@cosmo - Haha, actually at the moment we've got daylight until 10pm and it's getting brighter all the time :D And in the morning it's pretty much like daylight already at 4-5am :)
-
@lisko I suppose that are those "white nights" I once mentioned and asked if you had them in Finland.
-
Yep, and I answered to you when I understood what you were talking about :D It's nice, but it's pretty hard to sleep enough 'cause in the evening you don't feel tired at all and the feeling in the morning...you don't even want to know what it is :D
-
Cruising up to Norway and Iceland in June, can't wait to see the midnight sun.
He Who Does Not Fling hates the dark days, so the promise of 24 hour sunlight was the only way I could get him to go north (i.e. colder than here) on holiday. He hates cold too!
Just popped in between trying to do stuff other than flinging, and having a sly look to see if the ABS circus has arrived in town yet. -
Good morning everyone! Hope you're all well.
@cosmo2503 -- no need to worry about our bluebirds. We've "helped" raise plenty of generations over the last 20 years. Our current resident pair are Alpha Bluebirds with Superpowers! They raised three broods last summer, and the whole family overwintered at our feeder, something we had never seen before. Papa Bluebird is truly the most beautiful bluebird I have ever seen -- he's such a perfect, deep blue, and the rest of his markings are quite strong and clear. He stands out a mile, and he is very dominant. And Mama Bluebird is much more strongly marked than most female bluebirds, who tend to be rather dull. She is clearly a duchess or something; she's not exactly shy or retiring herself. :-)
We have been very careful to learn and follow the best-practice protocols for monitoring bluebird nest boxes over the years. Our current pair are quite used to us at this point -- they even wait patiently nearby with the chickadees when we are refilling the feeders. Well, the bluebirds are patient; the chickadees are so bold that they loudly scold and fuss at us to hurry up -- sometimes you can barely get them off the feeder long enough to refill it.
Mr. & Mrs. Bluebird are exceptionally accomplished nest builders and parents. They use the pine needs from the acre of woods that's part of our property and make gorgeous, perfectly constructed nests that they keep very tidy. This year, I had left the nest box open for a couple of weeks because some English sparrows were trying to settle in there, but once they had been discouraged, I cleaned out the box, inserted a couple blocks of wood that make a little platform so the bluebirds don't have to make a nest the full depth of the box, and closed the front. Within two weeks, our bluebirds had built their nest and laid thee eggs. Now we've got five, and she may yet lay one or even possibly two more eggs.
They won't hatch, however, until Mama decides the weather is warm enough. That could be anywhere from two to four weeks from now. Normally she doesn't lay the last egg or two until she's ready to let all the eggs incubate so they'll hatch together. With five eggs in there already, apparently she's comfortable with how the weather is trending, and since this is her third year in that box, I trust her judgment. Only three to four of the hatchlings will survive, because the nest is just not big enough to support more birds, and she always lays a couple extra eggs as insurance.
So we'll start putting out dried meal worms with the regular seed from now on. And get a couple extra houses up for the juveniles, who are probably too young to find their own mates and breed successfully yet, but just in case. Most of the juveniles will probably help raise this year's broods, as they learn parenting skills before establishing their own separate families.
If gravatar has updated the image, you should see the eggs snug in their nest in my avatar. -
Good morning @all, nice avatar @junkenmetel
-
Good morning @firebombbird. Thanks for the lovely compliment. Hope you're doing well today.
-
@junkenmetal I love your bluebird story and you new avatar!
-
I hope it gonna hatch some cute birds
-
Good morning @minh ! It must be night for you?
-
Yes, it's 8:30 pm in my place
-
Thank you @ABcrazy! I'm so glad you enjoyed my rambling; I'm very proud of my birds, as you can probably tell, so it's hard not to go on and on about them. Glad you like the new avatar. I was supposed to be sticking with a theme of using things I make as my avatar, but, well, this photo just seemed too perfect to pass up. :-)
@firebombird, I'm sure we will have a nest full of baby birds. Although at first they start out quite ugly (or extremely cute in a very ugly way -- hard to explain), and then they get sort of awkward looking as they get bigger and their feathers grow in, and then suddenly, overnight it seems, they are very cute indeed.
That's the point at which we don't check on them anymore for a week or so, to allow them to fledge and leave the nest on their own time, without accidentally being freightened out of the nest too soon.
And then we see them hanging around the feeders being fed by mama and paps, so we know it's time to check the nest again, and make sure it's in good shape and doesn't need any cleaning out or whatever. -
@junkenmetal love the bluebirds, and the avatar!
On a bird theme, just finished the book I was reading, looked in the bookcase and there was Birds Without Wings, which you mentioned in another post. Just read the first 30 pages (whilst I supposed to be doing other things) and I'm hooked already. It's years since I read it the first time. -
Hi @JunkenMetel! I just LOVE your new avatar and also the story about the bluebirds :D It's so great that some people still care about nature!
-
Hi, @Hunnybunny and @Lisko!
I'm so glad I managed to be entertaining this morning! And I'm so glad everyone else is enjoying my lovely little bluebird eggs, too!
@Hunnybunny -- how funny that we just carry on our conversations from one forum discussion to another! Birds without Wings is definitely amazing, and now if you're going to read it, I'll have to re-read it too.
@Lisko, I'm very big on all things nature-related!
Unfortunately, I have to head off to work now; hope to chat more with you all later. [[Hugs]]. -
@junkenmetel nice new avatar. Your bluebirds story is so lovely, it shows how much you really care for them. i didn't know that birds care about their "offsprings" as pair, I thought there is only female bird laying in the nest. It's always nice "talk" to you, have a nice day.
