Angry Birds Ultimate Backup Tutorial for all Platforms

As with any computer program, updating any of the Angry Birds apps has some inherent risks. No matter what platform your own — iOS, Android, Intellivision — when you update an app a lot goes on behind the scenes. 99% of the time, everything works as desired, but sometimes things don’t. The goal of this guide is to help you in the event something goes horribly wrong. In some cases, these backup methods can ALSO be used to transfer your progress to another device. This way you don’t have to start from scratch. That said, as of now transferring progress only really works when the devices are the same (e.g. iOS to iOS, for example).

Universal Precaution: Do not remove (cut) any files! Here and throughout, we always say “copy”, which is what you should be doing: Select the files desired and copy/paste them to your desired backup location.

We don’t know the process for absolutely every device, but we will gladly add information if you have it! Leave a comment below.

General Information

Before delving into the specifics for each platform, we should begin by announcing the stars of the show: the .lua files! These nifty little encrypted files contain all of your progress, including stars, scores, feathers, and unlocked levels. The availability and exact location of these files vary by both app and platform, which is why we have so many sections below.

When manually backing up your progress, the following files are what you’ll be copying:

  • highscores.lua
  • settings.lua
  • {purchases}.lua (if applicable, such as Space and Star Wars)
  • highscores_<hash>.lua and settings_<hash>.lua (if applicable via Rovio Accounts; learn more!)

In general, we do not encourage transfers across different operating systems. Between like systems (iOS to iOS, Android to Android, PC to PC) poses absolutely no risk, but between platforms can be risky since not all information is compatible. Many users report no problem, but we are aware of several problems in doing this, so proceed at your own risk. The only 100% verified transfer between distinct platforms is iOS <–> Mac.

Update for Rovio Accounts: A “Cloud Sync” system has recently been unveiled in the Angry Birds universe. This system is called Rovio Accounts and does exactly what most users want: Automatic online storage of your progress! Unfortunately, no system is perfect, so we still recommend manually backing up your data. We outline how to do that in the release post for Rovio Accounts.

iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch

Update (12 August 2014): Our iOS backup & transfer guide has been updated to reflect changes made over the past few years. It’s an awesome resource for any Apple aficionado addicted to Angry Birds. There’s a brand new video which walks you through the basics of backing up and transferring your progress manually.

As always with iOS devices, we encourage you to backup via iTunes before messing around with data files on your own. If you are looking to recover data, we have a tutorial for how to restore your device using iTunes.

Note: Transferring between the “Standard Definition” and “High Definition” versions of iOS apps works perfectly fine, though you must purchase the apps separately.

Windows PC

The following are directions on how to backup the Angry Birds apps from download.angrybirds.com. Again, you’ll want to copy the following files: highscores.lua, settings.lua, and {purchases}.lua if applicable. The more important question is “where” the heck are these files? The filepath may differ a little based on your version of Windows, but the typical paths are:

Windows XP = C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\Rovio (or Rovio Entertainment Ltd)\
Windows Vista or 7 = C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Rovio (or Rovio Entertainment Ltd)\
Windows 8 = see below

Some of these folders may be hidden, so typing manually into the address bar should help when necessary. Alternatively, you can change your folders settings so that hidden files and folders become visible.

Once you’ve accessed the correct directory copy the contents to another folder. This will act as your backup. If you want to be extra safe you can also copy the files to an external drive or use a service like Dropbox.

Disclaimer: The data files for iOS and PC are indeed different than Windows. If you try to transfer files from iOS to PC or vice-versa, things may not work correctly. The most obvious reason is that iOS keeps track of things like achievements and in-app purchases, while PC keeps track of whether you have activated the full version or not. These concepts are not inter-compatible.

