FAQ Needs your input
  • Several people have asked for this, but I think the admins are way too overloaded, so I thought we could provide the input for a FAQ page, and the admins would only need to edit.

    What is AngryBirdsNest?

AngryBirdsNest is the ultimate Angry Birds community. Be sure to check the main page for the latest news about updates, releases, and walkthrouhs. AngryBirdsNest (aka ABN) offers the most comprehensive collection of Angry Birds walkthrough videos, guides, and tutorials anywhere... period.

ABN is truly a fan community: We all work together to help each other out, sharing strategies as well as competing. See comments under badges and ranking for a quick glimpse of the camaraderie on ABN.

    Rules
There are just a few simple rules to follow:
    1. Keep it clean. That means, no profanity and the like. Seriously, kids come here. To that end, administrators may edit comments that include profanity and the like, but continued use could result in blocking your account.
    2. Keep it relevant. This is an Angry Birds fan site, not a place to talk about the weather.
    3. Be nice. Now, that doesn't mean you can't brag and boast about how great you are. It just means you have to do it without being a jerk. Also remember that e-communication can be easily misinterpreted; spend the time to make your comment nice, and give the other person the benefit of the doubt.

    Who runs ABN?
See our bios for details. The team is frequently referred to as “the admins.” In short:
Bird Leader (BL) created the site and is the ultimate decision authority.
FujiToast (Fuji) is the main creator of the walkthrough videos.
AMslimfordy (Slim) is the chief moderator.

That can’t be all! Aren’t there more?
The admins all have superhuman powers when it comes to keeping this site running. We greatly rely on the ABN members, the passionate (and addicted) fans, to keep the site running day-to-day. Please join us and contribute!

    General

How to I sign up for AngryBirdsNest?
You may register to become a member of AngryBirdsNest via the register button on the right side of the golden navigation bar.

Do I need to sign up to comment on a page?
No, you can comment without being signed in. You need only enter a display name and an email address. However, if you are not signed in, the date/time of other comments will not be visible. We firmly believe that it is in the user's best interest to register and sign in.

What is the difference between user name and nickname?
Your user name is determined when you sign up for ABN. Once set, your user name cannot be changed. This name is appears in the URL of your profile.
Your nickname can be changed at any point. In most cases, your nickname is displayed when posting comments and on leaderboards.

How do I create/change my avatar / profile picture?
We have a short instructional post to help you with this. Note that your avatar is loyal to your email address and not necessarily your ABN account.

Can I be notified of new comments on a certain page? How can I adjust my subscriptions?
On the page of interest, navigate to the bottom of the page. In the comment box, you can write a comment and check the "Notify me of followup comments via email" box. You can also click on "Subscribe without commenting" to be notified of either followup or all new comments on that page.
At any point, you can manage your subscriptions on your personal subscriptions page. Note that in order to protect against spam, you now have to confirm your subscriptions to comments. We will send you an automated email with instructions.

    User Information

    What determines my rank?
Ranks depend on the number of points you have accumulated as a member of AngryBirdsNest.com. Five points are awarded on a 24-hour cycle for visiting the site while logged in, and five points are awarded for your first comment on any page. At this time, no points are awarded for forum or leaderboard activity, but perhaps in the future.
See the Badges and Ranking post for more information.

    How do I get badges?
Badges are awarded to valuable members of the AngryBirdsNest.com community. These can only be awarded manually by administrators.
See the Badges and Ranking post for more information.

How do I figure out what platform people are playing on?
Users have the option of setting their primary gaming platform in their profile. You can view a user's profile by clicking on their displayed name in either a comment or on the leaderboard. Alternatively, on the leaderboard, hovering over a user's name to display their platform in the tooltip.

    Mighty Eagle

Is the Mighty Eagle or Mighty Dragon available on my device?
As of March 2012, the Mighty Eagle is available for iOS, NOOK Color, T-Mobile Android devices, Chrome Beta, and Facebook. To see more specific details about the availability and usage of the Mighty Eagle, refer to the Mighty Eagle: Explained post.
The Mighty Dragon is a supplement for the Mighty Eagle in Angry Birds Seasons: Year of the Dragon. It is available for free on iOS, Android, and Symbian^3.

