@Kelani. I planed some of it down for an idea I had but haven't felt good enough to follow through. But is it ever pretty. I oiled a small piece to see the finish and about fainted. This was from an old tree on my grandfathers place. He took it down and stored it in an old railroad car he had at the lake for 60 years. I pulled it out about five years ago, so I guess it's about 65 now. It's older than me!!

lol Pa *refrains from kicking the wall)* I used your stratedgy to the T!!
I threw a few practice shots with yb to get the angle just right. . high enough to split rope and not so high as to hit blocks or miss wood.. in the practice you see the trace line of yb path then wait for the hanging blocks to come and see if your hhigh enough to cut the rope;) -
maybe we can get together @Pa @kelani @fenikus @bernersenn @mvnla2 and gather a list of the scores we have flagged and ask @Amslimfordy to give some attention to them since there are so many wading in the river?

@Rat I like the way you and Grandpa think. He's lucky to find an old tree that wasn't hollow. Seems like everyone with nice wood sits on it forever. My uncle has an 10'x10' climate-controlled shed packed with a fortune in walnut burls and slabs our genius furniture companies left to rot 20 years ago. He's still looking for just the right project, and will be 'til the day he dies. :P All I have is some fridge-size tiger maple logs. I keep checking the paper for a "Will trade portable sawmill time for AB lessons" ad.
You said you planed some cherry. Do you have a RatShop, or just hit it with a hand plane?
Lumber is weird. There's at least 4 huge sawmills within 10 miles, but at Lowes 2 miles away, all their lumber is from Germany, and all the plywood's from China.
@Kathy OK, that's an unedited post. Here's the edited version
Rat: You have awesome wood. I envy your wood. My wood sucks. New wood is too expensive.
There is just no way to talk about wood without it sounding wrong. -
@Kathy @Rat would know if 105k on #9 is legit. He got 103.5k I wouldn't hold my breath on getting tips from Aki. Someone in here said both van Emdens are pretty tight-lipped about their strategies.
The only score I completely don't like is Danno's on #3 That had to be a glitch of some kind. Nobody is ever going to be able to match it. -
My word. . my Pahtnah can sense my feeling. . just got a note and i feel better
haha @Kelani i see the point of the editing. .lol
Pa I was wondering what you were doing with 600 points! !
o.k. I guess i gotta go take a dip in the River
OB like i said earlier c'mon blues pack the cooler; ) -
@Rat Aw. I bet. Mine's just a pile of hand-me-downs and salvaged stuff, but I'd hate to lose it.
Heh, a lot of the stuff I have came from a neighbor. Her dad was an acft mechanic in your old branch. Along with tools, He had a turn signal handle from a 1940 Nash ambulance, and a manifold ID plate from the reactor of a 1967 Ben Franklin-class sub. I wish I knew how he managed to get ahold of that. -
My planer is not a hand held model @Kelani, but it's not a lot better. It's a stationary single side jointer/planer. Three rotating blades. It's great for edges and such, but not for large pieces. Plus, there's an art to using a single side jointer/planer. My favorite is a hand drawn barrel planer. You can do all sorts of interesting stuff with them.
My father in law died about five weeks ago. I hated that I have no shop at the moment because he had all sorts of stuff I wanted to bring home with me. He was a tinker extraordinaire. He had built, not for business but for fun, a 100' x 60' shop with a 15' covered area on one long side and a large green house attached on the other side for his wife to putter in. It was only a short walk from the back door of his house. He had them put four position electrical outlets every four feet along the walls. He said he never wanted to hunt for an outlet. He didn't do wood working per se, but he had a shopsmith and a large assortment of wood working tools I envied. Along with everything from arc welders to well, just about anything. *I couldn't think of a z tool* We brought in an auction house to empty the shop. I cried at his funeral. I'd like to think it was because he had died, not because I couldn't bring home all his toys. But I'm not sure. -
Good luck with those finals @angryboy!
@mumsie42 you freak! Waiting on a new update of CC! Jeeeeeez! I'm in the 300's now. I don't suppose you can remember that level you were on that had you stumped for months? I'm scared!
Sorry all the BR addicts,I skimmed over the flinging talk although congrats to all involved! All in the top 10? WOW! I'm still not getting dragged into it right now but thought I'd take a tentative peek at my standing and I'm holding strong at 86th Oh dear ;( Haahaaaa!
As for flagging scores I flagged someone last week and left them a pleasant enough message asking if maybe it had been a typo as his other scores looked legit but no joy on a reply from him or the flagging. Someone else popped in beside me quizzing it as well so I'll keep my eye on it.
Hope everyone has a lovely Sunday X -
@Kathy -- I love the little guy sleeping on the keyboard! Fits you perfectly!
@all -- The admins don't look at flagged scores immediately, and they don't post a reply to a flagging. I you really want to know, I suggest one of you, probably @kathy, send a PM to Slim. Last time I asked about the top 3 scores, the answer I got was that the top was legit, and the other 2 had been there a long time. In general, I don't think the admins check any score other than the top unless really pressed. -
Good luck @angryboy :)
Well I myself am doing a hard exam tomorrow, one I've been scared of for the last three years. The worst thing about it is that there's no way to learn for it, everything depends pretty much on luck. :/
BTW it's Star Wars day today :D so may the force be with you all on the River ;D
