This latest update for the PC version of Angry Birds Rio brings it current with iOS and Android, which is great news. A HUGE thanks to DLM for emailing us with this news and some additional tidbits which I’ll go into next.
How to update: If you already have Angry Birds Rio PC installed the next time you open it up you should be prompted to update. The update involves downloading and installing a new executable. Note, the update deletes the previous installer executable, so if you want to keep previous version make a backup of the executable file first (thanks DLM!). If you don’t yet have Angry Birds Rio for the PC you can download it here.
In addition to this update containing Carnival Upheaval and more hidden fruit in the form of papayas, it also includes a “Redeem Code” button on the opening screen. This where users who purhcase Rio on DVD or Blu-ray will enter their code to unlock the Golden Beachball episode (click for more info).

I know this just posted, but I opened Rio on my computer and there is no option to update. Any suggestions?
No problem. Do you have the full version or the demo? If you don’t get prompted in game then you could download the new installer from download.angrybirds.com. Your progress should remain intact, but if you want to be 100% sure backup your highscores.lua and settings.lua files first. On Windows 7 they’re located in:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Rovio\Angry Birds Rio
Then if you run into a problem just replace the new LUA files with the ones you just backed up. Honestly, backing up these files is a good idea anyhow, as you just never know when something might happen.

Neat! I was wondering how updates worked for the PC versions.
The updater.ini file has a check frequency setting. Your update may be dependent on this number … that is the game’s program does a check every so often … so your update may be ‘delayed’ based on this. For example, if you opened your game yesterday and a scan of Rovio’s website was done and a new update wasn’t available, it may be a few days before another scan is done and the update is picked up. I would not recommend changing the updater.ini file since I am not positive what the frequency number means. It could be hours, days, weeks, etc. Also, I did not install Rio or Classic via the Intel AppUp–I installed directly from Rovio’s site–so I can not comment on how the update works via AppUp.
Thanks for the info. We have an article for how to update AB through Intel AppUp. That said, I don’t believe Rio is even available through AppUp.

My update did not wipe out previous scores or fruits but as is suggested above, it is a very good idea to backup the files as suggested above.
if i download the new installer, will the old progress remain intact? yes, i read how to copy my saved files, but just to be sure ;)
Yes, it should, but I would always back up just to be safe.
you kniw, when I switched from AppUp to the newer Angry Birds, my old saves still worked!
Before I go and purchase Rio on DVD for the code, do you anticipate that it will be usable for AB Rio via the android market. And yes my niece is getting a gift just because I want the extra levels.

I think it will, but you can always wait until tomorrow to be sure.
I just got the RIO BD to find that the clue for the extra levels is in level 6-13. Any explanation why the extra levels don’t get activated when I shoot the birds where they told me to? Any explanation as to why I needed to buy the RIO BD when it turns out that iPhone and Android users don’t have to use a specific code to unlock the levels? I’m starting to feel like I’ve been cheated.
Very interesting, maybe it is timed to not work till on or after Aug 2nd, which is the official release date for the Rio BD? Ummm, just what were the directions for level 6-13? :-)

Yes, it’s an iPad. I changed the date to manual and changed the date to Aug 2. After hitting the spot at 6-13 the new level appeared :-)
So does this mean that you cant get the new dvd levels on the ipod or android??
I don’t know about the android version, but on the iPhone/iPad it works.
i just got the new hidden levels on my rooted Nook Color which runs on Android & on my iPhone 4 by changing the timezone & running the steps above.
It worked on android also just change time to 8/2 n aim for under the slingshot
Here are some step by step directions for people who can not get the dvd of want to get a head start. (iPhone) Go in settings and change your date/time. Once you have done that, go into Angry Birds Rio and go to level 6-13. Shoot the red bird under the slingshot. Once the bird roll out, a golden beach ball will pop out. The red bird will roll over to get it. When you go the the eposode section, there will be an new one called Golden Beachball.
I could not wait, and I tried the directions above mine. Now I have it! Oh, remember to turn back your time. You have to turn off your set automatically

Oh my god! I set the time to midnight and got the levels in

I purchased the full version of AB Rio about a month or so ago for my computer but I dont see an update when I open the game. I went to download.angrybirds.com but I dont see anything for updates. I dont want the demo version that’s why I bought the full version. This may be a dumb question bcz I bought the ad free Rio for my android phn and I havent had to buy the updates. Do I need to buy the full version again for the updates? I have my code from Rio (the movie) that I’m anxiously waiting to play.
You will be prompted in-game to update, but the updater is periodic. Check out this comment for some details therein.
I have the full version of Angry Birds Rio and it doesn’t say anything about being updated.
The updater file runs periodically, although we are unsure of how long the period actually is. Keep checking and it should appear soon.

