Angry Birds Rio Now Available for NOOK Color

Barnes & Noble and Rovio have teamed up again to bring Angry Birds Rio to the NOOK Color. This comes on the heels of the announcement on June 30th, 2011 that the Mighty Eagle could be used on the NOOK Color for free while inside a Barnes & Noble store.

This launch version of Angry Birds Rio for NOOK Color includes 105 levels, which means it’s got the same number of levels as the current iOS and Android version (v1.2.1).

What is interesting though is the purchase page on the Barnes & Noble website says, “Completely new achievements!”. Does this mean the NOOK Color also has a new achievement system built in (ala, Game Center) or are they referring to the hidden fruit? If you have a NOOK Color with Angry Birds Rio installed please let us know!

I have a Nook Color w/both Angry Birds and Angry Birds Rio installed. With regards to the bit about completely new achievements, I think that represents a case of copy and paste error, as I have not noticed anything resembling new achievements either standalone or when connected to the B&N in-store wi-fi.

I haven’t seen or heard about any type game center app that runs in concurrence with Rio either.

It should be noted that the Nook is essentially a functionally limited and locked down Android tabet device. Rooting it won’t help because as far as B&N is concerned, all you’ve done is to void any warranty you may have

Thanks for much for the info TruckDriver. Bummer about their not being achievements. I was hoping that this might be the first Android device to receive achievements. Question for you, can you still download and install the full (paid) version of Angry Birds or Angry Birds Rio on a rooted NOOK Color?

BirdLeader – as far as I’ve been able to determine, the answer to your question is yes. The only downside to rooting is the loss of any warranty with B&N – regardless of whether the rooting is successful, or you brick it. I haven’t made the attempt as it does what I want it to – including playing Angry Birds!

Follow the instructions in the forum. Note, the rating on your avatar in Gravatar has to be set to G. This will make sense once you set it up. Also, I’ve noticed you dropping A LOT of comments. I don’t mind this if they’re meaningful, but please don’t comment just to comment. Thanks.

I also have a Nook and I can’t wait until they get seasons on it. I love being able to play on the big screen!

I play on the Xoom, so mine’s bigger!!! :-) :-)

Seriously though, I don’t see how you can play on a phone screen. I tried it with my DroidX, and found it way too small.

Ahhh, to have good visual acuity again…

One thing I wish would have been better with the Nook is a better external speaker. As it stands now, you need to have earbuds or headphones plugged in to hear the game sounds at a decent level.

I’d like to know why on NC you have to pay for angry birds when on my Ipad & phone they are free? wanted something lighter but may have to send back NC

The only “free” versions of the game for iPad and iPhone are specifically called “Angry Birds Free”, which contain about 15 levels each. The full apps for iPhone and iPad are not free.

By christi

then how many levels are in the full apps?

If you are completely up-to-date on iOS devices, then you could have this many levels:

Angry Birds: 273 + 24 Golden Egg levels
AB Seasons: 154 + 22 Golden Egg levels
AB Rio: 120 + 15 “Golden Beachball” levels

For a grand total of six hundred eight levels of play, with more yet to come. Rather impressive, when you think about it.

How do i update rio on my nc?

Is there an option similar to the AppStore or Android Market on NOOK?

Rank: Master Slinger with 7205 points
By TruckDriver (@truckdriver)

Yes, there is. Downloading apps from the BN store is remarkably similar to the process for buying ebooks. All you need is a wi-fi connection, then you launch the store app.

Unlike an ebook, however, the AB apps must go through the standard Android installation process.

I haven’t done this on my NOOK for a while, as I have Rio v. 1.2.1 installed. I take it that maybe they’ve updated to 1.2.2 w/the Golden Beachball levels?

I believe NOOK has v1.2.2, but an old Rovio tweet says that the Beachball levels are not yet available for NOOK. Not sure if this will change in the future, but that’s the case for now.

thanks for info I appreciaate it!

AMslimfordy – I read that tweet, and the omission of the Golden Beachball levels strikes me as odd, given that the Nook is Android based. Makes me wonder why they aren’t accessible.

True, but we must keep NOOK and Android separate since there are a few discrepancies. For example, NOOK can use (although not purchase) the Mighty Eagle in B&N. I do think that NOOK (and Symbian?) will have the levels at some point, but I have nothing to justify this other than Sync System.

I suspect you may be right, especially w/regards to the Sync System, as getting down to one codebase for each game makes good logistical sense on Rovio’s part.

I just bought Angry Birds Seasons *Moon Festival* for Nook Color. However, it won’t download. I’ve turned it off and back on, tried the updates, I got nuttin. What’s up?

Per Rovio’s FAQ:

Q: Why can’t I install Angry Birds?

A: Please try removing the SD card and then installing the game. Afterwards you can reinsert the SD card.

Will there ever be any more updates for the Nooks? If they share an operating system with Android, shouldn’t the new Angry Birds updates be available?

Sorry Suellen, but this question would be better directed toward Rovio. But it would be a bit generous to call Kindle or NOOK an “Android” device. The operating system doesn’t use Google Play or most other functionalities of Droid OS.
