Shiny Totems and where to apply them

Question:  is it better to apply a shiny totem to a low value bird, and then use that bird to level up a strong one, or to apply the totem directly to the strong one?

The write up of the totem makes it sound be like the former but that doesn’t really make sense to me.

Yeah, it’s the former if you are talking about XP shiny. Whatever bird is XP shiny will give more XP to the bird that eats it to level up. So you’d want to apply it to the bird that will get eaten.

Unless you aren’t going to use it to get XP and just want the birds you use to look shiny. Then you apply it to the bird you want to keep.
