Angry Birds Sync Wishlist

As we draw closer to the release of the Angry Birds Sync — aka, “Bird Brains” (yes, we made that up) or ABSS — I thought it might be worth putting together my wishlist of what I hope we might see. But first, a little history:

In the beginning Angry Birds didn’t really have to worry a whole lot about users needing to move their game data around. Users pretty much just played on whatever device they had, which for us early adopters, was an iPhone or iPod Touch. That meant if you bought a new iPhone all you had to do was set it up and sync it with an old iTunes backup and you were good-to-go. Life was simple!

Fast-forward a few months and Angry Birds started popping up EVERYWHERE — first on Nokia, then iPad, Android, Palm, Symbian, Mac, PC, and then the consoles! And users aren’t just switching devices now, they are switching full platforms and many are actually playing on MULTIPLE devices. It’s not unreasonable for a player to have a phone, tablet, computer and game console. I know I do!

Even though I have Angry Birds on all these devices I don’t play regularly on all of them because my games’ data doesn’t match up. That’s a huge problem because 3-starring every single level of Angry Birds and it’s offspring is a huge investment — not to mention — a challenge (and that doesn’t even factor in the Golden Eggs, Hidden Fruit, Total Destruction, etc.). This pretty much forces any serious player to play on a single device — that is — unless you feel like playing around with some files in the background.

Fortunately, Rovio realized a long time ago that this is a problem and a purported Angry Birds Sync System (please call it Bird Brains) is on the way. As of writing the last update about this was via Twitter on April 10th when someone asked Rovio when they might see it. Their response? “We are working hard on that, before summer is the plan.” Well, the arrival of summer is drawing near and I’ve got some high hopes.

Okay, that was a little longer than I expected. Without further ado, my wishlist:

ANGRY BIRDS ACCOUNT

I think this is pretty accepted as what we will most likely see. Your Bird Brains account would be in the cloud and hold all your scores, progress and stats. Open up Angry Birds on any device and it would first ask you for your username and password, not unlike Game Center on iOS devices. At this point the Angry Birds Sync would compare your current game with the game save on the server. If the one on the server is newer it would download those newer files. Obviously, it would work in the background and be more elegant than I described, but that is the gist of what I’d imagine we’ll see.

OFF-LINE STORAGE

I think it’s safe to assume that Angry Birds Sync would not require you to always be online, as it would be pretty worthless otherwise. While offline the game would keep track of your progress on your device as it always has, then sync up next time you had a connection. During this sync process the hope would be that your progress would sync up seamlessly. In other words, your scores would be checked against each other and the highest would move to the top, whether that high was on your device or the server.

BACKUPS / REVISION HISTORY

As many of you probably know no sync system is perfect. There are going to be collisions and if the software doesn’t know how to handle them that could mean problems. I think a safeguard against this would be the ability to restore previous revisions (i.e. older data). They wouldn’t have to store a ton of revisions to make this worthwhile, as most of the time you’ll know a problem exists fairly quickly. To me, the ability to restore from an older backup would give me some additional peace of mind when syncing my data on the cloud.

CROSS-PLATFORM SYNC

This may be the biggest, most useful feature to most people. The ability to play on whatever type of device you choose. Apple, Android, Nokia, Symbian, Palm, Computers, Web, you name it. It would be great not to be stuck with one brand or device-type simply because you have a horribly unhealthy Angry Birds Addiction. You know who you are! The ability to be able to play whenever and on whatever is one that will do nothing but increase that addiction, but if this happens, I know I won’t be complaining. Note, this includes syncing between different flavors of the same edition (e.g. Angry Birds to Angry Birds HD).

ACHIEVEMENTS FOR ALL

I doubt this will be included at launch and it may be wrapped into a future update, but I thought it was worth including nonetheless. As most of you know, achievements are currently only available on iOS devices, which means a large percentage of the Angry Birds community is left out. I know Rovio realizes this and I’m sure they’ll do something about it…eventually (I’d love to be proven wrong).

IN-DEPTH STATS & API

Are any of you familiar with Smash Bros for the Nintendo Gaming Systems dating all the way back to the Nintendo 64? Well since at LEAST the GameCube version, Smash Bros has had an absolutely fantastic Stat Section in the game. It could tell you how long you’ve played, what character you’ve played most, how many kills you had, weapon usage, and so on. Today, a lot of games do this, but Smash Bros is always the one that sticks out in my mind. My friends and I would frequently cruise this section and compare each others stats. How cool would it be to have this info at your finger tips in Angry Birds?! Birds Flown, Pigs Popped, Blocks Smashed, Time Spent, Most played level, and so on.

