Angry Birds Space Pig Dipper Now Available with Power Ups!

At long last, Angry Birds Space v1.4.0 has landed! We were the first to report this update over a month ago, and Rovio has heavily teased the release over the past 48 hours or so. Included in Rovio’s tease as a trailer, which you can view on the page just linked.

This is a major update that includes an overwhelming amount of new content, so let’s not waste any time. Pig Dipper is now available for iOS, PC, Mac, and Android via Google Play and the Amazon Appstore.

This update includes:

  • 30 space/aquatic levels! Battle those pesky green pigs with a mixture of space/gravity physics and water/buoyancy physics. We warn you in advance that these can be a bit tricky to master, but have patience and keep at it!
  • One new Eggsteroid! For now, we will leave its location a mystery, but be sure to keep an eye out and check out our Complete Eggsteroids Guide, which will be updated soon.
  • Three new Antenna Egg levels! As expected, there is one for levels 6-1 through 6-10, one for 6-11 through 6-20, and one for 6-21 through 6-30.
  • One new Sardine Can level! This is unlocked by obtaining all 30 feathers using the Space Eagle. This walkthrough will take us a bit more time to get to, but please be patient.
  • Power Ups! There is far too much to say here, so it will have its own section below.
  • Four new iOS achievements!
  • Pro Tip! The clams hold pearls, and pearls are valuable. Break open a clam to reveal 3000 points!
  • Daily Reward! The daily reward has been slightly tweaked. Instead of receiving a Space Eagle daily, you will receive either one Power Up, one Space Eagle, or five Space Eagles!

Power Ups (iOS/Android only)

As we said above, there is a lot of stuff that needs to be said. Foremost, please do not post any misgivings about Power Ups in this thread. We have a specific thread in the forum that Rovio monitors. Your opinions will be better-heard there.

Next, before we get into the Power Ups themselves, we regret to inform users that the price of the Space Eagle has changed. Prices are now 20 for $1.99, 50 for $4.99, 110 for $9.99, and 225 for $19.99. C’est la vie.

OK, now onto the good stuff. There have been three Power Ups added to Angry Birds Space:

  • Flock of Birds — Immediately launches four smaller versions of the current bird from the slingshot, stemming from the original release post and radiating outwards.
  • Space Eggs — Act just as they do in the Antenna Egg levels, creating a miniature black hole (small area of extreme low pressure) wherever it is triggered.
  • Pig Puffers — Well, they puff pigs, I suppose. Call for this Power Up, and all pigs will inflate. Note that this is particularly effective against underwater pigs.

Now for prices. Purchasing an individual Power Up, you will receive 30 for $1.99, 80 for $4.99, 170 for $9.99, and 400 for $19.99. If you purchase the three in a bundle, you will receive 10 each for $1.99, 30 each for $4.99, 65 each for $9.99, and 140 each for $19.99.

And the best news of all. We are thrilled — nay, ECSTATIC — that scores obtained using Power Ups are distinguished as such! Your scores with Power Ups are only displayed if you have activated Power Ups on your particular try, and are displayed with a lightning bolt icon. Otherwise, playing without Power Ups only displays scores obtained without Power Ups. I know it’s a bit confusing, but check out the video at the top of the post to see more.

That said, please DO NOT enter scores obtained using Power Ups on our leaderboards. Now that there is distinction, we may adjust our leaderboards to eventually include such scores, but for the time being, they are not permitted.

Great update, but I still don’t see how the scores are differentiated. The lightning bolt is only there until you complete the level. So if I prefer to beat all 30 levels and enter scores after I can’t tell the difference when I got back. I’d have to record scores on my own with each level completed. Am I missing something here?

@lostgreybird I know it’s confusing, but I tried to do my best in that paragraph. I’m putting a video online in a few minutes that will display the difference.

The idea is: If you are playing without Power Ups, you will only see non-Power Up scores. As soon as you call for a Power Up, you will see highscore with Power Ups.

In other words, after using a Power Up (the equivalent of bird Viagra(TM) apparently) you get a huge Harry-Potter-esque lightning bolt tattooed to your forehead for all the world to see. Only this time it’s the work of The Company That Must Not Be Named with a lot of help from [insert your name here]. When you call for a power up (except Pig Puffer) YOu have to actually USE it to see you previous score. For example, you have to launch the space egg to see your power-up score. You also cannot use them on boss fights.

The lighning sign is good for people who use power-ups. Otherwise you would not know in which levels you already have a power-up score. And for people who don’t use power-ups, it won’t be disturbing because they will never see this sign.

The only thing that is missing is another 3 stars in each level for when you got the stars with power-ups. After a few hours, you don’t know any more in which levels you got 3 stars by using power-ups and in which levels you got 3 stars without power-ups.