I had downloaded and purchased Angry Bird and Angry Bird Rio for PC at the $4.99 each. With the update I see the Redeem Code come up. I tried to use the codes emailed to me , but it will not allow me to use it on either game, Do I have to pay for new codes again.
I don’t think so. I believe “Redeem Codes” is used for unlocking extras, like the Golden Beachball levels. You should click, “Activate” or something like that then enter your code in those fields. Forgive me if you already tried this, but I wanted to throw it out there just in case.
The codes that ate emailed to you are the activation keys to get the full version of the Angry Birds and Angry Birds Rio games that you paid for. The redeem code is forAB Rio which comes with the DVD if you purchased it. If you have an older version of Rio on your PC, you could wait for the update to download or you can download the demo again. I downloaded the demo bcz I didn’t want to wait for the update bcz I didn’t know how often my computer checks for updates. It shouldn’t erase any progress. You may be prompted to enter your activation key again that was emailed to you. Once the update is installed, “redeem code” should be at the bottom of Rio to click on to enter the code that u got from purchasing the movie. I can tell you that you can use both activation keys and the redeem code keys twice bcz I downloaded box games on my pc at work and at home and I only purchased both games once. I hope this helps.

Redeem code is to unlock the Golden Beachball levels. If you do not see “Activate full version” then it is already activated.

I was prompted to update both Angry Birds and Rio and now neither works. I have tried to reinstall demo and then i get the error “there was an error during Game Explorer Configuration Process”. Then all the progress is rolled back. Help
Yikes, that is a new one. Are you using Windows Vista by chance and is it “modified” in any way?
yes i have vista home and use Google chrome. both rio and ab were removed by the installer when it tried to update. i have tried numerous times to re install. have written to rovio. one response for more information …now well over a week and no response
Can you try setting the AB shortcut to “XP compatibility” mode then launching again?
I probably would have been able to do that if when I got the error message it didnt rollback the whole thing and now there is no shortcut, no program, no nothing ab anywhere. I tried to download the trial last night and the download cancelled its self shortly after starting. :-(
I just tried to down load again , made sure anti virus wasnt blocking, started download and just before it was finished I got the same error “There was an error during the game explorer configuration process” and then rolling back action. Poof gone!
I am running Win 7 Ultimate 32-bit, and I also had the update installer fail with the message “there was an error during Game Explorer Configuration Process”. I have had AB Rio installed and running on this machine for months without issue. In fact, I was playing it today when I was prompted to update. The update failed and removed the game completely. I get this error using installer package 1.1.1 and 1.2.2.
Some users have reported an odd fix for this. Try uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes. It seems to work out for a few people. Also, be sure your anti-virus is allowing the process to run, and that you are running as administrator.
i accidentally uninstall the newest version of angry birds rio with a reedem code at the main menu how can i back the uninstall program or how can i install a new one if it is not working anymore. thanks,
You can go to download.angrybirds.com and click “download the trial”, which will get you the proper .exe file. You may need to re-enter the “Activation Key” that you originally purchased.

You have to buy the activation key ($4.95 USD) from that same site.
The audio issue, I’m not sure. Perhaps you have the game muted. You can check when you pause any level, there’s a little speaker icon in the bottom left.

If you currently have the demo version from download.angrybirds.com, then you can return there to buy an activation code for the full version for $4.95 US.
Bought AB Rio updated to 1.2.2 (Mac) have the code from the movie but I do not get an option to redeem. What gives?
That is noted in the Mac update post. To be honest, we aren’t sure why it isn’t there.

If we happen to say “original app” on this site, we are referring to “Angry Birds”. We add “original” usually to be more specific and to separate it from Seasons and Rio.

Just go to download.angrybirds.com and download the new “trial”. If you have the activated version, it will stay activated.

If you originally bought your game there (the standalone version), then go to that site and click the blue box “Download the Trial”. It will download an exe file, install it, and your game will be updated.

You have to purchase a copy of the Rio DVD or Blu-ray to obtain a code. They are only good for a single use, so you won’t find any here.
Actually, I was able to use my redeem code twice. I bought the Rio PC version and used my activation code on my work and on my laptop at home. When the update was available, my computer installed the newest update and just like how you click for the activation code I did the same for the redeem code twice.
The activation code works up to three times (to activate the full version of the game). It is my understanding that the redeem code (to get the Golden Beachball levels) only works once.

I know for a fact that I was NOT able to, but who knows, maybe some people get lucky.
