Angry Birds Challenge
Welcome to the Angry Birds Challenge (beta)! Every day there will be a new level selected for you to play. Play for fun or use it as an excuse to improve your current score. A great goal is to try and beat the “Average” score below. Already done that? Then pork up and try to fling your way into the “Top 50″! Done that too?! Then take on the ultimate task and shoot for the “Highscore”! There is also a layer of competition here, as this page is connected to the leaderboard, so if you can improve your score you may also improve your rank. That said, don’t enter lower scores here.
As usual, we’ll be tweaking and honing this in the weeks to follow. For now, enjoy and let us know what you think in the comments below (feedback only please — we will work on a way for you to talk about your scores). Lastly, a BIG shout out to @rdnzlrips82 for the inspiration and his tireless work over at the The Bloated Pig.

Will this show who improved the most over the course of the tournament? That would give bragging rights to “most improved” as well as someone who already was doing well and moved up just a little on the leader board.
Daily “most improved” would be really cool.
Very cool concept – definitely will drive traffic to the site and make it even more engaging…
I agree, hopefully they can change the top 50 chart to just show scores reported within the challenge period, and have improvement from beginning in a second sortable column so users could compare their progress on either measure.
There’s an inherent issue with “most improved” that won’t allow it. But we do have some sorts of ideas for the future.
Suggestion… Can you show starting average and starting high and then final average and final high so we can see exactly what effect all the playing had on these scores? Otherwise, unless you noted them at the very beginning of the day you don’t really know how they changed… Do you know what I mean?
I agree with the idea but the current system does not allow it. Would have to make several changes to the way the leaderboard database works. But we have considered this idea.
Small update on this. The Tweet that is sent out at level-change includes the average score, so you can use that as the “starting average”.
Is there a trophy for the highest score recorded for the day, the greatest improvement during the day, or no trophy at all?
For now, no. But we have such ideas in the back of our minds.
I have some ideas for how these could potentially be calculated. When you are ready, PM me if you want to discuss them.
I like the Improved list, It fits what my descripton of the highest daily score would have been. I know there are no date or time stamps on the leaderboard itself, but is it possible to take a snapshot of the individual level leaderboard at the time the challenge is posted, then have the system run a macro to subtract that beginning score from each user who posts a new score to determine improvement?
I will be putting together a post / forum thread here soon that details a bunch of the features that we will be adding. Right now I’m just focused on making sure the scheduling and leaderboard integration works right.

That sounds about right. There is a nifty site called Time.is where you can check this.

Yes, 2am UTC = 10pm EST = 7pm PST.
Are the LOTDs chosen randomly or are they going to go in order? (since today’s was 1-1, will tomorrow be 1-2?)
If I may? When the level changes Tuesday night, it will become random. The levels before then were requested in The Bloated Pig forum discussion.
And the Admins honored those requests for us.

Might be worth while to add a comment in top post reminding people that leaderboards are for scores without powerups.
Facebook scores cannot be entered at all.
It’s impossible to get a score with no ending 0. Fix it plz.

There’s nothing to fix. This is already a requirement (except with Space).
This is fun! I don’t have much time to play in the summer, but it’s fun to try the different levels and see if I get any better!
I just had an idea. I don’t know how hard it would be to implement, but how about awarding those who crack the top 50, 40, and so on, including most improved, with a specific amount of site points for achieving specific milestones on the challenge level?
I like this idea. Then maybe I could make up some points I’ve missed for spending all day and night at The Bloated Pig.
This is very very cool – thank you! The great thing is that I can enter and compare my scores for some elder levels that way as well – since I’m quite new to ABN I didn’t entered all the scores for episodes/levels before ABSpace to the leaderbords. Thanks again very much – for this challenge and for this awesome website at all :)

That simply proves what most of us have long believed:
1. AB addiction is generally harmless. A caveat as a professional PSA: Please don’t fling and drive!!
2. When ya gotta fling, ya gotta fling!! Just be sure, if you’re on the road, to park safely first!!

