done unless you have been backing up your progress.

I got new iphone and all scores from angry birds, -rio and -seasons are gone! But scores to space, star wars and bad piggies are still there. How can I get score that I have lost back?

Rank: Sling God with 28450 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

You can’t unless you still have the original device.

By Hhessu

But why scores from other games stayed?

As we say, an iTunes Restore is not bulletproof. It would depend on when you last backed up your device, the OS compatibility, and the integrity of the backup. Any one of these can negatively effect a restore.

Ok, so I switched from an iPhone 4 to a Samsung Galaxy S4. I no longer have service to my iPhone, and I have not created a Rovio Account yet. Is there a way to get an account to save the progress I made on my iPhone so that it shows up on my Galaxy?

Delete the app and reinstall will usually do it.

So what’t the point of gamecenter if it doesn’t save your progress or backup any game files….. :-/

Profile photo of KelaniRank: Master Slinger with 5640 points
By Kelani (@kelani)

TomF: Game Center was made for score recording, leaderboards, and in-game achievements. It does so for hundreds (if not thousands) for games from hundreds of publishers. What you’re suggesting would mean Apple having to provide backup support for all those other vendors’ products when cloud backup, and other backup schemes already exist. That is not technically feasible, and makes no sense, financially.

GameCenter was NEVER meant to serve as a progress backup system. It was a one-way road to log scores and achievements to share and compete against your friends.