Does the Mighty Eagle (Mighty Dragon) add points to your score?
No. The Mighty Eagle has two functions: It allows you to pass a level you are stuck on, but it also lets you play for sort of mini-game to earn total destruction and an eagle feather.
For more information, refer to the Mighty Eagle: Explained post.

    Leaderboards

How do I enter scores on the leaderboards?
Head to the leaderboard's main page. There you can select your primary gaming device and choose the app for which you want to enter scores. Any platform can enter scores for any level, with only a few exceptions:
    • The "Seasons" episodes as appearing on the "Chrome Beta" app should not be entered due to discrepancies. However, Chrome users are welcome to enter scores from the original Angry Birds app (Poached Eggs, Mighty Hoax, etc.).
    • Facebook users should not enter their scores from the original Angry Birds app (Poached Eggs, Mighty Hoax). Instead, they may enter any scores from Surf and Turf, regardless of the use of power-ups.
    • Users should be aware of the distinction of Surf and Turf. If you achieved the score on Facebook, it should go on the Facebook leaderboard. If you achieved it in the original Angry Birds app (v2.1.0 or later), it should go on the original Angry Birds leaderboard.

How many scores do I need to enter? Any suggestions on how to do this quickly?
We suggest entering at least one episode worth of scores. Entering stray, random scores is commonly viewed as suspicious behavior, making any Top Scores seem less credible.
Unfortunately, there is no automatic way to transfer scores from the game to the leaderboard. Not only would this require a decryption system from Rovio, it would still not be perfect and foolproof. The easiest way to enter scores is to use two devices: The one you play on to view the score, and another to enter the scores on ABN.

Is there a required minimum score I should receive on a level before entering it on the leaderboard?
No. While many users only enter 3-star scores, entering all scores for a particular episode allows you to compare your scores against other ABN users. Ultimately, the choice is yours, but entering stray or random scores will raise flags.

I entered a few scores on the leaderboard and now they're gone and I didn't remove them. What gives?
There are a couple reasons why this could happen:
    1. From time to time we do purge the leaderboards of users who have only entered one or two scores. We recommend that you always enter at least five scores, but more is always better, especially if you don't want to seem suspicious.
    2. Your scores could have been flagged by the community and/or a moderator. Scores ARE NOT automatically removed, but if they do seems suspicious a moderator may have removed them. They may have also emailed your email address on file asking for proof (have you checked?).

I see a suspicious score on the leaderboard. What should I do?
It depends on the apparent severity of the offense, but the first course of action should be to look at the individual level leaderboard. To do this, click on the level number on the left side of the leaderboard. If the questionable score is only slightly above the pack, it is likely fine. If it still seems too high, you can either flag the score (click the flag on the right side of the leaderboard) or let us know via the comments section. Flagging is a silent and subtle alert which we check periodically but not frequently. Comments are not so silent and typically result in quick investigation.

How can I quickly get from the leaderboards to walkthrough videos?
Click on the "3-star" in the far-right column of the leaderboard.

    Walkthroughs

    Rules for walkthroughs
Please DO NOT leave comments listing your score without telling in detail how you got them, even if it is simply giving credit to an existing method. If you only want to enter your scores, please use the leaderboard.

Why can't I get even the average score by following the walkthrough?
The walkthroughs are intended to show you just one way to get three stars. It is typically the method that FujiToast (or whoever created the video) believes to be the most obvious or easiest solution. Sometimes there are alternate strategies and even videos posted in the walkthrough or leaderboard comments that will help you get a higher score. Most members do not have the ability to create videos, so cherish those who do. Written descriptions can be quite useful, so don't ignore them if you are competing for a high score.

How can I quickly find alternate strategies?
When posting an alternate strategy, the user should check 'alternate strategy' under the comment section. When posted, the thread background will be pale blue instead of white. So when looking for an alternate strategy in the comments, you can scroll down until you find a blue thread. This feature was implemented quite recently, so there may still be alternate strategies listed in white.

How can I quickly get from walkthroughs to the leaderboard?
There are a few relatively quick ways. In the textual description of the walkthrough, there is typically a link to the leaderboard. Otherwise, you can use the leaderboard pulldown menu in the main navigation bar in the header. Another method still is to click on the Top Score below the video.