On a personal note, not only would I like to see this data in-game, but it would be even better if the were accessible via an API! I know most of you aren’t programmers so I won’t bore you with the details of this, but it would take community sites like AngryBirdsNest to a whole new level.

So there you have it, that is my wish list as it pertains to Angry Birds Sync. I feel I must stress, I have NO inside information, so take it for what it’s worth. Here’s to the future of Angry Birds!

Great ideas hope your wishlist comes true! :D

And there could be a face or fingerprint or some kind of recognition to be performed every day so people don’t just cheat off of friends’ scores.

You need a camera or special tech for that but good idea.

is this needed if i switch from my IPhone 3G to a new IPhone 4? or i can do that without loosing all 3 games data (note that i have game center activated on my 3G as well)

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

No you can switch between iOS devices quite easily. On one hand, you can sync your 3Gs to your iTunes account and then restore your 4 from the 3Gs. On the other hand, you can manually transfer the settings.lua and highscores.lua files manually. I believe the former is easier but if you want info on the latter, feel free to ask.

By Dri

I had angry birds on my iPhone, and now I just bought an iPad. I’ve synched it with my iTunes, but it didn’t load any of the levels/stars I’ve unlocked – this for all 3 apps (angry birds, seasons and rio)
How can I do that?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

There’s a good method found in the forum here. I can personally vouch for the successful transfer. Works for all six AB games (AB, Seasons, Rio, and each free). Make sure you transfer both settings and highscores .lua files.

By Dri

I still have them on my iPhone, heheheh

Hi AMslimfordy, i just got my IPHONE 4 today, and to make things clear i have an Iphone 3G (not 3GS). so can i do the SYNC thing with these 2 devices as well?

i will sell the IPHONE 3G and stay on the IPHONE 4, but i would hate tp have to do all the work again for the angry birds and other games. how do i restore from 3g to 4? they are on different firmware :( … i dont want to jailbreak my IPHONE 4 so the .LUA method is not possible … what do suggest?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

This method does NOT require Jailbreak at all. I transferred my data from iPhone 3Gs to iPad 2 using this method.

Before you transfer, download the games on your new device and play 1 level. This will create all necessary files. Then copy the settings.lua and highscores.lua files from your old device to the new.

I’ve read about Angry Birds on a blog review. What other devices can I play this game except my computer? How about my mobile?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

Sure, there are quite a few mobile devices that run Angry Birds. iOS is probably the most common in the US (iPhone / iPad). Most Android-powered touchscreen phones are compatible. There are a few others as well (Nokia / Palm) but their list is rather short.

Your wish list is great! I recently lost all of my scores on my phone and have had to restart Rio and Seasons for the third time. I had 3 stars and all golden eggs on original version, as well, but it seemed too daunting to replay all of those levels since I have that version on my netbook as well (except for last level of Ham’em High and FB). It would be great to have it all in one place.
Bird Brains is the absolute best name choice.
Looking forward to this for sure!

I desperately need this feature and cant wait as my CPU crashed and I lost the backup so if I sync with my new cpu I lose all my scores
they would need to make sure all versions had the same number of birds I know that 3-5 on the windows version has more birds then the ios version. I am not sure if there are any more or not. To fix this would be simple just add the extra birds to the version with the lowest amount of birds. For my example 3-5 I think the windows version has 2 more birds so on the ipod version they would add 2 birds to the level and give everyone who has completed it 20k more points to make them the same

Here’s one thing I was thinking.

On some of the devices I play Angry Birds on, I have three-star ranks on levels that don’t have three-star ranks on other devices. What the sync should do is only compare the scores of two of more consoles, and whichever is the highest (of a specific level) of all the units, is the one placed onto every unit the player uses, replacing the lower-scored one or two star ranking scores. Of course, it should also unlock levels already completed on other devices.

Rank: Out of this World with 2555 points
By Codebreak (@codebreak)

It would defiantly do that because that would be the device that you play on the most.

By prowse

NO! I think separate device scores should remain separated – small devices, medium (pad-sized0, consoles, and web apps – they all force different skill levels! I rip right through all three Angry Birds levels in Chrome, but it took me much longer to get those for the Droid! At least I wish we should be able to chose whether or not our scores are separated or aggregated (or the ability to switch/compare back and forth!)

I think you’re in the minority here, but you definitely raise a valid point. Thanks for contributing.

Peace of mind, not peace of mind. And what about the problem of some versions not having all the levels. For example, you can’t sync your Chrome Angry Birds with your Android phone. Or your Mighty Eagle data from iPhone to PC. How do you think that’ll work?