Very, very cool update. I like that all episode is included, now I can get all achievements in GC and there is no need to wait until next update. The best of all is that scores are distinguished, Now I understand why I couldn’t see both scores on one screen. Let’s hope this would be possible to do in ABO and ABR.
It is also very amusing gameplay, I played first 8 levels and find that first level is the hardest to 3 star, although it was presented in trailer I was in pain untill finally 3 stared it. Others are very much like Piglantis.

What do you think: why did Rovio only make a separate leaderboard for power-up scores in AB Space, but not in original AB or in AB Rio?

And does anybody know if you can also get the score addict achievement if your power-up score has reached the required amount of points or only the non power-up score?

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points

1) I think this will be added.

2) Haven’t heard from anyone yet.

Rank: Master Slinger with 7305 points
By surfcow (@surfcow)

High-IQ-ish answer: the software development process involves a balancing/juggling act between business requirements, customer expectations and technology planning. It’s usually very structured and tight due to this complex nature. Rovio, like most developers, emphasize rigorous testing/quality assurance (QA). As code is compiled, tested, approved or rejected for a trip back through the loop – often referred to as an iterative process – proposed modifications that are not essential to meeting the specific release requirements defined in advance (features or capabilities. to you and I) are usually delayed until a future version. I’m making an educated guess that Rovio wanted to wait until they were fairly sure this split/score solution rolled out in PD is a hit among the AB faithful (and hopefully bug-free) before investing the time and money to implement in all the AB apps — except perhaps the ones that have always included Power Ups (P/Ups), such as AB Friends on Facebook. Or I could be completely off-track and clueless. Oh well.
My suggestion: give this thing a chance by trying it out, even if you are one of the non-believers, then let Rovio know whether its an acceptable solution to the P/Up Conundrum. Another alternative: quit playing Angry Birds and go back to playing something like checkers or chess. I’d rather have that lightning bolt tattoo on my forehead, thanks. Aloha.

Slim,
Am I missing something. I completed Big dipper level 2 with a power up. And it did show on the level completion screen the lightning bolt. It was only a 1 star as I wasted a few birds to make sure it would not be a high score.

Then I went on to 3 star it and get a new high score. All fine and good.
Went to level 3, then 4. Had to do something else and went back to play AB Space.
On the level selection screen, it shows a lightning bolt for level 2. Now I know I got my high score withOUT using power ups. To me, that implies that the high score was obtained using a power up or am i just confused?

http://angrybir.de/WEvFBD

When I go back into the level, it does show my non-power up high score but the lightning bolt on the level selection screen bothers me as that was NOT how i got my high score.

Rank: Sling God with 32120 points
By AMslimfordy (@amslimfordy)

No, you aren’t missing anything. Despite beating your Power Up score “legitimately”, the game will log your highest Power Up score still. If you look at the Episode Selection screen, you’ll have some value on the PU Total Score. I have the same thing.

Rank: Avian Overlord with 16440 points
By burbman (@burbman)

@Sparty – think of it like the levels that show a feather if a space eagle has been used. The lighning bolt is just an indicator that a power up score exists for that level, not necessarily that the high score was achieved using that method.

Rank: Master Slinger with 7205 points
By TruckDriver (@truckdriver)

There is a bit of a wrinkle here when it comes to the stars, however. For instance, I played level 1:

1) without PU’s and got a 2-star score.
2) WITH PU’s and got a 3-star score.
3) again WITHOUT PU’s, got a 2-star score.

In the case of the third scenario, even though I only got a 2-star score, at the end of the count up, it displayed my 2-star high score with the graphic showing that I achieved 3-stars on the level. Apparently there is no PU differentiation with regard to earning level stars, and it doesn’t seem to matter how you got them, either with or without PU’s, as they are only awarded once.

It’s great to see Rovio doing an episode so cool and calm right after a hot, fiery one.

Good thing about PC, there’s no hassle without the powerups, and you can 3-star the levels ‘legitimately’, and then move on to iOS/Android for powerups…

We are not aware of if or when this episode will be made available for other platforms. (Update: Now available as a $0.99 USD in-app purchase for Android via Google Play and the Amazon Appstore.)

This update sure has created some serious thinking for score addict players. It was interesting to read Slim’s comment about there possibly, eventually, being separate scoreboards which was what I suggested/requested when PUPs first appeared. (I know ABN has been patiently waiting/hoping for these separate scores so fully understand why they’re “ECSTATIC” about this.)

Re the PUPs themselves, I have been against them from the start BUT finally used one on the facebook Star Wars game in order to 3 star a level. I know you can still get 3 stars without using PUPs but can’t help thinking that Rovio is now creating new games/levels that require PUPs to achieve reasonable scores let along high scores. Hopefully we will always be able to play without them because using PUPs makes passing the levels rather easy and a lot of us prefer a challenge. The only reason I resorted to using it for the facebook game was because you have life and time limits as the tournaments only go for 1 week.