Why do the walkthroughs for the older levels have so few comments?
The walkthroughs for the older levels were originally posted with several levels in a single video. The multi-level pages can be found at the end of the episode's listing. No new comments can be made, but you can see some alternative strategies explained.

    Forum

How do I create a new discussion in the forum?
Within the forum, click on the "Start a New Discussion" button in the top-right. There is an additional button below the list of discussions.

How can I contact another user directly?
Currently, this can only be done via the forum. Find a comment by the user you wish to contact, click on their username, then select "Send _____ a message". To see your messages at any time, click on "Inbox" within the forum.
We hope to extend this functionality to the main site. Until that time, not everyone knows of this existing functionality or checks it regularly.

    Bugs

See the list of level glitches and bugs for all known bugs by game and platform. You can report a bug that you see on the game, or see when bugs were fixed.
  • I have tweaked the format here.
  • Thank you! But don't you need to register separately on each site? Maybe this has changed?
  • Never did, to my knowledge. If you were registered on the main site, it follows to here.
  • So if you register first on the forum, does it transfer to the main site?
  • I believe so. It is the same URL route.
  • The forum seems to use your user name instead of your nickname. For example, my user name is gfish (without capitals), while my nickname is GFish (with capitals).
  • I have promoted this and would appreciate the contributions (thanks, @mvnla2). If we can fill this out a bit more I'll create a permanent page for it.
  • Good move, I completely missed that post.
    FAQ suggestion:
How to enter scores in the Leader Board ( compatible platforms, by episodes is better etc ... )
How to flag a suspicious score, and what to expect.
    How to upload your avatar.
  • More FAQ suggestion:
Q: How can I navigate between episode leaderboards and 3-star walkthroughs?
A: On the leaderboards, click the star in the most-right column at the level you want. At the walkthrough, click the 3-star minimum in the yellow bar.
Q: Do I need to sign up to comment on a page?
A: No, you can just enter a nickname and an e-mail adress in the 'write comment' section. However, signing up enables you to enter scores on the leaderboard and contribute at the forum.
Q: How do I create a discussion in the forum?
A: Click at the 'start a new discussion' button at the right under the dashboard.
  • Thanks for the question input, but how about adding answers?
My original idea was that experienced users could ask FAQs that they think would be useful AND write the answers, so that the admins would only need to edit. I wrote the questions and answers in the original post, and Slim made corrections / additions as necessary.
  • Even more suggestions:
    Q:How can I contact a user directly?
A:Go to the user's profile in the forum and click "Send __________ a message".
Q:How can I receive e-mails from ABN when a new comment is posted?
A:When commenting, you can check the check box that says subscribe to this post.
Q:How can I manage my subscriptions?
    A:Go to the subscriptions page.
  • @mvnla2 good idea!
  • Updated. Some that were mentioned I have combined, tweaked, or omitted. Obviously nothing personal against anyone, just creative license.
  • @all -- I think all the FAQs / answers as of now are entered above. Please let us know if not.
Thanks Slim. I added a few more, please see
Do I need to sign up to comment? -- Needs your answer
How many scores do I need to enter -- Needs your input
How to get from walkthrough to leaderboard -- Please review
How to create new forum discussion
Isn't there some way to mark changes?
  • Updated again.
What do you mean, mark changes?
  • In non-web-based apps (e.g. Word) you can choose "mark changes" and what you change will be marked. Much easier than writing a comment telling you what I changed.
    Thanks for you edits.
  • Nothing like that.
  • Q Is there a required minimum score I should receive on a level before entering into leaderboards?

A Many users do not report scores below the three star threshhold, however entering all scores for a particular episode allows members to proofread their work by comparing episode totals to those displayed in the game. Ultimately the choice is that of the member.
  • @Burbman I edited your FAQ slightly, see above.
  • @Slim -- I thought and would make text between red, so you could see what I added??? Anyway, there are 2 new FAQs -- one Burbman's and one on walkthroughs for old levels.
  • @mvnla2 - works for me, I also find it helpful to see if my episode total on the leaderboard matches my episode selection screen. Found a couple of typos that way.
  • @Burbman -- Ah, I didn't understand what you were saying, because I've never done that. Added that also.
  • @mvnla2 I've made some tweaks and removed your "r" tags.
  • Thanks, great improvement. Would still like to know if there is some way I can make new text red. didn't seem to work.
  • You can write via:

    <font color="red">Text you want to be red</font>

which yields: Text you want to be red
  • Was the "welcome to the forum" deleted? Did a quick search but didn't find it.
    Anyways.