Mac

The data files for Mac have moved around in recent updates, so we apologize if things have moved again. As with the previous versions, the files of interest are highscores.lua, settings.lua, and {purchases}.lua if applicable. Depending on your version of OS X, the files should be located in the following paths:

On Mac OS 10.6.6, Snow Leopard:
ABo, Rio, Seasons, Space, Star Wars: ~/Library/ApplicationSupport/com.rovio.mac.{app}/

On Mac OS 10.7, Lion:
ABo and Rio: ~/Library/ApplicationSupport/com.rovio.mac.{app}/
Seasons and Space: ~/Library/Containers/com.rovio.mac.{app}/Data/Library/ApplicationSupport/ com.rovio.mac.{app}/

Mac and iOS: You should be able to transfer data between Apple systems without much difficulty. The Mac data files and iOS data files are compatible with each other. If this interests you, the iOS transfer guide has a video at the end regarding Mac, though again the filepath may be a bit different and you should include settings.lua in your process. There may be some side-effects with some iOS-exclusive things, such as achievements and the Mighty Eagle.

Android

Update (28 May 2013): We have just published a brand new, extremely detailed and comprehensive guide for backing up progress on both rooted and non-rooted Android devices, valid through the Jelly Bean operating system and possibly beyond! The article is a bit lengthy and the process may be a bit challenging depending on your device, but it’s certainly worthwhile if you need to backup or transfer from your Droid. Click here for the guide!

Windows 8 Store

Unfortunately, no admins here have a Windows 8 computer. In fact, Slim may be the only one who has PC versions of Angry Birds, though we of course support all users. Some users have reported issues when running Rovio’s standalone games (from download.angrybirds.com) on Windows 8 devices. Instead, most games are available via the Windows 8 Store. Backing up your progress here is as easy as locating the data files:

Space: C:\Users\{user}\AppData\Local\Packages\1ED5AEA5.AngryBirdsSpace_p2gbknwb5d8r2\RoamingState
Star Wars: C:\Users\{user}\AppData\Local\Packages\1ED5AEA5.AngryBirdsBlack_p2gbknwb5d8r2\LocalState

Chrome, Google+ and other HTML5 Mini-Games

There are a lot of variants for these directions, so we initially point you toward our Chrome backup and sync guide. That post is extraordinarily specific and comprehensive for backing up Chrome, broken down both by web browser and by operating system. Fortunately, most of the other web apps — such as “Angry Birds Volcano” and “Pistachios” — store their data in precisely the same way. Follow the applicable filepath as found in the Chrome backup guide. Instead of looking for a file resembling “chrome.angrybirds.com”, look for files resembling the web app you are interested in. For a few examples, here are a few filenames for web apps using the Chrome browser (where # means the numbers may vary a bit):

Volcano = http_fazer##-dot-latest-dot-angrybirds-fazer.appspot.com_#.localstorage
Pistachio = http_angrybirds-pistachios.appspot.com_#.localstorage

Important!

Many of the newest web based versions of Angry Birds actually use Flash, instead of HTML5. These versions don’t store your progress locally — or at least not in a way that is accessible. Rather, your progress is stored in the cloud, so no backup should be necessary.

Since angry birds seasons updated to version 3.1.1 2days ago on my galaxy tab 2, I am now not able to backup the files for it.
From what ive found on a few sites its linked to the fact that ive have jelly bean on it.
Seems a bit crazy to me as the other birds games still backup ok.
Has anybody got an app to do the back up yet without having to root the device plz?
Thanks for your help

For andriod, [Angry Birds backup 2 sd] is updated with ABSW, not sure ABSp paid version and status Jelly Bean.

By Bullos

I’ve just tried the method mentioned above for my new HTC one X +
But because there is no sd card (or even a slot) in this phone, i can’t copy my savegames onto it.
There also is no access to the map (data/data/com.rovio.angrybirds…) because it’s restriscted.
Anyone any ideas how to work around this one?
Don’t wanna do all those maps again!!

Does anyone know how to backup Space and Star Wars for Windows 8 from the Windows 8 store?

By CeeDog99

OK, after some searching figured out how to do this on Windows 8. Getting the file names from this site helped, since searching for Rovio came up blank. I was able to pull the 3 files from a semi-dead hard drive and replace on new Windows 8 install and got my progress back, here is the location (not sure if the ID numbers are consistent for all):

C:\Users\PROFILENAME\AppData\Local\Packages\1ED5AEA5.AngryBirdsBlack_p2gbknwb5d8r2\LocalState

I had already 3 starred all levels and was not looking forward to starting over when they update game to add Hoth.

