Fresh on the heels of the “They’re coming…” teaser image, Rovio has announced that “Angry Birds Space” is set to blast off on March 22nd, 2012. This is not an update, but rather, it’s a completely new version of Angry Birds. Rovio’s lunar outpost for this epic launch is: space.angrybirds.com.
This will be Rovio’s fourth paid version of Angry Birds and the first to deviate from the traditional physics we all know so well. That said, this Summer Pignic Golden Egg level might give us a small glimpse as to what to expect; however, I’m sure the physics have been much refined and improved since then.
It looks like Yahoo scored an exclusive on this one, as they have an article with some details. You can also find some official details in Rovio’s press kit. Said details are a bit vague, but below are some highlights:
- You will be flinging birds on alien planets while contending with zero gravity. This opens up new gameplay elements like slow-motion puzzles and “lightspeed” destruction.”
- Angry Birds Space will include new birds alongside familiar ones, sporting new super powers.
- The three star rating system will remain.
- Both NASA and National Geographic are launch partners.
- On March 22nd Rovio will simultaneously launch in mobile gaming channels, retail, and an animation channel. Rovio states this is the first time this has ever been done for a mobile game. (See updates below for more info.)

Updates!
Feb. 22nd, 2012 – Thanks to these awesome Angry Birds Space stickers (above) on we’ve got our first glimpse at some of the revamped birds and pigs in Angry Birds Space. I don’t know about you guys, but these look awesome! We were asked to take the stickers down.
Feb. 23rd, 2012 – New authentic footage from Rovio’s personal space exploration reveals a giant slingshot on the moon. While the video doesn’t say much (watch on YouTube), it does reveal that information will be revealed on March 8th.
Feb. 25th, 2012 – Rovio has confirmed that the March 22nd release date applies to iOS, Android, PC, and Mac. (We guess PC means the standalone version from Rovio’s site, and Android means both Market and Amazon, but this is just our guess.)
Feb. 27th, 2012 – Houston, we have a slingshot. The latest video (above) says that Angry Birds Space will be “launching with the Samsung Galaxy Note”. (Remember the Advent Challenge?) Not entirely sure what this means though, since the Note was released some months ago. Any ideas?
Mar. 5th, 2012 – The third teaser has been released. It seems like the pigs will indeed be making their appearance in AB:Space.

Never assume there will be a sale. Assume there won’t, and perhaps we will be pleasantly surprised.

That partnership is already paying dividends, as the graphic at the Rovio website is stunning. However, I do have a small astrophysical quibble with it. If you’re on the surface of the moon in full bright lunar, taking a picture of earth, the sun should swamp out the feeble light from distant stars, and you shouldn’t be seeing them in the picture.
Not that it will prevent me from acquiring the game, but I just had to set the record straight.
I know what you mean. On the other hand, who are we to poke at reality. I’ve never seen green pigs using frying pans to cook eggs either.

The Summer Pignic levels WERE odd, but only because they threw is off our personal strategies. We’ll get used to it. It will exercise our minds.

I was just going to say that I saw the video, but I see you beat me to it. Can’t wait.
Can’t wait! Just a quibble — I don’t think the game will involve “new” physics, just a new value of g (gravity) that varies by planet, and is essentially 0 when the birds are in outer space (which I bet they will be some of the time). Not sure why the bird in the teaser has no iris?? Also, what on earth does Hawkman (mentioned in one of the articles) have to do with this???
About the bird eyes not having an iris, think of a suit helm with lights shinig out of the eye openings. Kind of like Iron Man.

My guesses:
— Mighty Eagle himself would appear in a later update. If the birds are there, I don’t think replacing the Mighty Eagle with a different analogue is necessary.
— I think there could very well be another update before 22 March… Maybe St. Patrick’s Day or something along those lines. (Though yes, ABS/ABR Frees need updates as well.)
I just hope that there will be a paid version on the Android Market so I can get ad-free without having to go through Amazon.

AB Seasons just updated to have the AB space ad at the beginning. Now my AB seasons does not load at all on my droid – anybody else seen this glitch?
Try restarting your device. The in-app display should not affect the gameplay at all.
Once you view the ad click the back button(in lower left hand corner) to go to the main loading screen.
Although ABS won’t allow me to play a level. The game crashes.
I haven’t experienced any issues. Can someone provide more details?
Basically what I did was I watched the ad, exited out of it, went to YotD 1-5, game crashed.
Not happening now, must be something wrong with my device.
I was searching this thread for mention of this problem. Happened to me too. I went in and cleared the data from the app and now it works fine. Granted, I lost all my Seasons progress, but it gives me something to do for the next month (when I’m not in school and studying).
Oh, tried restarting, exiting, etc. Kept crashing. Nothing fixed it but clearing the data.
My Android was crashing at the end of the ad also.I put it in airplane mode and the ad no longer showed up, allowing me to play the game.
Thanks all for the responses. Left AB alone for the weekend and the glitch just went away, so apparently doing nothing is good IT work. Thanks again!
The teaser image just freaked me out.
Yeah, I get the feeling that the image and video are inspired by sci-fi suspense films like Alien and Predator.

On the 0g levels…
How are the pigs going to keep their buildings from drifting off? After impact, there are no forces that can stop drifting particles.

I think it will be low-g, not 0g. Anything with mass has gravitational pull.
0g would be fun though! Maybe a GE (or similar) level? :D
0g basically means all pigs should be killed by a bull-eye hit or an explosion (Black Bird or the White Bird Egg. I don’t really think it’ll be 0g, but since they said there will be a new game physics I think there will be a dramatic change in the gameplay. Maybe there will not be pig, perhaps they’ll go Rio style and change the pigs to Aliens or somesort of Space creatures.
TBH, many of the GE levels are single hit levels anyway, so it wouldn’t make much difference :)
In the space GE, birds fly farther and take longer to come down. I think that’s all it’s going to be.

Probably the same concept as Android has been: Free ad-supported through Market; Paid ad-free through Amazon.
Thanks. I would like to get an ad-supported version for free because a) it wouldn’t cost as much, b) I can just use airplane mode to not have ads, and c) once the bad piggy bank comes out I can purchase the remove ads button.
