Fair enough, @amslimfordy. I hope all goes well with the leaderboards code, the forum code and your special little project. Did you know that your avatar's been nominated in the ABN Avatar contest:)
-
It's a bit counter intuitive to read bottom to top, isn't it?
-
What? I thought messages are already as you describe @leggy. Or do you mean something to do with the messages on the forum, and not on the main site?
-
@leggy, just re-re checked and all of my most recent personal messages are at the top. And whenever I get a new message it always is at the top???
-
Ohhhhh, yes, yes, yes... I know what you mean now, @leggy. Yeah, I recently had a really long conversation with @sunshine, in which I had to scroll right down the page for about a minute to get to the most recent chatter. Yeah, then I definitely agree with you, @amslimfordy, any thoughts?
-
I understand what you mean, @leggy. But it doesn't make sense to read a message thread bottom-to-top. That's not how people read.
-
Yeah, I suppose @amslimfordy, but we want the newest messages to be right at the top, because we often do not need to look back at previous messages???
-
@AMslimfordy I too have a lot of PMs that are so long, the scrolling down is a pain, however I understand what you are saying Slim, makes no sense to read backwards... But usually the last message is the message I want to read any way... BUT leggy and angermanagement, doing it upside down or how ever we want to call it, is not the solution, if you want to write back, you still need to scroll down to the bottom to the comment box!
So Slim to avoid the annoying scrolling... is there a way to add a "to bottom" link at the top some where and a "to top" somewhere down the bottom? Would help a lot thru out the whole site, I find myself scroling a lot on pages with much chatter. -
I think that @estar has found a perfect, and neutral, solution... @amslimfordy, thoughts;)
-
I'm not even going to respond to that comment @leggy. That's incredibly insulting. "My site my rules". I've never read a book starting with the bottom of the page.
E-Star's idea seems valid, though there are minor issues surrounding using markers. I think those could be overcome though. Or maybe pagination after a certain point -
@leggy @AMSlimfordy -- Kind of hate to get involved in this discussion, but Leggy made a valid point: On e-mail, which is really similar to the PM system, the most recent comment is at the top, and you scroll down to read older messages. In fact, if you want to reply, you hit a reply button at the top of the page, and you get to type in your reply without scrolling down. Guess you can count me as voting for newest and reply button at top in PMs. If this is too difficult to implement, I'll understand, but worth a thought.
-
I'm not sure where else I'm against you, but I'd guess you're referring to the Secret Santa nomination. If so, I explained the situation to you and thought all was cool, but apparently not.
Gmail threads emails by keeping them in order, newest at the bottom. Maybe collapsibility could be efficient. -
Who uses gmail? ; ) Didn't know that about gmail, but every other e-mail program I've used has newest at top.
-
Other email clients break emails: When you receive a reply, they quote the original but its held completely separately. To imitate this in our system, each message would initiate a whole new "thread", which would clog the inbox of users who PM often.
Maybe a better way of viewing PMs is like a forum thread, where viewability of the thread is private. The Forum Direct Message system works the same way, as does Twitter's and Facebook's. But I would agree (again) with E-Star that having a fast way of getting to the bottom would be good. For example, Twitter/Facebook automatically open DMs at the bottom of the page, and I think this technology is within grasp. -
PMs are private. I'm not sure what you want me to say, since I don't follow your examples.
-
How other email programs work is imo not the issue here, cause it isn't the same. They don't use a commentbox, which is at the bottom of the page. So, as I mentioned before, new message on top is not a solution to the scrolling problem. Still have to work your way to the bottom AND looking back at the latest message in order to get back to everything said in the latest PM would be a drag cause the new message would be on top! So my vote NO not new on top, YES for easy acces to the last PM. Suggestion of automatically being send to the commentbox would help a lot Slim, but if possible I would still like to have a little arrow (preferably on every page, have scrolling issues on walkthrough as well sometimes) at the bottom to get back to the menubar.
-
I think @E-Stars suggestion is pretty good option. Another way could be what's used in Facebook. Older messages stay on the top, but when you open the PM it automatically shows you the newest message on the bottom and there's also the commentbox.
-
@Lisko, that is exactly what Slim suggested in a couple of message above :D (still would love a "to menubar button" somewhere)
-
@E-Star Haha, yeah I just noticed that too :D I think that the FB -way and the menubar are both very good options. Personally I think it should be pretty much a neutral way to solve this, 'cause it should serve as much everyone, not so that some people would be pleased and others not :)
Personally I'm not for or against the change 'cause I don't use PM's so much, but IF I used those would be my favourite options haha :D -
I'm really sorry if this has already been discussed, but it would be great to have an option for "Mark all as read in this Thread." I'd really like to keep up with new forum posts, but as a newbie, you kind of have to clear the decks, as it were, and start from there. However, there were some threads, especially newer ones, that I would have liked to read first.