Strange that ABSpace synced this information to my profile so I didn’t have to go through this like for ABSW.

By Mikewo

CeeDog99 – Thanks! That also worked for me. I was able to get back my perfect score on a new Windows 8 Device. Wish they would have implemented syncing on the Win8 version.

Just transferred Angry Birds(+seasons) data from Android to iPhone!! NBD. It can be done! I just used the Angry Birds backup to SD app on android. Took those files, renamed them to just highscores.lua and settings.lua. Use diskaid (following the instructions under the ipod section above) and overwrite the files on the iphone. I didn’t copy over the dates.lua file for seasons though – not sure what that is for.

Rank: Sling God with 26055 points

The dates.lua were generated for the christmas and summer pignic episodes. Levels were rolled out like an Advent Calendar.

I didn’t backup any of my Angry Birds games before discontinuing service on my old phone (not rooted) Android and don’t have the backup app installed. Is there a way to back the games up on the old phone to put on my new Android device?

Try to download the backup app. Just search ‘angry birds backup’

By RAIN

Just copied over ABSW to the iPad. I had 70 Mighty Falcons on my iPhone 5 and when I copied over the two .lua files in iexplorer, everything came over perfectly except for the 70 falcons. What is wrong? I retried several times to no avail.

Now, is there a way to only copy the “daily rewards” in Angry Birds Rio and Original AB to another platform? That is, without copying the progress?

Hi there,

My mom had told me I would have to get a new iMac every 8 to 10 years once it wears down by then. When I put Angry Birds (original), Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Space back on the next iMac, would I copy those file folders onto a USB Stick (I have one) and then after I install those 3 Angry Bird games from the App Store on the next Imac, I would put them in the Application Support folder (within the Library area that is)?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

We would advice that you beat one level on the new Mac first. That way, you can find the (new) files and overwrite them with the (old/transferred) files from your thumb drive.

Note that the exact file path may vary based on which version of OSX you are running, so this will help minimize any potential mistakes.

Rank: Gold Flinger with 9345 points

Ok, so I would play the first level in the first episode on the original Angry Birds and the first in episode on Angry Birds Space.

What about for Angry Birds Seasons? There is 3 seasons now. Perhaps play the first level for each of those 3 halloween episodes?

Edit: Meant to click reply instead of making new comment…sorry about that lol

Bad Piggies 1.3.0 also have new folder in same folder/directory. These folders contain .MSI File (Windows Installer Package) required for installation.

In previous version of Angry Birds & Bad Piggies, .MSI Files are automatically deleted after extraction from .EXE installer files & installation of game.

But in latest versions of Seasons, Star Wars & Bad Piggies, MSI files are saved in C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming

To anyone who can help out. I’ve gone through and updated a bit of this guide and need the following information.

(1) What Angry Birds apps are available in the Windows 8 Store? To my knowledge, it’s Space & Star Wars only at this time.

(2) What are the filepaths to the data files? CeeDog99 stated that Star Wars was located at
C:\Users\PROFILENAME\AppData\Local\Packages\1ED5AEA5.AngryBirdsBlack_p2gbknwb5d8r2\LocalState
but
(a) that may have changed in recent updates and
(b) I’d still like to know the path for Space, et. al.

(2) AB Space v1.3.0 (‘Pig Dipper’ update is not available yet) File Path – C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\Packages\1ED5AEA5.AngryBirdsSpace_p2gbknwb5d8r2\RoamingState

AB Star Wars v1.3.0 (Latest) file Path – C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\Packages\1ED5AEA5.AngryBirdsBlack_p2gbknwb5d8r2\LocalState

You should backup ALL the .lua files i.e. [highscores.lua, settings.lua]

When you want to restore your progress, For Example, In case of AB Space, Copy & Replace these lua files in directory : C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Roaming\Rovio\Angry Birds Space

I just built the ultimate in backup routines.

I make a living as an Excel VB programmer, among other things. I made a list in Excel of all the files needed to back up all AB games, then created backup folders in Dropbox. Then, I wrote a VB script to run down the list and copy each file. One button click, and all my files are backed up in Dropbox.