After reading the above posts re what happens when you do and don’t use PUPs, my safest way around it will be to play Space on my PC for my leaderboard scores and only use PUPs (to see what they’re like) when playing Space on my iPad. This way I’ll never get any scores mixed up. Now all I’ve got to do is catch up – I’ve still not finished Seasons, ABO, Rio, or Star Wars!

Rank: Gold Flinger with 9830 points
By Chris (@chriss)

My guess is that for score addict, you have to reach the required score either with your PU score or with your non PU score.

If you wanna do it with PUs, you have to use a PU in every single level! So you will need at least 30 PUs for each episode. And it has to be a good score. So I think it is still easier to get the score addict achievement without using PUs.

Played a few levels in the new Pig Dipper addition to Space and they are a lot of fun. Seems like a hybrid game between Space and Piglantis. Like the action of the Red Bird, appears faster and stronger. Have not used a power up previously but people change and who knows what the future will bring. If Rovio can truely separate the scores that would be great because we all just gained another game within the game. Think of the possibilities: 3 star power up scores, 3 star power up average scores, a whole new set of leader boards for power ups and all the new power up strategies. Imagine, a non power score and a power up score. They just doubled the amount of AB games one could play. That would be amazing.

Rank: Gold Flinger with 9830 points
By Chris (@chriss)

It won’t be easy to enter your scores in a power-up leaderboard. In order to see your PU scores again, you have to use another PU. So you will have to use (and waste!) another 200 power-ups only to see and enter your power-up scores.

This is one of the most impressive AB updates in a while in the sense that it’s very challenging to figure out the strategy for some of the levels (unlike Wonderham or the second chapter of Birdday Party, which basically put up flashing neon signs telling you where to shoot the birds). That said, I’m not actually enjoying it all that much, which is strange, because Piglantis was one of my favorites. I think it just gets a little too complicated to figure out the trajectories with the water and the gravity, and it can be very annoying when pigs sink underwater but don’t pop. Perhaps time and practice will make my impressions more positive, but for now I’m not much of a fan.

@AustinRHL – I think the piggies slowly sinking…will they won’t they maybe it’ll pop I think it’s going to pop I think its gonna maybe it’ll hit that piece of stone and pop oh man it didn’t pop…is one of the new standard Rovio heartbreakers we all know. They’re a devious bunch.

What really frosts me is when they settle gently to the bottom and then go to sleep. For some reason that annoys me more than when they laugh at me.

I played several levels of Pig Dipper today, and it is good, although a little finicky when you have to control the birds on the water. As @wrw01 already, it’s like a cross between the mechanics of both Space and Atlantis from Seasons.

I’m just freaked out by the “fish-planets,” especially the piranha-like one, because they at times blink their eyes. One can be thankful they’re NPCs anyway.

I also forgot to mentioned, and if you notice the level select screen above, there’s a link to the website of Ocean Elders. Rovio surely is doing a lot of charity work nowadays, cooperating with a lot of organizations. I noted this even some of their tweets, saying they’re donating profits of their ABSW Cancer shirts to SU2C.

I love that roulette style daily rewards selection, it gives impression that rewards are given by random chance not programmed to give the least usefull ones. Looks better then slot machine in ABO and deffinitely better then “nothing alike” in ABR.

Sorry to be a downer but AB Space constantly crashes on SGS2 after this latest update.

Try restarting your SGS2 to clear up some RAM.

By Shodan

Gave that a try but still crashes. App seems to use about 50Meg of RAM and phone has 400Meg+ free so I don’t think it’s related to RAM.

Does anyone know if Rovio changed the award schedule in Space to once each calendar day instead of once each 24 hours since you last opened game?

By wawan

In PC data files you can see pictures of the power ups, is this just a standard file? because space eagle picture was added in this files from beginning of the game, but hoping on an IAP for PC.

All systems have the same images in data files. It’s not suggestive of anything in the near future.

There are a lot of games on PC with IAP systems, its not impossible, I hope rovio is working on it.

So we’ve got powerups in ABO,Rio,Space, presumably SW in near future…except Seasons.Well,if pups are added to ABS…
1.Go to Cherry Blossom.Activate Birdquake.Nothing whatsoever collapsed, pigs positively gleeing,’cause the Japanese Pigs get three small and one big BQs every week, they’re all accustomed to that, and they’ve made preparations.
2.Sling Scopes in Piglantis actually show the ultra complex curvelinear motion of how birds break the surface of the ocean, plummet into it and float up again(in one word, bobbing)