The current "Mark All as Read" seems kind of like a nuclear option in the forum. Which is a great thing to have for frequent/more seasoned members, but not always the tool one needs.
Also, I think it breaks basic user expectation that if you're reading a thread, Mark All As Read translates to: Mark All Posts in this section I'm browsing right now as read.
I've spent the last 12+ years as a User Experience designer in software and web, so that's my professional opinion, for what it's worth.
Again, so sorry if this has all been hashed out; somebody just fling a pig at me.
BTW, in general ABN is a great site, and I really enjoy it!
Thanks!

@JunkenMetel I completely agree. I thought this same thing when I first came here. The closest thing I have found is to just navigate to the last page of the thread and (I think) it does what you are asking.
Can you try this out and report back? If you aren't satisfied with this "circumventing" method, we may be able to look into it. We are hoping to migrate to a new forum in the not-too-distant future as well, and I'll try to keep this idea in mind when we do that as well! -
Lets all remember that the admins are asking for IDEAS. No one here says that every idea will be - or even can be - implemented. If your idea is not/can not be implemented than please just know you did what you could by suggesting it and move on.
-
Is there a possibility of creating the bar where you can change the page number you are on (on overall episode walkthrough pages), near the top of the page, aswell as the bottom ,@amslimfordy;)
-
Oh, and @amslimfordy, do you know that clicking on the news links at the bottom of the page does not work, is it a noted problem, or will it be fixed in the upocoming migration, etcetera...
-
I'd have to talk to BirdLeader about that. It's certainly possible, but I'm not sure what his view would be. The idea being that the closer to the top of the page, the more "valuable" the space. Like I said, I can chat.
Thanks for the report. This should be fixed tomorrow probably. -
Thanks, @amslimfordy;)
-
@amslimfordy,
There appears to be a spammer, kakudesi, has created 6 new discussions. (in this case, I use that term very lightly.) Since this is obvious spam, do you or the other admins have the ability to completely remove discussions from the forum? I know that discussions that don't get posts in them slowly move down the list, but in this case, they need to be wiped out. -
We completely remove them.
-
And another spammer we got...yangyu. Where are these coming from?
-
These spammer name look like chinese name, maybe attacker from China? Admin possible check IP?
-
Is there an error with grand total points on the leader boards? Mine shows an extra 2,545,160 points that my spreadsheet doesn`t. I use the spreadsheet to track my current scores, then enter my new highs from there. It's much faster that way for me.
-
@xanadude as far as I know Total score in GC = Total score ABN+total GE-Surf&Turf score
-
@Xanadude As cosmo said, our leaderboards do not claim to match GameCenter. In fact, our leaderboards should be MORE accurate than GameCenter, which is quite buggy and easily hacked. You are best off comparing your scores episode-by-episode, and assume that our computer can add them correctly :)
-
@AMslimfordy, that's an interesting way to clear one particular thread -- I'll try it now on this thread, since I'm now at the end.
Which brings me to a related issue -- I'd love an option that that let's me sort a thread with most recent first, either for one thread, or (best for me), for all threads. That's pretty common, and makes it much easier to see the most recent messages first. And then you can see which "direction" you're reading in. -
@AMslimfordy, I think your suggestion worked.
Which does have implications for my suggestion about the "direction" in which the posts in a thread are displayed. I'd have to draw out the user experience flow for each use case to figure out all the issues. (Sorry for the jargon; I do this kind of thing for a living -- it accidentally slips in sometimes when I'm only supposed to be playing, not working.)
But at least now, if I get behind on a long thread, I have a quick way to "catch up." Thanks! -
Glad it helped @JunkenMetel. I think our next major task for the site (at least near the top of the list) is to migrate the forums, so I'm not sure if we will make any efforts toa resorting threads option in this forum. Sorry.
-
I've noticed you can edit your own comments on the forum. Could this feature be added to the other commenting parts of ABN (i.e. posts, walkthroughs, etc.)?
-
Unfortunately, no. This is consciously disabled. If you make any significant errors, just let us know and we can take care of things.
-
Slim, that would be 90% of my posts lol
-
LOL Sparty, count me in as a "needing attention" commenter hahahaha poor Slim!
-
@amslimfordy, did you know that you haven't added the first 20 levels of Death Star to the AB SW Facebook overall walkthrough page:)
-
Not sure I understand @AngerManagement. We don't do separate walkthroughs for the Facebook version. We think that users will naturally migrate to the appropriate areas.
-
Yeah, I know, it just that you have added Tatooine, so I thought that would be the way you would lay it out, and maybe you forgot etc. So why have you got Tatooine, but no Death Star???
-
Oh, I think you misunderstood my statement, @amslimfordy. I meant that in the overall walkthrough page for all ABSW Facebook levels you have included Tatooine and the Tournament walkthroughs, but no Death Star;)
