Average Scores: Just where do these numbers come from Page 1
-
I've been re-playing each level to reach and post the average score as shown on the leaderboards. I'm currently on level 6-15 of Danger Above in Angry Birds. I have already completed Seasons. After a lot of frustration trying to reach the so-called average scores, I was wondering just how these numbers are determined. I find it hard to believe that some (for instance, the level referenced above) levels had the majority of players score above the listed numbers. The level 6-15 has an average of 126,510 and the best I've been able to avhieve has been in the 120,xxx through 125,xxx, but I have yet to break 126,xxx and I'm a fairly decent player. There are a few levels I have abandoned because they were unreachable after 100's of attempts. It's so frustrating.
So where do these averages come from? Are they actually based on something or are they made up? -

It's an average of all of the scores users have entered.
-
If that were the case, why is achieving the average so difficult? A good player should be able to get the average fairly often.
-
Try and use the strategies posted by users on the walkthrough page. There are different ways to pass the level.
-
but we're not all great players (no offeince)

Yeah, people like manu malin are extremely good at AB and are willing to share their strategies so that others can get high scores.
-
it's hard for me to get above because I'm not that good of a player

An average is a simple calculation.
Take the total points scored for a level and divide it by the number of players who entered all those points. It's very straightforward and simple. I know that they sometimes seem very high, but if the site is using this simple formula, the average should be nothing but accurate.
If 1 million points were entered for a level, by 500 players, the average would be 2000 points, even though some people would have higher scores and some would have lower.
Maybe @amslimfordy can explain it better, but there's nothing odd about this. Hope I helped. -
In ABO walktrhoughs, there are a lot of videos by E-Star, that show how to get an above average score. These are very good. You could also try videos on YouTube by Yuriyigolkin. The videos posted by the admins at the top of the walkthroughs generally show you how to get just above 3*s, and those strategies frequently don't work for above average. Lots of ABN members don't consider a level complete until they've gotten above average. Of course, that drives the average up. Good Luck!

no worries @ohforfive. I thought I was good until I joined up here and looked at the average scores ;) The huge averages are just a testament to the general effectiveness of the site and how good everyone here is or has become by chatting about the game and sharing tips and tricks.
I'm depressingly below average. But every time I push myself to better the average, the average score goes up, and I find myself sometimes having just scraped an average score, thinking the task is complete, then revisiting to have to improve constantly.
I think this is a tough ask for new players but a great idea for hatchlings, regular addicts and vets alike to keep pushing each other along to improve their scores :) -
There's nothing fancy here. It is indeed a pure average calculation for all scores entered on a given level.
-
Then I must not be as good as I thought. What a downer!

@Ohforfive. You're the same place many of were not so long ago. But we accepted the challenge and have used all the resources available at ABN to get above average on many levels. Did you know you can compare your leaderboard to another member's? Pick someone in the top 10 on any episode, and you will be amazed. Getting above average creates another level to the game, just like the ME did, and helps fill in the gaps between new releases. P.S. Try AB Space also, especially the Danger Zone if you want a real challenge. Good Luck.

DZ really is a challenge. Just getting to average in those levels is a real monster, but quite fulfilling :)

I wonder if there has been any thought of using the median score rather than the mathmatical average. Seems like this would keep random mispostings/malicious scores from having much effect on anything except high score.
-
I know how you feel, @ohforfive ! I'm doing the same thing you are- going back and working on getting all my scores at LEAST to the average line. Once I've hit the reset button 70 times or so trying to get that magic score on a level, I often find myself thinking, "I am only trying to make it to the AVERAGE score. Why is this so difficult?!" And then I look at the HIGH score and usually mutter some... choice... words under my breath. (-:
Keep flinging, you'll get there! And, if you can't, just skip that level and go back to it when the smoke stops pouring out of your ears.
