Wired series about the Physics of Angry Birds Page 1

I stumbled upon some interesting articles from Wired, where a physics professor talks about the science behind our favorite activity : bird throwing. While fairly long and full of equations they do give some interesting insights behind the behaviour of the birds. It does confirm things that most hardcore players would already have inferred from playing. There are however some failry interesting findings, here's a recap of some of the topics :
http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/10/physics-of-angry-birds/
- red bird horizontal speed is constant throughout it's travel (not slowed down by air friction)
- Inferred from measuring gravity, if AB happens on earth, small red bird is 70cm large and slingshot 4.9m high.
http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2011/05/is-the-launch-speed-in-angry-birds-constant/
- bird launch velocity doesn't depend on launch angle (which, added to constant horizontal speed proves the feeling that if you aim to something at the same height as the slingshot, whatever the angle you use [as long as it's enough to get rid of gravity] you'll always land at the same spot)
http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/10/does-the-angry-blue-bird-multiply-its-mass/
- unsplit blue bird weighs 60 times less than red
- a single split blue bird makes 10 times more damage than an unsplit one. We all intuitively knew it was more powerful, but never figured THAT much :) That gives a fully split blue half the momentum power of a red (not taking into account how they interact with materials, but that seems about right)

I'll come back to reading this one later, green angered me last night I just can't look at it.
http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2011/11/physics-of-the-yellow-angry-bird/
I think this post need discussion. Let me quote : "But I am going out on a limb and I am going to say that the magnitude of the velocity after the tap is always 30 m/s."
This really doesn't seem right to me. It always seemed to me that early tapping yellow gave it more speed than late tapping it.
A bit below in "Weird acceleration" the author says this though "it seems like the acceleration is much lower when the yellow bird is moving down before the tap." which is something we all felt playing. So I guess the "constant 30m/s as long as you're shooting somewhat up" is not that simple.
Anyway, enjoy those articles, those are some great reads. Kudos to Rhett Allain the author. -

Wow that's pretty cool stuff :D I always assumed that when you split the blue bird it did less damage. Know I won't be able to look at it the same way again

using the trajectories of White Bird to explain the angle between two curves

Since we're digging up AB and Piggies physics, be sure to check out the following:

http://www.angrybirdsnest.com/forum/discussion/756/angry-birds-physics-and-random-chance
The second one is now quite old and predates current understanding of variable conditions in AB and BPs.
Also note that Rhett Allain has new Wired article on size of bad piggies.