No, you didn’t do anything wrong. As an anti-spamming safety measure, any comment that includes more than one URL (note that an @ mention counts as a URL) requires administrative moderation. It’s to keep everyone on the site safe from spam :)
We typically approve such comments as soon as we see them, so usually just hang tight for a few minutes.

Underneath the time remaining section. There is a little box that says “Your last score entered for this level is …” Hit the change button and a little box pops up. Enter your new score there. Or click on the Leaderboard link in the BP LOTD section. :)

Just a question for the forum. How do you submit your scores – prove them? I have completed all AB games, w/ 3 stars. Do I take screenshots, just post them on the honor system. How does it work. I am an AF Col retiring in 2 days, so I know honor sys, but although I’ve been reading the Nest for a yr or so, I just subscribed today. Sorry, if the question is dumb, but don’t know. I’m an older user, but hooked 100% and play every day to increase scoresd and find different methods to play each level. Thanks.

You submit a screenshot only upon request and it’s usually to prove a high score.
You can manually enter your scores on your leader board. For more information about the site and “how-to” tutorials, read the F.A.Q.

With so many levels and so many users, we just don’t have the time, effort, or space for a thousand screenshots, so the leaderboards are heavily on the honor system. However, to ensure their legitimacy, we often ask the top scorers to submit screenshots and strategies to justify their scores.
Are the challenges only available at certain times. I know a new challenge appears every 24 hours, but how long is the challenge available for? where do you access it?
You don’t need special access. The challenge is the “level of the day”, and lasts 24hrs.
Quite right. We simply hand-pick one level per day starting at 10pm Eastern Time (USA) for users to “focus” on. Anyone with an account is welcome to compete and share strategies.
I wonder if we’ll see an increase in scores in The Challenge as people roll out their new Power Up scores. Hopefully the precautions the admins are taking will limit this.
That’s a good point @playdbird, however I expect we just won’t see any Challenge levels from ABO for awhile, as the admins pick them.
And I have faith that whatever they put in place to protect the leaderboards will apply here.
We have them pre-picked. The one that shows in an hour or so is actually supposed to be an ABo level. We may nix it.

Bill, I am fairly new to the website and although I have completed AB, Rio, Seasons, Space for Mac, all levels, all 3 stars, except for a couple of eggs in the original AB that I can’t figure out. The accordion, and the one with all the birds. But I digress. You say the Hoax level today is your favorite to ck your writeup. I would love to better the score, but don’t know where to go to read your strategy. Can you tell me where to go? Thanks. I’m an older lady obsessed fan of AB, and play all four in Mac, Now started in my Kindle, I have it on my iPod and iPhone. The only platform I’ve completed all the games with 3stars is Mac. Working on the others.

Hey, I haven’t been paying much attention to the daily challenge, but in reviewing the daily improvements, something caught my eye. It appears that first time scores entered will be at / near the top of the list each day. How about instead of grouping improved scores, and new scores, they get their own listing.
I’m not sure I’m following the idea. Can you elaborate?
@frozndevl is correct. I will explain……. I hadn’t previously posted my scores at all for “The Big Setup” which is today’s challenge. I had previously scored 121000 on 11-1, but of course your computer didn’t know that since I didn’t post it. Today I improved to 132000. So…….I actually improved my score by 11000, BUT I got credit for “improving” by 132000. People who had previously posted their scores should be the ones listed in the top 50, not people like me who didn’t previously post their scores at all. I am happy, however, to be #12 on the regular leader board!

@AMslimfordy I just noticed something interesting with today’s challenge. First thing I always to is look to see what my score is, before I open the app to work it, and today, I saw that I was way above the average and not far off the high, so looked at the top 50 leaderboard. Taking a hard look at it, I see that @HappyShake and I are the only PC users. Haven’t looked at the other leaderboards, but do you suppose that means that PC are harder to get high scores? Maybe there just aren’t as many strickly PC users as other platforms? Hmmm. Just thought was kinda strange.
I think there are just far more iOS players on ABN than otherwise.