I did this on a PC, but the concept should work on other platforms. If you are a programmer, you should be able to figure it out. If you are not a programmer, this would be a great starter project. Programming is fun!!!

In Excel on a PC, you have to have a Microsoft Scripting Runtime reference (Tools/References). Then use FileCopy oldfile, newfile.

Sub CopyToBackup()
'setup: existing Rovio folder file name in one column, Dropbox target file name in the adjacent column to the right
'start with the cursor at the top of the existing Rovio folder file name

Do While ActiveCell.Value " "
FileCopy ActiveCell.Value, ActiveCell.Offset(0, 1).Value
ActiveCell.Offset(1, 0).Activate
Loop
End Sub

Got a weird experience today. Until yet I played AB on 2 Ipad’s, one Ipad 2 and one Ipad 3. I’m gonna give the Ipad 2 a student, so tought to use routines. First I created a full backup of both of them, then restored the Ipad 2 contents to the Ipad 3.
Transfering the data from Ipad 2 to Ipad 3 went wrong:
All the games were transferred including the corresponding scores. All, upon the ABO Short Fuse episode. Each time it said on te Ipad 3 that there were no scores entered for it – had scores upon 26-9, incl. feathers. I used Iexplore and Diskaid to transfer left data (I thought). Finally got the error: there were 2 hughscore.lua’s, one as mentioned, the other with a large number of characters in it’s name. i.E: highscore76KhFgujgfg.lua. Remove the present highscore.lua from the device, copy the highscoreKhgkjGju.lua to highscore.lua. This worked. Found it, because the size of both the highscore files weren’t equal.
The other way, moving scores from Ipad 2 to Ipad 3 worked fine (just tried it for fun). Now waiting for a new Ipad and keeping fingers crossed, cause the only thing I have is a backup of the (now overwritten Ipad 3).

I play my AB games on an iPad 2 loaned from my school, and it’s almost time to turn it back in. I downloaded iExplorer and DiskAid (in case one didn’t work). I opened them and connected the iPad to my Mac (which is running OS X 10.9 Mavericks). I then got this message in iTunes:

“This iPad is supervised by another computer and cannot be used with this computer.”

When I try to open it in DiskAid, it asks me if I want to trust this computer, and a message pops up on my iPad. I press “trust” on the iPad and “Continue” in DiskAid, but the message asking if I want to trust the computer keeps popping up in DiskAid, but nothing else happens on the iPad.
When I try to open it in iExplorer, absolutely nothing shows up.

Does this mean I can’t transfer any of the data onto this computer? Would I have to go to the school computers and transfer the data there?

Thanks!

Time to backup everyone, unless you want to be in the unhappy situation I’m in: my last backup was 6 months ago. Gaah!!! If you don’t backup regularly you WILL be punished. How many times do I need to “learn” this?
Ever see the “Blue Screen of Death” on a PC? Well, I now know what the equivalent is on an iPad 2: icons instructing you to connect to itunes using the power cable. No other clues or instructions. Was able to find some info on the web, and eventually (2 complete tries at the process and 2 hrs so far), was able to bring the iPad back to life. Still updating apps, so don’t know how much more needs to be done.

I would recommend you discuss this with Rovio, John. They may be able to pull some data for you.

After a year of using a galaxy s4 I sadly dropped it and cracked the screen. Happily, I had insurance and was able to replace it with the exact same phone for cheap! My question: do I have to go through all this backing up business or will everything transfer to my new phone since it’s the same?

Jeanne I don’t have an Android device, so I’m no authority, but it should restore fine. Did you have some kind of cloud backup, or a sim card? Here’s a link to an Android-specific backup guide. That may have a bit more info that’s relevant to you.

While i realize you were trying to be helpful, Kelani, my first thought in response to your comment was DUH! I looked at the backup guide and it’s very convoluted and complex. I was hoping for help from someone who actually does know about Android, not someone telling me to look at the guide. I guess I’ll just take my chances and hope for the best because I’m just not comfortable mucking around like that in the inner workings of something this technical.

@amslimfordy

DEEPANSHU: you need to be much more especific and detailed when posting.