Rank: Sling God with 37110 points
By Bird Leader (@birdleader)

Thanks! Fixed the spelling error. The issue with versions now having the same level would likely be handled — speculating here — by syncing by level, so if a level doesn’t exist yet it’s not synced. Ideally, I think updates should be released a little closer together as not to exacerbate this issue. Hard to say. I think the Mighty Eagle data will sync as well, which should be pretty straight forward. Again, I am just speculating here and have no inside info.

I was sad when I re-installed Windows and my Angry Birds data was gone ): I’d finished the game, got 3 stars on part one, two, part of three, and gotten most of the Chrome balls. I thought chrome would just sync it with my data but I guess not *sigh* oh well. Hopefully this comes through soon so if I decide to play again I’ll be able to sync. I only play the Chrome version so won’t be a device difference problem but I have mobile version on a USB that I carry everywhere and Chrome on various computers and different OS in each one. or even better! Cloud storage along with local storage of data for all your Chrome apps. Maybe this isn’t the place to talk about that but just a thought.

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

I don’t think the Sync will initially apply to Chrome, since the game is indeed different. Specifically, no golden eggs in Chrome and no Chrome Logos in the other versions. Chrome Beta stores its data within your web browser, but I agree that you should be able to save progress to a Google Account if you have one.

By Josh

I know this is more about iOS devices than AB, but the syncing got me wondering about something, I have a itouch 4g, but lets say I get a iphone 4g later, would I be able to transfer my apps on my itouch onto the iphone. I would appreciate it if you could answer.

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points

Yes, that’s done simply through iTunes. Sync your iTouch to iTunes, then when you setup your iPhone you can sync it to the existing backup file.

My iPhone 4 has some stuck pixels so I am getting it replaced, but I’m wondering, what will happen with all my data on Angry Birds. Will I have to completely start over and redownload all my AB apps?

Will Apple be able to copy EVERYTHING from my curent phone to my new one? And put all 135 apps in their folders, put my notes, contacts, pics, vids, texts, etc on my new phone?

Rank: Sling God with 37110 points

First, to be safe sure to sync with iTunes right before replacing your phone. They should be able to transfer most everything over I would imagine, but I would definitely ask them to confirm. If you want to be extra safe follow our instructions here and backup your Angry Birds LUA files first.

1 – I just ruined my iphone (water damage) and I had not synched it for at least a week. Is all my Ab data/progress lost?

2 – do we know if this Synch system will synch scores between platforms? specifically between Chrome and iphone?

thanks!

Rank: Sling God with 37110 points
By Bird Leader (@birdleader)

1. You should be able to restore a backup from iTunes and recover the progress you had made up until that point.
2. It should sync across platforms, but not sure if Chrome will be included in that. My guess is it won’t, but I’d love to be wrong.

I had to replace my phone. I had not synched my old phone for over a month.. (i know..)

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

The problem is there is no remote server to save the data yet — only local storage.

Let’s be honest: Rovio was a very very small company and hit the jackpot with a massively successful game. I don’t think Rovio ever expected to have this much traffic, so now they are in the process of expanding.

As well as the standard levels, they also need to include scores and statuses for Golden Eggs and other bonus levels.

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

I think a score counter would be good for Golden Eggs in ABo (little tougher on Seasons) but I don’t think there should be a “25/26” counter or something like that. It’s more illusive without.

When I look at the options to backup to iCloud, Angry Birds has some data that it says will go to the iCloud. I haven’t turned it on on my new 4S yet… Is that a potential sync?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

I don’t think so. At least not yet. I believe that is simply the same backup file that is created when you would sync on iTunes with cable.

By Zarko

I am praying that with the release of iCloud, we will finally get the feature which allows us to store data from all devices & browsers in one place. If this doesn’t happen any time soon than I will be certain it never will. I just don’t see how anybody would want to play the game on two or more different platforms and not be able to pick up with their current progress!?

One very frustrated customer…

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

While iCloud may help that point for iOS, how does it help with PC, Android, NOOK Color, Symbian and others? There is plenty more that needs to be done.

By Zarko

Very true but iOS being the most popular platform for AB it was only natural to assume that they will have the ‘central hub’ at least for iOS. Now that there are so many different platforms, it seems like that ‘sync’ will never be available as if they had the plans they would introduce the sync feature and then build around it instead of introducing the game to many different platforms and then building the central hub. It just looks so ilogical.

They are losing very easy money as I am sure there are plenty of people like myself who have the game on iPhone but don’t want to purchase iPad version as you can not play it on both devices simultaneously without going over the same levels again.

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points

Though you can transfer data between iOS devices relatively easily. I still think we will see the Sync System. It’s just a matter of having all devices able to register to an online database.