There was a nice set of "rules" put together by BL about posting which could be applied to both the comments and forum sections.
Rules such as keep it relevant, no foul language etc ... you could also add that comments will be purged periodically.
  • I found it by assuming it as Discussion 1.

    Not a bad idea.
  • I am trying to incorporate Sal's suggestions, but doing it off-line. Back soon.
  • Actually, not really sure what to say about "comments will be purged periodically???"
    Done for now.
  • Hey Sal, this is the "welcome" thread you're looking for.

Comments aren't really purged, though we do purge SPAM comments from time to time. Sometimes we do remove comments and threads for many reasons.

From time to time we do purge the leaderboards of users who have only entered one or two scores. My suggestion is to always enter at least five scores, but more is always better, especially if you don't want to seem suspicious.
  • So should anything be added to FAQs?
  • This is awesome. thanks mvnla2! Maybe this should be the first thing new users see when they first sign up to AngryBirdsNest. The above information pops up when they return to the main screen
  • @mvnla2 I would add the info about the leaderboards.

    Q. I entered a few scores on the leaderboard and now they're gone and I didn't remove them. What gives?

  • BL and Slim -- See bigbrotherbird97 above for a nice-to-have.
Added BL's FAQ and some other changes (in red).
Is this ready for prime-time? Additional FAQs could be entered in comments on page.
  • Q: How can I quickly sort out alternate strategies from jibber-jabber?
A: When writing a alternate strategy, you can check 'alternate strategy' under the writing section. After posting, the thread will be pale blue instead of white. Also, when looking for a strategy in the comments, you can scroll down until you find a blue thread.
Note: this feature was implemented quite recently, so older strategies may miss the blue tag
  • BL and Slim -- In your "spare time" ; ) , making it easier to find alternate strategies would be nice. Is there a way you could sort for items listed as alternates? Is there a way for the user to go back and mark alternates? I can't see either of you finding the time to go through all the comments and mark alternates.
  • 1) Good idea. Perhaps some option to show only strategy threads? Hrm....
    2) Unfortunately, nothing can be done from a user perspective. It would have to be done by admins. And yes, this would be a painfully long task. If somehow this gets done, perhaps 1 would be very viable.
  • Maybe you should add information about our bugs list. Users can view our list of bugs on all Angry Birds Games on all platforms. You can report a bug that you see on the game, or see when other bugs were fixed.
  • Will add as soon as I've finished new levels.
  • @slim Why isn't Bugs displayed as an H2 header?
  • @mvnla2 Have you placed your H2 tags correctly?

    Test

  • Apparently you have to do font color inside h2; sort of a nuisance.
  • It makes sense. There's not much of a hierarchy in HTML, but you do need to declare levels before doing any other formatting.
  • Thanks again for everyone's hard work on this. It's on my to-do list to move this to a more formal page. I just need to create the database and admin tools to maintain it. Probably a couple weeks out.
  • Hey everyone, I've created the first draft of what is now the official AngryBirdsNest FAQ! I thank you all on the actual FAQ page, but I want to thank you again here. Your contributions and hard work made this possible.

I am "unannouncing" (not a real word I know) this thread now, as going forward it would be best to post questions and answers via the page's comments.

    Thanks again!
  • Whohoo! It's finally official, but will never be complete. My thanks to everyone also for contributions. Don't remember who first suggested this (not me), but great idea.
  • @blahalb09 Good call. Added to page.
  • I think we should make an option to have users report problems they might see on the site a little bit eaiser. Right now, if i see minor errors or things that have to be change, i have to go through so many fourms to look for the page. I know that there is a search option, but I would like the forum to become more visiable and eaiser to get to.
  • You can report issues you see on the page itself as well.