-
@JunkenMetel -- Love your new avatar! Any chance you can post pics of the parents? You obviously know a lot more than most people about birds. Very fascinating.
-
@cosmo2503 -- I play on iPad, and I have done the WMW levels that require tilting. Takes a bit of practice. I find it easier if you detach the cover and use both hands.
-
@FFB -- If you're still here, there was a post on the previous page suggesting you post your news about the Toons in the News and Rumors Forum. Since you don't get notices for the forum, you may want to read back to where you left each time you visit. Unfortunately (?) there's a lot more activity in the BP than people think when they comment that it is so quiet.
-
@justadoo444 -- Have you visited the Bloated Pig before? I recognize your name, but don't remember seeing you in here. Anyway, good to see you, and welcome to the BP if you haven't been here before.
-
Do you have any name for the birds
-
-
@FFB -- You probably want to use @JunkenMetel in your message. Although you don't get notifications, a lot of other people do if they were lucky enough to register for the forum without spaces or "-" in their names. JunkenMetel is at work right now (I think) and probably won't be back until you're asleep.
-
@ABCrazy -- Other people have said the same, and I sometimes resort to shaking my iPad, but I'm not sure it makes any difference. : )
-
Hi @mvnla2 - So should the notifications work on the forum too? 'cause I don't get any notification if someone tags me in a post here at the forum.
-
And I thought I was the only mad one who tilted and shook the iPad to no avail LOL
-
@mvnla2 anything that MIGHT help..... :-)
-
@Lisko -- You don't get any e-mail notifications in the forum? Maybe it only works if your username and nickname are the same, and you never changed them since you signed up for forum. They do usually take a while to arrive.
-
@ABcrazy I don't know if your statement can be prove but sometimes my natural reactions are to shake or tilt iPad to make structures fall.
-
@mvnla2 - I only get notifications when someone sends me a pm or comments my post in fe. the daily challenge or something like that. My username is same as my nickname, but only with the small L, but I still don't get any notifications from the forum. That's why I sometimes don't reply when someone asks something, 'cause I just don't see the post :/
-
@AMslimfordy, @BirdLeader any ideas for this problem
-
@FBB - I already asked slim about this in the other thread, I'm in no hurry with the problem, though it would be nice to know if I'm tagged somewhere :) But just so @everyone knows, if you ask something from me and I don't answer it's not about being rude but I just don't notice all the posts even when I try to read them all! :)
-
We all must wait for the new Forum system to be notified of any @mentions. The new Forum is a huge undertaking and will be wonderful once it is in place. We must practice patience regarding this matter.
-
If I might also explain something. The current Forum is a pre-made device powered by Vanilla. It is not integrated with the main site, except for the top menu bars. When in place, the new Forum and the main site will work as one.
-
This is all speculation. :D I am a speculative, logical human being.
-
@Ripsy - Hahaha, haven't you noticed that patience really isn't my strongest spot? :D
All we need is just a little patience... *sings*
OMG, I'm sssooooo hungry! The Little Gremlin went to sleep and I'm waiting for a pizza...Ok, the patience, I'm trying to remember it :D -
Hunnybunny pops in, "Anyone here?"
OB a glass of water only, please. Had two glasses of wine already, naughty, naughty, bunny! -
Hi @Hunnybunny! How are you today? :D I'm pretty much going to bed soon 'cause it's already over 10pm and I'll probably wake up before 6am.
-
@Lisko I'm fine. How's the terrorist?
-
@Hunnybunny - He's all fine, just a bit too much energy, though he's been sleeping for couple of hours already :D It really would be great to have even a part of that energy that he's got. Wake up at 6-7am run around the house like crazy until about 11am - sleep for couple of hours - Run around the house like crazy for the rest of the day :D
We went out for a moment today and I was going to dig up one dead rose away from the flowerbed, but as soon as I grabbed the spade, the terrorist took his spade and started to dig up all the other flowers so I decided to do it some other time :D -
@Lisko I never had kids, but have a fab niece, ten next month. She's an absolute handful, but loves shopping, cooking, shoes, all the things I love too.
Enjoy the terrorist while he's young. Niece grew up so quickly, savour every moment, he'll be a teenager, grunting instead of answering, before you blink :-/ -
Ah, OB, all alone again. Hunnybunny leaves BP, wishing all those who come in today, good morning, good afternoon, good night, and good flinging xx
-
@rdnzlrips82 @kathy -- Any chance you 2 would be interested in checking @SweetP's observation of self-destruction on ABO 16-5? She plays on Android. At most on iPad I have seen hints that something could happen.
SweetP -- Please join in if you are interested. I like to have some indication of frequency before I post, and variations between platforms seem to be even greater now than in the past. -
@mvnla2 I'll check it out? That's mine and dine?
-
@Kathy -- Yes, M&D. Thanks. Still haven't seen it on iPad. Who says IOS users get all the breaks anyway?
-
No problem @mvnla2 so far
1 minute screen
20 restarts
The only thing I've noticed so far is the little stone on the right top of left structure is shifted to the left every few restarts.. -
Another 20 restarts same result
Switching to 2 minute time out -
@Kathy -- Thanks! I hope @SweetP can give us some more data. I thought originally that she must mean right when she said left, but after 40 or 50 restarts I got a couple where it was the left stone that moved noticeably to the right and the stone blocks under the mustached pig also moved to the right.
